In 2019 I flew to Seattle to chill with my cousin and his family. He's in this hip little neighborhood called West Seattle, which has a ton of cool shops, bars, restaurants, and an old school theater called The Admiral. One night, we walked to The Admiral to catch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. As the previews were stating, a guy walked in, waving his hands to get the attention of two women behind us. I tapped my cousin on the shoulder and said "dude, that's Eddie Vedder." My cuz looks up, and said "holy shit, that's Eddie Vedder." I Googled his wife, and sure enough, she was one of the gals behind us. As the movie ended, we went to the lobby and saw them. We were heading to the exit, and I was next in line behind him. He was holding the door open for me, and as I was going to attempt to speak with him, I noticed two elderly women behind me. I couldn't in good conscience not hold the door for them, so I thanked him for holding the door and told him I got it. He noticed that I was holding the door for the women, looked me dead in my face, and said "good for you, man." Getting recognition for holding the door from him was equally as cool as actually talking with him. He walked off with the women, and that was that. As a now 42 year old growing up in Houston, it was almost like seeing Bugs Bunny in real life. Was a cool moment.

Love hearing Eddie Vedder doing these interviews. But what i'd have loved even more is hearing young eddie doing in depth interviews like this back in the day when they started out.
Pearl Jam has been one of the most prolific touring bands that delivers balls out shows every show. Im lucky enough to have seen them 14 times ... i think... maybe more. Ten came out when i was in 7th grade......, didnt see them live till the No Code tour.
This is a great interview; it's refreshing to see that they are so well-rounded and continue making music because they recognize the magic of being together. I first saw them in concert when they played with the Ramones in the 90's and I've been a fan ever since.
What a horrendous interview. Bills the worst at asking questions. He only interviews people so he can validate his own takes. Every question is super leading. I can’t imagine the balls it takes to go into an interview like this with literally nothing prepared. What a waste of everyone’s time.
I couldn't agree more. I struggled through it. There are so few PJ interviews these days. Broken Record did a great one and so too Apple Music. Who asks about a concept record by asking if this is a conceit record? Eddy tried to help him out there but it was dead in the water by that stage. Such a pity.
It becomes clear he’s a pop culture guy but doesn’t really understand music. What was fascinating (and disappointing) was how poorly he asked some questions around sports. It’s still great to hear these guys talk about music and life.
I commented by myself already about the missing opportunity to talk about the inclusion of Present Tense in The Last Dance, but just now I came across the thing with the setlists. What a cool thing from Bill to mention that and just when Eddie was talking about it and was seemingly ready to dive in deeper into the process of creating setlists Bill throws that chance away and goes over to Jeff asking him about his connection to sports. How tone deaf can an interviewer be.
I listen to the podcast specifically for this interview but then when he said was on video I'm watching it all over again and it's a million times better!
Teared up several times. But, Eddie talking about Matt’s drumming… I smiled b/c the drums stood out in ways that I can’t explain. Matt is special. And so is Pearl Jam. Great interview.
This new album would be even better with Dave abruzzses drumming on it… I kinda lost interest after he was fired , I was not interested as much after vitalogy…. There were some good songs here and there , but something definitely was missing the chaotic drumming was missed ..
@@Julieroo28 I’m here cause the new albums a step back in in direction of their first 3 albums and it would sound even better if Dave A. Was drumming on it .
They also did Stern show ( didnt hear it) but PJ is alive. Summer of Pearl Jam mannnn, growing up, I use to blast TEN all the timeeeeeeeeeee. Never, ever got sick of that Legend Album. Then Vs! Holy shit that was a Banger too, and Vitalogy. The music of my youth....and they didnt fall off either. If you lost track of them, you have to hear Just Breathe, Future Days, Sirens, or The End...some of the best songs everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr by PJ.
I love Ed in this interview because it reminds me of the way he was in that 91' interview with him and Stone where he's not really taking it too seriously and seems like he might be a bit high. He's making a lot of the same facial expressions, mostly because he's probably thinking about surfing, The Who and Joe Strummer.
Can't believe that Eddie forgot about the "Drop acid" t shirt interview on MTV in 1992-1993. He and Stone were interviewed and he made a big show of Ten not being on vinyl and said that the liner notes unfolded is LP sized.
Was surfing Doheny State Beach at Dana point in 2016, and I heard (while paddling) soundcheck rehearsal of a weird "Shine on you crazy diamond" version with a tribal kind of drumming! Focused further, was Eddie rehearsing with Jack Irons! Didn't then know about the event (flew 1/2 way around the world to SoCal).
