I got to see Roberto Duran fight in Panama in 1997 when I was stationed there in the military. About 2 weeks later I saw him playing dominos and drinking beer and having a good time at the beach. To see somebody so legendary being so normal in life was something else. I'll never forget it.

Always be a Ray Leonard fan, but to me Durans win over Leonard is far more impressive than Leonards win over Duran. After all Duran beat Leonard at his best, a focused prepared in shape prime Leonard. While Leonard beat a weight drained, dehydrated and weakened Duran.

@@RodrigoMartinez-mu9ue It was close fight. But the decision was clear, 8-7 is a bit generous to Ray. On the inside, Duran was extremely good at smothering punches which may look like they might have landed.
In any case, Leonard is atleast 2 weight classes bigger than him naturally. Duran shouldn't have given him a close fight, let alone won if we stick by boxing's premier sayi g that a good big man beats a great smaller man.

I was at the Duran-Moore fight at MSG in Jun '83 with my dad's best friend Pete Quinn. We had great seats that cost $100 ea. My dad was so mad I bought them he refused to go. ( I was in 11th grade bought the tickets w/$ earned at King Kullen ). Greatest night of my early life. All these famous people were no closer to the fight than we were, Frank Sinatra, Vicky LaMotta, David Brenner, Donald & Bruce Curry, Vito Antuofermo...Ali walked right past us...saw Gerry Cooney on the LIRR going back home. The whole crowd seemed to be for Duran. I remember Billy Hatcher on the undercard and Panama Lewis getting banned for taking padding out of his guy's glove...but all the details escape me. Those really WERE the good old days.

Boxing has an element to it that no other sport has - it has the people behind you. When Duran stepped into the ring you thought about the streets of Panama, when JCC fought he had the weight of his country on his shoulders. When Tom Brady gets inside the lines, do we think about Northern California (where he is from)? No, we think about the "franchise", we think about the organization. Boxing is about the people at the most basic level. Hopefully one day it regains its foothold in the world of sports, because I really miss it.

Did you say he paid for the pool''? on his own table? Hmmmmm!!! Only kidding but it must've been a pleasure sitting in a BMW with he driving you around. An absolute legend in and out the ring.Probably had the biggest fan-base world wide than any fighter that ive heard about.I have him as the 2nd best fighter after the person who beat him in MMHagler.Hagler was too big for Roberto as he had to put on 28 Lbs to fight him as a middleweight. But he was the only fighter to take Hagler the distance.+He had to put on a stone '14 Lbs' to fight a 'in his prime SRLeonard and beat him.............+He 1st won the title from a Scotsman (my country) by punching him between the legs....And Guess who i met going down to Newcastle on the train 'Ken Buchanan' I asked Ken who was the best boxer ever? i was surprised by his reply in Ali or Sugar Ray Robinson...................................& Duran when asked who his toughest opponent was his reply was Buchanan!!!

No real man accepts a victory when after the 13th round bell he pulverized Buchanan's balls. KB was a 15 rounder and had legs in the 13th. No real man does such an act and refuses a rematch. No real man finally admits to Buchanan 20 years later with buckets of tears- yeah he hurt him bad. A real man tells the world/ His face is so crazed after the nasty he is a crazed animal- aka stimulant imo. The next day they all saw the blow that required surgery but the ref would not change his opinion
It was all decided it was time to get rid of the hall of fame ken buchanan, who was never knocked out in his career
and replace with a Panamanian- yes- racism because of $$, I think the best thing would have been since fight one if Duran would have been tested for steroids and stimulants. In the KB fight he screamed at the champion when he wouldn't drop. After the cheatin blow KB would have been in Duran's quarter making certain he was ok- not duran- he had a predator's look of pleasure. If I get the money- get the tapes and hire 3 top stimulant doctors and see what they say.

Roberto has nobody to blame but himself for "No mas." Quitter? Well he did quit. Period. But I subscribe to Randy Gordon's interpretation of that night more than any other theory.
However "No Mas" should not define what he was in the sport of boxing. His rise back to the top in defeating Barkley showed the world the desire, pride and fury that lay beneath the exterior of Robert. Of course as if his performance in Montreal hadn't done that. Roberto is the only man to defeat a prime and physically peak SRL. The only man who was able to dent the aura of confidence that surrounded Sugar at the time. Duran beat him mentally before the fight and beat him in the ring. No other fighter did that to SRL.
The sport misses Roberto. We do.
