I don’t know. To me it leaves me hopeful because Renton has to go through such terrible things so that he finally decides to leave bad habits (and bad friends) behind in the hopes of starting fresh. The ending is ambiguous, you don’t know if Renton found happiness, but we all hope, just like he does, that he will.
