After a 6-month brown belt run, where Ryan won notable tournaments such as the Newaza Challenge and the World Championship, Ryan was awarded his black belt by Garry Tonon in February 2016 in a ceremony supported by the presence of Tom deBlass, Ricardo Almeida and John Danaher - who shared the responsibility of the new belt rank.
In September 2017 Ryan competed at the ADCC World Championship. He took gold in the -88 kg weight category, defeating Dillon Danis, Romulo Barral, Xande Ribeiro and Keenan Cornelius. He also took 2nd place in the absolute division, submitting all his opponents on his way to losing to Felipe Pena in the final.
In September 2018, Ryan competed at the IBJJF Pan No-gi, winning both his weight class and the absolute division all by submission. Ryan led Team Alpha Male's victory in Quintet's 2018 Tournament, Quintet 3. Ryan's submission victories against Josh Barnett and Marcos Souza saw Team Alpha Male advance to the Finals. His submission victories against Craig Jones and Vítor Ribeiro earned his team's ultimate victory in the tournament. He also competed at the IBJJF Nogi Worlds in California, again taking gold in both his weight class and the absolute division.
In September 2019 it was reported that Gordon injured his hand in a freak accident with one of his motorized bikes. The tire became flat and he decided to carry the bike on his shoulders. When he went to hoist the bike on his shoulders the throttle stuck and sucked his hand in between the tire and fender leaving him competing at ADCC with one hand heavily bandaged and injured. Despite the injury he went on to win the -99 kg division. He beat Ben Hodgkinson, Tim Spriggs, Lucas Barbosa and Vinicius Ferreira. He would then move on the absolute division where he would claim gold following victories over Pedro Marinho, Garry Tonon, Lachlan Giles and Marcus Buchecha Almeida.[15]
2020
Ryan was forced to withdraw from a superfight set for July 31, 2020, after contracting COVID-19.[16] On October 2, 2020, Ryan faced fellow ADCC 2019 World Champion Matheus Diniz and defeated him via Heelhook approximately halfway through a thirty-minute submission-only match.[17]
Ryan decided late in 2020 that he would leave the New Jersey area and move to Puerto Rico with his coach, John Danaher, and several members of his team to open up their own gym.He revealed in December 2020, that the new gym had a tentative opening date of March 2021.
On March 22, 2021, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed that Ryan had signed a contract with the promotion to compete in grappling, as well as mixed martial arts if he wished to.[20] He was scheduled to make his promotional debut in a grappling match against multiple-times ONE Lightweight World Champion (MMA) Shinya Aoki on August 27, 2021.[21] Ryan announced on May 21 that he was at least momentarily retiring from competitive grappling due to his long-time Gastroparesis condition, as it had worsened throughout the years, and looks forward to taking care of his health. As confirmed from sources, Gordon Ryan is no longer under One Championship contract.
In July 2021, it was announced that Danaher Death Squad had split up and Ryan will be opening his own academy in Austin, Texas.
In September 2022, Gordon competed at ADCC both in the +99kg division and in the superfight against André Galvão. It was the first time in the history of ADCC that a competitor that was scheduled to do the superfight also fought at a weight division. Gordon proceeded to clear his weight class with victories over Heikki Jussila, Victor Hugo, Roosevelt Sousa and Nick Rodriguez to win gold. He also had the fastest submission in the history of ADCC against Roosevelt Sousa, where he submitted Sousa via outside heel hook in 11 seconds. Later that weekend, Ryan faced Galvão in a highly anticipated match in grappling history and won via rear naked choke. Gordon became the first grappler in ADCC history to become champion in three different weight classes and he defeated André Galvão, who had not lost a match since 2017.
On December 15, 2022, Ryan was scheduled to compete against Vinny Magalhães in the main event of UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3. Magalhães withdrew from the event on short notice and was replaced by Ryan's former teammate Nick Rodriguez. Ryan went on to win the match by fastest escape time in EBI overtime.
Rousimar "Toquinho" Palhares ( Dores do Indaiá , February 26 , 1980 ) is a Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter , currently suspended in the World Series of Fighting , where he is the former champion of the Welterweight category , Toquinho lost his belt in 04/08/2015 after holding a submission after the opponent would have already shown withdrawal in his last fight. Toquinho has also fought in the UFC .

