As a boy In the 1950s I grew up on an old homestead similar to this near Hailey, Idaho on Deer Creek. Our place had a cookhouse about 12" away from the main two-story house, a small woodshed for the house and cookhouse, and an outhouse even further away and off in the shade trees. The cookhouse had a covered walkway from the house to the cookhouse and contained a small bedroom, dining, large pantry, and cooking areas. That way the main house with the bedrooms and parlour didn't get overheated by all the cooking activity. In the house parlour, we had a large pot-bellied stove for heating the main house. In the cookhouse, we had a very large Monarch cookstove with a hot water reservoir on it. We didn't have electricity and used kerosene for lighting. We had a telephone mounted on a cookhouse wall and the telephone line reached our house via the top wire of the fenceline, with no telephone poles. In those days almost everything we had we ordered from Sears and Roebuck catalog. Anyway, I have seen a lot of changes in my lifetime here in Idaho, and seeing an old homestead like this one sure stirs up my heart and memory banks LOL...

We're in an old hill farm in Vermont built in 1867 (that likely needed work in 1868..) square nails abound, every project kicks off 5 more etc etc... the old dumps on the land are something though. Always jealous of your wide open views. Thanks Casey, stay well.

Hey Casey! Nice job showing us an impressive homestead site. What little they had, they fixed up with interior molding pieces and looked like wallpaper, too. As the family grew they added on the room, and extra stoves to cook, as you mentioned trying to feed so many family members. Gravy Gulch! Love the history how places were named, and this one makes total sense, with wheat flour and sheep's milk to make gravy. Looks like I have to up my ramen game... that looked really good and satisfying. Smart choice avoiding rattler contact or a bite. It's not worth getting injured, and it sure ain't worth it for any video content. Good to see the Vernlander out again, and the smile on your face driving it says it all doing what your Grandpa did and taught you to do. Keep living well, my friend! 73. Pete - KI7LIL

You always have awesome adventures I really enjoy them you just did a wonderful job on this this particular Journey love the pictures that you took time to gather and edit in with the structures that you found.thank you for showing all the areas of the structure even though it was a little risky...good job! Lived in the country for a while, coming from the big city, snakes were constant but we're never a threat rattlesnakes are the best because they warn you if if they're bothered by you. They get a bad rap so many people are fearful of snakes. I never hear or know anyone that got bit. Many times I've sat down right beside one even with my dogs and they were unaware of my presence deep asleep. It's the snakes in the city that linger waiting for the opportunity to strike those are the snakes people should worry about not the nature ones

    • @CoyoteWorks01

Great video Casey. The setup of the homestead is exactly how my dad grew up on the family ranch. The parents and girls slept in the main house and boys in the bunkhouse; in piñon juniper country no less. I didn’t notice a stove pipe on the bunkhouse. Did I just miss it or is there not one? You certainly made the right move on the rattle snakes since discretion is the better part of valor. I’m looking forward to your video on your adventures with that well. Lastly, your comments on the juniper encroachment and abatement were spot on.

That’s really cool to hear your dad grew up the same way on the family ranch. That’s a good point about the stove in the bunkhouse. I don’t remember seeing a stovepipe but I didn’t really look. Next time I’m there I will check it out. Cheers!
