We have had same issues as some with the 890RV, just the other week on our way to Kenisee Lake RV park in Jefferson Ohio it tried to have us make a left on mill creek road off of rte 45. The campground is on this road but there is 10foot low bridge. We noticed this just as we turned on the road. As we were looking at the map to reroute ourselves a man came out of his house and said it happens all the time. He gave us directions and we had to back out onto the main road and go around. It gave us no warning or anything, would have let us go right under. (we have our height set to 13' 6" and it was on our 5th wheel mode, we double checked). We have also had it try to reroute us in virginia to go around a tunnel because of propane when we were allowed as long as it was off. And it finally stopped "double talking". Since day one maybe a couple times a week she would start talking after we hit start and then start talking over herself. It was like 2 Lola's talking at once. (our nickname for her, although maybe now LuLu lol) Maybe the last update fixed it. I was going to call but just always forgot. Otherwise we are happy with it. We expect a few things on occasion to not be perfect but for the price really should be pretty darn close to perfect. RV Trip wizard is still the best routing way to go. Never fails us so far.
I have recently bought a Garmin RV Cam 795. I set the unit to not take me on a route that would put me on a Ferry boat. Guess what? On a trip to Mayport Naval station in Jacksonville, it led me directly to the ferry. Needless to say, it was not a good night. It then routed me through very tight streets and brought me right back to the ferry landing. After this I had to use goggle maps on my cell phone to finally get to the main gate. After this, I don't have much confidence about the bridge weights and Tunnel information. Not sure what to do other than continue to study the workings of the GPS and be very careful about believing it will keep me safe. Another thing was on the interstate it kept telling me that I was over the speed limit. The GPS was saying the speed limit was 40 MPH . the interstate speed was a minimum of 45MPH and Maximum of 70MPH. I was traveling at around 62MPH.
I just drove from British Columbia to Quebec and back with my 5th wheel using my RV1090 and it sure made my driving experience much better. That said, once I was directed to a specific gas station but the overhang was way too low for the height of my rig, which I had entered into the Nav...so not 100% fool proof...
The height of your RV only applies to routing for roads and not your stops. The Garmin does not account for overhang heights at private businesses; you would need to decide which is best for you. For us, we always select truck stops since we know we are able to fit in there. In order to ensure you choose the correct gas station for your particular RV, you can sort them by filters as well. Hope this helps!
@@Technorv Thanks Eric for the feedback. I've always gone from British Columbia to Quebec through the US in the past as your road systems, rest areas, truck stops and many other amenities are 100% better than what we have in Canada. With the border closed, this was my 1st trip using the Trans Canada Hwy and I learned that if there's a next time, I will better prepare my trip & stops. You guys have a great day and keep up the good work!!!
Hey Eric!! I add 6 inches to the overall height of our rig in the 890 profile as I know I'll be the first guy under the bridge after repaving...and they won't mill the road surface in advance! One other item; regarding software and map updates (I left a note on your site) via Garmin Express...it is NOT compatible with Chromebooks, only Windows and Mac platforms. So while you can use the Chromebook USB to power the 890 (it must be hooked to power for updates) you must update wirelessly. It's best to update at home prior to travel as well for multiple reasons. Hope to see y'all at the Tampa RV show in January! May need another TST TPMS.
From my most recent experience, Garmin doesn't allow much "Wiggle Room" when considering bridge height vs. trailer height. It routed my under a bridge that was literally ~3" clearance. Very scary....for cushion, I changed my height in the Garmin settings!
