Still, so many comments about selling and giving away the cameras to people who want/need them, even though he clearly explained that he cannot give these to ANYONE under ANY circumstances. He is under contract.
I would say this particular contract is unethical, it promotes dirty recycling. No personal or otherwise sensitive data is stored in the cameras memory, therefore resources and energy are wasted on 'scrapping' just to have at least some of the materials go right back into the same product.
@Taylor and what I'm saying is, someone like this who has access to and proof of these type of lots should fucking sue these companies for wrecking our planet.
Instead they take their 2 cents on a dollar of market value and say not my problem. I'd RATHER it go into a landfill, that way at lest somone could come along and save them afterwards
You have to wonder if maybe there was a defect with the camera, maybe with the wiring in a specific lot. Could have made them a safety risk... Hence the reason for the destroy only. Not allowing resale. Because if there was something wrong with them the company would be liable... I am not saying that is why they did that just a potential reason...
Would you be able to sell components, such as all those Ethernet patch cables? I see a package of 6 1-foot patch cables on Amazon for about $9. So it might be worth your time to try and sell them on e-bay in lots of 10, 20 or 50. The Ethernet patch cables are the ones with the plugs that look like a wider than normal telephone plug.
I must confess, I had the same thought ... That some of the elements of the kit were worth almost nothing as scrap, but as manufactured items, they would retain value. Those cables were in original wrapping ... perfect for trading. Obviously, as others have mentioned, he knows how he runs his business. ... but when you have a large quantity of packaged 'standard' components, they will have value to small scale manufacturers / retail outlets. These items are still current; it's not like they are outdated. Anyway, it's his biz so he gets to decide; and maybe he just can't be arsed to shift them by other means.
Was the destruction order based on them being a security risk? Cheap IP cameras have weak security in relation to default usernames and passwords that have lead to websites hosting live cameras of people's lounges, gardens and property.
All the people complaining about destruction and waste. This is the life cycle of electronics people. And its not really that wasteful because most of it get repurposed as recycled raw materials. only a portion of it end up in landfills, this man is doing a service to the community by breaking these things down when they would otherwise just be buried in a hole in the ground.
Those inner white boxes would have sold well as a job lot on eBay!! I’ve sold batches unwanted envelope boxes from work quite often and made quite a bit of money. That’s my way of recycling 😉
I see such potential there. Those empty, unbranded white boxes would be worth something to a fledgling business looking to ship their goods. The cables, adapters, mounting hardware, etc are all worth enough to make selling them worthwhile.
I was wondering what was in them boxes. Yesterday was large scrap day for me. No computers at all. I did find a like new carpet shampooer, that i sure will put to use in my house. It is incredible the items those in the wealthy district tosses out. I found a couple real nice walnut cased, but older Sansui speaker columns. Keep up the good work Ben,you still need a pair of gloves. Their Trash is my treasure.
In Sweden some yards take the power supply unit at transformer / electric motor price, then the cable at a fixed wire price which is more or less the same no matter what type of cable it is unless its really thick.
You could always sell the parts. The self tapping screws. The brass standoffs. The screw inserts from the abs. Sell them in lots. The standoffs are useful for electronics projects. Also the connections if you decide to desolder them.
Those are Vivotek IP8131W or thereabouts - they are 1MP 1280x800 cameras. A bit old now so I have no problem with him scrapping them - at least they are being recycled and not buried or burned. Anyone who really wants a decent camera can get a Xiaofang 1080P camera for around £15.60 / $19.90 or cheaper on AliExpress
