- Reporters At War: Dying To Tell A Story (EMMY AWARD WINNING)
Reporters At War is a three-part series that takes a long hard look at one of the most dramatic and dangerous careers of modern times, that of the war correspondent.
More than 300 journalists have been killed in battle zones in the last dozen years, some 200 of these having been deliberately targeted by their killers.
The War in Iraq’s rate of attrition is the highest ever. Though 63 died in the Vietnam between 1963-1975, it’s been estimated that at the above rate around 4,500 journalists would die if the Iraq conflict lasted as long as the Vietnam War. Then there’s the psychological trauma of witnessing the brutality of war close-up, constantly, day in, day out, over long agonising periods of time. No wonder nervous breakdowns, marital break-ups, alcoholism, etc affect war correspondents to a degree unexperienced by most ordinary folk.
Reporters At War also examines the ever-changing circumstances that the war correspondent must file their stories under and the evolving technology that is supposed to make their job easier…that, at least, is the theory. It also looks at some early examples of how technology aided and abetted the faking of war newsreel footage, the impact that television may have had on the outcome of war and the pressure that reporters now find themselves under in the satellite-driven, 24-hour rolling-news era that they now unwittingly find themselves starring in.

thanks so much for your contribution. I am Vietnamese and was born in a peaceful phase when is no war as well as no starvation. I am now can look back the past to see, think what happened partly, it was so so sad. I indeed appreciate and love your work.
That is very gracious of you to say. I am sorry for the war, but if there is a silver lining, many Vietnamese people came to the USA and made us a better country.
I'm sorry for what your people experienced at the hands of my country (US) and many others. However, Vietnam has repaired itself beautifully and the people really work hard to make their country a better place after so much pain. I've met so many kind, lovely Vietnamese people.
Dear Emerson and to any reporter…dead or alive…your work may have or may have not changed anything, but you have touched our hearts.
Very few can lay claim to that.
The story at 45:00 from Jon Steele is stunning and absolutely terrifying. That schoolteacher that saved them is an angel. I desperately hope that he wasn't killed, but it's very possible that he was. And Steele's experience in Sarajevo was absolutely devastating.. how his traumatic experience led him to go to Sniper Alley and wish for a bullet from a Serb sniper to kill him. It was brave of him to share his stories and the shame that he felt from his experiences. I hope he is well now and at peace.

@@trenajorgensen4309 what does 'W238' mean?
Seeing those little kids and babies was devastating. Poor little angels. How do you get this out of your head?
Robin Cassidy R.N. It makes me ashamed of being human.
You don’t.
You don't you learn to not care anymore..and that's what fucks people up years later
These images of war really bring things into perspective. Such sorrow and pain we bring upon one another. Very Sad....
The dead have seen the end of war. The rest deal with it as human nature.
*This is the 1st documentary where I literally cried from beginning to end!*
All these reporters who risked their lives for the sake of media should've been given medals of honor as well, and a lifetime worth of counseling!
*this is why soldiers return home forever changed* Just beyond devastating!!! 💯

This was well done. It was heart wrenching seeing those pictures and videos. I respect these reporters/journalists going into these places not knowing if they will make it out alive.
Thank you for sharing this everyone should watch it.
Whenever this subject crops up, the first person I think of is the late Neil Davis, an Australian 'video journalist' who travelled with the VC during Vietnam and captured some of the most iconic footage of that war.
Also Hitchens.
If it weren't for journalists, and people like whistle blowers, we wouldn't be informed. I admire the courage you all have to go out there in the middle of a war and report history in the making.
P
War is the absolute worst humanity has to offer. Those who call for endless war and death have no clue what it is those who fight the wars and those who report on them experience. The sounds, smells, images and memories never leave you. The death of innocence haunt you until your last breath. Anyone who says any differently is either being truly dishonest with themselves or are heartless, soulless and godless.
24:10 Her words are so sad. She speaks with anguish and regret. She must have suffered for her decision.
Your time stamp is off g
So agree, her words were so intense, such sadness
I wish she would know that her work does make a difference.
I was born in East Africa had to leave due to civil war, moved to Libya, Egypt and Europe before living in Australia. If it weren't for people like her and political activists, my family and I probably wouldn't be here let alone alive. Beautiful woman! ❤
I am so happy that you found a home here in Australia. Every person who arrives from somewhere else in the world adds so much and I am really grateful to you all.
Where were you born? Was it in Rwanda?
I'm really happy you and your family survived ❤🇫🇴🇬🇧
The woman at 15:43 ended her life in 2004 when she found out she had Parkinson's disease. She was 75

