      The other day i passed a guy right before the finish line for 3rd place, i see the race ranking pop up and i see im 0.05 ahead. But like 2-3 second later my opponent's car is moved to last place with DNF mention. He probably rage quit right after the finish line (the game bug out) or maybe right before the finish, im not sure but yea dont do that either haha

      I have learnt to keep going even if I have been punted off and find myself last and 10 seconds behind the last driver.
      I have often got back and finished in the top six as others just spin out in front of me or get penalties.
      Consistent fast lap times really pays off.

    One extra tip I've got about watching replays: watch it in the camera view you personally race in at least once as well. Chase cam is useful for identifying some parts of the track you might not be able to see and building a visual reference library for any given corner, but learning where to brake in the camera you are actually going to use is critical.
    As I play in VR, there is a lot of extra information that's crucial for speed I glean from watching in first person camera. Not having access to the digital Tach, for example, means I need to be able to read the gauges actually present in the car to figure out when to shift.

    Great instructional video Rory, thanks. I'm a driver who's gone from B to A and back again a number of times. My other tips are to do the weekly race you're good at (B or C). Spend a half hour or more qualifying as high up the grid as possible (bit of a shame we have to do this) so you're racing ahead of battles and carnage. Do that race over and over and you'll get positive (blue) DR after every race. If you're having a bad race, don't quit because it'll take you another 3 or 4 races to get back the DR you lose if you quit.

    • @AD1978leo
      @AD1978leo Місяць тому +5

      I'm working on getting my DR up, I think I'm at C now or really close to it. haven't been racing online long ( in GT7 ), but I've been playing racing games my whole life.. But my safety rating is up to an S, and I'm more proud of that. Of course, I love to win, but a great race with clean drivers is satisfying no matter where you place.

    A+ driver here, but not as high as Rory. Just want to add a take from a guy who got there doing things a little different.
    I will use traction control 1 when needed. His example in the video used TC5, agree there is no need to ever use that high of a setting if trying to get to A+. Probably have a hard time getting to B with TC5. But, if driving a car that can be somewhat squirrely, TC1 has a minimal impact on speed and can help prevent problems for me when racing in heavy traffic. Mainly only use in Gr3 and above and only when important for control.
    I dont choose the fastest car in each race. I have a few cars I enjoy driving and try to get the most out of them. My most common choice is Ferarri for Gr3 & Gr4. Almost never the meta cars, though Gr4 458 is often stronger than Gr3 against the field. For me I get more enjoyment from driving certain cars so stick with them. However, Rory is right that the meta cars are better if you're simply chasing speed
    No big disagreements really, but wanted to point out that there is some flexibility in getting to A+

    • @ilari_p
      @ilari_p Місяць тому +10

      I'm not A+ yet, but another point about car selection: some cars are much easier to drive near the limit than others. A good example is the 911 in Gr3: it's a stable car and you can get on the throttle early without worrying about spinning out. I find that I can drive it faster and more confidently than some of the oversteery FR cars, even if the FR car would be faster in the hands of a top driver.

    • @Ledpencil82
      @Ledpencil82 Місяць тому +2

      I agree with your TCS analysis. When I started gt7, I think I just had the default setting which was either TCS 2 or 3. I have slowly weened myself off for most group 4 cars, I use level 1 for GR3, and GR1 and GR2 cars varies depending on the car for me. For setting a lap I have it off completely to get as fast a time as possible. but for the races, I don't have the skill level like Rory and others to take it off completely. Perhaps as I improve I will eventually not use it anymore. But I think it would be a mistake to immediately go from whatever you normally use to zero. I think it is better to gradually lessen it until you don't need it anymore

    • @gseric4721

  • @Sponge1310

    My main issue of getting a higher ranking is mostly that I’m constantly surrounded by idiots online :’) Blocking, braking in a full throttle corner, forcing you off the track, dive bombing and straight up ramming… I guess it can mostly be prevented by trying to qualify as far forward as you can, but I’ve experienced there’s still a high chance of still getting rammed of forced off track even if you start p1… Online racing would be a lot more enjoyable if players had better driving etiquette. Lots of people get so angry when you pass them and often will resort to any dirty trick they can think of to ‘get you back’… especially in the lower ranked lobbies, decency en driving etiquette are often nonexistent.

    • @Ledpencil82
      @Ledpencil82 Місяць тому +3

      I hear you man. I was having the same trouble. I had finally managed to get an A rating, only to have the next week of daily races be a slaughterhouse. I got knocked down to B again and was really frustrated. The week after that was the same story. I had to calm myself and figure out what the problem was. What I came up with: I can't control the other players, but I have some measure control of myself. First, I worked on my qually times so I'd either be a pole sitter or a top 5 time in the race. This meant more study and more time on the track by myself. But it was worth it because the less traffic the less chance I have of being run off the track. Second thing I did was let other people beat themselves silly. Be patient and let folks mess up enough that I can just go clean on by. These two things helped me to finally get to A+. Hope this helps man. Hang in there!

