A UA-cam Short video led me to this documentary..what a great story, i dont know how/why id never heard of it before...anyways,I feel so so sad for what happened to Gerald, even after the dog thing, he still didn't deserve such a brutal punishment...his life practically ended that day...And what a blessing Lisa is...she reminds me of my older sister Tina who took care of our brother who had cancer for 12 years until his last breath, without any complains..almost cost her her marriage... Sisters are such blessings.

I won the Western counties Northern division ABA middleweight title that night. I watched this fight in the bar afterwards with my hands still wrapped. I was so caught up in the fight and the excitement that I didn’t think anything was wrong until Gerald sat in the corner before that fateful round.
I was never really the same fighter afterwards.
I flirted with the pro ranks for a couple of bouts, but I can safely say that this fight that I was never even involved with was the start of the end of my “career” before it had really got off the ground.
It changed me and changed boxing for me.
I still love the sport. I still hate the sport.

That's a really interesting perspective to hear from, not one that I think many of us would or maybe even could consider, not being fighters ourselves. I think I can understand though how witnessing this, even from a distance, took something out of you. Of the two, what would you say is a fighter's worst fear, being seriously hurt or seriously hurting someone else?

    • @Greebox-
      @Greebox- 2 роки тому +26

@@Vortigan07 I obviously can't speak for other people, but all the fighters I've known and worked with would probably be split, just basing it on their personality types.
I personally would have feared it happening to me more, just because of the burden on my loved ones. I would fear them suffering afterwards more than my opponent's, as harsh and seflish as that sounds.

i love boxing, but my old man always said he hated it and that to him it wasn't a sport bc it's the only "sport" where the goal, THE objective is to hurt your opponent. My dad did manage to use sports to teach me a lot of life's most important lessons. Like being a gracious loser AND gracious winner. Teamwork and respect. Always treat your opponent with respect, even if he doesn't.
Once i was fully a man with career mortgage and family, we better understood what boxing and football does to your brain long term. I realized he was right. I'm kinda a libertarian and I think consenting adults can do what they want. But i don't think these men really understand what will probably happen. Even best case scenario.
And then there are fights like this. And i've seen 100 clips of MMA fights where one fighter is totally knocked out, and the other fighter pounces and almost needs to be physically held back by the ref before they stop landing blows on a rag doll. I know what it's like when your blood is up. It's hard to stop. And youre trained not to stop in the off chance it wasn't a finishing blow. But there are so many where it's clear to anyone that the dude is OUT.
There are also countless vids where one fighter ends the match and immediately stops and immediately has a look like that of concern and interest in the well-being of his colleague. I've seen clips where the fighter knows it's done and the ref is slow witted or stoned or something and the fighter is just like come on, i don't wanna kill this person

@doun2others922 'Her guy had destroyed his own share of damage to others' loved ones over the years' Tell me where that says he blinded or maimed for life. I'll wait-
And it was never his intention to blind him or to damage him like that.
The point is that it could've also been the other way around. Stuff like that happens. You can't blame the opponent. Blame the others who were involved and didn't stop the fight.
And he himself could've stopped earlier when he noticed something was wrong. But he was too stubborn to quit. That's not his opponent's fault.
And he also damaged other people. It could've also happened that he damages others severely.
Plus he decided he wanted to go into that fight. Even though he was already damaged after the fight with Jackson. The blinking and headache started after the fight with Jackson. But he ignored the signs and still went into that fight. That's not his opponent's fault. It's his own fault and his trainer's fault.
And if we're being honest: It's more reprehensible that he taped another dog's mouth and let his own dog kill that dog. Like wtf?! That's just sick! It's easier to judge those actions and that behavior than judging his opponent for fighting him.

The wheels had been set in motion of a more serious issue beginning to develop; the Benn fight was just the straw that broke the camel's back...

