Nothing better than being able to stand up in a shelter when camping, especially as you get older with bad knees. Roof tops tents just don't work for us old guys. Had grandpa's old rifle along to? I often have my grandpa's old Ithaca double barrel 20 with me. Thanks for taking us along. Really enjoyed the trip.
As a newly wed, my father in law would take me fishing along the Colorado River for 3 - 4 days with his son and friend and who ever else wanter to tag along. We slept in a large canvas tent and cooked every meal on the fire. When we had enough catfish we would clean them and have them with old fashion potto wedges. It was a great time to be alive. Thanks for stirring those memories and many more.
Those sound like some great times! Glad you got to have those experiences. Those times are some of the best memories for all of us for sure. Take care my friend!
For sure my friend. It’s my pleasure to have you guys along. You;ve all been awesome to be on this journey with. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be sharing my adventures with. Cheers!.

Even though things don't always go like we planned just being out doing a little testing of some new gear and enjoying the time to relax with nature is still wonderful thanks for the trip my friend it was enjoyable take care
Yeah my friend I agree 100 percent with that. No matter what happens its’ just alway nice to get away and be out there for a few days. Thank you. Take care and stay safe out there.
You really are becoming quite the story teller Casey. That’s what videos are about, there should be a story to go with the journey. Thanks for the trip! Cheers

Very nice video. Nice to see truck plus gear in use. My wife tells me to tell you to use garlic powder instead of garlic salt when already using regular salt, and she would like to see you cooking ribs in your ditch oven. I’m here to tell you...they are delicious!!! We can send you recipe. Take care.
Thank you my friend. Your wife makes a great point and tell her I just replaced the garlic salt in my cooking kit with garlic powder. So next time it will be right! I’ve never done ribs but I’m thinking I’ll give that a try. I love them when other people make them I’ve just never gotten around to trying to cook them myself. Cheers!
@@CoyoteWorks01 here’s my wife’s recipe for ribs in the Dutch oven Cut slab of ribs into thirds. Layer in the Dutch oven the first layer of ribs. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, bbq sauce, and sliced onions. Do the same layering with the remaining cuts of ribs, for a total of three layers. Cover. Cook long and slow. Approximately 2 hours at around 250 degrees. Lots of YT videos on how to arrange coals on bottom and top of Dutch oven to regulate desired temp. After 2 hours, remove ribs out of Dutch oven and place on hot grill, add more bbq sauce, and continue cooking on grill for another 10 to 15 minutes, until sauce is glazed. Enjoy!
Casey the first time you brought out that battery powered saw I loved that thing , so I went out a bought the same one. Best new tool I got for my camping gear ......
Nothing like Lodge Cast iron for cooking over a camp fire, very versatile. Also love the old school lever action. I've got a Marlin 30-30, 22 LR and on my shopping list a .357 magnum lever action. Safe Travels and God Bless!
Ha! Yeah always makes the heart sink a bit for a minute! I’ve had that happen when I ended up on the axles. Luckily this time it wasn’t bad. But I bet if I would have continued spinning my wheels trying to go forward I would have sunk pretty deep! Cheers!
Have you considered sleeping in the bed of the truck? I have a drawer system and sleep on top that with a memory foam a mattress. Add a tarp off the end when I'm dealing with wet weather. I appreciate your filming of the old homestead sites. I deal with limited mobility and don't get far from camp.
I have slept in the back of a truck in a canopy before but it’s been a long time. I will probably do that on my next trip out in the truck just to give it a try and see if it’s a direction I may want to go. I am seriously thinking about getting a Decked drawer system for the bed of the truck either way. Seems like a great way to keep a lot of gear organized. Cheers!
Being about 15 years older than you, with severe arthritis in the knees and ankles, I can say I really am an 'old school' camper. I can't manage climbing in and out of a rooftop tent and sleeping on the ground is for youngsters, so I compromised with a Kodiak Canvas truck bed tent. Best of both worlds, I think. Room to stand up and move around and my buddy heater keeps it almost too warm. I just wish we had the juniper trees out here along the Idaho/Oregon border. Have to bring our own firewood in most cases. Keep on truckin' Casey! :-)
That’s a pretty nice set up you’ve got too. I like those truck bed tents. And I love that area on the OR/ID border. I want to get into that area more this next year. Cheers!