My main yard buys the gold connectors for .08 cents a pound. I always cut them off. Also the phone wire you called low grade in my area pays way more than your mid grade wire. There is more copper content. I separate all those wire/cord types. This is just like I was saying in another comment. Every state in the U.S. or other Country's scrap yards pay different prices. Interesting. No yard in my area takes plastics like that for the camera. All that is actually burned in giant incinerators that power the whole plant. It is all clean burning and there is no waste materials. Take Care.
My bet is if you read that contract closer. It says you can't sell it intact because you are allowed to dispose of the scrap. Or you wouldn't be allowed to even sell the screws and so on. So take the units apart and remove the labeling and sell it as a diy kit to be put together. You know for hobbyist. You probably can sell them for more than $30 each then and you still won't violate the contract. But the amount of effort you are putting into it. Hell my time is worth a lot more than that. If I couldn't do what I said above I would have told them keep it.
Even if that was possible, its a simple way of making sure the company won't contact you ever again. Not good for business, as much as I would've loved seeing these devices get a real "second life" instead of scrapped
OMG this is killing me. I do video for a living. Seeing new stuff being destroyed even tho it's cheep cameras that someone could have used is a Shame. I know folks that can't afford to buy a system that could have really used stuff like that. Wow I wish I could get a shit load of cameras like that, but o well.
he put his thumb over model number for a reason ;) every time he scraps somthing and lies about its actual function or value, my respect for him dies a little.
What part of HE’S UNDER CONTRACT do you guys not understand? He already explained it in this vid that either he take them and destroy/scrap them or not get them at all. Would you rather see them go to a landfill? 🤦♂️
eWaste Ben .Im sure you have enough to do scrapping what you scrap, Please take a second to look up Precious Plastic Australia,. If they are close to you they might be able to reuse some of the plastic that you have to go to the land fill. Im not part of this organization but I do like what they do. Hope it will help
I'm a little surprised you didn't opt to make aluminum ingots from the aluminum/iron parts via your smelter. (obviously tossing out the iron after pouring the aluminum out)
Hi, Nice job. Is there any value for you in the old TV's and monitors? As far as the smaller boxes it's a shame that you can't find an ebayer that sells smalls, I know I would have given something for the bubble wrap and those good quality boxes - have you bought bubble wrap recently? Or good boxes? - it's a thought, is this your full time job? I need to look into doing something like this, something to do on my good days,.. Thanks! Bob Ordewald Staunton Virginia USA
It's always funny to me how many people criticize your methods and disagree with your scrap-value estimates. Obviously you've been doing this for a very long time and you know what you're talking about - likely more than they do.
Yes Ben it is an expert! But people criticize because they are different. And what is true in Australia is not in Europe let's say. and yea.. that;s why. But people have to take the main idea and apply it to their situation. Have a good day!
Hello! I watch all these videos as he makes out, breaks the technique, the barbaric approach, it is better to sell on the Internet auction than to break, stupidly and thoughtlessly.
I've also had contracts to "destroy" hard drives. A lot of people say why don't you resell them! Well, if I have a contract to destroy them that is what I do. I also have a yard here that shreds them and gives certificates of destruction for free and at the same time the buy the shredded material from me. Take Care.
Well thats a bit of a false equivalency, hard drives for many are a security issue and it is very common to destroy them for just that reason. These cameras are new in the box from Taiwan and clearly never been used. It would make far more sense to resell them.
I'd say, you just don't have friends at correct places. back when I worked for Johnson Controls, I had to disassemble and recycle around 200 laptop hardrives [500gb each] trough recycling company. But I made friends there, so I they gave me certificates for every drive as if it was recycled. all I did was I took them home and used software to fill them with zeros and reformat them twice. Data on them were gone for good. And i've sold them for 20€ each. And about data on them... I was really not interested in child porn they stored on them...

