I always try to plan a trip using a paper map or atlas first. The biggest reason is LARGE Cities. I hate going through them and will go out of my way to avoid them where possible. What I do is, after picking the route on the map, enter the destination on the GPS. When the Map route and GPS route don't agree I put in 'way-points' along the route till the GPS route lines up with the Map route. And thanks for the recommendation of the Motor Carriers' Road Atlas... might be just what I need.
I have net10 pay as you go phone 30$ every 2 months 300 minutes ,so I bout a 7inch GPS for 50$ and it works great, my RV is a few inches under 11 foot high
I’ve used it a few time and also didn’t like that it forces you to use your location as your starting point. But I noticed today you can delete your location as the starting point once you have two other points on the map. Makes it easier to plan future routes.
FYI, just installed and Uninstaller the app. It won't cease displaying a pop up asking to enable Google location services. GPS appears to work just fine, in the moments I can sneak a peak at it. But for those of us who don't want wifi sniffing and Bluetooth scanning enabled, this is a deal killer. Thanks for the review anyhow, looked promising.
thank you so much, on a fixed budget i was afraid I'd never get a good GPS for my Rv. this is Wonderful. I downloaded to both my phone and tablet. and activated it. Free shared this to facebook.
I like to use truck map in conjunction with Google maps or a GPS to plot my route in advance, because sometimes truckmap can take a longer route than necessary . I like the fact that truckmap will follow routes that have the most truck stop access, avoid low bridges, and tight corners. It's a good tool to have in my arsenal of travel apps.
May be especially useful with our horse trailer camper which sits low to the ground and is 39 feet long behind our F350 Supercab. People frequently rip their plumbing out in some not so friendly campgrounds
Hey, I've been playing with app and am really confused because when I put in a route, say, from my home to a campground 3 hours away, it takes me over a very mountainous road (I live here and already know NOT to go that way) but if I didn't live here, I would get hung up on this road. Shouldn't this Trucker App know NOT to take a rig that direction? There are much straighter roads it could have picked. This bothers me because once we are in areas we know nothing about, we would follow what it tells us and that is scary! I see you touched on this a bit at the end. We enjoy your videos, thank you!
As you say with a large tow don't use Highway 89A to go over Mingus Mountain. By the way the view of Mingus mountain from Chino Valley was very beautiful with last nights snow. To Many clouds to see Bill Williams mt or the San Francisco Peaks. But they would also be covered in snow.
Man, is there anything you don’t know about rv’s. Thanks for sharing the wealth of knowledge you’ve amassed. Learned so much from you already. Thanks again.
Great reminder to plan your route and not just use a GPS. Sometimes you can find beautiful drives suitable for a RV but may not be the fastest but sometimes the scenic route isn't suitable for RVs but worth the day trip.
I love our haloview system. Looking forward to adding sideview cameras this summer. We take the monitor into the trailer when we are parked and use it for a security camera.
I agree on the Road Atlas issue. I have used GPS's almost since they first came, but still they are not totally reliable. They dont give the oversight and they often takes You out on a detour depending on how your settings are. Always good to have an oversight on paper both when planning and when You are lost.
I am a local RV user. Most of my trips with our RV are within 3-4 hours from home. I know most of the routes by heart don't really need a GPS. However, I do make regular long road trips, sometimes over 1,000 km (600 miles) in a single day. I have yet to find an App that I like. I prefer a actual GPS. The primary reason is where my phone sits on my dash. My GPS site high and I can glance at it without taking my eyes off the road. Secondly, my long trips are often into the US (I'm Canadian) and therefore I don't have cell service (wifi only) once I cross the border. I also like the way I can create WAY POINTS and select my route. I am using a Garmin and when I get to my exit, it will show the signs, lanes and an actual picture of the Interstate exit. I am looking for a GPS that give me greater control of the date that is displayed. I'm a number person, so I am looking for more info.
