I love my Anglican way of worship. I shall forever remain Anglican here on Earth. We are a singing people, singing inspiring praises to the LORD of HOST.
The Anglicans have beautiful Psalm Tones. I am Catholic. I was a student at a Monastery where the Monks used Psalm Tones from the Church of England for the Gospel Canticles.
I'm anglican from Chile, and like so much this music. But in my Diocese the music is latinamerican wtih guitar, I could wish sing a song like this. A hug for all anglican brothers at the Anglican Communion!
You might look to see if there is an Ordinariate community in your area. We have four parishes in Southern CA -- We are Roman Catholics, Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter -- All the beauty, music, Liturgy, incense and being part of the True church!!!
As an Anglican I have had myself be addressed as a "protestant" and as a "Catholic" by antagonistic associations. In fact, to be called a protestant and/or to be called a catholic are badges of great honor indeed! May it be that I am found to be worthy of being called a Christian. This musical setting is lovely. I love the Lutheran liturgy also and experience Lutheran Worship whenever possible.
Psalm 8 1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world * thou that has set thy glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies * that thou mightest still the enemy, and the avenger. 3 For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers * the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him * and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 Thou madest him lower than the angels * to crown him with glory and worship. 6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands * and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; 7 All sheep and oxen * yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea * and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord our Governor * how excellent is thy Name in all the world!
Very nice! The bass really comes through too. York Minster has provided me with some of the most beautiful moments in life. The Evensong is extremely refreshing and whenever I'm in the city, I never fail to attend, even if it means waiting two hours for the next train home!
I was taught in my confirmation class in the early 1970's that 'catholic' in the then called Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S. meant 'universal.' Period. Meaning it was and is worldwide. Confusing because some people think because we "believe in one holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" it means the Roman Catholic Church. It doesn't. The Anglican Church or Communion is the bridge church between Catholic and Protestant Christianity: neither Catholic nor Protestant but both at same time.
In these dark days it's about time Christians of ALL denominations pulled together and stood together - and stopped this ridiculous infernal bickering! We all believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savioiur and our God.
Total perfection from our very own York Minster.A perfect recording around Easter Time. The images are magnificent. Quite often I visit for Choral Evensong which is held in the Choir area.
Thanks a lot my brother. What ails the English man is something I can't understand. Why abandon such a rich heritage that your forefathers had worked so had and bestowed it to the world. Now Islamism had taken over England with its destructive agenda. Even the ordinary Englishman had forgotten that, Christianity is the bedrock of the modern civilization that we're enjoying today. Greed had taken over everything.
Rob Suttie Nonsense. Choirs across all "colours" of Anglicanism sing the psalms antiphonally. I started doing so as a young boy in 1954 in a small Parish Church where the ceremony etc. associated with the "High Church" was completely unheard of.
I never get sick of this beautiful youtube. What I wouldn't give to be in York Minster this Easter.... Blessings on everyone in York . I'm with you in spirit.
Thanks for posting this video. I love that church and this music, so this is quite the treat! I also knew David, who was the organist at the York cathedral for some years, back when he was in Redding, California, and greatly admired his musical skills.
i have always enjoyed anglican chant, even though in Rwanda they dont employ these traditional musics i am doing my best to encourage my brothers and sisters in the my choir to try and the whole parish have enjoyed the beauty of our anglican heritage pray for us that GOD will still be with us
Protestants beleive in god the catholics beleive in magic today i choose god just like the protestants im educating myself on the protestant religion from today onwards
I understand what you are saying. I've been both, RC and Protestant but the ill-feeling of one group toward the other is the direct reverse of what Jesus told us to be. There will always be faults on both sides because we're all human and are all full of flaws. If we all just look to Jesus and not judge, as He commanded us, we'd be truly spreading His light to the world. I have decided long ago to be a "non-denominational" Christian - Jesus is enough. God bless, Lolly x
This same psalm tone is used in the 1941 Lutheran Hymnal as a setting to the Te Deum Laudamus in the Matins service. That setting alternates in the inner verses to a very pretty minor key version. The same setting has been moved to the currently used "Lutheran Service Book." A very pretty psalm tone.
I cant find a score for that Psalm, i even cant find a "Name"...i want to arrange it for my French Horn Ensemble, maybe you can help me to find a score somewhere ? Greetings from Austria
FloJ71 It's by Henry Lawes, at psalm 148 in the 1932 Parish Psalter. A superb chant, one of the finest and grandest of all. The Parish Psalter shows Its name as "Laudate Dominum". Not hard to guess that it was the inspiration for Hubert Parry's tune of the same name used for the hymn "O Praise ye the Lord".
