I’m half German, half Black. It was difficult growing up. I was “too dark” to fit in on one side, and “too light” to fit in on the other side. This type of discrimination was very tough on my self esteem. But thanks to researching the origins of our human species as a whole, I feel so proud to be who and what I am. Cheers!

I am not Black myself but I am a dark person growing in Mexico I got called all types of slurs for being dark I also remember myself wishing so bad to be white or fair skinned and never understood why people have an issue with people with darker skin complexion as I grew I learned the history behind racism and today I am more than proud of my indigenous roots and my dark skin 🖤

I am a pale person from Mexico (living in the U.S.), and I think that the darker skinned people of the world are hands down the MOST BEAUTIFUL, oftentimes, inside and out. 🖤
Africans were brought to Mexico too, you know. That's part of the reason Mexicans are so racist against our people because part of their DNA is African and they are raised to be as light as possible. Also, slaves escaped to Mexico and settled in Northern Mexico, I believe and mixed with an Indigenous tribe. So, you never know. You could be dark because of either of those things. Ola bro! lol
Africans in Africa wore Nazi-Uniforms, go ask an older African. And I have a Friend whos from Jamaika and black, he is very old, he lived in Germany already in times of the 3. Reich and later in East-Germany, this guy is one of the persons that tells me a different history than the official one. The problem aren't "the Nazis" whatfuckingever that means, they never was, the problem are those masses of ignorants, that uniform themselves by their own wil and shout paroles, just because it is so "cool", "sweet", "smart" or whatever the blind follower, those was and will be always the problem. Think about that.
+de ray - Zimbabwe was never really colonized (despite what Wikipedia may tell you). According to that same Wikipedia Zimbabwe is currently 99.4% Black African. If it was really "colonized", it would be more like South Africa.
When she said people told her "she was too emotional, she's overreacting or the person did not mean it that way." It brought back so many memories of people saying the same to me in the past. We need to, as a society/race, stop discrediting others experiences.
They discredit you to deny responsibility and to not think they need to improve these supposed racist outliers in a supposedly modern western society. The truth is the work has just started and these "outliers" reveal a true, dominant popular undercurrent of thought that has habituated as a culture. Because, distraction with insults allows for the folly of their history to not be put in the proper context from which caused white people to plunder and pillage the word for resources because of their mismanagement of their lands. It obliterates memory and thought to remind that they were thieves and the real low culture. To flip it ans say thr fact they could do such evil means they are better,, smarter,, have a true culture and anyone who is not from a barbarian conqueror nation is inferior. It does not remind ths racist thr historical origins of why racism was created, it was created to justify stealing resources because the racist person came from a land destroyed by disease, famine and war. If you have such a dereliction of responsibility that your nation has to steal the world then create narrative to justify the theft. That is some serious, cultural, social and mental defects. That is a very dangerous culture.
It’s amazing and saddening to me that the Black experience, regardless of the nation, is very similar. The issue with hair, and the issue with our supposed complaining, and job opportunities is not unique to the US. It’s really sad when we simply want to live in peace and have the same opportunities for ourselves and our children that or white, Asian, etc have.
@@Komnenos83 lol No you don't and thinking that makes people who strive for america feel worse when they get here. Not everyone has equal opportunities, especially not blacks or of color people
It kills me anymore to see curly hair being straightened, especially if I know it's to fit in or make life easier. I used to straighten everyday and it's no longer as thick.
So.... You are not alive, but you are sitting here typing comments... Stop being so dramatic. If someone straightens their hair, they are not doing anything to you. You do not have to make the same choices.
My hair is extremely thick and mix curly, I'm not well so it's easier to straightened I'm not rejecting anything or anyone . It's nice to see able to manage your curls.
I get what you’re saying but straight hair is easier to manage. You see, black women have coarse, coily hair and it’s kinda frustrating, sometimes we just straighten our hair because it’s a lot easier than constantly rolling it up and putting different types of hair products on it.
I need to add that as great as this documentary is, this video is also heartbreakingly infuriating. And thank you to Ms. Pareigis for putting herself through this to bring more awareness to the experiences of our fellow travelers.
One of the reasons for calling mixed race people black is because of the white people and there rules of one drop of black blood and when I see so called bi racial people all I see is the color of the skin
@@shirellstevenson5970 Most mixed race people are a mix of the two it's rare that they ever take after one parent than the other and when it does (which again is very rare) statistically speaking it's pretty even on weather it's the mom or dad white or black.
Was supposed to be studying my Mandarin, ended up watching this amazing documentary instead. I've definitely struggled with my own racial identity and my place in a white society as a person of color. Thank you for giving these black people a voice. Masterfully done.
Ironically I've been studying the German language ( being part German myself) & I was supposed to be studying it now too. Then I came across this amazing informative video!! I lived in Berlin for four years of my life when I was a child and spoke fluent German. My experience as a black boy in Germany from 96' to 20' was free from racism. When I talk about Germany with people the first notion is that Germans are racist but that's not the case. There are Germans who really embrace foreigners. I lived in a Turkish neighbourhood and went to a European school where there were many nationalities. We all liked each other and actually admired our differences. Many of my friends wanted to be black like me and I wanted to be like them but as I got older, I came to love who God has created me to be. No matter the colour of our skin, we all bleed the same colour of blood. Horrible things were done in the past to black people but it's a choice to let what happened many years ago haunt you. We learn from the past and write our own future. I choose to write a future full of love to my neighbour irrespective of their skin colour.

