One of the most wealthy Germans, Dieter Schwarz (founder of big the supermarkets Lidl and Kaufland) lives in my city. He is retired now, and there are no existing photos of him in the last 20 years. The newspaper doesn't write about him, because he wants to live a decent life. His house is in an area where the "upper class" of our city lives - many beautiful old houses, some very decent, some more luxurious, many "normal" houses for one family and even some houses with more apartments for people of all incomes. He has build a new campus with a special college/university where the students are part time in a company (Lidl/Kaufland) and part time at the college. He does much for our city, without telling everyone. Very likeable 😊

I am from Germany and its so normal for me, that wealthy people are staying „unknown“. Its funny, how clearly this documentary tries to explain it, as if it is the strangest thing. Well thats very shallow thinking! Im not doubting he made it like that, but evil people don’t care about that. They just want to get that money from him. Why really wealthy people hide their wealth is: - Cousins or family who are like a bucket with big holes want more and more every time. They can also pose an existential threat sometimes because of greed! - Divorce lawyers will find out where you live and stack your wife. These are not your abrogation old lawyers, they are people who hire professionals make seducers/young macho guys to hit on your wife. They act like they have money and act like they love her and conspire to take your money in court. Then the lawyer comes and asks for 30% and the guy tells her shes to beautiful to waste her genes with only one man! - Criminal bums will target your children and could steal from them, extort them or kidnap them! - Criminals could target you also in ways I won’t mention here so not to inspire lowlifes. This is why you hide your money no matter how ethically you got it! Because if you really worked hard to earn it you want to relax, not fight wars and battles to keep it!

I didn’t know what a double negative was prior to my boarding school. Typically, we graduated in the top 1% in English. There is a definite difference in old money and new money. Exactly. People that come from a family that has been rich for generations do not flaunt at all. They may talk about their business adventures, but not how rich they are. They also do not wear luxury brand clothes. Instead, they purchase bespoke.
One downside of this „we don’t talk about money“ attitude is, that many people don’t know how money works. I wish there was more conversation on how to deal with money correctly in order to generate wealth and not end up or stay poor.
Lmao, the system works because the bulk of people have a poor/surface level understanding of how money works. If they did, you would have bank-runs within days.

I like what the other man said, it's not rich vs poor, it's about rich people giving opportunities and jobs to those in need. Not all of us are born rich.
The richer you get, the more you'll realize that it's not what you've seen in movies or on instagram. Status signaling becomes decreasingly important. Fancy clothes, supercars on a lease, expensive watches... That's all made for people trying to look rich (who more often than not aren't rich or typically won't stay for long). You become rich by acquiring assets, not liabilities. If you really are wealthy though, why bother showing anyone? Money speaks and wealth whispers. It's better to be rich and anonymous than poor and famous.
The nouveau riche Chinese clearly flaunt their money...and definitely do not follow what you stated above. In Toronto right now, there is so much flaunting of wealth that it becomes disgusting. True. The same is true in at least the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. Showing off is considered obscene. It's not a 120K electrical Jaguar, it's 'the car' It's not a € 2,3 million mansion, it's your house. That's also why most sponsorships and donations are done from companies. It's not just for tax reasons, but also because it's easier to say "This company has donated € 1000 to charity" than to say "This guy donated € 1000 to charity". Stamping your company logo on the van of the 'food bank' who gives leftover food to people on benefits is considered acceptable. Asking them to put your name or photo up there is considered obscene.
It is considered rude in Germany, to flaunt wealth or even talk about money, especially with people you dont know very well. A classy rich person will not talk about their wealth.

even if I were rich i wont go public, tbh having a normal life is the rare opportunity which many people take for granted. These opportunity are what the actors, singers, and even public figures had to gave up.

if you think about Germany's history of colonization and the third reich, you'll find some of the top riches there, their fortune was passed from one generation to the next. Nobody of them wants to talk about blood money.
As a German I agree and understand that 'staying under the radar, quiet' menality these people have. It makes them kinda more normal looking and sympatic than those showing, spending (or better wasting) their money/whelth in all kinds of media and situations given to them. That could maybe called 'Rapper-style' in one or another way cause of the stereotype of spending lots of money on costy 'bling bling' stuff that is mostly not even needed in basic. Just for making a show-off to let the normal seen they 'have and can' buy whatever theiy want. :) In fact it's just simply senceless spending of money for profiling and standout from the rest. It clearly depends on the own character ect. a person have build in lifetime.
Truly rich people don't need to show off. The people who need to know already know them and those that don't know don't count. I admire the guy who gave his children the option of whether or not they want to inherit their family business, because forcing someone to do something they're not interested in is sure-fire way to bring the whole business down...and I also admire his children for opting to not be in the family business, because it's a great temptation to inherit a multi-billion euro company that will set you for life and have a whole fortune fall into your lap, and they actually have the determination and strong will to not give in to that temptation (or maybe they already have their own multi-billion euro business in the first place LOL)..