    • @jollyquinn430
      @jollyquinn430 Рік тому +1

@jazzjames I see it a bit differently than you. But I respect your opinion.
I don't think there is anyone to blame 100%. But there are some partly to blame.
Quite a lot mistakes happened that could've been avoided. And that could've led to a very different outcome.
      1. Why did they hire a referree who doesn't eben speak English? They're in the UK. It can't be that hard to get a referree who speaks English.
      2. The referree couldn't even count properly. He said "I have my own counting technique". But that's not how it works. There are rules. And those rules have to be followed.
You can't just bend the rules and bring in your own counting technique which obviously doesn't follow the rules.
      3. This is a big one. The fact that the trainer let him even start the fight. Trainers have a big responsibility. They are the ones who have to stop their boxers from fighting if the boxer isn't really fit to fight. And it is very questionable that he let him fight. He should've forbid him to fight after the fight against Jackson. Jackson has some heavy punches. And the blinking and headache started after the fight with Jackson. Those were alarm signals. And the trainer ignored them. He should've prioritized his boxers health and safety.
So in my opinion the trainer is partially to blame because he let him fight and ignored some alarming hints that something was wrong.
After I learned all the facts (not just the ones from this video), I became quite sceptical about the trainer.
      4. The trainer didn't stop the fight when the alarm signals became even more severe during the fight.
I feel like he didn't do his job as a trainer very well during the fight. He didn't take his responsibility serious enough. Especially after the mouth piece started falling out of his mouth.
      5. Same goes for the referree.
      6. Gerald himself should've listened to his body. He was too stubborn to say 'I won't fight' and also too stubborn to say 'I quit this fight'. He should've been more careful. Especially after the fight against Jackson.
A lot of people blame Nigel. But I think he's one of the few who isn't to blame at all. It wasn't his intention to harm him like that. It was bad luck that he was the one in that situation. The places could've been swapped. And it's not his job to take care of his opponent's health and to stop a fight. That's the job of the trainer, the refferree and Gerald himself.
So yeah, quite a lot concerning mistakes happened. And yes, I do think that some of the involved people are partly to blame.
Tbh it makes me quite mad that everyone blames someone else. And that nobody is a real man and stands up and says:"Yes, I made some mistakes. Yes, I'm partly to blame for what happened." But nobody takes the responsibility. All of them just blames the others. Nobody has the balls to admit that he did something wrong. That's sad and also frustrating.
They're grown ass men. They're the ones who scream the loudest when it's about taking the praise. But suddenly they're all quiet when it comes to taking responsibility and blame.

I know nothing about boxing and watched this off a recommendation from another UA-cam comment. This was an excellent documentary, very sad. I could have watched the whole thing if it was 5 hours.

This should give a lot of young boys and men / girls and women reason to ALWAYS respect your opponent in the ring as it's life changing.
I ALWAYS respect my opponent no matter who it is, you don't play boxing or fighting, it's serious and you treat it as such.

Gerald was not a good person. Not saying he got what he deserved, but his sister made it seems like she forgot who her brother really was. If he did that with the dogs, he's not a sane person.

its terrible to see a man like this however having read the life and the things he has done this is karma simple as that he once bought a Labrador dog simply for his dog to kill it thats a evil and ruthless man if he had done this to benn he wouldnt have cared

Is the best said statement in question for indicating that he was not going to be respected from the very beginning.

$750,000 divided by 16 years and counting comes to $46,875 and change - Gerald's saintly sisters would quite rightly need that as carer's wages - that in 2 again is under 24k. Carers in UK get more than that. Not to mention expenses on upkeep of the house, heating, gas etc - Believe me that didn't even touch the sides. I think Gerald's sisters and carers have a good place upstairs, such grace, such forgiveness, kindness, they're good people, Lisa and Sandra God Speed x

Yup extensive care taking is so difficult already with family. You never feel like you have a day off & when you do you still wanna go back & check up on em. Here in the states between cost of care & pay you receive it's almost like choosing to live in poverty. I know it all too well as a care taker for family member too and you really gotta have a good handle on frustration & anger because it'll chew you up & you'll slack on caring for loved one. I def won't be talking shit about those sisters taking care of him, it's so much to take on.