I didn’t play that sh^t when I lived in Berlin. I won scholarship money to study abroad in Berlin for three months. A few Germans tried to test me, but I was so arrogant and full of myself I stood my ground and they ended up looking stupid.
This doc really opened my perspective on the black diaspora globally. It's really so damn cool to be a part of that conversation on being black in this world.
Or maybe improving yourself is the key to self confidence . Maybe if I said knowing white history was the key to my own self confidence the logic wouldn’t transfer. But hey...you do you 👍🏻
Self confidence is key to building black futures. In order to obtain self confidence you must support and confide in your own people no matter what, spread the word.
I want everyone to understand that black history is the hardest mother F, to know. So much of it has been buried or hidden. It’s the same ( conquering people who has the facts and control over them. The only reason why you are getting somethings out now is because there are a few ( blacks- or maybe I should say ( dark skin people ) who have made money. Accumulated money and position that is willing to donate , or free up money to dig up and research things. The missing or stories were distorted or destroyed to have control . Where are the books . Only stories passed down through generations gave us this chance. Visit all the Museums around the world . See the stolen history / stolen past .
The Black peoples of this world have thousands of diverse ethnicities and nations each defined by their own unique histories. One cannot lump together all the histories of such diverse nations as Asanti (West Africa), Masai (East Africa), Ndebele (Southern Africa) and Jamaican (Caribbean) as "Black" history any more than the diverse histories of White nations such as Russian, German, Italian and Argentino can belong as a single entity called "White" history. The notion of categorising history as no more than "Black", "White" and "Asian" has its roots in racist generalisations on one hand and in neo-Marxist deconstructionism on the other.
My sister-in-law was adopted from a Germany orphanage when she was about 3 years old. During their childhood, my husband taught her English and helped her adapt to her new family in America. My father-in-law father was in the US Army and during the 1960's many African American military families were encouraged to adopt mixed-race babies from Germany because there was so much racism they would be doomed to growing up in foster homes or in the orphanage. Thanks for sharing this important information.
My ex mother in law was adopted in Germany by her blk parents who served there, same story for the most part. She was less than a year old at adoption.
i cried watching this. reminded of all the times i was called names and treated differently by teachers as a black child living in germany. i too got the question "if you are black, why is you dad white?" i was called poop up until 5th grade, because they said that my skin was the same color as poop. I eventually came to believe that i was poop. i straightened my hair and wore blue contacts, i begged my mom to let me dye my hair blonde, i would go online looking for ways to lighten my skin, i avoided the sun as if it would actually burn me. I hated school. I actually believed until i was like 9 years old or so, that i was the only black person in germany, besides my mom of course. It wasn't until long after we went back to brazil that i came to learn about black history and that i came to love my race and color.

Butter Bread A monument is meant to elevate and honor someone. The statues can be placed in a historical museum. But if the person is not to be lauded, if the person perpetuated racism or slavery, then that person should not be celebrated in a "monument." A statue of that person can be placed in a historical place.

Thank you for making this documentary. I'm viewed as bi-racial even though I am predominately white. I was raised in a white, racist Republican family in Philadelphia. My family made racial slurs against people who looked like me. This was the 1950's and 1960's. My mother was from South Africa and I was not raised my her. She was raised white in SA but would have been considered colored, today. It was quite difficult growing up at that time. A few months ago, when there was the attack in Manchester I went out the day after and a woman yelled at me on the street, like as if it was MY fault what happens in England? I'm Caucasian, an atheist, a GERMAN, but still Ive always been bullied and discriminated. Can't even begin to imagine what actual black people must go through.
schrott adresse, and perhaps you're in a much better position than most whites to comprehend some of the many reasons why most "bi-racial" people identify as black.

I am Black and German (my grandmother is from Germany, and my grandfather is African American). I remember one summer in the late 1990s my family went to Germany over the summer to visit our family in Frankfurt. On the plane ride, I was being a kid (was 10 at the time) and bumped into a white German lady on the plane....she said something derogatory in German about me under her breath, but my Oma overheard it and jumped down her throat 😆. My grandmother has always encouraged me to embrace my mixed heritage, and she always told me I am BLACK & GERMAN both are important and make me ME and to never EVER be ashamed of my heritage. I love both cultures they are rich, passionate, with histories full of struggle. I love that Black Germans are thriving, and forcing the recognition that being German is more than skin color. I would eventually like to visit Germany again, and live there in my family's home state Hessen.