That's because German media isn't as badgering as American or even British media. They know their limits. The most amazing wealthy people are, the one's who do what they do with complete discretion & respect. Where all's done in silence and they're actually happy to do it, from the core of their heart. They expect no attention, accolades, nothing in return. They don't demand to be centre stage. This reminds me....There's an Indian woman (name forgotten unfort), who was labelled as one of India's "untouchables", from the poorer & lower caste. She alone, managed to go from true rags to riches & proved India and all her critics wrong. She literally, rose to the top & shone, alone. Obviously she now has her team assisting her, but her initial sheer hard work, that was all hers to own & take credit for. The best thing about her....She's never, ever forgotten her roots, where she hailed from, so she regularly visits her village and takes excellent care of all the countless villagers. She provides free eye checks & required glasses, free medical checks/blood pressure checks, free maternal care, free food & plenty of it, plus her wonderful, optimistic, fun loving & caring company. All the villagers so await her visits & they truly love/appreciate her & all she does for them. They look to her as their living Angel. She expects nothing in return, but to do some good for those she cares about. She knows their plight, for she once walked within their shoes & rode the waves with them. She's a millionaire, but you'd never know. Her office is simple & her surroundings, nil pretentious, arrogant, etc;. Some may say...."Well, she's very wealthy, therefore, she's a moral obligation if anything, toward the poor in her country, her village. Well, she's certainly not obligated to do anything, as many rich people don't, but here's the thing....She chooses to, actually wants to & she feels good about it, happy to do so. This is reflected, in her generally happy demeanour, her sheer optimism & zest in life." There are many like this woman, both in India's wealthiest circles and around the world. I admire the mindset of Germans. They're smart, hardworking and cultured. They are also proud, and have a superiority complex about themselves. However, once they achieve greatness or success, they usually celebrate with some joy but they do not overdo it. To them, after success it's back to work. One reason why rich Germans don't like to show off is because they realise that no matter how rich they are, there's always someone else richer.....so what's the point of showing off. And lastly, Germans are very secure people about themselves.
"One reason why rich Germans don't like to show off is because they realise that no matter how rich they are, there's always someone else richer.....so what's the point of showing off." The real reason is that they are afraid that others will take something away from them. Many have been kidnapped in the past, so they are careful.
@@Nost2682 Not only that in Germany it is pretty bad to show off wealth, because it is not sociably accepted. You can google "Neidgesellschaft" to find out more about it.
It is quite different from cultures where "respect" is about gold chains, being extra loud and flaunting all that you supposedly have. Some think it's xenophobia if such people are not so well received. But it's mostly just cringe. (And we do have our own share of them as well.)
You are generalizing to all germans, from all lands in Germany or social class when in reality respectful and well raised germans are only a category of the population, like in many other places. For example: meet some of the young germans living abroad, like here in Cluj-Napoca in Romania. When it comes to students, many of them are middle class far left types (oohhh the irony). They are some of the worst neighbours when it comes to extremely loud parties, getting shit face drunk etc...and the only ones in my part of town that throw parties with 30 people with 0 care for Covid or the fact that it's in the middle of the week and other people have to sleep and go to work....even romanians, who are usually more careless about other people, are more discrete and go to a private mountain cabin outside of town in the weekend to have a party and avoid making noise in the working days. PS: I have had italian, french and Middle East neighbours, all much more respectful by comparison, all medical students. Also go talk to a middle or upper management young woman in a german owned multinational with an office in Romania...they are constantly harassed by some of the german bosses and some german colleagues, because the mentality is that all Eastern Europe women are whores and will instantly fall in love or have sex with a 40-50 year old married dorky guy from the first world...even if that woman is also in upper management, in a relationship, earns almost the same, is married, has kids etc...the pathetic text messages and stuff I have seen sent to female friends from this guys is mind blowing, or the fact that if they are visiting and go out with the employees there is an unwritten rule not to live a woman alone with them at the end of the night. Also, something I have heard said by allot of german friends is that the reason that they have this culture of being respectful or obeying the law in Germany is because the laws are very well enforced, the fines are very big, even by german standards and the old conservative german culture still has a big influence in society, although it is slowly getting smaller with the new generation and also with the growing number of non german people in the population.
In my country Korea we have the pejorative term "jolbu," meaning "small-time rich." It refers to 3rd-tier rich folk with net worth of maybe a couple million dollars or less who like to live as if they were 10 times richer--supercars, designer bags, clubs, every lavish meal duly posted on Instagram, etc. They wouldn't know true wealth if they saw it. One of the most wealthy Germans, Dieter Schwarz (founder of big the supermarkets Lidl and Kaufland) lives in my city. He is retired now, and there are no existing photos of him in the last 20 years. The newspaper doesn't write about him, because he wants to live a decent life. He has build a new campus with a special college/university where the students are part time in a company (Lidl/Kaufland) and part time at the college. Well thats very shallow thinking!
Im not doubting he made it like that, but evil people don’t care about that. They just want to get that money from him.
Why really wealthy people hide their wealth is:
- Cousins or family who are like a bucket with big holes want more and more every time.

