    I don't think it's possible to find your personal style without paying attention to trends, though. Laini Ozark makes a good point that everything in fashion was trending at some point. To be fashionable or have "timeless style" you just need to be able to look at trends and know whether it's for you or not, instead of just hopping from one thing to the next every few months

    The wanting to look good but wanting to stand out thing is so true. On the surface I don't care what other people thing of my outfit but I do tend to get flustered when 9/10 times I blend in with the crowd or when I'm stumped to figure out something I didn't wear yet which leads me to social media, which is floded with current trends. It’s just clothes. Nobody with actual merit cares about what you’re wearing. People who do are self-absorbed, vacuous dolts who think their shirt is their personality.
      Wearing clothes is not a personality trait. If you rely on clothing to express yourself and tell the world who you are, then you have bigger fish to fry. Think about it like this: if you’re a movie, and your clothing choices are the audio track, would the world get a good sense of you if the audio was muted? Would who you are still come across if your clothing wasn’t part of the equation?

    when i compare the amount of people that can dress now compared to when I was in highschool, its definitely gone up. But this video sums it up perfectly more and more people are learning to become "trendy" through short form fashion online. Its not nessecarialy a bad thing but it gives lots of people false impressions of fashion. it can be really hard to make any outfit that you wear look good, and lots of people who follow trends without having their own style can only pull off a few outfits at most. The people who have their own style are comfy with taking different things and making a coherent outfit, and can adapt their style over time to fit in smaller microtrends that they know work with what they wear without only wearing trendy things. I am glad that more people are getting into fashion but lots of my friends complain that they hate how they only look good in one or two things and this is exactly the reason why.

      Really good comment, thank you for sharing. I agree, it’s great that more people are taking interest in fashion. • @Mojiiizz
      @Mojiiizz Рік тому +1

      @@WhatsTheHype.Landon personally I think that both will happen at the same time. Short form fashion content will continue to expose more and more people into the world of fashion making it more and more popular, making the micro trends more and more important. In my eyes this will get old to a lot of people who were exposed to fashion through that same platform that made it so popular. At the end of the day the people who truly love fashion will see through the importance of the "micro trends" and find their own style they never would have if not for a fashion tiktok on their for you page. Overall I don't think you can classify tiktok fashion as good or bad, it has its positive and negative points just like everything else. I feel like its become more and more of a trend to hate on fashion trends that become popular on tiktok though. I find myself trapped in this, hating on the ever popular panda dunks but. at the end of the day I don't like how they look, but lots of people will hate on something they find cool just because is popping off on tiktok.

    This video seems kind of gatekeepy to me. I agree that it helps to know your personal style in order to incorporate trends better, but the opposite is also true. Trends are a common way for people to get into fashion and branch out into their personal style afterwards. And since so many styles are trending right now, so many people are starting out, but haven't branched out yet. And that's okay. I actually think it's a good thing. More people are getting into fashion. Just because you're into a trend and haven't completely found your identity yet doesn't mean you should be discouraged, and it doesn't mean you're "just" trendy. Someone just getting into Gorpcore or Workwear isn't going to have 5-6 outfits they can wear with that one item yet. Maybe they bought an Arcteryx jacket because they didn't know about other brands yet, but later on they will. My point is that people have to start somewhere. I know I did.
    Also, your statement "the opposite of trends seems to be timeless items" is wrong, I think. It's usually the opposite. Things that your grandpa wore back in the day is exactly what's trending now. The "straight denim, converse & plain white tee" look has been one of the most prevalent styles of this decade. New Balance, Dunks, Sambas, Workwear, and even Gorpcore to a large extent, were all things regular people used to wear in the past, and that is exactly why they are trending now; because they're timeless.
    I would've expanded more on consumerism / over-consumption.

