System of a Down was formed in the 90's in California by 4 Armenian Americans... Serj (vocals), Daron (guitar + vocals), Shavo (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums) ... Despite being a heavy band, the singer Serj was never much of a heavy metal fan... In their club days, the band mixed punk rock w/ thrash metal and Mediterranean music to give S.O.A.D an unpredictable musical delivery. Famed producer Rick Rubin discovered System of a Down in a club and was impressed how unique they looked and sounded around 1997... he signed the band to his American Recordings label and produced their 1998 self-titled debut and put them on tour opening for Slayer... Then, System of a Down scored a spot on Ozzy's Ozzfest '98 tour that summer... They did so well that both them and Slayer were booked for the Ozzfest '99 tour (Black Sabbath & Rob Zombie were the main headliners), and System of a Down's first album sold gold (half million copies) in the US on that run. In 2001, System of a Down released their 2nd album 'Toxicity' which charted at #1... a free concertin Hollywood to promote the release had to be cancelled because too many fans showed up and ended up rioting... The band toured w/ Slipknot and Rammstein the the fall of '01 and were a headlining band by 2002 as 'Toxicity' sold 6x platinum ( 3x more than the debut album that sold 2x platinum in the US)... A 3rd album was released in 2002 as simply "Steal this album!" w/ little promotion (and no album cover) and still sold platinum... System of a Down would go on to co-headline Ozzfest 2002 and Ozzfest 2006 Unfortunately, creative differences between Serj and Daron as they recorded 2 albums started to take a toll... Daron would end up singing lead on songs that Serj would not do... The 'Mesmerize' album was released in 2005 and sold 2x platinum... followed by the accompanying album 'Hypnotize' (which sold platinum)... Those would be the last albums by System of a Down... The band took a break in 2007 after Ozzfest '06. Serj Tankian would go on to release solo records, starting w/ 'Elect the dead' in 2007... Daron Malakian would record new music as Scars on Broadway in 2008... System of a Down would reunite to tour occasionally, but their only new music were 2 songs ('Genocidal humanoidz'... and 'Protect the land') released to raise funds and awareness to help their 2nd homeland of Armenia that was embroiled in a brutal war w/ Azerbaijan.
SOAD is one of the best bands to ever exist. amazing vocals and instrumentals. they are from armenia, but moved to the us as kids. they don't have a bad track but i recommend BYOB, prison song, or any song off their first (self titled) album. but literallly any song from them is worth a listen! i love the reactions and they are very genuine. I hope to see more SOAD on your channel!
They are wonderful and unique! Good TL;DR on their history. I'd add Sugar, Question!, and maybe Ego Brain just to throw in some other SOAD songs I think are impactful. I hope to see more SOAD reactions as well!
First time I hear someone in a reaction giving Serj’s voice the spot on description. Church voice as you mentioned, is due to the cultural influence from the Armenian background that actually turns the whole band’s work into a trademark. You can just look up any eastern church singing and you’d hear the similarities.
I think you would REALLY really love that album, a complete masterpiece & now I’m definitely going to listen to that album on my way home from work! You got me on a SOAD mood 😅🔥
One thing I've always loved about his sound, is that he can go from heavy metal screaming to opera to lullaby. His range and the way he glides between it all is still so impressive
Sugar, Spiders, Boom!, Forest, ATWA, Streamline, Suite-Pee, Inner Vision, Nuguns, Science, Aerials, Prison Song, B.Y.O.B., Hypnotize, these are just a few of my favorite SOAD songs. Enjoy!
i was eleven years old when i was introduced to system of a down and when they came out in with their album in 2001. they pretty much made me get into this type of music and from then ive always been a fan. this is a masterpiece
It’s been a while since I’ve listened to one of your reactions. I’ve forgotten how much I like your energy, your enthusiasm, your choice of music and your accent. Great review, thanks for the song and putting a smile on my face 👍🏻
Please please please… react to “BYOB”, “Chop Suey” and “Question,” and Watching to the paralele jobs for Serj Tankian(the vocal)… this guy sing ophera in a special show with a orchestra! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Serj is a special kind of vocalist. Daron's guitar and support vocals are great too. The sound of System Of A Down is S.O.A.D. and their genre is S.O.A.D. in the style of S.O.A.D.
One of the best songs of theirs to analyze as a singer would probably be 'Question!' It has about everything...but honestly with SOAD, every song is a painting with a message.
System of a Down rompers - 'Sugar'... 'Chopsuey!'... 'P.L.U.C.K.'... 'Question?'... 'Ariels'... 'Boom!'... 'Know'... 'Prison song'... 'B.Y.O.B'... 'Hypnotize'...🤘🤘🔥🔥
Some underrated soad gems that not a lot of people have reacted to are Streamline, Thetawaves and, Innervision. They also do some covers that are Imo way better than the originals like Metro and Snowblind.
If you don't know: try to listen to the first SOAD Album... I will remember all my life the first time, the discovery of this unique and incredible bomb that was SOAD It's a band to listen to chronologically I think Peace
A different band and song, but, “Fascination Street” by The Cure has absolutely one of the coolest bass lines of all time in my opinion. It’s super-prominent in the song, central to it, and possibly the greatest bass line I have ever heard.
My kid turned me on to SOAD. She had picked up through her childhood that I 1. loved metal, and 2. loved intense vocals. Lots of Metallica, Led Zep, and a good dose of opera in the house. We were on a long road trip, and she said, "Hey, mom, check this out". She nailed it. Loved and devoured SOAD.
Queremos rooooooooooooock!!
The "sick" parts of singing technique is a folk style used a lot in all countries of eastern europe and some middle asian contries, not sure about others
Aunque hayan detractores.
chop suey, FOREST (personal favorite - how the same pattern keeps going higher over time), suggestions, nuguns, spiders, suite pee, sad statue, questions.... i'm going to stop because here is the thing one thing i really truly despise about fan bases is that there will always be someone that will come along invariably and state "this band doesn't have a bad song".... of course, there is no such band.... but here is what i will say, of my top 10 favorite bands (of which soad is one, but probably not NUMBER ONE) the do indeed have the HIGHEST PERCENTAGE of their discography to be very good to great songs... listenable songs"... like some of my MOST favorite bands, i have to say you can't listen to more than HALF the songs.... soad, of all the bands i've ever heard, has the MOST good songs as a proportion of their catalogue.... they have multiple ENTIRE albums where i don't have to skip songs
Should check out a band called Hed pe, they're metal, punk music infused with Hip Hop. Songs I suggest are Feel Good(collab with Serj from SOAD), Renegade, Suffa, Ground or Killing Time. Thx & keep the great reactions coming.
The church element is their Armenian musical and ethnical background, which is unique due to their chanting tradition, part of orthodox church music.A genre totally unknown to western music, and this is the reason you can't describe it..😂
when you said his voice almost reminded you of a church you're probably not far off 😂😂 they use a lot of singing techniques from traditional armenian music and armenian priests definitely sing in a similar way! (also just common to a lot of eastern orthodox churches I think)
more SOAD is always good... they are super crossover band... huge range of songs... church comment maybe not totally off... you can hear a little bit of their traditional armenian music roots in their music... their music always sounded like 10% eastern to me... it has a little bit old feeling in that... I wouldnt call it prog rock - but they labeled it this way because its really impossible to slap a label on SOAD.

