  • Today we take a look back at my Ford 4.6 2V Mod Motor roots and how the ‪@trickflow‬ 2V head changed the game!
    in 2009 we were able to get our hands on one of the first pairs of the
    of these heads before they were even put on the market and right out of the gate we knew that they were a winner! we went on to be the fastest 2v car in the country and won the first 2 Mod Motor Nationals with our Nitrous combo! ‪@andrewlavender08‬ with his turbo combo surpassed us and took the belt and continued the success into the 4's in the 1/8th mile!
    Dont Forget that ‪@DavidVizard‬ will be a very in depth technical video on these cylinder heads in the next few days! you don't want to miss this one..

      @neg4t1vezer04 3v plugs get stuck in the head from corrosion. They break off directly where the probe shank meets the thread. 2v heads are the plug poppers.

    Nice piece and more to come! Thank you Andy for bringing us "older-timers" up to date with the latest technology. Though the 4.6 2 valve may have lacked some grunt as delivered it did offer reliability and longevity. Ford haters out there say recent and current Ford engines are unreliable compared to competitors production offerings. WRONG. Many 4.6 2-V's are still on the road today and running with well over 300K original miles. I for one love my daily driver decommissioned 2004 P71 Crown Vic!

    Andy, I hope you and David find a way someday to put the 4.6/5.4/6.8 3-valve heads on the flow bench to see what’s going on there. Two out of three of those engines don’t have the synchronizer problem and the 5.4 can be fixed.
    There’s a lot of those engines floating around. If they were available in the 1950’s or 60’s people would be running them at Indy.

    Does 3 valve have anything on 2 valve in practice or is it better to jump straight from 2 to 4? Since you know Mr. Vizard, could you ask him if it's possible to design a 3-valve system that is superior to 2-valve and verging on 4-valve? IE, is it possible to run something similar to polyquad? Furthermore, on paper, I originally thought 3 valves could get within 10% of the valve area of a 4-valve, but that was before factoring in a spark plug hole.
    After I did that, 3-valves were barely above a 2-valve on the same bore. However, if one were to use a twin-spark design with the spark plugs below the intake valves and adjacent to the exhaust valve, you could theoretically use the configuration I originally had on paper, putting 3 valves VERY close to a 4-valve setup in terms of total potential valve area.
    Just food for thought. If Trick could do something like that with custom 3-valve heads, we could see Coyotes being dethroned by their older cousins. But even more of a pipe dream, we could see pushrod engines somehow retrofitted with 3-valve heads to bring them into 4-valve performance territory. Another upside to 3-valves based on the (admittedly limited) ones I've heard is that engines with only 1 exhaust valve tend to have a deeper, smoother exhaust note.

    I note that you and D.V. have ported the head. It is a pet peeve of mine that the cylinder head manufacturers send out their product with a requirement to port them to get the best performance. What my thought is, is to get a set of prototype heads, before making a production run, port them for the very best airflow and performance, and then send them back to the company. The company then would take the heads, revise their molds to incorporate the mods the porter did, and then start production runs. The way it is now, a set of aftermarket heads costs $2500(+), then it costs an additional $1700-2000 in porting costs for a total investment by the buyer of $4200-4500. If they would take the time at the design and foundry level to put out the very best product that the mind of man could come up with, it would be a great help to buyers of the product. Changes at the foundry level are minimal to the manufacturer. For instance, I bought a set of aftermarket heads for $2800, then there was a combination of airflow work and port grinding for another $1800, for an investment by me of $4600, when, if the company had taken the time to "pre-flow" the heads my cost would have been just $2800 to maybe $3000 at the most. Every head test I've read, the first thing a buyer has to do is get them ported to compensate for the failure of the manufacturer to produce its best possible product on the go-in.

    I just acquired one. Is there any basic stuff I can do to pick up power without making any bolt-on changes? I don't need a lot of power but 300 would be nice with stock parts. Might do cams if I have to but that's really the only mod aside from a carbureted intake I'd like to do. I'm gonna get some long tube headers too because the engine didn't come with exhaust manifolds.

    I've got a 4.6l 2v question for you Andy. I'm building budget 4.6 for my 92 crown vic, I'd like to know how big an intake valve I can put into a PI head without having to cut a stock flat top piston. I'm using Cushman stage 2 PI NA cams (you recommended them to me a long time ago but I haven't done anything with them because only just recently did my Vic jr. intake show up that I had on back order for over a year) and I'm doing my own port work on the heads. I won't be starting work on the engine in earnest until after the Mid America Shelby Meet (too much other prep work).

    • @UnityMotorSportsGarage
      @UnityMotorSportsGarage  Рік тому

      John that would really depend on the shortblock you are using. A non-pi piston has a 11cc dish vs the PI piston of 17cc dish and the first place the valve makes contact with the piston is on the edge of the dish.. If it were me I would mock it up and check it to be safe because with the Cushman cams the PTV clearance is on the smaller side..
      Sorry i can give an exact answer but I hope this helps

      @@UnityMotorSportsGarage Thanks Andy! The short block will is from a 96 cobra, I'll be installing a new set of gen 2 (2015 up) Coyote rods and most likely flat top pistons out of an old Navigator engine (I'm a little undecided on that part, I might end up using the 3cc dish pistons out of the 4v 4.6). By the sounds of it I might be cutting valve reliefs anyways so perhaps my best bet is to shove in the biggest intake valve I can fit.

    Honestly those Trick Flows are great...but it sucks nobody makes a head except them. 1 brand or ported stocks and that's the end. I still have my 02 GT trying to make power and there's very little help when it comes to heads, Trick Flows or nothing. And a set with cams is 4500 or so..which is nuts. You may as well motor swap for something (as bad as I hate to say it) better than a 2 valve. Single turbo the stock motor for a grand with some fuel system upgrades and forget heads with a 2v if you ask me. It's the only way you're affordably making power. Or go drop 10k in a 2 valve to make 400hp...it's up to you
