Metallica: James' New Guitar from the "Garage Days"
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 кві 2018
- In honor of the re-release of “The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited” we thought you'd enjoy story about another garage - the Carlson Garage where “Ride the Lightning” & “Master of Puppets” were written. You see, James used some of the wood from the old Carlson Garage to build himself a new guitar. Hear him tell the story of how “Carl” came to be…

Using the wood from the garage where Master of Puppets was created, the story of meeting and joining cliff, his death, Cliff watching over them as Orion, and the 3 1 3 2 fret inlays indicating the address of the garage is just ingenious and extremely special. What an amazing work of art.
Alan Grey Absolutely beautiful, amazing amazing.......
More so than that. If you notice the grave stones on frets 6 to 8. Going in reverse, that would be 86, which is the year Master of Puppets was released, as well as symbolic of the album cover.. as well as symbolic of when Cliff passed away.
NO SHIT EH ? SIMPLY A BEAUTIFUL STORY . THE CREATOR IS RATHER A GENIUS . WHAT FRIGGIN' TALENT !
That thing will probably sell for millions in a few of decades
yep, thats what he does. makes art
In the future when Metallica ain’t around anymore, that guitar has to be one of the most expensive and most insane guitars in metal history period
metallica is so famous that i think they would continue the band with new members haha
@@bardiabahrampour4166 they wouldnt
@@bardiabahrampour4166 Excluding the gig for playing bass, the lineup has been the exact same for 39 years. The only guy who could at this point exit the band and be replaced is Rob. Nothing against Rob, he's a great bassist, but if someone like James calls quits, it's over for good.
Ultoch, Kirk could be replaced by Dave. I'd bet Dave would say yes without hesitation.
Steve Smith lmfao what? are you high ? 39 years later hey guys I know you kicked me out and I started a revenge band but yeah I’ll join now in 2020 no problem. Cmon dawg

That's pretty damn awesome dude. What did they knock the garage down or something?
no you haven't
I stayed out in El Cerrito last year. Can’t believe it was a block away from where I stayed 😭😭😭

CORAL!!
Usualy guitars have females name, even if english is not my natural language and I'm far from being good in listening english unfortunately, I would probably say it's Carole too :)
The old saying "If these walls could talk", now they can sing.
the walls can probably sing better than James can to be honest... lol
Shallex no, i think he means that he HATES james singing
now they can shred

