    You don't need to dig very deep into watches to hate fashion watches.
    I hate them because their business thrives on the wide audience's cluelessness : it's a story about businessmen buying cheap goods made in China and reselling them as "luxury" for a price that (not-versed-in-watches) consumers are willing to pay because they are fooled into thinking it's of good quality. Like "Hey I'm looking for a watch, I'd like a good quality one so I'm willing to pay more than $20. Let's say $200. Oh wow, this watch so happens to be in that price range".

      Rob T Yeah and the problem is that these fashion watches often don’t last a long time. And if all you cared about was telling time, why not buy a $2 Walmart watch or just use your phone? Terrible, shitty argument.

    I have 3 main gripes with fashion watches:
    1. The way they market themselves
    These fashion watches market themselves like they are built to meet high standards, and that they are a "luxury" item. No, no. no. Most of them are cheeply made, and has nothing to do with luxury.
    2. Bang for buck
    They are waaaaaay to expensive considering what you get. Ties pretty well into my last point, so I won't say anymore about this one.
    3. The way "non watch enthusiast" perceive fashion watches
    This is the one that bothers me the most. There is nothing more enfuriating than someone asking if that is a "insert generic fashion watch here" and then rolling there eyes and just saying "oh" when you tell them it's a Seiko. I have often overheard conversations between (not to be generalising, but often girls), being so excited about their Daniel Wellingtons, but when you tell them anything about your own watch, mine generally being a Seiko SARB035 or SARB017, they just disregard you, and have no respect for other established brands. It can really piss me of when they just don't care, and it really hurts my watch loving heart.

    • @PhiNguyen-vg2zo
      @PhiNguyen-vg2zo 6 років тому +13

      Agree with your first two points but your third is pretty absurd. This unbeknownst ignorance of what is a quality watch versus what is a cheap fashion watch can't have its blame attributed to the masses. You can't expect someone to know the difference in quality of build between a Sarb and MVMT if they don't spend their time as a casual watch enthusiast. And when you mention something like, "because girls can't appreciate it" (just paraphrasing), you sound like someone who's had that exact experience, but what you don't know is that aesthetic value may well have more weight than overall true value. You can't blame others for liking another watch out of ignorance, just as you can't blame a non-soccer fan to barrack for Ronaldo out of ignorance too. Let all this shit go and think positively and trust me, you'll see this passion in a new light.

    • @BonDijon
      @BonDijon 6 років тому +2

      To be fair to those girls, if they enjoy watches only for the aesthetic and enjoy the minimalist aesthetic of DW's ofc they wont be excited about the more robust looks of a seiko sarb or sarb017. If you had a nomos orion they mightve been excited.

    • @Hyttelus
      @Hyttelus 6 років тому +2

      I wouldn't exaclty call the look of the 035 robust, but you've got a point. Once showed them a rose gold Orient Bambino, and they actually seemed genuinely interested.

    This year I purchased a Vincero chronograph, obviously before I started to learn about real watches. I loved it, but at some point the finish started to wear off, which was odd to me considering their “high quality luxury” branding. So, I decided to replace the watch under warranty, and then sell it in order to buy an orient bambino open heart. Same esthetics, slightly more expensive, but an infinitely better watch. I have the watch community to thank for this!

I just want a couple nice looking watches so I can change up my look every so often. I also really hate how these cheap watches are sold for so much more than they're worth.
    Again though, not a snob. My favorite watch is my cheap WallMart brand watch because it was a gift from my girlfriend.

    Hey Brock, love the video. I'm 21, but a huge watch guy, it wasn't always like that so I was more info aesthetic than the actual craftsmanship of the timepiece, I got a DW watch for like 99 dollars and I was so into it, the more I researched, the more I realized I could've gotten a Tissot or a Seiko 5 sports or something else I'd appreciate more, but I do credit the DW with getting me more interested in watches and wanting to research the best timepieces within certain price points. So I think depending on the person they can help to create that interest, because a lot of the youth are into aesthetic then become obsessed with timepieces and realise hey this isn't an automatic watch like that Seiko I saw online or whatever. We just need more guys to do what you do, provide alternatives and the info. Respect Brock!

    Who would have thought channels targeting the 1% would be so popular? I'm not the type tho that would waste money on a $4000-$40000 watch for no other reason than to show off how rich I am if I ever become rich.
    Then again I only view a watch as a functional piece and I don't look at other people's watches to judge how worthy or what class they are in.