Nice summary of their history! 👏🏻
Awesome summary it was nice read
You can hear all the Toxicity album, its a masterpiece...

BYOB Yeahhh!

Man the lyrics are still on point even at this crazy times
"I'm so confused"
Yeah, you know nothing yet, go into the SOAD rabbit hole
First time I hear someone in a reaction giving Serj’s voice the spot on description. Church voice as you mentioned, is due to the cultural influence from the Armenian background that actually turns the whole band’s work into a trademark.
You can just look up any eastern church singing and you’d hear the similarities.
this my favorite band, just the best music.
Seen them in concert too, it was amazing.
I think you would REALLY really love that album, a complete masterpiece & now I’m definitely going to listen to that album on my way home from work! You got me on a SOAD mood 😅🔥

All of yours, plus Lost in Hollywood
If I had to give another S.O.A.D. suggestion, I'd go with "Spiders". It's got some of my favorite vocal segments from Serj and a pretty awesome solo.
For more essential S.O.A.D. tunes you should check out "Sugar", "Spiders", and "Airials".
yES, Yes and yEs, PerFect choices! But whO else? Deftone "My Own Summer", "Knife party" ? Tool "Lateralus", "Schism" my fav " AEnema"? 😝🤘
Don't forget B.Y.O.B
A awesome song by System of the down and love that this was reacted on this great channel😘❤️🤘🤘
In the 90's the rock have a great chance, some movements appear, grunge, industrial, rap+rock is a great fussion
And don't forget ska and even swing.
Mi banda favorita de la vida. Los escucho desde que tenía 14 años (actualmente tengo 31) ❤😊🤟🏼