I bought a compact Milwaukee M12, electeic chainsaw. I throw it in when i go offroad from time to time. Its about 1/2 the size of yours, doesnt seem to cut quite as fast but works like a champ. Really comes in handy!
Looking at the shrub steppe covered in snow reminds me I never got out for Coyotes this year like I keep meaning to. REALLY want enough squared pelts to make the ultimate camp blanket. Probably wouldn't suck for a Winter Sunday on the couch, either. Glad someone is getting out and about and I can watch. Spending all my time in a truck lately. Kinda like camping, only it sucks.
... Have rolled out to many high country truck camping trips , mostly to fishing spots and trying to find a little seclusion... Not much for the a winter months anymore but never say never .... Looked like a perfect relaxing evening. The gazelle and buddy heater work great together. I soooo love mine. I have 3 winter camp trips set for the next 6 weeks. So excited to get out and get my camping season started this year. The truck looked good with some mud on it! Cheers my friend! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh that’s awesome Jaqui. Yeah it’s a really nice combo. That Big Buddy heater works great in there but it’s almost more than needed. I think I’m going to stick with the regular buddy heater. Cheers!
I looked at your channel, same stomping ground as mine. Benzie, Leelanau, and GT are a MI paradise. I envy you live there. I've been fly fishing, hiking, and 2 tracking those counties for 30 years now. I've got land in the Beulah area, hope to be up there fulltime in the next couple of years.
@@flyfish6473 It is truly a paradise. I am really blessed to live here and I never take it for granted. Thanks for checking out the video. Check out my Instagram page I post a lot of pictures of this area. Buttigiegjacqueline.
love that table i could of used that the other day. l bought one from a yard sale last year its a bit flimsy but suppose it done the job for $5.00 cant complain.
Ha! Yeah for 5 bucks if it worked once or twice you I would say you got your money’s worth! Lol. Yeah a good solid table isn’t always easy to come by. This one seems like it’s going to hold up well though. Cheers!
The old school camping set up is nice. I enjoy it that way as well since to me that is a big part of the whole adventure. The first night we spent in our then new 8x8 tent at Crater Lake involved a veritable cloud burst. I had to set up the tent, rig a tarp to cook under and make camp in the middle of the storm. The tent spots in that camping area were all in little depressions so the next morning we were surrounded by a 6¨ lake of water. My efforts in seam sealing the tent inside and out paid off as we were dry as a bone inside the tent. It is now one of my greatest camping memories. By the way, that rifle set up looks just like my Marlin 336SS, but I have a 1x4 scope mounted.
Always enjoy your videos as they give me lots ideas to incorporate into my own rig. I am currently in the process of sliming down my set up from my van into a Tacoma for more remote overlanding. Your vids with your Grandpa's truck are quite timely in that regard. I will probably go with a RTT on top of some sort of a shell as I'm not too fond of ground tents after a close encounter with a bear in Wyoming.
Thanks. Hope you got a few ideas from it. Yeah that’s one really nice thing about the roof top tents is being up off the ground and pretty much safe from any critters large or small. Have fun with your new set up!
Thank you. Yes it’s definitely a comfortable space. And tents have come a long ways since the ones I used when I was young. I remember when they took 15-20 minutes to set up or even more. So I’m really enjoying having the space and comfort of a tent but being able to set it up in under 5 minutes. Cheers!
Hey Casey, if you are ever thinking about a 4 season tent you may want to look at kodiak canvas tent. They are not bad to setup ( not as easy as yours) they will take whatever Mother Nature throws at it. I have stayed in mine for up to 12 days out of Lakeview Oregon, it handled every kind of nasty weather you can imagine
That’s a good call. I actually have a Kodak Canvas Flex Bow tent. It’s an awesome tent. The one challenge I find with it is it really needs to be staked down well but it is so rocky in a lot of the places I go that it can be challenging to get a stake driven into the ground sometimes. But you are right. For comfort, breath ability, and space it is awesome. Cheers!
Very cool video. Really enjoying the truck camping. I have an older truck I've been thinking about decking out for camping and you have given me some really good equipment ideas. Love your channel!
I’ve really been having fun with the truck and the kind of old school set up. Really enjoyable and can be done without spending a lot of money and without a lot of modifications to the rig. Hope you do get yours out there too! Cheers.
