You can actually brake much later if you learn heel toe. It's a bit tricky at first, but if you want the most out of a traditional manual, Rev matching on downshifts is almost a requirement.
@@Doughtinator you will find you get better engine braking with heel toe. It allows you to downshift sooner without causing the car to become unstable from the drive wheels trying to slow down too much too fast. The idea is to match the engine speed with the wheel speed. So engine braking is nice and smooth while allowing you to downshift sooner with out the drive wheels losing traction totally from the difference in wheel speed.
