Pitbull is really a category, not a specific breed. But all of the breeds in that category are predisposed to aggression, no doubt. Their original job was bull and bear baiting, as you said. Pitbulls were crossed with terriers to create a dog that has the mastiff/pitbull's strength, and the terrier's tenacity and ferociousness.
Many, many pitbull lines have histories of breeding for aggression, whether for bull baiting or dog fighting. These are usually the dogs you can find in shelters.
Like you disscused, predisposition does not necessitate the behavior actually occuring. Our genes are the baseline, and our upbringing and environment push or pull from or towards that to which we're predisposed for.
The problem with pitbulls is that they're not easy dogs, and they're not for the first time owner. And when things go wrong, they go *really* wrong. Again, they're as powerful as mastiffs, and as tenacious as terriers. They have a lot of prey drive and high energy.
So we have: dogs that are predisposed to aggression + powerful high energy + shelters having an abundance of them and paring them to owners who aren't ready for them yet = danger. Even if you have owners who know what they're doing, that predisposition makes them far more dangerous than your every day German Shepherd.
Also, you seem to have taken most of this video out of this article: love-a-bull.org/resources/the-history-of-pit-bulls/. You should probably credit them. I also couldnt verify the claim that American Pitbulls were herding dogs.

The American Pit bull terrier isn’t an umbrella term, it’s a specific breed bred for an extremely specific purpose of dog fighting, encompassing the strength of larger bull terriers with the agility speed and tentation of a terrier, derived from Bull terriers. There are many dogs bred from the APBT such as the american staffordshire bull terrier, bred to have similar looks of the APBT without the incredible drive and AA of their working counterparts. Other than that ur point is accurate.

No mention of physics and anatomy here. Wide mouth dogs have higher bite force. Larger dogs have higher bite force. Chihuahuas and weiner dogs bite often but those are rarely life changing events. When a large size wide mouth dog (like the maligned bully xl) bites it may be the end of having a face.

    It’s how they’re raised…
We could say that about tigers, chimpanzees, bears, hippos, crocodiles, and more.
The blatant problem is the capacity for violence and innate behavioral challenges that require training to mitigate, not eliminate because any dog in a novel situation may respond in ways you don’t expect.
And here’s the real truth, if pitbulls were truly such a desirable breed they wouldn’t be flooding animal shelters. Let’s be honest with ourselves

    I disagree on three fronts
    1. It's definitely possible to modify behavior through genetic selection. We go from wolves to here in 15000 years only. Pugs are a living example of how much we can breed a dog physically. Pitbulls were bred for aggressiveness, a trait that we no longer desire.
    2. You only provide anecdotal evidence. That is not a good basis for decision-making.
    3. This is a human society. That a small (but not insignificant) percentage of the population fear pitbulls is enough to place controls over their adoption. We make species go extinct for much less. Keeping the streets safe to walk for everyone is much more important than preserving the right to own a particular breed of dog.
I do agree with you, that most pitbull attacks are to a great extent the owners' fault. But assuming owners aren't perfect for all breeds of dogs, the fact that it's the pitbull that attacks more often is telling of their genetic predispositions.