The interviewer seems obsessed with the 90’s, he keps repeating stuff like ”it’s been more than 30 years now”, or says “now that you’re older” it seems kind of disrespectful. It’s like the only thing that defines them is this huge success they had in the beginning? Like, why not ask a question about all they’ve done between 98-2020? He asks about each album but STOPS at yield (1998) because he feels the need to explain to Eddie and Jeff that all bands peaks after six years. Dude, the band has released more albums after yield, than before it. He did the same thing in the last interview too. I would be so annoyed. PJ are so restrictive with interviews, why did they pick this guy? Is it because he knows a lot about sports? I don’t get it…
You can tell from this how nice of a person eddie is. He's clearly uncomfortable with most of the juvenile questions and not vibing with the dude at all. But he never comes off as rude or mean. Clearly annoyed but he remains civil.
Bill is surprised that Yield is one of Jeff’s favorite albums, yet Bill immediately proceeds to say that the vibe in 1998 was special. You didn’t connect that? I guess you didn’t watch “Single Video Theory.”
6:20 ...Bellingham!!! That's my town!!! ❤❤❤ 13:29 ... 🤣 I must've lucked out... in the late '70's George Thorogood did two shows at my little college in Spokane, I was at the second show, 10 or 15 minutes in with much enthusiasm I jumped up on stage and boogied with George for a tune!! Nobody beat me up, nobody threw me offstage!! Funnest concert I ever went to!
Dang it, missed opportunity when Bill lists his sports facts and mentions the Present Tense endroll thing in The Last Dance and Ed chimes in "Surprisingly" and just went over it to mention an unrelated fact like the Warriors staying together. make sure to always listen to the person you interview and be ready for interviews to go in the direction of things being said.
Simmons could have done a lot more with an hour and a half with Pearl Jam. Everyone has a different style, but his nonchalant style cuts them off at many points and he starts bantering over them.
Thoughts: 1. Yield is my longtime favorite PJ album. Nice to hear the props from Jeff 2. Sorry to hear their Super Bowl answer but get it. I’d had a fantasy of a PJ Foo Fighters joint show 3. Fascinating to hear them talk about Taylor Swift, and her rarefied position. Especially from their perspective having been massive at one time. 4. Love the sports discussion. Real fans. 5. They’re both charming and thoroughly enjoyed this

Eddie looked pretty uncomfortable during much of this interview. I thought he was going to cut it short at some points. I think Bill meant concept of the album not conceit.
I’m with you, it was extremely awkward at times. Honestly it was Eddie’s fault he just would not engage with bill’s questions. They have been interviewed by bill multiple times before and bill interviewed the way he always does so I don’t blame him. Eddie just flat out refused to answer most of his questions and acted like they were all stupid lol. He’s just up his own ass honestly, and I say that as a huge Pearl Jam fan. Jeff was totally affable and relaxed and cool and Eddie sitting there acting insulted that bill asked him for one word reaction to each album? What the fuck is wrong with that question Eddie? Lol
Bill should have came out with an open ended kinda questions, instead of throwing 'facts' that he read from his ipad at Ed & Jeff. It's their life stories, they're the ones who knows better than anyone else on this planet. Just sayin.
Listening to Eddie comfirms for me that you don't have to agree with someone's politics to admire them. I agree with some of his views, but far from all. That doesn't mean I don't respect the man. I remember a time when folks could be on different sides of the political spectrum and still have respect for eachother. Still be friends.. Our Politics shouldn't define us, or devide us as deeply as they do today. We need to think deeper than that, because ultimatly as humans we ARE more than that. There's much more to us than our political leanings. Try asking someone you know who leans in a different politcal direction, how they're doing on a personal level. We all have more in common then we're condontioned to believe. I guess I'm just exhausted by all of the division and wish things were not like this. Maybe we're all too condtioned. Too bought in, to even attempt to find common ground in all the madness. All I can say for sure is, none of this politcal shit is good for mental health, and its imortant to not let it consume us completely. But perhaps its too late. I hope not.
Like so many people out there I am a MASSIVE fan of Pearl Jam and their music. I literally grew up to their albums and I’m sure it has shaped who I am as a person to some small degree. Now, with that said, this interview felt cringey to me throughout. I’m not sure that Simmons is the best person to do this interview and I am a small fan of his. (Just don’t consume a ton of his content.). I can’t tell if Eddie is just a tough interview or Simmons was so insecure with his questions. “Eddie’s looking at me like I’m crazy”. I would have directed questions at Jeff and let Eddie jump in when HE wanted. I think Simmons was doing the opposite. It just came off like a tough interview for Simmons.

For me, they’re all in their own category and great. Mudhoney is still greatest PNW band ever.
I think Eddie prefers responding to more direct questioning. I don’t think he just wants to be led into reminiscing about the ‘good ol’ days’.
