JOSHUA ANDREE - In And Out Of Weeks, Through A Day - PREVIEW
13 November - 7 December 2024
Despard Gallery is proud to announce the upcoming solo exhibition In And Out Of Weeks, Through A Day by early career Tasmanian artist Joshua Andree.
With his first solo exhibition with Despard Gallery, Andree presents a new suite of his delicately executed paintings, capturing the ethereal qualities of the Tasmanian landscape that often evades simple explanation. Central to Andree's inspiration are the inland lakes and coastal regions that trace the perimeters of dense wilderness unique to the West Coast of Tasmania. This includes focusing on the hazy threshold where the sky, land and water converge. Through a low-key palette, expansive gradients and glassy reflections, Andree describes the landscape in state of silent transition, the unfolding weather and waning light drawing us into moments of quietude.
Carefully composed, each work incorporates both real and imagined spaces, the distant mountains sitting in absolute visual harmony with the expanse of the sky. In doing so, Andree manages to convey a range of visual dichotomies simultaneously, including capturing both the weight and softness of the Tasmanian landscape, as well as its sense of permanence, caught in perpetual transition. With no definitive focal point, each painting captures the feeling of being immersed within the landscape, mesmerised by its significance.
Joshua Andree is an early career artist living and working in nipaluna/Hobart. Since graduating from the Tasmanian College of the Arts, University of Tasmania in 2015, Andree has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions nationally, introduced into the Despard Gallery stable in 2023. Andree has been selected as a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the RACT portrait Prize in 2015 and 2019, the Henry Jones Prize in 2018 and 2023, the Glover Prize in 2021 and TIDAL, City of Devonport Tasmanian Art Award in 2022. In 2023, Andree was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Hadley’s Prize receiving an honourable mention, as well as being awarded both the Packing Room Prize and the Peoples’ Choice. Andree’s paintings are held in private collections locally, nationally and internationally.

What a load of trash.
Ha ha! I now want to see more!
beautiful work!!!
when you make a painting do you have how its going to look on someones wall in the back of your mind?
Great art. My order of WOW is 3, 2, 1.
❤ still to this day! My most inspiring teacher. Never has a teacher ever sparked so much inspiration and curiosity in my journey in art education.
Excelente Artista
Excelente trabajo felicidades saludos desde saltillo coahuila México!!!
Good job
Nice work
To me these sort of paintings bring back memories of certain places and with the memory of a place feelings i felt back then, or people that i met. Indeed art doesnt have to be obly realism to make you feel something.
Fabulous-all 3 extremely talented Australian artists. I would add Claire Bremner to the list. Very inspiring!!
can you tell me about the "paint" in the dispensing guns" please
Thank you
Web cannot see paiintings on detail
Je suis admirative très beau travail
🤩
❤🧡💛💚💙
Yes, interesting bloke. I hate slickness too!
I find this cerebral gymnastics about the creation of art, or her so called art redundant. It would be interesting if the art was actually creative on some level… I do enjoy abstract art, and own many pieces. But to be honest some of this stuff being produced is not up to a truly artistic standard that was set buy the artist who created the movement!!!
So… got any book recommendations to learn more about abstract artists? Or videos here on UA-cam? Which abstract artists do you find interesting?

really loved this! Love Zoe's work so much!
I really enjoyed listening to and looking at the work of this man a real artist
Amazing ,Nice artwork
I couldn't get a good look at your work. The camera moved too quickly.
Google her
I set the playback speed at 0.25x for a good look…she is producing some great work!❤️
I am sorry to say that your work doesn't touch me in any sense. I like to see history, faces of real human beings at certain point in their lives which will never repeat in their lives or the person looking for meaning.
what place? Couldn't quite catch the name of the place.
Zoe Grey grew up in Marrawah, a remote coastal town on the northwest tip of Tasmania. Her practice speaks to this place through paintings that act a process of recall.

Interesting bloke. Need more people like him.
Nice work.
The paintings are colourful but convey little emotion. The artist's comments are empty of serious communication. 'Self' 'Place' etc., very shallow.
Honest real and raw is what she is after. If emotionless is what she feels about the place, that's the honesty she is after. Most artists answers in conversations are made up off the top of their heads. Paintings are personal events. You cannot truly remember nor communicate what happened during that particular event. It's not a thinking process. It is allowing space and time happen to self. No explanation would be true to what happened.
Lets face it, all this work has no intrinsic value. It's made to be sold in a gallery. Cattle market art. Is it art?