I love the commentary. It's like a tennis match.
Watching Gordon Ryan use his legs as a bait tactic to take Palhares's back was very clever
Agree
For those of us who aren't jiujitsu experts, could you explain what Ryan was doing to defend against Palhares's leg locks? Did Palhares ever get close to putting him in a threatening position?
@@jamesromero9520 not expert but my thought: he had try but fail due to ryan is too big & powerful
@@ikigai47probably because Palhares knew Gordon wouldn’t take any of that shit. Palhares likely saw Gordon was a big guy, bigger than some of the guys he had faced before, and knew that using the tactic he usually does would only put him in more trouble.
@@jackmule1572 thats really not so relevant. It's mostly technique, gordon just knew how to defend leg locks, better yet he knows how to avoid being put in a position where he's in any danger in the first place
The most interesting thing about this video is to watch how hard the commentators are trying to come up with something to say.
Real MVPs of the match.
I guess they didn't want to do something stupid... Like saying "MPV', instead of "MVP".
They're brazilian, so it's even harder to come up with somebullshit in a foreign language.
I tapped... the pause button, but Palhares kept going... now I cant walk.
Palmahares Psychopath... Submited!
God damn you 🤣
The aggravating and painful face cranks towards the end must have been extremely satisfying to watch for those who had their ankles injured by Palhares.
Knees as well. He blew up several knees of MMA fighters by not releasing his lock after they tapped.

Oh shit I didn’t know that.

While in the ufc palhares went on the ground with belcher, got schooled then fed elbows to the face. He can’t intentionally break your ankle if he is unconscious.
Yeah, F* that guy. He messed up multiple fighters careers. I'll never get tired of watching him get F*d up.
That was a diamond that night 👏 Thank yoh Alan Belcher. Didn't Alan yell I schooled that motherfucker to the camera?
God damn he was defending that rear naked choke like a savage, even better than galvao. Those couple minutes of defending were like when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object
I thought it was a great match....to keep control of the back...and to not get choked...great match
It’s not bad, some good shit happening, but damn, it takes him less than 2 minutes to take the back and the rest of the match he was in zero trouble just attacking until he gets the win. This was never close.
@@benkelly7182 Well yeah that’s the mind of John Danaher for ya
Hard to get a choke on both guys, but Gordon's setup and rear naked evolved 100 times since this match. Not exactly good comparison.
The reason Rousimar did better (and the major failure of GR in this match) is that Gordon didnt grind him down to start. Galvao was exhausted and morally defeated by the time he was submitted. Palhares was fresh and happy at the end.
Solid strategy against Palhares; just give him a hug. Haven’t seen the dude smile like that for a while. He clearly wasn’t hugged enough as a child. That’s why he clings to people’s feet so much. Please don’t show this message to him, I like walking.
😂😂😂😂😂
Body triangles are painful. I will never understand how these guys can survive for 15 minutes with that kind of the pressure.
Their core strength is unreal...lots of vitamins
@@chrisgrady4466so that's why Vitamin Water sells so much.... All the BJJ guys are buying it out.
BS this is definitely great stuff especially from Ryan. Love watching him & can’t wait to see him demolish another one.
Toquinho was wonderful!!! Most fighters give up when They are caught in a dominant position. But know how control in worse case scenarium is the bestest ever in jiu jitsu.
If someone cath you and does not submmitt you especially in the best position. You wasnt defeated at all.
Congratulations toquinho❤
He was held in possibly the worst position in grappling for the vast majority of the match. Definitely defeated

Resistencia muscular de otro nivel seguro.
He’s so juiced he could still be holding on
Watched for like 2m and thought, yea there is now way he gets out of this back mount. Fast forward, yup just what I expected. Don't let Gordon take your back.
Same here
I'm honestly impressed he was able to defend that whole time, considering Paul Harris hasn't really been a pure BJJ guy in years and Gordon was really smashing top competition at this time

🇧🇷 SOU LEIGO, MAS... 🇧🇷
Concordo plenamente, pois a lua ficou chata.