Love the old school pickup/tent camping. You’re spot on with your pros and cons. A rooftop tent certainly provides greater flexibility and maneuverability for overlanding. To get around the lack of flexibility a ground tent inhibits you with, I’ve camped by rolling out a tarp for ground cover, placed a heavy sleeping bag and sleeping pad on top of that and slept in a second bag. The most comfortable camps I’ve ever used involved a canvas wall tent and a wood stove. These are awesome on late season deer and elk hunts. EDIT: The Winchester’92 really adds an extra cool old school factor!
Thank you. Yeah I enjoy the winter trips too. They end up being a bit different. With shorter days I get to spend a bit more time around the fire and around camp relaxing, cooking, etc. Enjoyable in a different way than the exploration focused summer season trips. Cheers!
Really enjoying the truck camping and old school setup. Thanks, Casey, for making these videos. Funny the commercials that air, some great man soap commercial, and then a travel to Saudi Arabia commercial. That was odd! Keep them coming, and tell us more about your truck and gear, love it.
A wonderful video! It's fun to think about the very tough people out there who originally homesteaded and could not even conceive of you out there 150 years later.... You with your 4wd horseless carriage, your 500 lumen lights using no oil or gas, and your many-megapixel camera recording your entire adventure. I appreciate that you respect their struggles, and give us all a glimpse of what they built with their hands so long ago. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Casey I like the truck camping thing, I use an old cracked fiberglass shell. I can't find a soft-topper for my Toyota t100 with a 8 foot bed. But I can haul tents and such and set up the tent nearby. I will have to use that tent for a family reunion this summer because Washington motels are now using motels for long-term housing. The housing crisis on West Coast absolutely sucks. Love your videos, man.
Another great episode! I really enjoy how creative you get with your meals. It’s a way to pack light and still have a great dinner. I hope as the weather warms up you can get out more. We really do miss your uploads.
Thanks my friend. It’s a Model 92. I’m the 4th generation in my family to shoot it. It was my great grandfather’s at one time. I even have a picture of him holding it.
You need to buy a rio camp cot with out end bars . I have used cots like yours for years after trying a rio camp cot I will never use nothing but rio from now on. It sets up so fast and put away in under a minute. Real comfy to.
THANK YOU CASEY FOR GETTING BACK TO ME ! I'LL HAVE TO CHECK THE TABLE OUT & MAYBE AN ELECTRIC CHAINSAW , & SEE IF THE BATTERIES CAN GET CHARGED FROM THE TRUCK . BE SAFE !
Absolutely love these truck camping videos I spent my childhood camping like this and still try to as much as I can. I do have a nice camping trailer which is nice on my hunts and colder camping trips but there is just something about tent camping I love and the simplicity of it. Also sleeping in the bed of the truck is very comfortable and warm to if you want to simplify it even more. I have a 2005 silverado I drive so I relate to your grandpa's truck a lot.
Maybe the trip didn't work out as you hoped but it was sure enjoyable for me to see how simple it really is to go camp with minimal gear. Thanks keep up the adventure.

Thanks for taking us along Casey! I’m sitting here at home in 70 degrees thinking about how nice it would be to be out in the woods.
Old school is all I know! I find having less items and keeping it very basic/simple works best for me....
Very good, Casey, another useful video for beginners for sure. Just can't beat the Central/Eastern Oregon desert for scenery and fun camping.
Looked like a good adventure. I need to get out even in the winter. Love the rifle.
I agree. I think about that stuff all the time when I’m kicking around those old homesteads. We definitely have it easy these days. Cheers!
This is a cooking channel with some cool scenery and nice driving.
Thanks for another great video. Love the truck & the old school camping!
Loving the rig! Something about an old 4x4 truck that makes offroading and camping better.
Nice trip! I like the Winchester. It looks like an 1894 model.
I’ve never even heard of that. I’m going to google it right now!
THANK YOU CASEY FOR GETTING BACK TO ME ! I'LL HAVE TO CHECK THE TABLE OUT & MAYBE AN ELECTRIC CHAINSAW , & SEE IF THE BATTERIES CAN GET CHARGED FROM THE TRUCK . BE SAFE !
Beautiful, wish I was there.
Thank you. It is gorgeous country out there!
Great stuff, Casey!
Thank you my friend!
Maybe the trip didn't work out as you hoped but it was sure enjoyable for me to see how simple it really is to go camp with minimal gear. Thanks keep up the adventure.