  • @masqueofhastur

    What I like about Daniel Wellington is they pushed the market to start making slim watches. When I was looking for watches to buy about a decade ago, the only brand offering slim watches was Skagen, and every single one of them was a shade of gray with maybe a blue tint to it. You couldn't even get a plain stainless steel case with a white dial from Skagen. And then DW comes along and makes a slim elegant watch with a rose gold case a thing (and you can buy it at a local department store, instead of having to trawl vintage watch sales to find something similar). And any other brand was following the trend of bigger and thicker, where people were specifically seeking out Unitas 6947 based watches so they could have a watch with "wrist presence", and the display caseback would show the movement to the edge of the case. That's cool, people can have their preference for bigger watches, especially guys with bigger wrists who need a bigger watch for it to look proportional. But those of us with smaller wrists who wanted an actual slim watch were going forgotten.
    As for the quality, quartz is objectively better than mechanical. It's more accurate, and it's tougher. It's fine to prefer mechanical for aesthetic reasons (that it's impossible to find an affordable quartz watch where the second hand hits every index perfectly irritates me quite a bit), or if you want to ogle the movement through the display caseback. But quartz is better. And it allows for a slimmer watch. And it's cheaper (how often does that happen, where the cheaper option is superior?). So people crapping on fashion watches for being quartz are standing on pretty thin ice.
    Now there's plenty of choice again for slim watches. I could get a Christopher Ward C5 Malvern 595, naturally for a lot more than a DW, but it's also higher quality (except the movement is mechanical, but aesthetic preference). Would they have released it if Daniel Wellington hadn't disrupted the market? I don't think so, they started out with diver not-quite-homages, because that's the most popular watch design among watch enthusiasts.
    So even if I won't buy a Daniel Wellington (the backwards D bugs me about as much as the seconds hand not hitting each index), I'm glad they hit the market, I'm glad they got popular and people started buying them, and I'm glad that enough people weren't bothered by the backwards D or even think of it as something fun and not taking itself too seriously.

    Hey Brock,
    You’ve always been quite transparent as far as your earnings go and how The Modest Man generates revenue.. I’m sure one of those “fashion” watch brands (i.e. mvmt, the fifth, vincero, original grain) have reached out to you for sponsorship.. just wondering if you can share or have any idea of how much cash these companies have tried giving you and/or dishing out to the big channels here on YT like RMRS TMF Alpha M Alex Costa. I’ve begun to stray away from them because their videos have become infested with sponsorships. Also, are people wrong to call them “sellouts”? What’s your opinion on that?

    • @BrockMcGoff
      @BrockMcGoff  6 років тому +4

      Hey Smitty, thanks for the thoughtful comment and question. As far as sponsorship fees go, there are surprisingly few guidelines or standards, so it varies widely from one brand/influencer to another. I mean *very* widely. Some influencers will trade product for promotion, while others charge 5 or even 6 figures to work with a brand.
      I don't judge anyone else for how they run their business, and I do have a lot of respect for anyone who can build an audience and monetize their platform. I happen to know some of the guys you're referring to really well, and they're great guys who have always been really generous to me (and others).
      I just have a different model than they do, which is fine. For what it's worth, I do think sponsored content is going the way of banner ads; people are starting to ignore (in the same way that people are blind to banner ads). I think viewers/consumers are getting really tired of sponsored content and will become wary of channels that publish a lot of it. That's one of the reasons I'm not doing a lot of it - to stay ahead of the curve. I think, long term, it will be extremely valuable (and lucrative) to be known as a trusted, unbiased source of info.

    The thing i hate about 'fashion' watches is they tend to bring out the ugly side of all types of people. You get the fans of them that take it beyond wearing them for looks and sort of brag about them and stick their nose up at value watches under $100, and then you also get the watch enthusiasts that can't understand people wearing watches for different reasons, and place a weird connection between the type of watch you wear and your 'manhood.' It's all b.s honestly. You put it best in your vid...wear it because YOU like it. Don't worry so much about every aspect of your image needing external validation, and don't believe everyone else needs to appreciate the passions that you have. You're no better or worse than anyone else whether you tell time with a Rolex, a Vincero, your cell phone, or the damn clock on the wall. The materialism around watches is silly. All that said, your actual video was great! I enjoy your channel, and this was a good non-enthusiast watch vid, which is tough to find.

However, I have only worn it very occasionally over the past several months - up to twice a month (if at all). I guess it just outlived its hype.