I really appreciate the lady reporter of Vietnam reporting the actual consequences of war to the ordinary people for whom the stupid war is being fought
It is not, the fights have always been instigated by heartless powerful, but anyway unbiased information is so important
Pointless war it was.
All war is horrific!
Man, it was so nice to see Andy Rooney again. He stayed with the show until he was 92. Miss that guy.
It was nice seeing him. Can you imagine what he would say about the world today?
I have huge respect for these war correspondents. Thank you for sharing this documentary.
Yeah we try our best for the generation to come so we can tell our history
i watched this this documentary maybe 13 years ago and never forgot it, but could never find it anywhere. thanks for uploading this.
The pen is mightier than the sword! Dear Journalists and war correspondents never give up. The world needs you now more than ever.
That was brilliant. Thanks for the upload.
2:09 Loaded on an ambulance and still holding that giant camera like it's a baby. Now that is dedication.
That journalist in Europe pushing the man out of the way to put a camera in a dying girls face deserves all the angst.
It makes me feel so ashamed to hear someone from the American military defend our guys killing journalists.
Cry about it

Hard to watch but very informative. Thank you for uploading.
Indeed. Heartbreaking.
We are the only species on this planet that realize how awesome and precious life is and yet we are the only ones that take it away on such a massive scale. Why do we keep doing this?
Cryptocurrency1607 money and religion
Because we have been brianwashed by the governments to believe that this honorable and right. But, how can it be? And so, if you trust in the Bible, this is what it says regarding the sacrifices the nations (countries) US included. This is taken from 1 Corinthians 10:20 and reads as follows: "20 No; but I say that what the nations sacrifice, (your sons and daughters) they sacrifice to demons and not to God;+ and I do not want you to become sharers with the demons.+"
So, there you have it, in a nutshell, clear as day, your sons and daughters are being, in truth, sacrificed from war to demons. Yes, satan has to have his blood sacrifices!
You already answered your own question.
Greed
The worst invention man has ever created is money, think about it
The first image of war I saw was in I think the Bosnian war where a camera shows a guy crawling on the ground then pans down and the guy had his legs blown off. I'll never forget the look on the man's face because to me as quite a young kid I thought he looked calm but it was obviously shock. He wasn't screaming or even wincing in pain, just quite blank faced.
I haven't finished watching yet so I wonder if that video will be in this documentary.
Great post! Also I love the accent of those old British reporters.
Excellent film. Thank you for sharing.
I'm Serbian, and its sad to see. We are all the same blood, same language and same people and its sad to say but this situation and violent unnecessary deaths was the same on our end, was no different to the side told within Bosnia. I've lost countless family including my father and was forced to run from my home and even move overseas to Australia.
Excellent documentary
The Man playing the cello got to me. I cried. That felt almost as powerful as Tank Man.