You sir, are a poet.
The part where James was explaining when they all pass away they meet back in the garage with cliff hit me right in the feels. Fuuuuuuuk
Metal Maniac ga rage
I know, hit it home, and someone took the time to put work into this masterpiece and was very careful about the details and the story behind this details. Even the smallest details have a big story to tell. Wish that bus never... you know.
Metal Maniac in the feels! What are you a twelve y/o girl 👧
That’s not metal brah
But not with Jason
Didnt expect to have a so deep meaning about the inlays. They really think about him still. It still haunts them. They cannot forget...
Cliff Burton was the lead man ,like James is now .Cliff wrote Master of Puppets .
Cameron Grant Absolutely. The quality of songs that were written with Cliff has been unsurpassed in my opinion.
Would have been nice if they zoomed in and actually showed us thou
Didn't he die like actually directly in front of them all screaming ripped in half from being crushed by the bus? That would haunt me pretty bad too.
@@thinkinyblinko6666 Nah, he never actually woke up. But James still saw him lying underneath the bus, plus the fact that when they tried to lift the bus the cable snapped and it got dropped on him again.
The garage should have been listed as a historic buildings.
Lucha Lew if it was here today it would have
He should do a series where he goes in depth about all of the guitars he's used in the past!
Who else agrees?
Isaac White guitar of the week stories...yeah
Id love that. Weekly stories behind all his guitars
That would actually be so awesome.
Fantastic idea! Would love this for Kirk and Robert as well.
We need the Green Flame JH1 to make at least some sort of appearance again. XD
Not only is the guitar aesthetically beautiful (and absolutely badass-looking), the story behind it is SO meaningful. He is literally using an instrument where historical albums have been conceived. And the Cliff Burton tributes? I am sure Cliff is proud of what they have become.
Maybe not so much St Anger or Death Magnetic, but they're more or less back on track now, and Cliff Would have been cool with that.
Syklone Trust me Cliff would have been proud of them,
@@Syklonus Cliff was a musician/artist first, metalhead second. Metal wasn't even his favorite music. He loved classical and classic rock. He would have been 100% on board with their 90s sound, and even if he didn't love the production of St. Anger, he would have supported them branching out and experimenting. Metallica has never really gotten "off track". St. Anger should have sounded better, but they've never put out a bad (proper) Metallica album.
@@Retrorevelations don't be too much of a fanboy. St. Anger was garbage and the title track was the only thing worthwhile.
@@Syklonus The Death Magnetic disrespect is insane.
wish he had the light switch from the garage for the pickup switch lol
THAT would be awesome!
Great fucking idea!!!
That’s would be cool....😁👍
It was probably a string you pulled instead of a switch if I had to guess
i honestly think that wouldnt work that perfectly but great idea anyway
Damn, I'd love to talk to James about anything really. He seems such a nice guy.
I would love to meet up in person when these days shake his hand and say man you're my hero thank you for performing old is badass Music Man
Jason and some others may Disagree.
@@ThunderPantz01 that was the first year he was in the band
@@TomDavo-gj8ww Yes, What does that have to do with whether Jason Feels James is a nice guy or not exactly?
Dave D Jason left for echobrain. That never made since to me. Trujillo fits with the band better.
What a historical masterpiece.
Cohen Russell I Agree🤘🤘🤘
When he said "and this is Cliff portrayed as Orion" I almost broke in tears.
Yeah, that's a very cool guitar and a touching story it tells!
I did too. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Cliff is part of the Orion watching over us"
You gone soft man
Whoever edited the video give that man a raise for as soon as James starts talking about Cliff Orion starts playing
Last January, I saw James play this guitar in Master of Puppets. It was my first Metallica show
I could listen to James talk about gear for hours
His passion for it really draws a person in.
Anything really, not just gear
I hope he talks about the amplifiers and effects too
Top Gear, Guilty Gear.
Me too
That is not just a guitar, that is piece of art and history of Metallica in a one instrument.
I about started to tear up when James started to explain the meaning of the guitar, such a beautiful work of art man
I love the shit-disturbing energy of Seattle 89, and sets from that time - those are my favorite performances. But that said, I couldn't be happier with how James has matured. Out of all the future James' that were possible coming out of the 80s, I think we ended up with the best case scenario. What a guy! What a band! \m/ \m/
James is a true metal role model and a warrior.
I think there wasn't any other option for James to come out of the 80s/90s. It's how he came, or death.
Couldn't agree more but his road hasn't been smooth, many turns and twists but like this a Man was created.
Really neat way to incorporate Cliff into a beautifully made guitar. He'll never be left behind by any of the guys
I just love those guitar stories... so getting one from the man himself is just amazing !
I was wondering what makes it so special. Only the storie does for sure, but what makes it incredible is the man himself tells it!
"if you give an artist too much direction, then it's not their art"
Yeah, thanks Bob Rock.
@@mikefrank6319 Bob Rock saved that band. St Anger is in most people’s opinion, the swan song of Metallica.
The garage seems more like a state of mind
MORE videos like this, please!! One-on-one with James, just talking about whatever the fuck he wants. Really enjoyed this incredible piece of art too!
Go through those guitars on the shelf, tell stories, ^ this.
You should check out his interview with Joe Rogan, over 2 hours long.
Duke Minister SO MUCH THIS.... HE TALKS ABOUT BEES!!! BEEEEES!! The god of metal, talks about bees for 1.5 hours and 3 minx of tallica lol
I'd just love to see and hear stories about those guitars on the shelf. See a few growing up in mags, a couple videos, but there's an impressive collection that speaks for itself there. Having the band stories to go along with that like this video did would be great content.
I watched a bunch a bee talk too lol.
That guitar looks so good
It looks awesome, too bad we didn't get a closer view.
It's kind of funny, but take away the back story and imagine if someone came to you with this guitar for sale, you'd take one look at it and say WTF? It looks like a pile of garbage, is this a joke?
La Barone not at all. It's freaking beautiful man. I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.
Sure good , that's ESP...!!!!
He's such a happy man these days
Great frontman and song writer
they never overcame Clif's death. more obviously James.
I will never look at the constellation Orion the same again.
TRUE, after he mention Cliff I'll always have background music when looking at Orion
Legendary garage...
legendary gayrage
That’s a good flex...owning the coolest garage in history
How could a few kids in a non-descript garage write some of the most iconic music that is still stunning people 2 generations later? I know this has happened more than once but it's still quite a rare occurrence that it blows my mind 30 years after first hearing Metallica.
Lightening in a bottle
Ask The Beatles
cause alot of kids was competing against each other in a era where being in a band was a legit decent shot in life, and the talented found other talented folk easy enough and worked hard for it
now? kids aint pushed to play, the music industry has changed, its no longer the same.
Missing the good old EET FUK
Orel Arokidas true art
Just what I thought 😂
Or MORE BEER
Would have been dope if he had it carved or burned in.
he use them in studio work
So cool. Definitely keep these gear style videos coming!! Let’s hear the story behind that purple-flamed Snakebyte!
Jade Sutherland I want to hear the story behind all of his guitars
I wanna see an original 58 Korina Explorer (and 59 if James still owns it... He shared a picture of it on IG 5 years ago).
Its probably just something the ESP custom shop sent him.
He uses that one live if I'm not mistaken. I have witnessed it live
The story is that it was finally his turn to have a purple instrument since everyone else in the band has one. The finish on it seems to be ESP's standard "reindeer blue."
SwirkH
I remember that! Did James ever return to social media?
I love that he actually uses the guitar and doesent just put it in a frame. A work of art needs to be shown.
Cliff would be so proud not just of the guitar, but that you all never gave up after his passing. The inlays with the story and that timeline are priceless.
That guitar has amazing details.
Hey🌹, how are you doing today?
So Cliff ascended to the stars and replaced the constellation Orion... That's awesome!