Damn all those Ethernet cables, i would of bought a ton of them from ya for 10 to 20 :) those cables are sooooooo useful in server rooms :)
@Jeremy R Why? First off those are without a doubt cat5 cables and they're really short which make them limited to what you can use them for, second point, they're pretty cheap, just get a box and clip your own if you need to wire server(s) room(s). I buy a 1000ft box of cat 6 cable for around $70 and the cat6 plugs are like $5 for 100.
@illuded perception Cat6a cables are not needed unless you're doing lengthy installs. Extra shielding is not required for a server room unless it's exposed to EMI sources, the UTP standard which has some EMI protection through wire twisting should work perfectly fine.
Ben, why don't you include the hard plastic camera cases in with the monitors scrap? They are obviously doing something with that type of hard plastic.
I know what model those are, I'm fairly sure they cant "phone home" or anything. They're worth over 100 bucks intact. I don't know how shipping things like that out of the country works down there, but if you could find a buyer to distribute them in another country for instance, how the hell would they know what you did with them?
Why would he even entertain the thought of potentially pissing off his contacts thus screwing over his business? Plus, he is under CONTRACT to destroy/scrap them. If he is caught selling them in usable condition, he could be sued.
hey Ben check and see if there is gold plating under the solder mask, if there is might be good to put them aside and refine later if you intend to- camera and telecom equipment I often get entire plated boards - i'll grind them up later and process them, last time I refined about 35kg and got roughly 10.6g gold still a decent haul just scrapping but I like gold too much to just give away my obsession for someone else to process >.>
I would also keep all the power supplies. I gutted two dozen 5TB external drives to put into my NAS. They were $30 cheaper than the bare 3.5" drive at the time. I kept all of the 12v power supplies... And used them all in a month. When you're refurbishing and selling on eBay, it's nice to have a bin of new power supplies to include with used items.
I get tired of people asking me the same questions. I scrapped 2 pallets of cisco office phones. Everyone was saying sell them. I try to explain to people you can't just sell them one at a time. It would take years. I get in loads every week of items and have no room to store items. Also I cannot test everything. I've always just broken my electronics down and sold them fast to make room for the next loads. Your probably among my top 5 favorite scrappers here on UA-cam mainly because your honest. You don' have to use a bunch of vulgar language like others. You keep your site clean and professional. Your a lot like me. Keep up the good work and don't ever let the down thumbs people leave get to you. They are just people who don't have a clue how much work is involved in a scrapping business. They also don't understand that every state or country has different recycling laws. In my state I have no place to take television glass so I take it to a goodwill where it can be disposed of. I can't sell scrap plastic. It has to be taken to our incinerators. Just the laws where I live. Take Care. Kerry.
Who said that you need to sell them one by one ? You can sell them all in one time, for a very small price, or sell them in batches of 20 or more. You will earn more money than scrapping it, and more importantly you are doing a good thing for the environment, as scrapping brand new equipment only because for no reason at all is not very green...
You could desolder the DC In connectors and ethernet jacks and the infrared leds and sell them on eBay in 25 / 50 / 100 packs , sell the ethernet patch cables (which are probably copper clad aluminum so not worth recycling for copper)
The transformer with cord. You stated you would cut the pig tail off and recycle the transformer to scrape steel. I have had luck taking a large 8 lbs. sledge hammer and striking the transformer block and being able to separate the copper, PVC and the steel. It all boils down to what is your time worth.
good on you for recycling responsibly.. But man, get yourself some power tools and proper drivers for unbolting things. I can't imagine how tired your hands are from unscrewing all that stuff by hand :-0
In any large company you will end up with cancelled orders, or no longer used or out of date stock or simply not up to new regulations for product or just a better/cheaper product come onto market. Easier to get someone to take it off your hands and recycle and free the space.
Dont worry not only will the company write it off at tax time they will sting you then next time you buy a product off them to cover the losses from these items, its how business works, fuck over the consumer then bitch about lost sales.
This is why shit cost so much in Australia, they scrap thousands and somtimes millions of dollars in usable equipment, write it off as a loss at tax time then include the price of the scrapped gear into the price of the new stock. Ive been at tips when cadburys chocolate, BMW, Bosch ect have dumped security loads worth millions just to get rid of stock and claim a loss, ive even seen truck loads and i mean semi truck loads full of cigarettes and mixed alcoholic drinks just pushed into a hole and run over with a compactor just because, then you as an end user pay through the nose for the products.
why are you not taking out the hardboards from the flat screen tvs and the copper from the computer monitors the old tube ones ....you through out stuff yopu coulkd sell at the scrap yard taking apart the ip cameras are the same as breaking dow those electronics ... theres money in what you threw out ... little confused about why but good effort in recycling
@Taylor Yes it does, I have a better attorney then you do, apparently. There would be no evidence that it ever existed as the product now exist. I would at least give the original owner the option to sign a waiver for it to be remanufactured/refurbished on their terms.
I like all of those white boxes. Perfect for shipping.
Ye, I tink he kept some for use