It's not just Germans. I think it's most Europeans who are very reluctant to show their wealth.
True. The same is true in at least the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. Showing off is considered obscene.
It's not a 120K electrical Jaguar, it's 'the car'
It's not a € 2,3 million mansion, it's your house.

I've always appreciated as an American how the ultra rich in other countries are much different than the ultra wealthy in the US. However there are alot of wealthy people in the US like this as well - just bc u see things on tv or in movies doesn't mean it's true for all, but I do think we have our priorities messed up in the US and the flaunting of wealth gets a lot of attention i.e. the kardashians.
Having debt taught me I don't like it and I stopped living outside my means and worked hard to pay off debts and now I am different than I used to be, but it's certainly hard.
I was actually just at a fancy wedding last night and thought to myself what is the point to all this , unless u are the immediate family or in the wedding party all weddings are the same. But people have fancy wedding to flaunt wealth and I find that sad.

As a German I agree and understand that 'staying under the radar, quiet' menality these people have. It makes them kinda more normal looking and sympatic than those
showing, spending (or better wasting) their money/whelth in all kinds of media and situations given to them. That could maybe called 'Rapper-style' in one or another way cause of the
stereotype of spending lots of money on costy 'bling bling' stuff that is mostly not even needed in basic. Just for making a show-off to let the normal seen they 'have and can' buy whatever
theiy want. :) In fact it's just simply senceless spending of money for profiling and standout from the rest. It clearly depends on the own character ect. a person have build in lifetime.

To those who are interested to see her in action, please check out the interesting documentary called......"Money, luxury & fame. The new super rich in India." It's also a DW documentary.

They should learn from these Germans.
Interesting
Let them do so as long as they strived to earn extra money
do whatever makes you happy. even if you accumulate a lot of wealth, it's not like you can bring it with you when u die. so let them enjoy their money.

US super rich: "I have much money now, I am now in the list of wealthiest individual in US. Right now I am reaching for the power, like presidency or public offices"
German super rich: "I don't wanna talk about myself as I fear for my family, myself and disclosure. I don't need to be in the list of wealthiest person in Germany and I don't wanna know"
Don’t be foolish, they’re using their money to silently influence politics but don’t want to be recognised doing so
Most US super rich are like that too. They stay under the radar. People who became rich in one generation tend to show their wealth off
Thanks for the feature!❤
Loved the Indian super rich documentary, I laughed so much. This one is so serious but it's interesting to see the difference in the behaviours of rich people in different countries.

For all the not german speakers. Many things that were being said are translated wrongly. Don't take everything by word
I disagree, the are a lot of things that cannot be translated word for word. German is quite the complex language; English on the other hand, isn't.
The translation and adaptation of sayings/phrasing in this video is great.
@@kathinker7547 it means the translations are sometimes exaggerated to fit a narrative.
@@huyo3517 they're not tho, they're just slightly innacurate
@@jacobdaniels3246 ye but i was right that they exaggerated things so the rich people would fit a narrative that the “writer” want. There was so many so the rich people would seem overreacting like “swimming with money” (etc.)
Sometimes you have find a phrase that actually exists in English, instead of translating perfectly. Otherwise it would probably sound strange in English.
The truth is most Uber rich didn’t earn it. Some did very horrible things to get it. That doesn’t mean they’re evil, they’re human and actually quite normal. They took advantage of a system which really is just about as normal as anyone that could. It’s just rare that it works out so well
Like what ???
I’m Russian and I lived in Germany for some short time during my internship. I love German culture, German people, German mentality. Sometimes I feel I should have been born German :))) Und..! Ich liebe die Deutsche Sprache!:))

I never been to Germany but during college days I took German language and my teacher is German and he frequently travels to germany. Super Rich Germans and super rich Ghanaians have a lot in common.
Here in Ghana, people who earned their money in honest means (not by doing illegal things like corruption) are often so quiet about their money. It will surprise you that the richest person in Ghana according to news websites isn’t even the richest person in Ghana. That’s how secretive they are
Lol… as a German hearing them and talking in the Background but have to concentrate on the English translation is kinda funny 😄😂

I know someone very high up in society and extremely wealthy, what I like about him is that he's very humble and never lets his wealth define him
Germans are so hard working, calculates everything, smart with saving and spending. They are humble and so people oriented.

germans are not hard working, they are smart, immigrants works for them