I think Bill wanted it to be a “hang” but, Pearl Jam aint your sports watchin buddies. They have you there to promote their album… nothing more
@@mcnell311 just that both Eddie and Jeff are really into sports, someone also wrote in the comments here that they are friends with him, so probably thats why they did the interview, even though they are very restrictive about doing interviews. They were not there just "to promote their album", thats not their style
Don't know who Bill Simmons is, but this as my first time watching/hearing him interview anybody, I have zero interest to watch/hear him do it again...this felt like being on a bad first date with someone that asks the most awkward questions and makes the most awkward comments 🫠
Lol bad first date for sure good analogy
It doesn't get Eddie Vedder than this interview, and I am so happy to see Ed is officially in his Hat Phase!
How does Jeff ament still look the same?????!!! 😍
I wish a man would look at me the way Jeff looks at Ed. 😍
He's always smiling at him when Ed is telling stories on stage too.
@@karent2419 Jeff looks like such a sweet guy.
I would imagine there are ones that do, but -
Bill stop interrupting them. Good lord. Let them finish.
I think it’s his style for audio podcasting where he feels compelled to keep the pace going and to prevent listeners from getting alienated. But you’re right, it doesn’t translate well to this style of interview.
Seriously.
Maybe he’s doing just fine
This is the best interview I’ve seen of them in a while. I’m 12 mins in so watch rest when I’m back.
Go watch the one with Zane Lowe it’s 10x better than this one. This one is kinda hard to watch it honestly
@@spinblackcircles it’s not mate. Zane Lowe is so up their arse it’s cringe. This is just sports and music fans shooting the shit. It’s a lot more relaxed and you get more laid back discussion. Loads better
@@jimclawley9117 you’re telling me I didn’t have a hard time watching it? Lol Eddie acts like everything Bill asks him is stupid and basically refuses to play along or answer anything directly. It took me 3 sit downs to get through this interview, I watched Zane’s in one night
Wow. Guess they're making the rounds... please get an interview with Rick Beato!!
Awesome idea!!!
His interview with Robert Deleo from STP was incredible, Bill Simmons interviewing these guys is not the best choice
Seriously great idea. Rick loves PJ. He just did an interview with Matt not too long ago but I'd love one with the full band!
Love hearing Eddie Vedder doing these interviews. But what i'd have loved even more is hearing young eddie doing in depth interviews like this back in the day when they started out.
Eddie Vedder clocked the interviewer’s back handed compliments
What were the backhanded compliments?
@@Julieroo28 Im guessing the constant references to the 90s
Pearl Jam has been one of the most prolific touring bands that delivers balls out shows every show. Im lucky enough to have seen them 14 times ... i think... maybe more. Ten came out when i was in 7th grade......, didnt see them live till the No Code tour.
Eddie wasn’t interested in doing the retrospective thing and Bill kept pushing it.
I swear Jeff Ament has looked the same age for 30 years! I've always thought he was so incredibly handsome. Now I see he's aged like fine wine. 😘
I like that Bill is doing these on UA-cam now. I was listening to the podcast but then realized I could watch it. Pretty sick!
I listen to the podcast specifically for this interview but then when he said was on video I'm watching it all over again and it's a million times better!
I really love what Jeff Ament was saying about the magic of creating music organically versus the use of AI
Teared up several times. But, Eddie talking about Matt’s drumming… I smiled b/c the drums stood out in ways that I can’t explain. Matt is special. And so is Pearl Jam. Great interview.
Nah, Pearl Jam hasn't been the same with Matt drumming.
@@buzlink nah
This new album would be even better with Dave abruzzses drumming on it… I kinda lost interest after he was fired , I was not interested as much after vitalogy…. There were some good songs here and there , but something definitely was missing the chaotic drumming was missed ..
@@toddprater14 Yet here you are. 😂
@@Julieroo28 I’m here cause the new albums a step back in in direction of their first 3 albums and it would sound even better if Dave A. Was drumming on it .
They also did Stern show ( didnt hear it) but PJ is alive. Summer of Pearl Jam
mannnn, growing up, I use to blast TEN all the timeeeeeeeeeee.
The Apple Music interview on UA-cam is the best thing I’ve seen in a long while.
The idea of seeing Ed inspecting avocados in a grocery store is hilarious. I'd be like, nah, that can't be him.
Would've never guessed Johnny Ramone had the third largest collection in the world of 8x10's signed by MLB players. Over 5,000!
Jeff looks younger now than 30 years ago. Fuckin A
Can't believe that Eddie forgot about the "Drop acid" t shirt interview on MTV in 1992-1993.
Eddie ain’t playing games lmaoooo love it
Fantastic Pod! Eddie's story about the chili peppers and shooting hoops was 1 hundred
Jeff and Eddie are legends
I don’t get it…
Shout out to Big Sandy, MT!
Absolutely, Rick asks particularly thoughtful/informed questions!