The American pit bull terrier became an established breed in 1898 and was the first breed recognized by the UKC.
The ADBA is the leading authority when it comes to the American pit bull terrier hairatge conformation standard and has recognized the breed since 1909.
The AKC has recognized the American Staffordshire Terrier, originally titled Staffordshire Terrier, since 1936.
50 UKC registered American pit bull terriers were selected to be retitled by the AKC. Those 50 dogs were then registered with the AKC under the breed title Staffordshire Terrier.
ADBA American pit bull terriers and AKC American Staffordshire Terriers are not the same.
They are two separate breeds and are bred to different standards, with each having bloodlines unique to their breed.
The American pit bull terrier is the foundation of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Selective breeding has produced two separate breeds.
Wisdom Panel claims that they have the ability to determine whether a dog is an American pit bull terrier or an American Staffordshire Terrier.
You can't talk about breed genetics and how a breed has been bred in a way that has genetically predisposed yada, yada, yada. When you use the umbrella term pitbull.
American pit bull terriers are purebred dogs. Many dogs that aren't American pit bull terriers are labeled pitbulls.
You have no clue what you are talking about.
A dog that displays aggression towards other dogs is no more likely to display aggression towards people than a dog that doesn't display aggression towards other dogs.
      Dog aggression isn't human aggression.
American pit bull terriers were never bred for bull/bare baiting, as those practices were outlawed long before the American pit bull terrier was established.
The extinct Old English bulldog, as well as Bull & Terrier type dogs, were used for those purposes.
American pit bull terriers were bred for dogfighting.
Bull/Bare baiting and dogfighting don't involve human biting.
      Protection work/sports,
      Involve biting people.
I don't care how dangerous you imagine my dogs are because are they really posing a threat to you or anyone else, no.
      Your safety equals my freedom.
I value my freedom more than I do your safety.
I would feel terrible if my dog hurt someone, and I would take full responsibility and expect to be held accountable.
My dogs aren't a danger to my community. They are friendly, well cared for, and securely kept where they belong.
Dogs are considered tangible property. Whatever other people choose to do with theirs has nothing to do with me and mine.
My dogs have plenty of desirable qualities, just like my boots.
My dogs are suited to fit my needs, just like my boots fit my feet.
You might live a lifestyle in which your feet have no need for boots, and you'd be just fine without them. However, you might still own a pair of boots you don't need.
American pit bull terrier breed as a whole (purebred American pit bull terriers) are healthy, mentally stable, eager to please, willing to work, have a friendly disposition, physically durable trainable/intelligent, adaptable dogs.
American pit bull terriers aren't poorly bred they have far fewer health issues than many other breeds. They typically have a friendly disposition and are more accepting of strangers and warm up to new people faster than other type of dogs.
A dog's genetics do have a lot to do with how they are. American pit bull terriers are high-energy, prey driven dogs that, more often than not, display some level of dog aggression and don't do well with other animals.
They aren't genetically overprotective or weary of strangers, compared with breeds such as the Fila Brasileiro of Cane Corso or Doberman.
Your feet might not require boots, and an American pit bull terrier might not fit your lifestyle.
But my feet are safer in boots, and my lifestyle is that which an American pit bull terrier fits in just right.

If you think pibulls are only influenced by their environment, how they are raised and handled then unfortunately it shows you do NOT understand dogs.
They were bred for a specific purpose, one that does not need to be trained this is what selective breeding actually is.
Posting cute pictures and making videos in a belief that this will prove how safe they are just shows the level of ignorance when it comes to those promoting these dogs as something they are not.
Generations of inbreeding and breeding from dogs that displayed unnatural behaviours such as ignoring other dogs appeasement signals and continuing to attack despite suffering serious injury to themselves has created unstable dangerous dogs.
Ones totally unsuitable to be kept as pets.
Some have attempted to breed these dangerous traits out but unfortunataly others have done the complete opposite.
Those people are the reason these dogs and many who come into contact with them suffer.
It will take many generations to fix this problem, in the meantime many with these dogs literally have ticking time bombs.
And no the dogs are not to blame they are doing exactly what they have been bred to do, it is the owners who are responsible along with the breeders and the pitbull properganda machine which includes many rescues promoting these dogs as your average all round pet.
If you love dogs then don't be part of their suffering ❤

This video is incredibly misinformative. American Pit bull terriers are incredibly powerful and driven dogs developed for the sole purpose of dog fighting. They were never Nanny dogs. Most of the dogs shown in this video and spoken about are bull breed mixes, not APBTs, who when temperament and drive are not carefully bred for, can create conflicting drives and produce many biting dogs. Misinformation like this is incredibly dangerous as it downplays the very important role genetics play in a dogs life. You wouldn’t deny a border collies herding instinct, so why deny a pit bulls just as designed animal aggression instinct. A true APBT does not show blind aggression, and are incredibly eager to please and friendly dogs towards humans, however they do have insane prey drive for other animals and dogs.