Tried the 10 inch Garmin RV...way too big for my Ram pickup truck (tow a 41ft 5th Wheel). I have the backup cameras and TMPS screens as well (in addition to the standard 10 inch Ram screen), so add in a 10 inch navi and it's just too much. Trying to sucktion cup that to the windshield, forget it...not designed for that! It creates blind spots. I returned it (to Amazon) and ordered the 8 inch (from Techno RV) and it is perfect! Now, I did create a custom mount "shelf" for my Ram truck (remove the "sunglasses cutout above the Ram entertainment system, bam...great place to screw a custom mounting shelf to) which helps, but I could not have done it, and have it turn out as nice, with the 10 inch version. Very happy with the 8 inch version. Now, I'm a LONG time Garmin customer. I've been using Garmin navi's since the old days of the Garmin 2610 (if memory serves me) and had mounted it on my 2003 Harley touring bike before navi on a touring bike was a thing. I've had probably 15 Garmins, traveled thousands of miles (both US and Europe) using Garmin to keep on track, and I keep coming back. I can't say they're "perfect" and without issues (they have quirks and my other Garmin 890 [I think] that I use for my Harley is a bit quirky and I'm not 100% happy with it, but it's the best thing out there for my Harley so it is what it is), but they have the best interface on the market, and the old Map Source software was awesome for planning, sharing, and uploading custom routes (I have so many custom routes, map databases, waypoint databases, etc from that software I just can't delete!). I'm not as happy with the Basecamp, but I'm adapting. I haven't used Basecamp with the new 8 inch RV model, so looking forward to trying it. All I can say is I would never use any other navi than Garmin. I've tried Tom Tom and hated it, I tried the apps on the smart phone (early days of smart phones all the way to today) and they just don't cut it. I've seen other brands out there, but I do have a level of trust in Garmin, so I'll stay on board this train. Thanks to TechnoRV for delivering my latest one so quickly (Randy from Parker) and I encourage Garmin to keep on developing and improving their already great products. Hey, how about adding a database for Pilot/FlyingJ/TA truck stops to help us long rigs to NOT HAVE TO WORRY about finding a perfect fuel stop (and be able to use our TDS fuel card!) :-)
Great video! I bought my Garmin RV 1090 (from TechnoRV) and MOSTLY like it. There is no way to mount to anything except a windshield. In my Class A, that means mounting it pretty far away and I can't reach the unit while driving, not even close. That's short-sided of Garmin not to offer a mount that'd work on a dash or other surfaces. It means I can't use 90% of its features while on the road. Much more importantly, it sometimes takes me on roads that big vehicles are prohibited from. Recent example: it routed my on the Garden State Parkway in northern New Jersey which has a 7,000 pound limit. There needs to be some additional quality control, Garmin!!
Hey Matthew, you may want to look at a weighted dash pad. The pad sits on your dash and the Garmin suction mounts to the dash pad. You can do a search on the internet for "Weight GPS Dash PAd" and this will show you many options. We have passed this information on to Garmin, thank you.
I have had the same issues with the Garmin driving us down roads not made for trailers at all. We almost crashed because it took us on a tight windy road that was clearly marked not acceptable for trailers but we had no way to turn around.
I had recently called Garmin Tech Support as my Garmin RV 770 increasing is using an incorrect algorithm for directions. My map is up to date as well. I had such good luck with my previous Garmin NUVI, which gave very good directions, but this unit does not. Just recently the Garmin 770 had me exit an interstate and took me through a residential neighborhood to to get to my destination I could have reached by taking the next Interstate exit down the road. When traveling in TN, the Garmin RV 770 had me take a 1 lane road vs. the TN State Highway to get to my destination. All of the RV features don't help when your Garmin RV 770 recommends misdirections.
Hi Mark, we have worked with Garmin in the past of situations such as this. Sometimes a new update will feature a detour that is no longer in use. If we know exactly what the route you were taking was, Garmin is pretty good about fixing it in their next update. Happy to help if you want to reach out to us at info@technorv.com
Hey Eric, it's your old pal Frank! I have the truck ordered and will be getting a 5th wheel soon after I receive it. I am perusing your channel and trying to learn as much as I can. I hope to talk to you soon or better yet, run into you somewhere out on the road. Take care!!!
I have a Garmin RV 890 and I love it and highly recommend getting one if you have an RV of any size. My only complaint is for me to go just about anywhere I have to pass under an arched bridge. In the breakdown lane the bridge is 13' 2" (my RV is 13' 3"), the main driving lane and the left lane are both over 14'. However, the Garmin will not route me and says I can't go under the bridge and there are no alternative routes. I was wondering if there is a way to tell the unit not to worry about that bridge?