@lexscar1 How i envy you. Lived in York as a kid then was brought to Oz. Would just love to visit the Minster especially around Easter. It's a pipedream! Cheers, lolly
Every two years or so since 1991 we go to England ..and in our usually 3 day stays in York,on each of those trips,we would enter this church,1 or two times a day...As we usually do in all the towns we visit on our month long trips.. .A few years ago we were faced with a newly implemented large entrance fee.....even at evensong, what a shame to not be able to afford this part of Christianity...
listen to this beautiful music - it is VERY different from anything I have ever listened to in a catholic mass. Very Different. So too our the physical characteristics building wise. Usually not so focused on Mary or the crucifix.
Some people not up to date with English History - this is a Protestant Cathedral (Church of England) with a predominantly Protestant congregation, though some Roman Catholics are known to attend C of E AND also take Communion (all are invited)! This welcome is not returned by the Roman Catholic churches. Before anyone blunders on about the original true Roman faith blah, blah! Remember, the Celtic priests were spreading the word of Christ in Britain and Ireland a couple of centuries BEFORE Augustine finally arrived in Kent. If the Roman Church had had Vatican II four hundred years earlier there might not have been the schism that was the Reformation. The Eastern church managed to preach in the relevant native languages (rather than Latin) from the off.
Sounds like it is you who is not up to date. A Minster pre-dates the Reformation and reflects it's original use as a base for missionaries. Cathedrals are the home church of a Bishop. Since the Reformation, some Minsters like York (and unlike Beverley Minster) became the home church/seat of a Bishop but because of it's original name the tile of Minister was kept. So...this particular building is still called called York Minster for a reason. One which apparently you are unaware of. All of this information is in the guide available at York Minster.
Actually it's not! Unless "English History" has changed since I visited two years ago - at which point it was the "seat" of an Archbishop in the Anglican Church.. attended mostly by Anglicans!
The church of England is not technically considered a protestant religion in the current use of the word. In fact, most protestant religions came from those 'protesting' the catholic rites and ceremonies of the CofE.
Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee. O heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come, and abide in us and cleanse us from every stain and save our souls, O Good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
From the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. Amen.
Sometimes in the history the Roman did not even considered non-Roman as Christians. As an Anglican I really do not mind if Roman Catholic do not consider Anglican Church as a catholic church; yet I still believe my church is a catholic church instead of a Protestant church.
@hsebuliba ,Ironically the Archbishop of York is Jon Sentanu from Kampala Arriving in England in the early 70s and has since been Bishop of Birmingham, before taking his present position.I can confirm his happiness and the good work he is doing...May God bless you and all in Uganda.....Peter
fowlerbckuk I've not heard the choir of St John's, Elora, but shall look on line for their work. The pointing would be fairly easy to reproduce, though less so the 'cathedral choir English accent...:)
@delboy0903 I am glad we can finally agree. I am proud to be Anglican too, and we don't recognise the authority of the Pope. It's important to differentiate though between Roman Catholic and catholic, and sadly the latter has been hijacked by the Roman Church. It's interesting that in terms of worship style the Church of England is generally much "higher" than the Church of Ireland, so we do actually have quite a lot of pomp - including vestments, incense and statutes etc. Good wishes to you.
@Taiginator Well sir, I am a member of the Church of England living on the Continent......and I am certainly not catholic....I am a Protestant and will remain one
Lastly, one would be hard-pressed to find a better example of pride than Archbishop Cramner - who thought that the 1500-year old Church had gotten it wrong and that he had gotten it right. One cannot judge his intentions, but only his effects, which were lamentable, and led to the brutal persecution of the Catholic Church in England, and more so in Ireland.
this protestant cathedral was built by catholics and the music derives from the great polyphonic music of the catholic church - it is all a continuity - growing one from the other
The Reformation in England was singular in that it refused to state whether it was Protestant or Catholic although elements of both were obvious for all to see.
Being my self from Canada - can say that the Anglican Church of Canada is in many ways VERY Different from the catholic church.. thank goodness too! How sleepy, dry and their services can be.

i am Catholic. The Anglicans could teach us something about Liturgical Music. And there are a couple of things they could learn from us.
Happy and contented with my Anglican faith. God bless us all

This is just heavenly! Perfect.
To my 85 million Anglican brothers and sisters out in the world, Peace of the Lord!❤
This is true anglican chant, soul lifting and inspirational. A sincere worship to GOD.
I wish to get more of this
The Psalms have withstood the test of time and continue to be beautiful .
This is the same tune that LCMS Lutherans use to sing the Te Deum. I love it!
Just the way to sing these Psalms. Very nice to listen too.

Beautifully sung by this great choir.
This is magnificient, it is the best I have ever heard keep up the spirit. Hannington Sebuliba- Kampala Uganda
Just how Psalms should be sung. A real pleasure to listen and to be moved by the words.
I love this. Born into an Anglican family and to an Anglican priest.
