Sony a7s III is a video camera. It's good for capturing motions (cinematography) with no limit of recording time and having some limitations for taking still pictures. Some mirrorless cameras are photo cameras. They're good for taking still pictures (photography) and having some limitations for capturing motions. I hope Sony will make a7s IV that can capture lightnings in slow motions at 50,000 fps.
They did many things right with that camera. Can’t wait for the a7 IV which will be the perfect allrounder for most people. If they take most improvements of the a7 S III plus a new 24-36 MP sensor ... they have a new bestseller.
Nice summary. Wanted more on 1) Audio: many mention the XLR K3M, only a few, like you, have mentioned 4 lines of audio into the camera. No-one has demonstrated that. 2) Auto Exposure. People who want a flip out screen will want auto-exposure as they move around talking. Everyone is all jacked about auto-focus, but no one talks about auto-iris or ISO.

Low -light AF is excellent if the best settings are chosen. The best results start with using a wide-aperture prime lens (f/1.8 or lower) as opposed to an f/4 zoom lens. When capturing images in continuous autofocus (AF-C) mode, the camera will focus at the selected aperture. In the AF-S mode, most SONY lenses (with a few exceptions: Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens, Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens) will open up momentarily to help the AF system "lock-on" to the subject. Shoot wide-open in AF-C. If stopping down to a smaller aperture like f5.6 or f/8, choose AF-S. Turning off Live View Display can also minimize any AF lag, so turn the effect off from the MENU. Remember to turn it back on when done with your low light shooting >Mark
Sony ought to put this low light system in a pro-sumer video "filming" camera body so we don't have to deal with overheating (only an hour with 4k??) and they can add SDI BNC outputs as well for recorders that can capture 16 bit RAW with timecode externally. Plus, the fact there would be ready accessible buttons. Like a Sony PXW-FS6 with low light capabilities with no rolling shutter artifacts, perhaps?
Give me a second to pick my jaw up off my keyboard and wipe up all the drool. It's been such a long awaited debut, but obviously totally worth the wait. Thanks B&H for a great review. And Bravo Sony, since my switch from Nikon in the mid 2010's I have not been disappointed or let down by Sony. This one will be no exception.
Looking forward to getting this =D Here's my concern though. I get it, and the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens, take it camping to make a youtube video for my channel, and it craps the bed at low light/no light filming. As in I cant get autofocus to find my face, or focus on the ground around me, or trees without a filming light, and when I do get it to autofocus the sound of it focusing bleeds through into the recorded audio.

Low-light performance would depend on the lens you are using (and your chosen aperture) as well as the ISO you are using based on the ambient light levels. That being said, the Sony Alpha a7S III has pretty much the best and cleanest image quality out of all the cameras in Sony's current lineup when shooting in low-lighting, and would highly be recommended if you need 60 frames per second in low-lighting.

Hi, thanks so much for this very positive and helpful review. So, a BIG question for me is simply the stability when walking, panning, turning, etc. when shooting video. I would love a comment from the reviewer how this camera compares to the Olympus or especially the Panasonic cameras that have remarkable image stability in video. I have the Sony A6---cameras, now the A6600. Stability is unfortunately so poor that IBIS is really only good enough for still photos. Any sort of video while moving needs a gimbal. Again, please share how stable the camera is when shooting videos. Thanks so much!!!
We're glad that you enjoyed the review! Based on the testing we have done, the stabilization in the A7S III is excellent. We recently made a comparison between it and several other cameras, but unfortunately Olympus was not one of the brands that made on the list. bhpho.to/333Pyj2