Hi, there is not a way to take a bridge out of the routing. That is a interesting situation you had there. I will pass that along to Garmin, thank you. Eric
Sadly, from time to time the Garmin database does not have an entry for a bridge and will insist on rerouting you perhaps 50+ miles around a legitimate safe route. Or worse, once Garmin took me down a dead-end road with no place to turn around without going on private property and getting chewed out by the owner. At that point it's tempting to reenter your RV dimensions to that of a passenger car in Garmin or ignore it and resort to a "Plan B, C..." (Rand McNally 2022 Motor Carriers' Road Atlas, Google, Siri...)
We bought a Garmin 1095 RV (10 inch screen) from Techno RV at the FMCA Tucson Rally in March 2024. We have a Winnebago View which is on a Mercedes Sprinter Chassis. They should have warned us that the 10 inch screen is too large for our windshield. We returned to TechnoRV's booth and asked how to mount the large screen. No one wanted to talk to us and told us we needed to call Garmin or the TechnoRV office. Beware that once Techno has your money they aren't interested in your problems with their products.
Im sorry that we were misrepresented at the Rally. If you ever have an issue please reach out to us at info@technorv.com and we will happily troubleshoot or answer any questions you have.
Thank you, great info. I have a question or 2, maybe you can help me. We live in New York and we're heading out West for 2 and a 1/2 months in May for our biggest trip yet. We are only RVing for one year.. We have a class C and flat tow our Jeep. We have been using Google maps and RV Life and it works good for us so far. There has only been one time where we lost our signal and got a little jammed up but nothing too serious. Going out West is another story. So we're thinking we mabey should get a Garmin. I just looked on my dashboard and windshield and there really is no room for that huge 8" screen. Even 6" would be to big. Do you think I should just get one that's made for a car? Or do you know if there are any other options? Or is there a small one that I could put in the height of my RV? I like the idea of putting in the height so it don't direct me to any low bridges. I think one that's much smaller would maybe fit ok. I don't need a big screen but I like the idea of having a satellite map instead of something that could lose the signal. I'm just looking for some advice, any help would be appreciated. Also does the Garmin have an attachment where you could hook it up to something other than the window? I'm also gonna try to call the Garmin company hoping to get someone on the phone for ideas. Thanks
If you are wanting a smaller screen than 7-inches, I would look at what they have for truckers instead of car versions since it has similar features as the RV version as it relates to height, etc. A car GPS will not have the same features or points of interest that you will want.
Can you program your ground clearance? I have a LQ horse trailer that rides very low to the ground. I’ve already had to repair my jack stabilizer due to a poorly built railroad crossing and I don’t want to do that again. Follow up question, does the unit tell you when you are approaching an agriculture check station (similar to a weigh station)?
There is no place to enter ground clearance in the Garmin unfortunately. You could say avoid dirt roads, but that is about it. I am not sure about the agriculture station. I have never seen that, but that is not to say it is not buried in the Garmin somewhere. I would think that would be a feature on the trucker version, but I would have to follow up with Garmin about this.
I would love to but a Garmin 795 Camper for use in England and Europe but all the you tube videos refer to the US. I wonder how well it’s geared for my locale?
Hey there! If sold in the US, your Garmin will come preloaded with North America maps, including US, Mexico and Canada. You can go here to purchase other maps if you want to use your Garmin abroad: www.garmin.com/en-US/c/road-maps/
This unit is 99% you still need to know where your going and restrictions. I’m 65’ with tow and 13’ tall. Wanted me to drive on a restricted parkway 40’ max and get me off an exit with a 10’ bridge. Didn’t go that way. Sent an email never got a response to this issue. Did get a response on another issue a year earlier.
Thanks for the feedback Jim. Garmin is constantly updating maps to ensure proper routing. I have not experienced that issue before, and I am sorry you had that incident. Eric
The best way to do this is get a weighted dash pad and then you use the suction mount on the GPS to suction to the dash pad. You can do a search for weighted GPS dash pads and find many options. I hope this helps. Eric
Is there a directory that tells what the different symbols on the screen are. In June we where on US 101 on Oregon coast, twice it tried to reroute us. I ignored it because I knew the road was good.
Ha! I was just on that road last week! Can't help you, I'm back in Colorado now...but saw you were out where I was and couldn't help myself! I look forward to seeing if you get a good answer. This is concerning.