Casually ignorant or a historical fact ? If that's the same dude I'm thinking he didn't let his opponent tap out and held on longer
He got kicked out of mma for it. He's done it atleast 5 times.

Grappling! The beast with two backs.
Commentary is like pbs and golf.
Gordon is like a Hollywood movie serial killer, slowly chasing down his prey to the kill.
If I remember correctly, Gordon Ryan's hand was broken during this match (and also during 2019 ADCC). How broken? I don't know, but it was taped a lot during ADCC. Perhaps broken is an exaggeration (I think), but it was at least in serious pain. I think I heard him on some podcast (perhaps it was Rogan?) say that he couldn't set up the strangle because of that. I do believe him for two reasons. 1) He's had an otherwise flawless record from the back against much more decorated grapplers, 2) I've also had my hand injured and was noticeably less effective at setting up the strangle from the back.
He got it trapped in a bike chain I think from memory
Perhaps
It wasn't broken. Your being dramatic 😱
@@ROCEMPOWERMENTwell then good thing he mentioned he doesn't know how broken and also mentioned he thinks broken was a exaggerating lol

Palhares is a very good grappler, especially for a UFC fighter. Its a shame he uses that advantage to destroy peoples knees
Unfortunately for him, gordon is not just another grappler
Good competition, respect for each other. Nice
when was this match?
I really would like to see Ricardo Arona in his best moment against Gordon Ryan. They are probably the best grapplers in the history.
But wasn't smart enough to let go of rampage and took the ride of his life
New book out called "Surviving Ryan" by Palhares soon
Geez, I wonder why nobody watches jiu-jitsu competitions. They're so exciting. (He said very sarcastically.)
Is attacking the body triangle by rolling toward the extended leg side and stepping over opponents leg to bridge into hyper-extending the ankle under the knee not a thing at their level? It's been a long time since I trained but that was my best body triangle defence way back when… I remember always being wary to switch sides the triangle was on when in the dominant position
Been practicing judo, wrestling, bjj, sambo, for 50 years (61 stated at 11), and I really appreciate the technique and strategy, but this format! Like watching paint dry!

Im not really into grappling comming from freestyle wrestling backround. But i think after certain time from a position like 2 minutes or something and nothing happened both should stand up. Aswell the entire game should shift from ground more to the stand up game cause it would be more realistic. what means the best jiu jitsu game when you cant even bring a little girl down. The new game should be like a takedown 4 points when both land on the ground and 2 minute's nothing happen both should go up. You know something like that.
There are different rulesets in bjj. OBI closer to what you are talking about
@@maximshvedov2102I'm not really into grappling so I don't know all different rulesets I just wanna learn some submission that's why i visit no gi grappling from time to time. everybody is so weak, they barely can sweep me😂 grappler should start some wrestling to get a little tough!
@@Godmysheperd it's a different game in BJJ. If you did some wrestling at school or college, you have more experience and skills than 95% of hobbyists who started in BJJ. Find somebody who does BJJ for long time, and it will be a different game :)
yeah I agree, the rules should give you a few minutes to work & try for a sub, but after 3 minutes or so of not getting a choke, armbar, etc, the ref should break it up. The fans are a big part of how they can afford 2 elite grapplers like that.
No. Once you tgurn it into Judo, then the ground game goes away. The ground game being the labaratory is what makes BJJ elite on the ground. You're proposing a system that made Judo weaker on the ground.
