@@lee-johnson good to know. This one has never had a hybrid battery. A friend of mine has had success replacing the cells in the hybrid battery before. I may try that when the time comes.
I'm glad this video popped up 5 days after doing this job. I did blindly replace the 100 uf with a 220 uf as other videos suggested. The orig cap did measure 100 uf so I was puzzled. Your video explains why. If I had seen your video I would have blindly replaced the 10 uf cap too I suppose. I used a standard cap and cut the legs short and bent the ends 90 to make little feet. It was very easy to solder and was a very sturdy result. What was funny is that the center speaker was disconnected. Then one of the black screws holding the black meter housing down was missing. My conclusion is that the unit had already been replaced once, and was failing again.
Do not take surface mounts off like that. You will pull the pads up. Take a pair of sharp nippers and cut a the base and then unsolder each leg. The lower the cap rating the higher the esr will be. That’s why the yellow on the cap wizard says compare. You can literally warm the caps in your hand and the esr will read different.
I’ve actually done this repair before and you are right… It is not easy. I must commend you on your excellent camera work. No, I’m not being sarcastic that must’ve been difficult to get the right shot and it seems like you did. good job
Just a caution for those that want to apply what's here to other situations. Many modern voltage regulators require capacitors with a specific minimum and maximum ESR. Replacing these with something too low or too high will cause them not to work properly. Also, these PCBs are almost certainly assembled using lead-free solder. If you're in North America and used to leaded solder, you will need a slightly hotter iron than you're used to remove the parts.
Thanks, for this. I just got a 07 prius and it's starting to have this issue. Time to get the rework station out and plan a repair. Also thanks for listening the parts I will get them on order first.
My repair works perfectly. But, it seems that the new cap overrides the brightness control switch. No problem for me 'tho. I'll be eighty in 5 months God willing. This was a very satisfying little romp.
24:00 In cramped spaces like this I tend to evaluate if using leaded components is an option. Cutting, bending and shaping the leads gets me to where I can keep the leads very short but also at best access the SMD solder pads from the top or any angle, so I dont need to go at them from crooked angles andvmelting my solder iron tip into the plastic baseplate of the SMD cap. There is almost always room to place caps flat on the board or other components if need be and tack them down with silicone for vibration protection. After all even the name brand caps dont seem to last as long as they used to. And you can only twist off SMD caps so often until the pad comes off with it,- especially if hand soldered with an iron and adequate amounts of solder on the joint.
I did my Prius I only replaced the capacitor is 109 because only read 50 when I texted anyways awesome video next time I do one I replaced all 3 capacitor 😅
Great video. I was wondering instead of surface mount capacitor, will these work? Radial Electrolytic Capacitor, 220uF, 10V and Radial Electrolytic Capacitor, 220uF, 16V? Thank you.
Hello thank you for your video.I have prius 2 nd generation. The Problem is when i go to the gass station when put the fuel to the tank of car it's reject.(by the sorry my english)and also the fuel gauge shows in correct what should be reasons?thank you
I'm very late to this reply. But the likely issue for being hard to fuel and the pump clicking off is the tank itself. On the 2nd Gen prius the tanks had a bladder inside them that hardened with time. It creates a problem with fueling and makes the gas gauge not read to the full mark any longer.
On my 2006 Prius,my left turn signal, high beam light, and parking/emergency brake lights don't display. However, they are all functional. What do you think is the issue?
Re the replacement capacitors from Digikey, very few indicate ESR values that are in stock. Is the low ESR critical? There’s a lot in stock that do not have an ESR value. BTW, all three smd caps read normal in circuit uFd values but I don’t have a way to check ESR
Any replacement will be better than whats in there. If the replacements have an ESR value, lower is better. Old caps can read capacitance within range, but have high ESR. If you are measuring in circuit without a proper tester, you'll get false values.
@@mechtrician1 I replaced the 10,100,330 ufd (underneath gear select part of display)with low esr caps, still no display. My symptoms are a little different than most I read online (the red door open light on far left works fine) just the blue readout section is blank. Any other suggestions on parts to check/replace? Thanks for your help!
word on the street has it that Toyota put the wrong capacity capacitor on and is should be a 200 instead of a 100 which is why it was a factory recall and free till 2016
Toyota rarely recalls anything, even if it involves safety issues, such as braking system problems. Instead they have extended warranties (service bulletins) which typically expire to the 8th year of use. After that, it's back to UA-cam. 😉
Thanks for your update@@normfromga Sorry they avoid life threatening updates at any time. especially the way that this particular issue affects the way the car operates and is so Dangerous. they are leaving themselves open for many lawsuits that could be expensive considering their lackadaisical attitude.
@@normfromga That is absolutely incorrect! Toyota does more safety recalls than ANYONE and they are very proactive when a safety issue is present. Service bulletins and ENHANCED warranty are 2 very different things. Yes, Toyota does in fact have a lot of enhanced warranties, and that should be commended considering how many manufacturers tell customers to go pound sand. Cars were not meant to last forever. DUH
Great Video!, I did everything and it works but i now have an air bag light. From what i recall, there was 1 airbag plug (yellow) we disconnected. I double check connection it was fully seated. I went into diagnose screen by connecting pin 4 and 13 on the OBDii. there was some BS code that did not involve air bags. I cleared it anyways . it did not clear red air bag light. Thank you Sir. I just replaced the three caps and it works like a champ. 280,000 miles on my 05. This video helped a lot!
Wow 280,000. Have you had to do a hybrid battery?
@@mechtrician1 yes. Twice and one of those failed, but they warranted it. The last one I ordered it and installed myself.

And some heat resistant tape and I was praying that the components pad was not cracked or lifted
FLux capacitor? GREAT SCOTT!!
As a novice, I dont know the difference. How does it make it easier? Does that just keep the tip clean?
Hi,
Did you fix the dimming issue? Are you happy with the capacitors you chose?
Thanks
Nice and very informative video.
Great video , thank you.
Can you PLEASE, provide the part numbers on the caps?
Thank for your time ,

Can you explain how you were able to disconnect the airbag cable from the clip? That is how it is attached in my 2007 and I cannot figure it out.
I had to fiddle with it I remember that. I used a very small flat blade to get the clip to release. It’s some kind of high integrity lock.
Do need to replace 100uf 16v to 200uf 16v? Or just replace same as 100uf 16?
The same is fine. Doubling the value probably won’t hurt but it’s not necessary.
Great info potential business opportunity
heard you mention "Hollywood". is it the SoCal one? if so, would you fix it on my Prius 2007? willing to pay for parts and labor and more.