very balanced documentary, without getting too much into political viewpoints, I enjoyed it. I just wonder why they left out the war reporters that killed themselves due to the pressure accumulated on the job
This is an excellent documentary, thank you.
Bill Stewart was a WCCO television reporter and anchor prior to his death.
His colleagues and friends had to announce on the evening broadcast that he had been murdered.
It was heartbreaking to see and hear Stewart’s media family . . .
R.I.P. and bless all reporters for what you do to bring knowledge to the world!!
i love the female reporter that covered Vietnam. She was so cool at 17:56 with her cigarette !
She passed away in 2004.
she was a bit negative at the end, saying it made no difference
but she was a real hero what with being the first person to interview the locals
yeah she is a captivating person forsure!!! saying her stories were like ice cubes, they just melted away and they never made a difference
Marella lives. Thanks to the reporter for what he did that day. These obscenities must be witnessed.
If people don't know the value of human life at least they should know the cost.
Very poignant - You can't pretend that your stories made a difference, they were like ice cubes, they melted. Very beautiful and so true especially during a politically driven war.
No mercy , for anyone , once the military industrial companies start reaping a profit !
that quote made me come to the comments and actually comment on this movie ....what a powerful thing to say. she is a captivating person
i may be naive. but i think (or rather, i hope) showing and revealing truth always eventually makes a difference.
ALL wars are "politically driven".
Their stories DID make a difference. And continue to do so.
Excellent. Whatever one can say about the Media, these courageous people go into harms way and are not immune to the horrors of war and some have paid the ultimate price in relaying the truth in their journalism. Thank you. God Bless.
They is 2 sides to every story and war so even when they go to a war zone they usually go along with whatever agenda they have so it depends on what side your on. For example if you look at the Falklands British media told the story from their side and the Argentina media told their side to fit their agenda and so on. If me and you were to go to Syria and film i bet we would have 2 different sides to it.
It's really interesting that some of the male reporters described their experiences as exciting, fun, interesting, "besides the horror", and the reporter woman that covered Vietnam war described it as "ice melted in water" as something that made no positive impact whatsoever... Also she mentioned male covered more of the battles and bombs, and stuff like that, and she was more interested in the vietnamese people perspective and impact of the war... Two very different ways to experience similar situations...
It's actually a female reporter who called the war "sexy".
If the reporters couldn’t handle what they were seeing, imagine what the people of these Countries feel? God bless them all🙏
i served in Somalia and SW Asia all over...the impressions reporters have are very similar to what at least some of us soldiers have. WTF am I doing here, when I could be home with my wife and kids!
Yeah except the reporters are mostly lying scumbags who want to see evil win.
Appreciation and respect to all the journalist who risk their life's to show us what's going on in this world
Without a doubt, this is the best doc on the topic that I've ever watched.... the horror.... the horror... the horror... It is also interesting that in the entire time of World War two, we lost sixty-three journalists. In Gaza since October, almost eighty journalists have been killed... To the man who looked into the camera lens and realized that little girl saw herself... please be at peace with what you did. You are not at fault. "If my camera lens could speak, it would tell you things you wouldn't want to hear." -Chuck Jines
24:05 That is one incredible Women.
Something about these Women reporters takes me to what they are feeling and its so incredibly strong. It penetrates the screen.
I wish she knew the true extent of the impact of those/ her stories... Even her portrayal today of the happenings. Thankfully for the world you were not meant to sit in the Hamptons drinking cocktails every afternoon...

One of the best documentrys I have seen on war reporters, albeit one of the saddest that reached down into my heart, your stories and experiences, Maybe as a populace we are to eager to see media back home of the horrors of war while we go about our safe lives. To those war reporters still alive I hope you find some peace in your soul, for those who sadly met their death doing your job, you are now in peace. My heart goes out to you.❤❤❤❤❤❤