There is not a complete directory, although the online manual on your GPS has quite a few of them in it. If there is a symbol not in the manual. we (or Garmin if you did not purchase from TechnoRV0 would be happy to help you with it. Just give us a call!
I brought the Garmin 890 GPS and have had nothing but issues with the product, the ability to access my computer via the Gps and computer was a disaster and would not work via many computers we have tried to get it to work. I requested Garmin support and got very little help with the issues we faced, so I ended up returning it back to Amazon and a refund?
I am sorry to hear that! Garmin support has been very helpful for our customers and I hate to hear you didn't have a good experience. We don't usually have situations where customers connect the 890 directly to a computer, so I can't speak to that. We usually do all updates, etc. directly on the 890. Wish I could be more helpful.
Hey folks, enjoined the video. We purchased the 890 RV unit last year and I 'wish' it had the capability of importing routes from Google or other apps. Any plans in the future to do that?
Did the bug with English language voices in the RV890 come up in your meeting? None of the alternate English language voices work - only the boring default female voice.
But, I don't want to put it on the dash. And, being chronogically challenged, I want a large screen, 12 " minimum. Where are they. Why not remote antenna?
Hi Alowat! Unfortunately we only offer the Garmins in 10 inch models. Signup for our newsletters and if Garmin creates one we will send out a launch invite.
In north Texas my Garmin routed me to 4 or 5 county roads that were very difficult because of 90 degree turns on a 12 foot wide road the another road ran to the same town that was a good road. What can I do to stop that from happening. That could have been a very costly mistake. I did set it up to the dimensions of my rig which is a 5th wheel pulled by a dual rear wheel f 350 truck. After this I have lost confidence in my Garmin
Hi Earl. There are settings in the Garmin that allow you to have more control over your routing in addition to the size. This video we made goes over how to access them and what they mean. Maybe this will help! ua-cam.com/video/l_lmoBZLCTY/v-deo.html
I had a class A and now I have a fifth wheel but I cant delete the class A from the GPS. Was told I have to do a master reset and would lose all my saved items.
A couple of years ago, we purchased the 780. We live in the northeast where there are many highways RVs are not allowed. Unfortunately the 780 directed us to those routes which renders this a useless unit. We returned it. We contact Garmin and we were told the database from Trimble is defective and they had no time table to resolve. Has the database been corrected? We would like to buy a stand alone unit and get away from the phone based GPS apps.
Hi, We have not heard of this. We have had our unit in 49 states and have not had any of these issues, but of course, there are a lot of roads we have not been on. I know Garmin does road updates a lot, but I do not have info on specific areas. Eric
Have the RV890 and having a hard time with lack of map detail traveling through Utah and Wyoming on I80. Shows nothing but the highway. Even once I get to a town/city and am navigating to the park it only shows the checkered flag (park) as a point off the highway. No roads or directions to the park. Just blue dots in a straight line from the highway to the flag. If I didn't have Google Maps as backup I'd be SOL once I left the highway. Have updated all maps and software.???
Hey Robert, it does sound like you may need to update your Garmin. The Garmin should tell you if there is an update. Check on that, and if there is no update then I would call Garmin and run this one by them, they are typically very helpful, and thankful for the information.
Check out the Garmin Basecamp software. Not the greatest, but it does the job. I haven't used it for the new RV units, but used it a lot for my Harley Garmin 890 and it was ok. I created custom routes for our riding club and shared them, seemed to work ok. Their old software, MapSource, was better, but gotta get on the Basecamp wagon.
Im sorry to hear you are experiencing issues. If you believe there is an issue with a route, Please let Garmin know. They do tons of updates every year and if it isnt in the latest update they will be happy to look into it and fix it.
I purchased the 890 Garmin, I never could get it to work - what that means is I loaded the destination and stops along the way, but the unit would not stay on. I had it plugged in for power and it continued to shut off. Each time it shut off it cleared the map and had to be restarted, due to this I sent it back and will use my old Garmin unit that has been fine for years. I can't recommend this unit.
Hey Mike, sorry about the issues you had there. I wonder if you may have had a defective power cable? The unit should not shut off if plugged into power and that is not something we hear of. Thanks for the feedback. Eric
Why does the 890RV gps show speed limit incorrectly? While traveling on Interstate 101 in CA my GPS showed the speed limit as 55 mph., it should have been 65 mph. What gives? Do I need to report this to Garmin?