I’d definitely NOT buy that for a dollar.
Sad, something I have been wanting to buy and he is trashing

They get a tax break of some sort that helps them more than actually selling them for what you would be willing to pay. Yay for bureaucracy.

Is your bin any lower of cameras? How about the power supplies, did you keep any additional ones? Thanks Ben
How do you get something like this. How do you get with a company on getting stuff to recycle
how do you find a contract like this?

Were these a destroy only contract because they're the type of ip camera with a backdoor that allows anyone who knows the trick to connect to them?
Ben is great at this gig...and very knowledgeable
Why do people send stuff like this for destruction ? Insurance or conterfeit of what.. please explain.

I want one how much are they won’t u sell some
Did you not watch the first 6 min mate He is under contract
Your recycling centre looks fantastic
Most epic unboxing video ever!
13 hours for 30.00 worth of copper. Congratulations
The blank white boxes could be sold as GIFT BOXES easy money !
How much for a box of 10
So he doesn't get paid for the cardboard and plastics?
Here in the east coast of the US every Wed. they take our cardboard, paper, glass, and most plastics all in one recycling can.
I have had luck taking a large 8 lbs. sledge hammer and striking the
transformer block and being able to separate the copper, PVC and the steel. It all boils down to what is your time worth.
Great video think you shouldn't store boxes against your home's wall.and it will cause damp 👍♻
Love you show...great job👍
Your scrap prices seem higher in Melbourne than they are in Perth 😢
good on you for recycling responsibly.. But man, get yourself some power tools and proper drivers for unbolting things. I can't imagine how tired your hands are from unscrewing all that stuff by hand :-0
Ben, you should try to cash on your introduction catchphrase. A lot of big youtube channels supplement their income with the merchandise.
for the mounting bracket the aluminum with the steel sleeve cant you just give it a wack with the hammer to break the aloominum
why didnt you sell them
Because he's signed a contract to destroy them. If he sold them the company would take legal action and he wouldn't get any more lots.

haha wonder how many computers were taken.... a nice video cut after looking in that bin :)
as an electronics enthusiast, i always have a sad feeling when i think how much used/working or new stuff gets discarded...
he is under contract
He went out of his way to hide the model number. I bet they were not as junk as he was implying.
One wonders why someone would buy 500 IP cameras and then toss them out. Government waste? Incompetence?
In any large company you will end up with cancelled orders, or no longer used or out of date stock or simply not up to new regulations for product or just a better/cheaper product come onto market. Easier to get someone to take it off your hands and recycle and free the space.
Good point. Would make sense for why he's not allowed to resell them
Cheaper to just throw away then ship them back
tax reasons
Dont worry not only will the company write it off at tax time they will sting you then next time you buy a product off them to cover the losses from these items, its how business works, fuck over the consumer then bitch about lost sales.
Australia... What a weird place.
Nice recycle . Wish we had places in states like that .
why are you not taking out the hardboards from the flat screen tvs and the copper from the computer monitors the old tube ones ....you through out stuff yopu coulkd sell at the scrap yard taking apart the ip cameras are the same as breaking dow those electronics ... theres money in what you threw out ... little confused about why but good effort in recycling
Thanks for the vid Ben keep them up love Em
Look like normal chickens, why do they sound so strange from down under.
There is something wrong going here. I don't get it. What a shame ...
25:40 "me and my chicken" aww so cute
looks like a nice productive day
I will "destroy" the stuff for double what you will get for scrap. Read my small print definition for "destroy" !
@Taylor Yes it does, I have a better attorney then you do, apparently. There would be no evidence that it ever existed as the product now exist. I would at least give the original owner the option to sign a waiver for it to be remanufactured/refurbished on their terms.
OMFG suuuuuuch a waist . Whyyyyy ??

Did you not watch the first 6 min mate He is under contract
@@aldrinw706 As my lawyer always says, no contract is one hundred percent watertight ;-)
No comment, USA have problems. . . . . Thumbs up for the chicken!