People are savage
one of the hardest things ive ever watched
This documentary covers my life in wars. Born in 67'. I'm watching this while we are in day 8 of Putin/Russia invading Ukraine. 22'. 😪 we're never gonna learn.
I've been in the media for 37 years. I'd say cameraman Jon Steele is permanently traumatized.
You see these mild mannered gentlemen that tell stories in polite language of only really getting scared when the sea was on fire. Now that is an example of how to behave, how to carry yourself a true role model.
Stumbled here by accident. What an amazing documentary. Very well done.
24;13 is at the end of what she said... But I just finished hearing something so PROFOUND. .. Go and back up from there and listen to her say it again.
1:33:55 colour me shocked to hear that the IDF use too much force.
😂😂😂 Who would’ve knew. Savage European violence dressed up as something else. ‘israels’ are just Europeans. That’s why every single prime
Minster has changed their last names. Even bibi satanyahu which im sure you know last name was Mileikowsky. Family from Poland. They all changed their names to hide this.
In a war the most painful is injured and dead children.
The people doing those horrible things to innocent people
after watching this..and you still believe in god there is something seriously wrong with you.
This documentaries send a chill down my spine
I guess one can argue that God gives us free-will ON EARTH. After you die, judgement for what you did with that free-will will be served.
So, one can argue that in the end, God is not sitting around letting sin go unpunished.
It's tough to say.
This is sooooo hard to watch it’s makes me Ashame to say I’m a human being , to my fellow man let’s make this the generation of change an peace ✌🏾 or at least try...... who’s with me?
I'm with you Vaneesa. Humanity can do better than this. Unfortunately we don't run the show & the people that do are greedy, power hungry swine with no souls. Have a listen to a song called Generation Z by the band NOFX. That pretty well sums it up. I heard a quote a while back that said - You can go into a pitch black room full of evil, full of darkness, light a little candle & instantly that darkness flees. But you can't do the opposite (from the documentary Wake Up Call). Every positive thing you do as an individual, no matter how small has an impact. These fuckers at the top know this & continue to keep us down to divide, control & dominate us all while the bulk of humanity doesn't realise that individually & collectively we carry the infinite consciousness that can take us to whole new dimensions. Be as informed as you can, learn the systems of corporate control, withdraw consent through non-compliance & we will conquer these fuckheads without having to spill a drop of blood. The one thing they understand is a decrease in profits. They will not fight & fund their own wars. Self sustainability is the key to freedom. Technology is on our side. Smart resourceful people are what makes positive change. Not elite parasites in suits. That's my philosophy anyway. Viva La Revolucion.
Sorry it took me so long to reply, but with that said u hit the nail on the head we need more like minded people like u if we were on top the word wood be a much better place to leave to our kids GOD bless u an spread the word this revolution will be televised!!!
One of my friends said to me a few years ago- If they won't create the reality I want, I'll create for myself. I've been running that philosophy ever since. It's a slow old process as I am not wealthy, but I'm just doing it little by little & being patient. I just feel sorry for the people who don't get a chance because of them being trapped in a bad situation, struggling just to survive. Communities have to start looking after themselves & each other on a localised basis (as best as possible). It's easy to take things for granted as our whole society has been set up for economic slavery, convenience & not individual freedoms, which requires a different outlook & actions. In the end I think it's up to people to make physical change themselves. Crying to corrupt governments isn't going to change anything as they are in many corporate pockets & don't really care about us unless they can profit off something. If you don't already know about it, check out a system of gardening called aquaponics. All the Best to you Vaneesa. I hope things go well for you in the future. The human spirit lives in us all. Collectively we can overcome the bullshit & make a better world for everyone. Peace.
Welcome to life. If you compared the first 18 years of this century to the first 18 years of the last, the pile of bodies would be pretty high already for 1900-1918.
A good start would be to leave GOD out of things. He/she/it is already responsible for enough deaths
Brilliant documentary - as a budding photojournalist I am even now more convinced than ever in the need for continued coverage of all conflicts - brave men and woman indeed! As for James Miller's death by and IDF bullet, there is no doubt in my mind that he was targeted by an Israeli sniper
What a disgusting world we live in. Innocents loose their lives at the hands of the greed and powerful.
What an amazing documentary!
God have mercy on us!
Respect! for true unbiased war correspondents
great documentary. thank you for posting
Excellent video
Thank you
I'm sorry UA-cam....this is a fantastic matter and documentation and you mess it up with TONS of adverts every couple of minutes...f*ck it!
Without journalists, we'd have no idea what's going on anywhere. They are our eyes and ears to the world.
Haha and the story you get changes with their support or lack of it for the subject they are reporting on. Their political leaning sets them apart and their presentation and message varies with it.
The media used to present the facts but now they try and influence their readers.
Sure. They tell you a story. Is it true? Maybe. Maybe not.
What great people, who will go out there for us to get news of what is going anywhere in the world,l salute all of them, those who passed on .... R I P ....

Gerald Rivera even received an "dishonorable" mention in this documentary... Around 1:28 by Jon Steele.
Very interesting documentary, thank you.
It’s unfortunate that we don’t have journalists from the old school. Today’s journalists report their opinions rather than facts. The one journalist gets it right when he says he tried to get the journalists to work together. Today, they’re all reporting based solely off the political bias of their station.
I have a ton of respect for any journalists who go out with members of the military into battle zones. War is ugly. I wish humans were able to get along no matter how different our ideas/creed/skin color/cultures/etc… we don’t need to agree on everything, yet at least we can respect one another enough that we’re able to sympathize and empathize with one another. When we can do that how much closer will we be to peace & unity?
Only problem is we can’t even do that in our own country. Americans are as divided as countries at war… how sad and pathetic is that?
ABSOLUTELY. INSANE.
thank you. Amazing documentary.
Another good one cheers!
