Not fake. I met him two years ago. While signing an autograph for me I told him how much his music has meant to me and he was genuinely appreciative and gave me a big hug.
That part in PJ20 when the arena sings Betterman and Ed looks overwhelmed with happiness made me cry multiple times... Now I've seen this it's guaranteed to make me cry even more.
and of course u genius had clue about everything...another dumb comment...just because there's the same comment under every other video from the beginnings...
Incredible! Considering this came off of a VHS recording you can take a lot from what we do hear. The voice is there but there is a distinct difference between Bad Radio and Pearl Jam. Yet We all love when Pearl Jam plays this live but BR did a good job with this. To bad they weren't as serious as Eddie and where happy playing in San Diego in front of mostly no one. So stoked this song came to life again a few years later!!!
I read an interview with Brendan O’Brien talking about hearing Eddie play Better Man in the studio for the first time and telling him that the song is going to be a huge hit. Apparently, Eddie didn’t like hearing that and didn’t want to record the song. As I recall, this incident with Brendan happened when PJ was recording Vitalogy so perhaps Eddie hadn’t shared the song with the band until then. I heard Stone say after hearing BM for the first time that he wondered what other song gems Eddie had hidden away, which suggests that BM was not something Eddie introduced to the band right away.
What an unreal find. I knew he wrote the song when he was 13 or 14, but didn't know this footage existed. From this to closing out Letterman's final week on the air...the full evolution of a song!
I love how this stuff shows up from back in the day!!!! I was in high school then. Can't wait to go to Alpine Valley for 20 year anniversary in September!
Eddie's actually a big REM fan, and he was the one who inducted REM into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, saying that he had listened to "Murmur" over and over as a teenager.
Imagine seeing this live. Then having a gremlin in your head 6 years later when it was on the radio like you heard something before. Or one of the band members who practiced and played it a lot first but wont see any of the money lol
TODAY IS DECEMBER 23, 2024 HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY EDDIE VEDDER!! LONG LIVE MY FAVORITE FRONTMAN! I HAVE YOUR NAME TATTOOED ON MY WRIST. KEEP ON ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD EVERYONE!! IT'S EVOLUTION BABYYYY!! 😊💓🔥🤘✌️
I interviewed Eddie a few months after Ten was released--I was the FIRST radio programmer to play PJ anywhere in the world. It'd been less than a year since he was in this band, so I asked, "Do you still keep In touch with the guys in Bad Radio?" His reply? "..yeah...I got a fan letter from one of them recently..." OMFG. I ALMOST PUKED RIGHT ON HIM.
Eddie VEDDER seems douchey???? That's literally the last person I could fathom someone saying that about. Mister boycott tickemaster so his fans could see him, like I did, in NYC in 97 for $20??? The man who cried onstage after bringing up the Rosklide tragedy 10 years later, who invited a sign language interpreter onstage with him and danced with her after Given To Fly, and who defends poor people, women, abused kids, etc etc?? He's softspoken and emotional, he's not self absorbed at all. Dude used to ride his bike to concerts. He's one of the richest men in rock music, his house, although nice, isn't some crazy mansion. He defended West Memphis 3 to the point of showing up to a pre trial rally for them and letting Damien Echols write some of the lyrics to Army Reserve. Are we talking about the same person?
This is fucking awesome! He wrote this in high school. My god, I could barely think clearly enough to tie my shoes in HS. What a talent. I wonder why the other guys in the band didn't get down on their knees to stay with Eddie musically. Perhaps he had to leave this band for better talented bandmates? No offenses, just hard to understand how you could see talent in front of you and not stick to him like glue as a band.
Eddie said in the PJ20 book that the band didn't take the gigs seriously and that was so frustrating to him. So obviously when he had a chance to be in a better band he left.
THAT IS AMAZING!!! I'm surprised Bad Radio didnt get big with Betterman! His voice is awesome in that track! It is a bit strange with it slighty more up beat at the intro... but thats cool!
John C doubt it. In 1989 Eddie would have been 25 years old making him a bit old for a high school battle of the bands. This was likely from a battle of the bands at Tower Records, where they won, and used the money to record a demo.