Incredible interview. Thanks Bill (and of course Jeff and Eddie!)
I love that Jeff is the oldest guy in this and he looks like he's in his late thirties.
Bill Simmons interview is as if Chris Farley was doing an interview, "you remember....that was great"
Haha, you remember when you were a beatle? And your said the love you give is the love you take? Is that true? Haha chris Farley was so awesome.
Excellent chuckle you gave me!
Thanks for the company. Greetings from very near to Porto Ercole in Tuscany where Ed wrote at least one song.
When Bill mentioned the different drummers and Eddie just looked at him. 😅 I could listen to Eddie and Jeff just talk to each other.
You can tell from this how nice of a person eddie is. He's clearly uncomfortable with most of the juvenile questions and not vibing with the dude at all. But he never comes off as rude or mean. Clearly annoyed but he remains civil.
love PJ, love Bill Simmons, love sports, love art. thanks Bill
Haha! Hell, yeah!
The wine insta idea was funny. Jeff’s take on songwriters using AI was excellent.
But first…Pearl Jam
I am so glad they said no to Super Bowl. Es is totally right. It is disrespectful.
Bill is surprised that Yield is one of Jeff’s favorite albums, yet Bill immediately proceeds to say that the vibe in 1998 was special. You didn’t connect that? I guess you didn’t watch “Single Video Theory.”
It was such a strange reaction! I'm thinking Yield is a huge album! WTF
@@karent2419 Exactly. There was such a collaborative effort on that album.
I like this album," won't tell " is possibly the best song from dark matter.
Love the sweet granny energy from Vedder.
This literally made me lol
What a fantastic interview- relaxed, fun… nicely done
Thank you for this. This was the good shit.
I definitely purchased Vs. on vinyl because it came out a week or two before the CDs/Cassettes were released.
6:20 ...Bellingham!!! That's my town!!! ❤❤❤
The new album Dark Matter is brilliant.
Simmons could have done a lot more with an hour and a half with Pearl Jam. Everyone has a different style, but his nonchalant style cuts them off at many points and he starts bantering over them.
Thoughts:
1. Yield is my longtime favorite PJ album. Nice to hear the props from Jeff
2. Sorry to hear their Super Bowl answer but get it. I’d had a fantasy of a PJ Foo Fighters joint show
3. Fascinating to hear them talk about Taylor Swift, and her rarefied position. Especially from their perspective having been massive at one time.
4. Love the sports discussion. Real fans.
5. They’re both charming and thoroughly enjoyed this
The only grunge band left. True rock and roll survivors
It was Ben Stiller, not Affleck, in Reality Bites.

Eddie looked pretty uncomfortable during much of this interview. I thought he was going to cut it short at some points. I think Bill meant concept of the album not conceit.
I don't know, both Ed and Jeff have their arms folded alot of the time. I'm not sure they were vibing this interview
That was a decent interview. Enjoyed the sports angle.
Love Pearl Jam and Bill. This was a tough interview to watch.
Lol
I wonder how secretly triggered Bill was by there being a Mookie Wilson jersey right next to a Bill Buckner jersey…
Adding more than take away...wise words
Pearl Jam! Pearl Jam! PEARL JAM!
I read this in Chris Cornell's voice 😊
@@mstoads yes!
Awesome interview ❤
The best band ever !
Eddie, please, I need to know what T-Swift B Side you're talking about.
Love Ed’s voice
Bill should have came out with an open ended kinda questions, instead of throwing 'facts' that he read from his ipad at Ed & Jeff. It's their life stories, they're the ones who knows better than anyone else on this planet. Just sayin.
Couldn’t agree more
He didn't completely annoyingly fanboy them the entire time like Howard though
Was about to echo that Howard does the same thing. Gets his research and sticks to his script. It's frustrating.
I hope not.
I loved that he called it a ghetto blaster…without censoring himself. Vedder made me laugh a few times. 👍🏼
Eddie, pleeease tell us what b-side of Taylor S you like? Would so much like to know. How could the interviewer not ask??
Bill’s interview style is always fun to watch even when it goes off the rails.
Amazing interview/hangout. Thanks for doing it and sharing it with us.
Yield has always been my fav too.
Yes! Why is he so surprised by that?
It's a great album
Ed - you have done Howard and now bills show. Great interviews thanks. You guys should do hot ones. And would that complete the cycle?
Eddie’s body language at 48:20 “I’m too good to play your silly game”
Soooo cool, love the HQ
But first, our friends from Pearl Jam...Best ever podcast intro
Glad I knew better than to think I’d actually learn anything about the music. This was a tough hang I gotta admit.
Bill Simmons ReWatchables: Fuck yeah!!!
He opened the interview, with 202020! 😂😂😂