Very soulful and meaningful is he
This is insane. I love when he says "you love an artist for what they do, don't give them too much direction". This applies to business too. Tell a partner what you want accomplished, and let them get to their goal how they see fit.
James can make wearing a hat seem the coolest thing ever.

@@Freedomfighter205 yeah did a movie during this interview about a famous serial killer. Not sure who. He plays the sheriff
This guitar has such a deep meaning behind it, I love it.
That is so cool, Cliff is Orion. His passing and still watching over Metallica in the sky as the constellation Orion.
I love his voice, I love the way he plays and holds his guitar and I even love his name: James. I love his looks, especially his smile that dries up all the rain. He's humble and funny, doesn't think he should be worshiped because of his money.
He calls the road his home, in "Wherever I May Roam." He says anyone can do what he has done, he says he and his band are just basically having fun. Going around the world and town to town, laying the best of Heavy Metal down.
I can't help that when I hear his voice I get chilled to the core, just one song makes me crave even more. Then I'm on a listening spree that lasts all day long, Nothing Else Matters, just his songs. So play on my Heavy Metal King, let the band play and your voice sing.

""going in the garage and being there forever...in our minds..." had some tears well-up at that bit. heavy story, indeed.
The way James justified his preference for mahogany without once mentioning tone was actually quite impressive.
The tonewoods like Mahogony(TM),Birch,Pine,Maple,Ash and the others have never made sense to me, I wished he had said something about tone that could shine some light on why mahogany is banned in everywhere.
I think the Spanish oak tone aka "rock preset" on has a low mid .wood, do you think we will find a tone ever again like this?
He sounded so weird on my Dali speakers with faux-wood called MDF, cuts into the electrons really bad sometimes, making them emit a photon due to being cut short.
ive seen this vid maybre a hundreads of times but everytime he tells the story and explains the signs on the neck just amazes me over and over again
4:39. All guitars need that magnetic cover.
That is actually so cool, his guitar is built from the wood that hold the Soundwaves of Lightning And Puppets!!
As a woodworker / woodturning and a Metallica fan this story is so incredibly awesome! Very true. It's really pleasant to see celebrities who don't take themselves too seriously. James is a great guy and he's definitely one of my biggest inspirations.
Hw wasn't always like that. He was shy when young, big ego during the Black album and humbled when he quit drugs and booze. I love James but he doesn't interact with the fans a lot. I met him and Lars and lars is a cool cat. Don't know why he gets so much flack
@@Badass1974 because, Lars was front and center destroying file sharing. I bought all their music on cassette tapes, then bought it all AGAIN on CD. You're telling me I'm STEALING from you, because I download the same music from somebody that already has the MP3's made? I can take the time to make them myself. Is that stealing, also, Lars? File sharing was helping some artists get their name out there and gain a larger fan base. That's why people say "fuck Lars".