    • @Ledpencil82
      @Ledpencil82 Місяць тому +1

      One other thing I thought of. I do the majority of my racing on Monday and Tuesdays. The skill level of the other drivers is lower as they have had less time to practice. Unless I have an amazing qualifying time and really great race pace, I will usually only do the daily races on those days, and focus on the cup races the rest of the week. I can usually finish in the top half of the grid the majority of the time, which is the key to gaining DR. This is so much harder to do later in the week when all the drivers have been practicing for days and days.

    • @PhpGtr
      @PhpGtr Місяць тому

      @@Ledpencil82 No chance for a guy like me to come anywhere near top half qualifying if I haven't had all week to practice though. It's a terrible catch-22. It REALLY sucks to absolutely have to qualify higher than 5 to get a decent race in, but that's what it is. Which ultimately means a lot less racing for me.

    • @Ledpencil82
      @Ledpencil82 Місяць тому +3

      @@PhpGtr Do you watch lap guides from people like Tidgney and Mistah? It's become religious for me to check them out every week and study. Do you follow other players' ghosts while time trialing? Also has helped me greatly in improving my lap times. Set the ghost to .2-.5 ahead of yours and configure it to reset the ghost's position at every split on the track. If you haven't done that yet, you are missing a whole heap of help that this game offers. It used to take me several days as well to really learn a car/track. As I've done what I've just explained every week for months now, it has taken less and less time. I wouldn't be defeated if I were you just yet!

    Great video Rory and really good tips. I love that you write down the lap on paper as I have an A4 notebook full of data for different circuits and races - braking points, lap times, race start/finish positions, total race time, quali time etc. This helps me no end, so I think it’s great advice. If I can add my own tip, it would be: for your own motivation, unless you’re in the top 100 times, focus on the % difference between your tt time and the fastest tt time rather than the number of seconds you are off. This removes the track lap time variability and enables you to measure your progress week to week regardless of the track. I started out trying to get within 5%, now I’m pushing to be 1.5-2 % consistently. Thanks again for the video - maybe the next one can be about how to use ghosts effectively 😊.

    I've had the game since it came out. Bought a wheel at the same time. It has taken me til just last week (4/28) to achieve A+... over two years. The only reason I made it, was watching Rory and maybe two other guys and picking up on the things he mentioned in this video. Thank you Rory! The only other thing I would mention, is perhaps to be selective with the daily races. I, like many others, have a limited amount of time during the week. I get to play maybe a max of 3-6 hours every week. It isn't enough time for me to master 2 races. So I pick the combo that best suits my ability, and I attack it. Sometimes, I guess wrong. Instead of beating my head against the wall and losing DR, I switch to the other track. Back when we had the 20 laps at Suzuka, I wanted that race so badly, but out of 5-6 tries, I got top 5 one time. Had to switch to daily B. Immediate improvement ensued. Thanks for all the videos Rory!!😊

      @@FatherJHackett Sure thing man. Like this week... Race C is fun to learn with the Formula cars, awesome to time trial. But at that speed too many folks (including myself to some degree) have different breaking points and aren't patient enough. It is a DR and SR nightmare! I'll probably avoid the race itself like the Black Death

    Nice video Rory, I like it when you throw this type of content in the mix..
    100% Agree with all said, only thing I would throw in there is as with Daily C last week where the Evo was the meta.
    Harsher downshifts and 1st work well with rear wheel drives but not so well with 4 wheel drives..
    That's both from real life experience and having a grind last week and hitting 21st global in VR last week.
    Rear wheel drives on harsh downshifts you are basically chucking an anchor out the back and dragging it along with 4WD you loose the front end a bit on turn in as the front is locking up a bit..
    Again on the dropping to 1st even on the hairpin on C last week it created power understeer on exit as the front wheels lost traction..
    But 90% of the time yes as we are in rear wheel drives both are key for rotation..
    All else was spot on advice..
    Nice work 👍

    DR A is as far up as I could go. It truly became stressful at that point, like an additional job besides my actual one: qualifying alone became a serious grind. That, along with the frustration of being constantly punted to oblivion, made me put the game down for a while.