They recorded it for Vs. But their producer made the mistake of saying it would be a huge hit and Eddie immediately dropped it from that album’s lineup. They didn’t want any more smash hits for awhile since they were still reeling from the popularity of 10. I remember Stone saying in an interview that he wondered how many other great songs Eddie had hidden away in his notebooks and Ed just kinda smiled and looked away. There are probably a lot.
There was a guy out here on UA-cam, called "grungeera", he had alot of Bad Radio demos put up, then he closed his account, but I know he sent the demos to some of you guys, if you have them, Please send me a Privat Message!!!
Haha...I bet he never thought he would become one of the best singers in one of the worlds best bands...porches was another song he wrote while in bad radio.
+josh white Eddie labeled that as a "pop song", and it wasn't until Vitalogy that Ed started playing guitar and got involved into music writing with Jeff and Stone :)
+josh white The music on TEN (excepting "Release") was already composed by Gossard and/or Ament; Vedder just put words to it. And I don't think "Better Man" would have fit the tone of either of the first two albums. The song was actually recorded for the Vs. sessions but was rejected from being included on that record because it sounded too much like a pop song.
@alfr9999 Actually, this is supposed to be one of the first songs Eddie wrote as a young child. If I was told correctly, he wrote the song while listening to "Save it for Later" (which is tied as my favorite songs of all time!).
how did this song not blow this band into a huge success??
I think this song was way before its time. Its just a beautiful song.
Unfortunately they fired him to go back to their original lead singer
WHAT!!!! even if i didn't listen to this later i still would thought its a good song.....BECAUSE ITS A GREAT SONG hand down

OMG I would die for a hug from Eddie
Same thing happened to me. Great guy, comes off as very sincere
right now there's a 17 yr old kid in his room writing a song we'll all still be singing in 2067!🎶❤
It's amazing how little this song changed from its inception, even with a new band, different sound, 5 years, and a producer.
Yep ! When it's great, it's great ! Assuming Eddie shared some of the later royalty wealth with is old mates...
@tonypotts9652
Eddie wrote this long before Bad Radio. No need for royalties to a few that had nothing to do with it.
Watch out young man. You're gonna be a fuckin rock star.
not a star, a legend.
born in '79 and yeah..loved every minute of it the 90s was a great era
Me too and the same
That part in PJ20 when the arena sings Betterman and Ed looks overwhelmed with happiness made me cry multiple times... Now I've seen this it's guaranteed to make me cry even more.
I have never seen the film but i also cry when i hear that particular live version, imagining how that must feel for them ❤
These kids playing behind Eddie have no clue this guy is about to change the world and touch millions.
They also had no clue they were going to be left behind and this song would essentially rub their noses in it! lol
It was Eddie's song, and if these guys had the same work ethic as Eddie maybe they would have gone further with him
Sure they did, your opinion is negative.. loser
and of course u genius had clue about everything...another dumb comment...just because there's the same comment under every other video from the beginnings...
@@unclececil pretty sure that’s Brad Wilke from RATM on drums, the guitar player and bass player though have to be living with some regrets...

Young Eddie standing on that stage has no idea one day thousands of people will fill arenas and sing this with him.. Amazing....
Just wait Ed. Soon thousands will sing it back to you.
1989. Wow. Unreal. What a song.
Incredible that he had a completed version of this huuuge PJ song five years before they recorded it.
I read an interview with Brendan O’Brien talking about hearing Eddie play Better Man in the studio for the first time and telling him that the song is going to be a huge hit. I would have loved to listen to the next song in fact the whole gig. anyway, you made my day!
He wrote the music to everything credited to him.
Thanks bad radio ☺️❤️
I really enjoy this version!
He also wrote Porch back in bad radio days.the lyrics were a little different back than also..Same for better man ..
PRICELESS PEACE ART HISTORY HERE !!!!
This version sounds so much like if the song was written by REM! It's cool!
Eddie's actually a big REM fan, and he was the one who inducted REM into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, saying that he had listened to "Murmur" over and over as a teenager.
That's so cool!
I remember that Eddie did a performance of Man on the Moon with REM once, but I never knew that about him as a teenager.
I hear a strong The Police vibe in the chorus effected guitar and cross-stick drums on the verses.
Imagine seeing this live. Then having a gremlin in your head 6 years later when it was on the radio like you heard something before.