Could be your rig choice in your RV 890. CA speed limit while towing is 55. Once your trailer is unhitched and you change your vehicle choice in Garmin to vehicle only you’ll see the 65 speed limit.
@@rogerstruthers3799 Then I suggest contacting Garmin. If you're still in CA you could test it by setting up a second vehicle as a passenger car and then toggle between the motorhome and car as you're driving on an Interstate.
So far, my experience with the unit has been far less than satisfactory. When I downloaded the app to my phone it wants me to click that I have read the license agreement that NO ONE READS. Because the place I need to click on is on the far right and 1/2 way off the screen it won't allow me to click it. This renders the app useless and thereby the features that I paid for on the RV 890 also useless. Also, the only way to power the unit is through their connection, which is not a common connection like a usb or hdmi. In addition they want you to use a cigarette lighter. Yep you can cut the cord and splice the wire, if you're very careful. I just feel this product and the interfaces are poorly thought out. Does it navigate, sure, but so does my phone and my phone does a lot more.

I have a 760 as well; it came with the truck I bought. So far, it is fine. Is there a reasonable point to upgrade to the 890?
Are there any apps on the 1095 that helps with boon docking
Saw your business on KYD good review.
Thank you so glad I found you and so glad you do this for people like me!!... Not tech saavy lol
A GPS for semis might help. Semis with lo-boy trailer need to avoid things like steep railroad grades. Just a thought.
Eric
My windshield is too far. The best place for me is the flat surface above the doghouse. Does this thing have a kick stand or where can I get one?
The best way to do this is get a weighted dash pad and then you use the suction mount on the GPS to suction to the dash pad. You can do a search for weighted GPS dash pads and find many options. I hope this helps. Eric
@@Technorv thanks
Another awesome video. Very informative
Glad you liked it!
I bought the 780 GPS Garmin do you have a video on a step-by-step how to set it up?
We do have a Learning Series for our customers. I would be happy to share it here: ua-cam.com/play/PLBn0T22m2v5345Xm8uS4KkPZfyW4VOaFS.html
Can the RV1090 & the Overlander be synced? Or can the Overlander maps and specs be added to an RV1090?
Hi,
I don't believe Garmin will be using Google maps at any point. Interesting thought though. Thanks.. Eric
Did the bug with English language voices in the RV890 come up in your meeting? None of the alternate English language voices work - only the boring default female voice.
Hi Steve. We did not talk about that since that is not something we hear from our customers, so I am not sure about whether it has changed.
Hey with the Garmin 890 way I only want to drive 350 miles in a day will it break up my trip that way
Hey Steve, yes, you can set up a multi-stop trip and just put each leg of the trip at 350 miles, no problem.
Eric
See if this video helps. I show you how to add vehicles around the 3:30 minute mark. ua-cam.com/video/fpCAhkbDliw/v-deo.html
Eric
@@Technorv I have since confirmed with Garmin and on a 1090 that the database has been corrected!
Do Garmin units have the ability to plan routes ahead of time with stops then let you save them? Rob
Yes, you can make a multi-stop trip and save the entire trip.
Not happy with my 795. Misses critical info, false alarm on a 101 minute delay (non-existent and Google map and wayze did not see).
Eric
I want a second RV 1090 magnetic mount so I can use it in my toad, do you sell these?
We do not, but you can get one from Garmin here: buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12982-00#overview
Great sales but lacking in specifics…!
Hey Robert, let us know if you have specific questions that we can answer for you.
Eric
Alot of trouble with our 890. Mistake spending the money.
Sorry to hear about that. What type issues did you have?
Why does the 890RV gps show speed limit incorrectly? While traveling on Interstate 101 in CA my GPS showed the speed limit as 55 mph., it should have been 65 mph. What gives? Do I need to report this to Garmin?
Could be your rig choice in your RV 890. CA speed limit while towing is 55. Once your trailer is unhitched and you change your vehicle choice in Garmin to vehicle only you’ll see the 65 speed limit.
@@chuckgunning1872 I have it set for 33 ft Motorhome not towing.