    I have purchased fashion watches at a fair price and I do find the quality isn't terrible, but I have always personally felt something was off: the sunburst dial doesn't feel right, the indices don't seem to match, the hands are off, the shape of the case doesn't fit right.....
    You're totally right that they do get people interested in watches. It's nice to check out what other people are wearing and pining for, compare watches, and talk about what watches other people we know have in a friendly way even if what my friend has is a Daniel Wellington and what I've got is a vintage Omega.

    This is the first video seen that seems to understand the reasons some like fashion watches instead of just hating on them.
    I watched the video while wearing a DW branded watch. I'll admit that it is solely worn as a fashion accessory. It compliments what I am wearing and ties everything together. Silver case, white dial, black strap. The band matches my belt and my shoes; the case matches my silver wearing band and my belt buckle; the watch face matches my shirt. It's a carefully selected accessory, just like my silk tie. It creates an image of success, a powerful force in business.

    Yesterday I ordered a DW watch which I found in sale. It was 66% off the original price, which made it way more affordable, it cost around 60€. I'm honestly hoping it's going to be well worth, besides when buying a watch I'm looking for something fashionable with great aesthetics...Nothing more, nothing less. All in all, if you really like a watch by its looks, buy it. It doesn't have to cost a whacking $600+ to be considered a "great" watch.

    TL;DR Really liked this video because it's not just about watches but marketing and quality.
    It's like everything else. I've bought a fashion watch but for me I know I'm not wearing great quality and I prefer high quality although not necessarily luxury. To me it's fast fashion and I prefer an item with classic style and long lasting quality. Watches to keep. Think about when your in your sixties (it will happen!) and you have a classic timepiece that will be worthy of passing on. It seems as if you have the same sensibility.

    Most unbiased review of fashion watches I have seen - congrats. I probably wouldn't buy a fashion watch because I love mechanical but I don't know why enthusiasts get so hot under the collar about them. I often feel fashion watches look cooler than many established, quality brands. Also let's get objective here: they are more practical than mechanicals: they are lightweight, slim and more precise timekeepers than mechanicals. Also, why do enthusiasts get so worked up about overcharging? Are you saying the Swiss never overcharge for their watchesl? Or is buying a fashion watch for $200 every few years until it breaks really so much less financially savvy than buying a better quality, longer lasting Swiss one for $4000 that will depreciate (unless it's say a Rolex) and need money spent on servicing?

  • @Ranger629

    1 simple sentence; These fashion watches have no craftsman soul in them.
    Not everyone can afford an A.Lange & Sohne, but everyone can appreciate the hard work put into making one. Not everyone can afford a Patek, but everyone can see the hard work went into crafting one. The list goes on and on, but everyone can afford a DW and everyone can see how little work was put into making one. Together with its high priced range, it just simply pisses people off, you're selling something at such an exorbitant price range, but yet you produce such cheap watch?
    I mean come on, 1 DW cost around $100-200. With that same exact price, you can literally pick up a Swissmatic (Cheap, machine-produced, but the brand itself is worth more than DW).

    I think your comparison at the end of your video with the Timex highlights the reason I hate fashion watches. The MSRP for the Timex is $90 while the MSRP for the DW is $230. Both are made in China, with I'm sure similar build quality. Yes, the Timex has more heritage but for a person willing to buy a DW, heritage is not important. But the build quality would be similar. Yet the Timex is about 60% cheaper. If DW and the other fashion watch companies sold them under a $100, I think there would be less hate for them. Great video!

    The thing that gets me about fashion watches is not the actual watches themselves, it is the business model and viral, "I'm better than you" teenage culture that goes into them. After trying to educate people about them people tell me "oh, well I don't like the look of your watches and my DW costs just as much *I'm rich*. I tell them, "That's fine, but don't spent 200 quid for a Daniel Wellington when you can get basically the same watch on Aliexpress for around 15 quid. As I was saying on another UA-camr's watch channel though...
    * incoming shameless copy and paste because I'm "that guy"*.
    "People say I'm a snob for hating DW, Vincero, MVMT. It's not that I hate the watches, I hate the rip off prices. I try to educate people about the Orient Bambino but when they come back and say they hate the domed "glass" I happily tell people to go onto Alibaba/Aliexpress and buy a "simplistic" watch. Apparently I'm a prick for telling them they can get the same watch for a tenner. This is coming from a person who does actually own some beater Chinese watches to compliment my Swiss pieces...
    I tell you who is the worst though, a company called Weird Ape. They sell Hangzhou 2189 powered skeleton watches for £200 and claim to be British made in their marketing. They actually used to sell Jaragars, Winners and Sewors (Chinese Mushroom brands) as their own models, on their website...before eventually setting up shop with their own rip off merchant watches.
    I can say this, I know I hate these overpriced fashion watches but they aren't blatant con men. They use clever marketing to bring the youth in and the "proper" watch companies need to take note of how it is done. People like Weird Ape though? They are just con men. When I asked them what movement they had on launch, they replied with "nothing Chinese". Yeah, that's right lads...when I've literally got the same movement in my Rotary. I was then raped, pillaged and exiled from their Facebook page. 😂 😂 😂 Worst thing for me is they are based in the same city as me so all the idiot jewelers have started stocking them. They look even more horrid in person."
    So yeah, buy a decent watch and F*ck Weird Ape...that escalated quickly hmmm.
    I'd keep my vintage Tressa Lux over a DW any-day but each to their own. I know a lot of watch enthusiasts had humble beginnings with fashion watches so in some respects they have their place for the watch community... in an age where the generic attitude is "you can check the time on your phone and you don't need a watch".