This is a nice app, however it is only good until you lose cell signal and it can't keep up lol. I do appreciate it, but I think I'll stick with my gps lol. Thanks again for the advice, inspiration, and videos. Love watching them. God Bless you and your family
Thank you, dedicated units are good for that. When I was testing if I put it in Airplane mode after the route is setup and navigating the GPS continues to function. It just wouldn't be able to recalculate or find new points. So most the time I don't notice when we loose service while driving.
Thanks! I also like the free app "Highway Weather" which allows you to check the current and future weather along your route including wind speed...i.e. I'm going to be on that road in 2 days, what are the projected wind speeds? As always, great info. Can I adopt you? lol
Hi Jerod. I just finished watching your video regarding the Free Truck Gps app. I went to the play store and checked out the reviews. Sorry to say there are many negative reviews claiming the App is crashing and sending out erroneous information. As far as I can tell the developer has not responded. So I will wait till I hear better news. Love your videos man, keep them coming.
Quick question are you on Android or iPhone? I have seen negative reviews but haven't had those problems on apple I was just curious as others ask questions I can get a grasp of what it is like for Android users.
Hi, just went to download the app and when I did read about ten reviews. Most were pretty negative. Common thread was that it worked really well until a recent update. Now crashes a lot, not very accurate and a couple other things. Don't know how much you have used it yet but have you noticed/had these issues. Will wait for more input from you or more extensive reading/analysis of reviews. We are weekend warriors with a 22' hybrid that only really need maybe once a year so can afford to wait. Love your videos! We have very different rigs but am pretty good at deciding what applies to me and what is solely for entertainment. Thanks again.
I haven't had any of those issues but I wonder if it depends on the age of your specific phone. I also hear Android has more problems than IOS. For me on the Iphone X I haven't had any of those issues.
With regard to knowing when you're going to lose your lane, on most highways, the lane stripes will change from long stripes to short stripes when the lane is going to end. My wife was driving and I mentioned that she needed to get over because she was going to lose her lane. Sure enough, the lane ended and she thought I was a genius. Then I let her in on the secret.
Jared as for volume control on your ram when you are set through the stereo BT when your phone is talking adjust the truck volume and it controls the BT volume on the stereo. At least it does on mine.
Yes ours works the same but when we use the phone for music and navigation it’s the difference between music volume and navigation volume. The music will decrease when it cuts to navigation but the truck map is quite in relation to music volume setting. Google maps has a way to increase output of volume in app so it is balanced with music level. I hope that makes sense
Boy am I behind the times. The wife and I traveled a ton in an Avalanche with a car hauler with the hotrod and did it for years with just the atlas and never got lost...not once. BUT, we did hit weather unexpectedly and traffic backups out of the blue....close calls at times as well. So we thought we were hot snot when we got a cell phone and could Google map thing and even hotter when we found the weather channel app. So now we really like waze as it does like you mentioned, the lane one should be in. That saves a lot as now we are anywhere from 59 to 68 feet long. Hitting Nashville and trying to stay with 24 to i65 gave very short time to go 6 lanes across for a left split exit coming in from the right. Anyway, we are taking this video to heart as having the weather at a glance on the gps map is sweet. I have to plan the route and est when we will be where and switch apps to see what each hourly forecast calls for AND hope we stay on the estimate. I didn't hear anything about pop up ads or data gathering from the app....any news on that end? Thanks for the video ...even if I am behind the times. LOL
A good GPS like a Garmin RV or Trucker GPS device will give the same thing. One major flaw with the app on your phone is if there is no cell service you would not have a GPS any longer. The standalone GPS uses Satellites not cell towers. They can also provide the weather, and traffic and can suggest a faster route when in traffic. Yes it is convenient to have one device but it is not a cure all
I agree it's not perfect but it actually continues to navigate when we drop service for a while after the route is set up and navigating, the GPS continues to function. It just wouldn't be able to recalculate or find new points without service. So most of the time I don't notice when we lose service while driving. The positioning on the phone is from the same satellites the stand-alone GPS uses for positioning and the app appears to cache a fair bit of the route map so it continues as normal for us when cell service drops out.
