Listen to established contemporary painters Anne Morrison, Julienne Harris and Leah Thiessen discuss the ideas behind their work from the joint exhibition ‘Abstraction’ at Despard Gallery.
Each artist explores the materiality of paint through the language of abstraction, their work guided by process and expression, as well a desire to instinctively respond to their immediate environment. Harris, Thiessen and Morrison individually draw from their close relationship to the landscape, visualising its intricacies, energy and binding connections. All three unique styles challenge how we navigate and perceive the world, offering the viewer a variety of new perspectives to appreciate the familiarity of nature, reinterpreted and open to infinite possibilities.
Studying at the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the University of Tasmania, Anne Morrison’s practice is informed by travel, foreign landscapes, ancient cultures and her home, the small village of Forth and its surrounding landscape situated in the north west coast of Tasmania. Morrison employs a sensitive and nuanced approach to painting that reflects on the intimate connection between body and land, personal experience and memory.
Based near Terranora Broadwater, New South Wales, Leah Thiessen studied at Seaforth TAFE and Southern Cross University. Thiessen uses paint to convey the strong connection she feels to the landscape that surrounds her home, employing the language of abstraction to visualise its energy and spirit. Through bold gestures and an intuitive use of line and colour, Thiessen’s paintings are reminiscent of an ecosystem and an environment which is forever changing, capturing its rich complexities and harmonious balance.
Based in Blackheath, New South Wales, Julienne Harris has been exhibiting nationally since the 1980’s, studying at the National Art School in Sydney, before moving to London to learn restoration and water gilding with Paul Levi and Bourlets. Described as an evolving performance, Harris uses paint intuitively, allowing its natural fluidity to guide the aesthetics of her work. The freedom of abstraction allows Harris to combine her many influences, visualising the subtleties of experience, memory and knowledge. Harris often works both inside and outside of the studio, employing methods of layering and erasure to capture a sense of time.
Abstraction is like tune or rhythm in a song, it's all about feelings and the subconscious mind doing the interpretation of the art work. Beautiful art pieces from all equally talented people!

This is a serious question: If a painter of abstract art wanted to paint a rubbish work, how could he do it ?
Web cannot see paiintings on detail
Lovely presentation of the artists!
Stunning 💖and the exhibit spot was spot on 👌
super art
Abstract artists are always comparing themselves to composers of music, and usually the best of them, like Beethoven. But music is very much tied to principles such as the 12 tone scale, and all the "modes," major and minor, and tune (melody, harmony) and rhythm as one commenter mentioned. Without these principles, music becomes atonal and "modernist," and here the comparison with abstract expressionism is more apt.
Despite all the innovation, abstract painting does adhere to many rules, for example the quadrilateral presentation in a flat plane, a traditional "canvas," the use of paint, brushwork, the gallery system, museum shows, auctions, personality hype, etc, all borrowed from the 19th century.
It should be noted that "modern" art is now over 100 years old.
Really good video. Explains abstraction really well.
Beautiful artworks.
معجب بالرسومات الفنانه القوه الناعمة اناخدام عند الفنانة رسمك حلو اوى الله
Making good abstract art is not a matter of developing a new style, but a new concept, which is much more difficult. There are vastly fewer concepts than styles.
Lovely work
❤☝🌹🌈👀 5/31/22
Je me sens plus proche de Leah Thiessen. Yves Frémin, peintre à Plouézec (Côtes d'Armor)
Adorei 🥰🥰
Wonder....magic
Ladies, in the Olympics any one person only gets a handful of gold in their life, a painter only gets a handful of masterpieces in their lives. Keep up the good work and maybe someday you will get a masterpiece.
Lets face it, all this work has no intrinsic value.
It's made to be sold in a gallery. Cattle market art.
Is it art?
Abstract is for people who want to feel like they understand more than the ordinary joe soap who calls a spade a spade. It’s so untalented people can con mindless sheep out of money. IMO.
An awful lot of art collectors or occasional buyers are far from “mindless sheep” but they happen to see something attractive TO THEM In a painting and so they buy it. Let everyone enjoy whatever appeals to them - if you don’t like it, look at something else.
SCHROTT
Really, really awful! Jmo