They headlined the festival I saw 3 weeks ago in Las Vegas. Bucket list updated. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Their entire debut album (self titled) is absolutely incredible. ❤ love the reaction
Serj is a special kind of vocalist.
Daron's guitar and support vocals are great too.
The sound of System Of A Down is S.O.A.D. and their genre is S.O.A.D. in the style of S.O.A.D.
CHOP SUEY NEXT
No, byob first

No she's like heroin. No one ever reacts to this fxkin song

tienes mucho que descubrir con system of a down, una de las bandas mas importantes de lo 90 y 2000
One of the best songs of theirs to analyze as a singer would probably be 'Question!'
It has about everything...but honestly with SOAD, every song is a painting with a message.
Also, welcome to System of a Down. No joke, you're in for a heck of a treat with this one. :) Cheers 🍻
Hands down my favourite first reaction to Toxicity. If there were a hall of fame for first reactions, your reaction would be inducted. Thanks, Millie!
need more reactions to this band!
System of a Down rompers - 'Sugar'... 'Chopsuey!'... 'P.L.U.C.K.'... 'Question?'... 'Ariels'... 'Boom!'... 'Know'... 'Prison song'... 'B.Y.O.B'... 'Hypnotize'...🤘🤘🔥🔥
Always use SOAD song as my alarm clock for wakeup to school in early 2000s.Time flies so fast🥱.
Toxicity is my alarm currently 😂
I love what you did to your mic lol, it looks so cute and pretty, unique :)
essa banda é sensacional eu adoro é uma das minhas preferidas

DISORDER DISORDER DISORDER 🗿💀👀
That ending. Great example to define “Heavy”. You probably knew that, but yeah.
“This is heavy!”
*sigh*
*recommends “to the hellfire” one take vocal track by will Ramos*
Question is less popular but most interesting i think
You really need to do BYOB too and Chop Suey
chop suey, FOREST (personal favorite - how the same pattern keeps going higher over time), suggestions, nuguns, spiders, suite pee, sad statue, questions.... i'm going to stop because here is the thing
one thing i really truly despise about fan bases is that there will always be someone that will come along invariably and state "this band doesn't have a bad song".... of course, there is no such band.... but here is what i will say, of my top 10 favorite bands (of which soad is one, but probably not NUMBER ONE) the do indeed have the HIGHEST PERCENTAGE of their discography to be very good to great songs... listenable songs"... like some of my MOST favorite bands, i have to say you can't listen to more than HALF the songs.... soad, of all the bands i've ever heard, has the MOST good songs as a proportion of their catalogue.... they have multiple ENTIRE albums where i don't have to skip songs
Yes, it can be religious. They are descendants of Eastern Block Europeans. And they use that heritage in their music.
I'm going on a limb here ... Imo the greatest band of the 2000's. Bar none. Listen to everything by them. 😊
You have to do B.Y.O.B next!!!
4:00 Yes. It's church singing mixed with Armenian folk songs. Plus industrial rock.
Chop Suey! Deer Dance! Metro! Sugar!
I want this ending in a loop never-ending ❤
you should listen to something from the first album
God i feel old
❤❤❤❤👍👍👍
TL,DR reaction: "Like, Like, Like, Heavy, Heavy, Sick, Like, Sick, Like Heavy, Like, Sick!"🤣
You need to hear BYOB. It's the pinnacle of SOAD.
1:43 » lol 😆😆😅
You need to listen to the three sisters from Mexico... The Warning. You like the bass guitar...start with Dust to Dust.
next: Chop Suey!
Should check out a band called Hed pe, they're metal, punk music infused with Hip Hop. Songs I suggest are Feel Good(collab with Serj from SOAD), Renegade, Suffa, Ground or Killing Time. Thx & keep the great reactions coming.
The church element is their Armenian musical and ethnical background, which is unique due to their chanting tradition, part of orthodox church music.A genre totally unknown to western music, and this is the reason you can't describe it..😂
MANDALE UN ABRAZO A BRASIL 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
You are right about church music (well spotted) - it’s similar to Armenian church music in some parts (well spotted)
Millie looking Super Cute today!
Questions next
mantap
SOAD - Aerials :)
All sit down and pray to System Gods
yes. church music makes a lot sense. you'll get that in Chop Suey more.
you are pretty!!
"AERIALS" NETX PLEASE
when you said his voice almost reminded you of a church you're probably not far off 😂😂 they use a lot of singing techniques from traditional armenian music and armenian priests definitely sing in a similar way! (also just common to a lot of eastern orthodox churches I think)

For me they are 2000 nu metal breed, and they have their originality of culture and singing style of Armenian traditional folks melody.
You might like some other 90's bands.. I'd highly recommend One Minute Silence - Holy man..
traducelo para los que no hablamos ingles por favor!!