Thanks for the review. we have a new gps but I'll probably get this app. We'll check the directions on both. If they match, we'll use the gps to save data. If not, we'll program accordingly.

Great video. I will give app a try. Do you need cell service all the time with this app? It is one of the reasons I preferred a Garmin versus phone app. Thank you for looking out for all of us. I found you can remove you starting location for mapping purposes. Slide left on the location to remove. However, it won't let you start from that location but I was I was able to see miles and travel time.
Thanks for that tip! I have turned it to airplane mode while driving and it still functions and navigates it just can't recalculate or search for points with no service. So once it is going and if you loose service in a section it will keep navigating and keep you updated on your progress on the map.
The routing on that app is really freaking weird though. As an example, going from Austin TX to Nashville, TN. It routes you from Little Rock, north to Hoxie via 67 to 555 to 55 to Memphis. Instead it should be routing you on to i-40 in Little Rock and then on to Memphis. My settings are at 10ton, 13'6" and I know for a fact along that route there are no low bridges or load restrictions.
@@AllAboutRVs Thanks. I really love your straightforward videos and I look forward to you recommending a replacement for my outdated 7" RV GPS that takes up so much room. I would love something that was good for towing my 38', 8 tonne fifth wheel but also was supported by Android Auto so it could all be on one device and screen.
Do we put in the length of the trailer or the total length both of the travel trailer and the tow vehicle? Does this app show all the various campgrounds? I just installed this app and it's not so easy to change a route to the roads i prefer. It also didn't send me on the Garden State Parkway after going west from getting off the Tapan Zee ( now Mario Cuomo bridge) I'm pretty sure there's no problems for a travel trailer going on the Garden State Parkway all the way down to I95 southbound. I like the Copilot app. It seems much more RV user friendly. They charge 35$ a year but it's worthwhile, unless you know a free app similar or at least better than the TruckMap app you like so much. Thanks 👍✔️ Happy and safe RVing 🙏
Thanks for the good info! Is it possible to report errors in the app? I know that Apple Maps and Waze allow you to edit incorrect places (like when something is marked on the wrong side of the road)
Jared great video. I downloaded the app while watching. Looking forward to using it this season. In your video you mentioned that you aslo monitor your tires on the phone. What TPMS are you using?
Does this use GPS or cellular based location? It sounds like it’s cellular. I can’t rely on that in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A true GPS is needed with no cellular service.
We haven't seen it use much data. It needs service to plan the route and search points of interest but not much once it is navigating. while testing it out to keep navigating once it is going to put it in airplane mode and it continues to navigate and track where you are going.
Not sure why the phone number. I originally downloaded the app a couple years ago and didn't remember having to give my phone number but I'm sure I had to.
We have a video about the truck ua-cam.com/video/8LZOqgZr6QQ/v-deo.html and our last tour of the RV was here ua-cam.com/video/gTe3iPv8v9c/v-deo.html but is a bit outdated for the changes.
i love this app - been using it for a year now. curious, what TPMS work in your phone? it would be cool if one of these apps would be apple car play compatible.
Does it run on a tablet? I'm thinking I'd like to mount a tablet to my dash and be able to split screen an app like that and another app like TPMS or Gasbuddy or whatever.
So I just downloaded this on Android, I'm not getting live weather updates? I swipe up and it shows weather for 2 city's along the route but nowhere to be worried about.

I love this one! what is the app again? Thank you very much..
It’s called Truck Map
What Tire pressure monitoring system do you use? I just received reply from you, but you gave me the link to GPS. Thanks for your reply.
What kind of vehicle did you put in settings?
Thanks for the great information.
I did dry van, that’s your typical semi
Thanks.
I've been using Google Maps in landscape mode as a taxi driver for the last 10 years. I find portrait mode too narrow to be of any use.
Hi Jared, just wondering if you still use this app, would you still recommend it, or is there something else better you would recommend. Thanks
Awesome job thanks for your information always a great video. One question what type of truck did you use in settings?
