- Meet German artist Friedrich Kunath in this personal interview about his work, life and overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.
“This sense of homelessness permeates my complete oeuvre-this aspect of the ambiguity of our existence. To paint or to make these works is to feel at home. To feel found, to feel understood.”
Kunath grew up in former East Germany, finding out that many of his childhood memories had not been what they seemed at the time. Later a breakdown provoked by alcohol and drugs marked the beginning of his successful painting career, along with an ever-present interest in music.
“When you are in the presence of something great, you feel understood. And your feel that you are not alone. It’s easy as this.”
Friedrich Kunath (b.1974) is a German artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the Braunschweig University of Arts. Kunath’s journey from Germany to Los Angeles is at the core of his works - incorporating German Romanticism and western popular culture with lyrical references, cartoon imagery, as well as still life, nature photography, and commercial illustrations.
Friedrich Kunath was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at the Avlskarl Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September 2021.

What a pleasure to see that there are still such great artists as this painter.
many blessings to him
❤the limits of conditioning..quite the awakening..his art reflects his journey..painting heals us❤
This was Fantastic! “It’s not saying fuck you, it’s still saying I love you” Yes!! Love his paintings and I really enjoyed hearing him talking about his Art. Thank you for this today. I needed it.
Your work feels like prayers packaged up n a way that celebrates and comforts. Your interview was meaningful to me.
Super encouraging. I’m a musician also and there was so many things that’s hard to explain in words but so easy with music, color and form.
Wow what an interesting and talented Artist. He pulled me in. I was mesmerized
Wow very inspiring... I‘m so glad he talked about what he wants to pass on and that he‘s not interested in just the intellectual aspect.
The cheesy is always the truth. Big love for Friedrich’s work.
Let the ‘pop’ draw them and knock ‘em out with the message and emotion.
I really like this smart combination of painting and words. These words could just be the title of the artwork. But the words are written in the painting, they are part of the painting. This is brave and makes me think about even more.
Self taught trying to find it . Just beautiful. ✌️
Emotions are meeting reflection - great and interesting! Thanks for sharing!
What an amazing artist!!! His works are so deep !💜💙🧡
Mi
10/10 would watch again
"A passenger in my own work." Indeed. Wow
His paintings are visually stunning
Beautiful! Thanks!
Keep up the important work you are doing.
Greetings from England
Une rencontre de l'autre côté de l'atlantique....elle m'a touchée et permis de mettre des mots , des couleurs et des formes sur une douce manière de suivre le chemin. Merci à Friedrich Kunath d'être de ce monde et de l'aimer. 💙
Fantastic to see!! Great artist💜
love it 🦊- great listenting to his experience in life and putting his work in context - this piece I'm really loving 13:29
This is so inspiring, this is real art
Am also an artist with a similar background living in Africa and absolutely fascinated about the art and the artist himself
Much prefer the raw stage of the painting as he's doing the intuitive part... great stuff!
Its a beautifull poetic of crossing of Music, image, poetry, fun, romance, story …. Its a State of consciousness of feeling very alive fill with wonder and movement 🎵🎨🎶🎨
Beautiful all arts
I enjoyed it watching
Thank you for sharing
🎨🖌👋💕
Yes ! I hear you! More powers to you
Friedrich is so cool
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
Just beautiful
Brilliant and so inspiring!!! Thank you.
I'm the greatest postmodern painter since the 1980s and one of the greatest postmodern painters in history. Artists keep repeating the same thing since the 80s. And anything new isn't 'it'.
Nice works... and victory. Poul from Denmark.
This is very odd for me. I understand and appreciate what was said. I enjoyed listening to why the images exist. His methods used for getting paint on canvas were fascinating. But when looking at his work, I couldn't help but wish I was looking at something else.
I dig that On the Beach take @ 7:10.... a tribute to a great-not-so-well-known album from a certain Mr. Young.
Great job👍
maybe it will sound cheesy, but its lovely work...profoundly!
He is a good painter. I like him. I like what he says, a good painting draw you in, and you get fucked up and grow.
Very interesting
His work just fucks me up! 🍄🌈
I dig the work.
Awesomeness 😁🙌
I like the David Berman reference
Nice
I really enjoyed Off The Beach
💚🍁💚
reminds me of matt mccormick's work. there's a sincerity and a cynicism to it.
You had me at OASIS
nice
It's like, everything in a sort of cosmic disorder appearing at its opposite field of existance, order
damn, wish i could listen to music a couple days an hour too :P 9:16
Hopefully he doesn’t get kicked out of art school
whats that music? beautiful
I just googled to see if Kunath produced the artwork for Kanye's "Ye" album. No. But I see a reference or similarity
Ja jums patīk īsti gleznotāji, varat arī apskatīt manu kanālu 😀
Yes, good art does draw you in, but I didn't see any of that here.
mmm.
That left eyebrow.
Many love repulsive art.
*Define:* _“Draws you in”_ and _“builds you up.”_ Don’t use vague rhetoric.
5:29 if you leave me....... can I come to ? is by Australian Band, Mental as Anything ! ua-cam.com/video/tSGtg26-TpU/v-deo.html
Hobby von Fr kärcher
Embrace the cost=inefective ? One $ 30 dollar tube of fine art goop in a tube per square inch of expression kind of turns me off !
Wow love means zero ,so profound ,very classical ,takes so long to do landscapes ,seconds to scribble words .
Define " good art".
camp.
Oasis? 🥴 Com'on you set yourself too low.
A damaged person doing interesting things but is dull as dishwater
Ah yes, tumblr
Lol no. Self indulgent and pretentious. He's a poser
Oasis, really?! What is German and Italian millennial boys obsession with Oasis?
He looks gen x?
@@dreamchampagne 74, yes he is!
meh, some technical good skills but kind of try hard content. Any time i see text on a painting im kind of over it.
lmao
Friedrich.... i did the drugs now i have a story to write about. blah.... lame..
Some people take longer to find their way. Not everyone has a smooth road. It’s not lame, it’s life.
America is NOT the only country on the planet. The world don't revolve around America.
Unfortunately it is...
The majority of the world knows this. A large portion of Americans don't think this or want that.
WASTEFUL USE OF PAINT
At least not a waste of air and space like some others.
one of the worst contemporary work, empty, badly painted (on purpose i guess), seems like a street artist using POP mixed with Irony to obtain something bland and aimless, he's got nothing to say about hos medium, painting or art history it's annoying because the man seems really nice and clever, happy for his success tho
exactly.
Sums up the whole of contemporary art lol
I would like to know what makes a painting not empty to you?
@@amososemwengie IMO it would be a work where i can see/feel/think the maturation of ideas put there by the artist - the way he avoid clichés about subject, forms etc. A complete painting is an object who could be complex in its simplicity or simple in its complexity. a work trying to go beyond the simple egotistical desire of the painter, in other words it's like reading a great book who make you think beyond what you read - it's not a clear answer to your really great question, but it's all i got on this rainy sunday :)
@@perditachavez in your opinion of course