    • @stevenhickenjr
      @stevenhickenjr 6 років тому

      And as a follow on...yeah all these pricks are misleading in their marketing so bollocks to all of them 😂. I'm sure one of the brands talked a load of shite about how inaccurate mechanical watches and their watches were better quality than Rolex.

    Fashion watches are shit. Spend your money on reputable brands like Seiko, Orient, Timex, Tissot, Hamilton, etc.
    Daniel Wellington watches are literally just rebranded Chinese watches. You can get them on alibaba for under $10. DW will sell you the same watch at a 400% mark up. Buy a DW if you’re a moron and like throwing away money on garbage. If you like DW, cool, but just know they’re are hundreds of better options.

  • @KaiserSoze679
    @KaiserSoze679 Рік тому

    I'm with you on pretty much everything but the heritage angle. To me that's the sort of thing that really only matters to people who are watch history buffs and shouldn't be acted as if it's "objectively better" the way higher quality materials and craftsmanship are. If a new company popped up tomorrow and was making Rolex quality watches at a lower than Rolex price point, I'd lean in their direction, cause as far as I'm concerned the heritage angle is just another example of paying for a brand logo, but with a bit of "look how much I know" flex behind it.
    I just want a watch I'll like, well made, at an affordable price. I could care less who makes it, as long as they do so well.

  • @desmosnob
    @desmosnob 5 років тому

    The vast majority wouldn't care about heritage or craftsmanship when it comes to watches just because they are not watch enthusiast and for them it doesn't matter. And honestly, why would that be a bad thing. If you care, good for you. I you don't care also good for you. In addition there are are different shades to this. A DW or similar would typically use a Miyota or a Ronda quartz movement and none of those movements are bad movements. They will last for many years. Brands like Michael Kors, Armani, Gucci, etc. probably uses some cheep Chinese movement and charges $300+. So if you pay $230 for a watch with a Japanese quartz movement, 316L stainless steel, sapphire crystal glass, and some somewhat hight quality leather strap with it, it will last. And I think $230 is not much of a steal for someone that doesn't really care for more than the looks.
    As for the "affordable luxury" I completely agree with you. Luxury is per definition NOT affordable so that is indeed quite some unethical marketing.

    Fashion watches ultimately serve as a stepping-stone for a lot of individuals to be introduced to the hobby. I probably wouldn't have my collection of Seikos, Citizens, Orients, Casios, Hamiltons, Time-x's and etc if I wasn't given an overpriced and honestly pretty crappy Armani watch as a birthday present years ago. Not many of us are fortunate enough to be brought into the hobby by a well educated collector that can explain to people why a 250 dollar fashion watch is usually inferior to a 50 dollar watch made by an experienced brand. But at the end of the day i'm happy that I was given that Armani watch because it sparked my love of watches and got me digging deeper into the hobby.

    I agree 100%. Fashion watches have their place and I have a few Timex with canvas bands in this category but they are not my go to watch. My daily wear are my Tag, Hamilton , and Casio. I recently did a review of my best watches under $50 and most were from a great company, Swiss or Japanese movement, mineral crystal, and quality band for what I would consider a great price (www.GentlemensManual.com).
    If you understand that a fashion watch is not quality and not meant to last, feel free to buy one for the look and you will not be disappointed. Just know what you are buying and make an informed decision.

    Oblivious to this apparently controversial topic until now, the last couple of years I've worn Triwa and Rolf Cremer (a subtle one). I like both quite a bit. They are subtle, they suit my style and somehow I rarely ever see a similar looking watch. My gripes are that the lenses aren't as scratch resistant as they should be and the straps do wear noticeably (leather). They need to be replaced maybe every two years.