"Who's afraid of the black man?" is a kid's game similar to a game of tag where the "black man" tries to catch the others. However, this game is not about a "black man" as in dark-skinned but about chimney sweepers whose faces and hands were black because of soot. It's an old game that comes from a time when some poor people would sell their kids for a season to work as chimney sweepers. Kids were small so they could get into all kinds of small spaces but it was hard work and many got injured and died. So when the "black men" came to your town, it was a reason for kids to be afraid and hide so as not to be "caught" --> thus the game
@Konoha-kun. Very interesting explanation, but politically correct individuals are not showing much intellectual capacity. So most probably your explanation does not stimulate their brain activity
I completely understand that etymology, but sadly, little children singing it are not aware of the backstory and are using it literally as an unfortunate weapon.
@Karlene E what makes you think that children are using it as an 'unfortunate weapon'? when I was a child, I never connected the black man to being a black person, though I didn't know the origin of this game.

I also know no one dare mess with me because of my brothers. They are all (except 1) highly successful. Sending positive thoughts your way, my friend.

Maybe because it does not apply to you, you are better than us you're pure (wink). It's the story of the people who were snatched from the motherland. Maybe you can discuss how Africans from Africa treat their brethren in America..

I did not experience true racism until my parents moved to the U.S. in the 60s. After, a year in the U.S., my mother insisted we move back to Germany. I served three tours in the U.S. Army Europe. I lived two lives, one as a U.S. soldier, and one as a German.
This was beautiful, my grandpa was blk and German. He passed away before I could meet him. I just wanted to know more about my roots and the struggles that had to be endured before my time. Wow!! Powerful documentary. Thank you for this post.
This is a very enlightening special I thoroughly appreciated the realities in life that you experienced in Germany and the fact that you were willing to share them. Thank you so much.
I love this video. It's sad as children that many of us are taught to be ashamed of our skin color, but it's so awesome when you realize your own beauty and you won't change it for anything for the world. I know I wouldn't. I love my blackness and I've taught my children to love the skin they are in, and now I tell my grandchildren the same thing. Thank you for sharing your story from Germany, and hopefully, you will come to the United States and learn Black history here. I love looking at the history from all around the world. I am white and was born in mannheim and I was abandoned at my oma’s house who had her hands full with some of her own children and theirs. I was pretty much neglected and ran the streets in the sixties when a lot of rubble was still present. I came to America where I was not accepted as I didn’t speak the language and I lived on an army base that was full of soldiers doing their thirty years and raising their families and they fought in Germany and harbored hatred and passed it on to their children and I was attacked and took three schools to finally not be harassed. America lied to us only a few of us knew this; Some of the white guys I know didn't take me seriously when I told them this.
When she said people told her "she was too emotional, she's overreacting or the person did not mean it that way." It brought back so many memories of people saying the same to me in the past. We need to, as a society/race, stop discrediting others experiences.
As an Ossi can I only agree with you on this subject! Пака!!!
I get what you’re saying but straight hair is easier to manage. You see, black women have coarse, coily hair and it’s kinda frustrating, sometimes we just straighten our hair because it’s a lot easier than constantly rolling it up and putting different types of hair products on it.

Knowledge of Black History is Key to building Up your self confidence.

In the United States a few years ago , a white supremacist entered a black church and started shooting at the people ..several blacks died in such incident..Also, if I'm not mistaken, a white supremacist in New Zealand did something similar some months ago..Now I never ever hear of blacks, native Americans , East asians, brown Latin Americans etc killing people because of their skin color ..So it makes total sense to feel fear when a white person brags about being white .

@Karlene E what makes you think that children are using it as an 'unfortunate weapon'? when I was a child, I never connected the black man to being a black person, though I didn't know the origin of this game.
thanks for the history of the game:)

I am German and black. I was born and grew up in Munchen. I can relate to some of the issues addressed in this video. It is so nice to see my fellow Germans of color being so successful. I did not experience true racism until my parents moved to the U.S. in the 60s. After, a year in the U.S., my mother insisted we move back to Germany. I served three tours in the U.S. Army Europe. I lived two lives, one as a U.S. soldier, and one as a German.
Being biracial can be such a tremendous challenge even under the best of circumstances

We live in this society. Most people are just a part of it. To live it is much more traumatic as you see in the minority communities in America.

Its one of the greatest countries in the world.

I know I wouldn't. I love my blackness and I've taught my children to love the skin they are in, and now I tell my grandchildren the same thing. Hey! Notice, women especially how much they want to be like us? Plastic surgery, tanning and more. Deep down they resent themselves and love us truly but will never admit it. Never! White women are not having children, so their population is getting small, real small. That's why they don't want women to have abortions in America. As little as a generation they'll be close extinction. Or at least lesser in numbers than they are now.

@@dontthinkso8533 You are correct. All the advanced nations in the world, eg Germany, South Korea, Japan etc are having fewer children, but better educated and inventive. Africans and black people outsideAfrica tend to be polyphiloprogenitive. We are human beings and the dignity of every human being is inviolable. That's what people have to understand and to respect.
My mother’s aunt married black and all my cousins are mixed and because I was never exposed to racism I didn’t realize it existed until I saw adults interact in a racist manner. I didn’t understand until I learned the history of the us . Carrying the middle name of Adolf didn’t help much either. So I guess my oint is we all have struggled as Germans and probably will for a long time but I am also now successful and that is its own reward!