    • @WhatsTheHype.Landon
      @WhatsTheHype.Landon  Рік тому +1

      Yeah that’s a good point, I was thinking more of not to buy trends without knowing your style because it could easily be a waste of money if you end up not genuinely liking the item. Trends are definitely a good way to find new styles and what you like. We also agree on the timeless fashion idea. What you explained was what I was trying to get at with the current trendy styles being watered down into still being timeless. Thanks for the comment!

      i agree with this a lot, speaking from personal experience i got into fashion at a time when the trends were super out of my price range (around the climax of the hype beat era) so i had no option of using the trends to help me figure out my personal style and i really wish i did, because instead of that i had to just sort of jump straight into the deep end not really knowing what i was doing having had my parents buy my clothes all throughout my childhood so it's an understatement to say i had a countless amount of blunders before coming to my personal style today. Anyone i know who tells me they're wanting to get into fashion always gets the same advice from me, go with simplistic version of the trends at the moment and figure out which bits you like and which bits you don't, and from those more basic but trendy fits start to incorporate your own taste and interests. Like let's say i know a girl who's wanting to get into fashion but doesn't know where to start. I'd say just start with a classic all black fit, but from there maybe she gets into the sort of y2k look that's really popular at the moment and decides she suits low-rise jeans, that's a nice easy change to make you just need the new jeans, then she can build her wardrobe out from there to better suit the look.
      So TLDR I think trends are super useful to use to figure out personal style, because otherwise you'll end up looking kinda shit like i did for ages

    Trends got me spending money pretty blind on most of the time low quality/un-styleable pieces that did not fit my body well. But in doing so made me actually pay attention to fashion because I asked myself why did these things not look good on me, and slowly began learning and developed my own style and used those old purchases with the new in ways that actually looked good and fit my aesthetic.
    Unfortunately a lot of people are still in this phase of discovery and it's much easier to copy what looks good on other people rather than experiment themselves, even if they do the value of fast fashion stuff seems much more alluring compared to more expensive pieces because you get to try more things. So even if they do look very regular everyday it's very understandable since most people just wanna go outside looking put together rather than spending all this time developing their own personal expression.

    Trends are a great way to dive into styles that you want incorporate into your personal style. I would have extended on your point about the yeezy gap jacket. If you really like it but don’t know how to fit it into your wardrobe, buy it as an investment piece so that you could buy other articles of clothing to go with it. 350s are my example - I got into streetwear because I wanted to spend my stimulus check on a fire pair of Yeezys. When I got the 350s, I felt like the biggest dork in them. But then I began researching what clothes go well with them. And then that evolved into me branching out into other lanes of streetwear (e.g. workwear, techwear, athleisure, etc.). On the opposite end of the spectrum, I bought some Rick owens on sale and found that the brand doesn’t fit into my aesthetic simply because the price point is too high for me to really play around with.
    These gatekeepy videos are kind of annoying tbh. Trends are awesome entry points for people to get into streetwear. If someone is rocking a Yeezy gap jacket with the $20 pants they got from Costco - that’s exciting. It’s like the gym, we all have to start somewhere

Being fashionable invokes this idea you're person of value and in the know, and being out of fashion trends makes people think you're weird or something. It's funny because people know this, but they still join in on trends anyway precisely because they dont' wanna feel left out or actually be left out. FOMO is a very strong motivator. But I hate when people wear one style or brands just for the hype and when the hype falls off never touch them again and jump on the next one. Most of the time I try to wear somethng like supreme after the hype is over.
    Here in germany, the current style trend is btw fucking terrible lol

      I look for similar style influences! I agree, mixing and matching your interests is a great way to create your own look. Any German fashion creators that you’d recommend?

    I believe the reason so many 'celebs' look good in their cloths is because they're cool FOR WHAT THEY CREATE, not what they wear. That's why random mf's who buy the same cloths don't look right. You can't buy cool.

    • @WhatsTheHype.Landon
      @WhatsTheHype.Landon  Рік тому

      That’s a really good point! I’ve felt that before myself, you can buy the same clothes as someone else, but it’s the person/creation that makes the clothing what it is

    im not a trendy type lol dont follow all the fashion trends on tiktok or any social media. Ive always just stuck to wearing the same clothes ive worn since i was 12 (jeans and a shirt/hoodie) But then i do like to put on band tees of my favourite bands but that still doesnt make me trendy.

    I was at the most recent dime comp in Montréal. My buddy's girlfriend was talking to me and she stopped and looked around and said "God... Everyone looks the same.." to which I replied "yeah it's funny kids thinking their all unique/different and then you show up to a major even and realize everyone wears the same shit.."

    I don't understand how anybody could like those yeezy puffers, in my opinion there's so many better options for puffers out there.