    Another tip even though I'm only A Rank but took me over 1100 races to get there (yes that a ton of racing to achieve it)
    First thing first don't ever quit a race it's never worth it just carry on you never know what going to happen.
    Two me personally I do use the meta cars during the week if there one (or at deep forest I was in WRX and that was nowhere near as fast as Bugatti) and find the quickest time if it too quick find a slower ghost and work from there.
    3 i do watch tidgney guides that come out on a Monday afternoon and there a huge help too especially as he gives the break zones and so on in his track guides and big shout-out to him too massively help me get my break markers too.
    4 as rory said and I fully agree with everything he said too but also just watching him see how he does what he does could also help and if you get stuck you can always ask him or anyone in chat will be happy to give you some pointers.
    5 when you achieved what you want on one account have a second one to handy if you feel like the races aren't your cup of tea you can still do them and not worry about your rank either.
    Most important thing is just have fun end of races if you beat a higher rank driver than yourself you'll gain Dr when the bar is full you'll have achieved a rank increase now some will struggle at first and Will bounce between the ranks (im currently that between b and a rank) but the thing is you'll be one day not bounce between them and stay where you are.
    Final tip do some lobby races with some fast guys learn from them practice defending and attacking them if you bump someone off wait for them trust me you'll gain a ton of respect for Doing so And will make you a much more respected driver in the process.
    Have fun though and hope my tips help someone out too from someone on a PS4 pad 😆 have a wonderful day everyone

    I'm an A+ rated controller driver, so Rory's absolutely right about that. I sometimes even get a top 100 time, though it really depends on car and track combo. There's certain downsides to controller, some are kinda big like tyre wear in FF cars is dramatically worse, and tyre wear in general is slightly worse. You also can't turn in as fast and as hard as wheel drivers, but controller can also be very good for medium speed trail braking type corners. You kinda have to drive around controller sometimes, like using weak ABS, or tuning cars for more oversteer, but it's very competitively viable.

    • @TheRacePig
      @TheRacePig Місяць тому +1

      @@dubj5191 I use the triggers, since I can feel like the ABS activating or breaking traction since they vibrate, it's pretty useful. I don't generally do the ebrake thing since it's so rarely enabled.

      From my experience here are the differences in steering wheel and controller:
      Wheel: Better turning and throttle control, but oversteer is very easy.
      Controller: Less accurate turning and throttle control, but oversteer is no where near as bad and easier to recover.
      I prefer controller bc oddly it feels more realistic. The sim racing setup was so far from actual driving it made the experience more arcade like.

    I will throw this one question at you though Rory, how do you feel about countersteer assist and what ever the other one is," active stability control" if I remember correctly?
    I turn both of these on for daily races as it means I survive unexpected hits from other racers.
    I still usually finish in the top 5 in A+ daily races.
    Happy for you to say negatives in regard to these aids but it works for me , cheers.

    I'm not to A yet, but I'm working on it. I recently got a wheel and pedal set up, and after watching this video, I did a time trial with my controller with my normal stuff. Then after setting the fastest lap I could I switched to the wheel and turned off all of the assist off, same car and track, and kept tying until I beat my best time with the prior settings. Also, I saw on a video to race the Sophie AI, so I've been doing that too, set to the hardest difficultly. Obviously, it really boils down to practice. But those things are helping me adjust without killing my ratings online

      That is so true. Learning that skill is the main factor in getting quicker. It can take 10ths off each corner which in turn can take seconds off a lap time, especially with many corners.

  • @industrial793

    Im an A driver myself. I’ve only got a controller. Often wondered if id be quicker with a steering wheel and pedals, because id surely be smoother on the throttle and at steering? Pro’s have often said the main difference is that controllers mean you kill the tyres quicker on tyre saving races.
    Great video though rory with excellent points. Over the years watching you I have already learnt everything on the video. The main thing i find at the start of the new combos on Mondays is that it csn sometimes take me an hour or 2 just practicing before I can reach optimum pace.
    However id rather sacrifice getting 1st in the meta (and sacrifice an A+ ranking) and use an anti-meta to fight for a win whilst having fun.

      I got to A rated with a controller, felt I had reached my limit, so bought a wheel. 3 months in and I'm no quicker. I found throttle modulation much easier with a controller. I can hit an apex better with a wheel, much more precise transition through high speed corners too, and you can feel understeer much better, so can quickly gauge your limits. But the biggest holdback now is conrer exit, much harder to catch a spin on the wheel too. Thought once I got used to a wheel I would be able to get to A+, but I'm nowhere near yet.

    Rory I've been a bottom ranked D driver who usually qualifies 10-14 in the daily B race and finishes 10-14 in the daily B race. I watched this video last night and then today:
    * I turned off the brake zone indicators
    * I turned off the drive line markers
    * watched a replay of the fastest car on daily group B noting all his braking zones on an excel spreadsheet.
    * qualified while referencing the braking zones until I memorized them
    * qualified 6th! (my best ever gr3 qualify)