I used Dry Van.
Love this. Just downloaded. Seems like it will be a great app. Thank you!!!
Thanks
If you are driving a class a motorhome with no toad, do you just list the MH length
.
Thanks for the good info! Is it possible to report errors in the app? I know that Apple Maps and Waze allow you to edit incorrect places (like when something is marked on the wrong side of the road)
I didn't see that in there but I might have missed it.
Jared great video. I downloaded the app while watching. Looking forward to using it this season. In your video you mentioned that you aslo monitor your tires on the phone. What TPMS are you using?
We use TireMinder
@@AllAboutRVs Does tireminder have a smartphone app or did you purchase the entire system?
Extremely helpful information. Great job 👏!
I just used it to get to tx from Louisiana with it and its junk. Keep freezing up on me or it was supper slow. I had no luck with it.
Sounds promising. Unfortunately they don't seem to include Canada!
Let me know if you come across a good cost effective solution for Canada. I would love to share it and hope to go into Canada this year with the RV
What type of truck do you select since none of them seem to resemble an RV? Thanks in advance for any input!
I set it to dry van. Thats your typical Semi.
Very informative video.
Question does the trucker's app use cell service or satellite service
Cell to search for points of interest and Satellite for location navigation
I like the phone mount.
It is very convenient. Cell Phone Mount amzn.to/2WoBcXx
Thanks for the GPS info. Going to try it.
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the valuable info!
Thanks
what would be the best settings for something like a motorcoach or a skoolie? I don't have a trailer, it's just a bus. 32' currently
Nice, I like that one and I might have to download that one.
Does this use GPS or cellular based location? It sounds like it’s cellular. I can’t rely on that in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A true GPS is needed with no cellular service.
Good info.
I have friends that are truckers and use this app. They love it. But, wouldn’t his eat up your data plan?
We haven't seen it use much data. It needs service to plan the route and search points of interest but not much once it is navigating. while testing it out to keep navigating once it is going to put it in airplane mode and it continues to navigate and track where you are going.
Thanks Jared
GOing to give this a try. Been looking for something like this for a while.
i guess it's pretty randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@@armandoanakin9921 tons of them but you have to pay. $
@Armando Anakin Try FlixZone. Just google for it =)
@Tucker Kai definitely, I have been using Flixzone for since april myself :)
@Tucker Kai thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it!!
What is the name of the product that holds your cell phone to the Dash?
Cell Phone Mount amzn.to/2WoBcXx
hey - i just loaded that AP . sounds great but why is my phone number required ? deleted that AP !
Not sure why the phone number. I originally downloaded the app a couple years ago and didn't remember having to give my phone number but I'm sure I had to.
jeepin johnn
Can you avoid interstates? Like tollroads?
What brand of tire monitor are you using? Have you done a video on your tire monitor?
We are using the TireMinder for use with the phone. ua-cam.com/video/gXBzXAGkBnY/v-deo.html
Thank you for the GPS info and what is the tire monitor app?
We use TireMinder for the Phone
Do you have a video of your fifth wheel and your Ram
We have a video about the truck ua-cam.com/video/8LZOqgZr6QQ/v-deo.html and our last tour of the RV was here ua-cam.com/video/gTe3iPv8v9c/v-deo.html but is a bit outdated for the changes.
Great information. Thanks.
Thank you.
i love this app - been using it for a year now. curious, what TPMS work in your phone?
it would be cool if one of these apps would be apple car play compatible.
We use the TireMinder TPMS.
@@AllAboutRVs thanks
Great Advice! Can you use it in a Minnie Van?
I would just you google maps for a normal vehicle.
Thanks
Thank you.
Does it run on a tablet? I'm thinking I'd like to mount a tablet to my dash and be able to split screen an app like that and another app like TPMS or Gasbuddy or whatever.
Thank you!! 😊
So I just downloaded this on Android, I'm not getting live weather updates? I swipe up and it shows weather for 2 city's along the route but nowhere to be worried about.