You people know zero about how genetics work, and that all dogs were bred for WORK. And in the case of PBs, that means they were bred to kill. It's that simple. Retrievers retrieve. Pointers point. Herders herd. Predators kill. I'm sorry way too many of you lack basic intelligence, and morality.
Dogs are also NOT people. So whatever applies to people, cannot be used to try to say it's 'discrimination' against a dog. Dogs are breeds, not races. You cannot be 'discriminatory' to an animal. They don't have human rights. Comparing them to people is offensive. Dogs are also incredibly stupid, contrary to popular myth. This may be true for pits, and they're wonderful dogs, till they're not. You cannot love or train away genetics. I don't care what you say. Why didn't you cover all the countless people and pit owners in detail that was mauled by their own lovingly raised pits? Instead you ended with something from the dodo, a sob story about the pit hearing the old lady and although this may be true, I would have appreciated this video more if you interview the Bennards, or Ian price's family. And if you don't know who these people are, go do more research. And by the way, I grew up with a wonderful pit. He was an amazing dog. But I'm not blind to just because my putty was nice, they're all angels. Pits are not family pets. There's a reason they're being banned in a lot of countries. I can say a lot more, but I'm tired. Wow, in the end I don't know if you liked the video or not after reading the whole comment. The truth is that from my perspective and according to the studies I have been able to verify, around 20% of the behavior of Pitbulls comes from their genetics. That is why I wanted to close the script in that way. Because really if these activities were not promulgated for these dogs, perhaps this video would not exist. It is true that there are dogs that have gone crazy, yes. But it also happens with other breeds and they have not been so incredibly preyed upon, unlike what happens with Pitbulls. Perhaps their physical appearance has much more to do with it than we think...

@thedoginspector I do like your video. You did a great job with your research and everything, but.. Unfortunately almost everything out there is basically nanny dog BS. The pitbul issue is highly controversial and this is why if you really, really want the true facts, you have to dig a lot deeper. Just do a simple search and see how pit puppies play with their siblings. I'll let you decide if that's normal puppy play behavior. Or best yet, go watch the fifth estate's documentary on pitbulls. And also another UA-camr called Raleigh Link on why she cannot support pit ownership anymore.
You must think I absolutely hate pits, but I don't. I specifically want them banned because I believe it would be the kindest thing for these dogs to not exist anymore. Why are the shelters overflowing with them? Because they're owned for all the wrong reasons. I really hope that they'll be banned one day. So they don't have to suffer under the hands of humans that created them. That pit mauling a baby is just doing what it was bred to do by humans. And now we're sitting with the results. And it's nothing to be proud of.

    Hi
I would like to add my opinion to the topic
As far as I am concerned, it is not a matter of genetics or environment, but a combination of both
Genetics is not everything but it plays a key role in the behavior of any animal species, it’s what we call instinct, we humans are no different either
In the selection of dog breeds, in addition to various shapes and colors we can also notice different behaviors: high prey drive, high tendency to defend territory or an extreme docility for examples
And of course aggression, but what kind?
The American pit bull terrier has been selected to be docile toward humans, really docile
but, at the same time, to be aggressive towards other dogs
Unfortunately, while many breeders are attempting to select pit bulls free of intraspecific aggression many “traditionalists” continue to want to maintain it, no comment
In this regard “Pitbull” is often misused to describe any molossid dog that vaguely resembles it, even though there is no trace of pit bulls in their genealogy (even a boxer x jack russell mix might be called a pit bull by some)
For example, the APT is not big at all; in fact, it is a medium-sized dog that while robust is also quite slender
most so-called pit bulls are mutts or the result of backyard breeding, you don't know what's in them, they could have any kind of temperament
Now I talked about temperament that has to be considered and has its impact but that remains a very small part
And then there is the environment in which they are raised and for that you have already said enough I think I don't have to add much
I just want to reiterate that love alone is not enough: Training, socialization, care and a stimulating environment all things that should not be overlooked
Oh, by the way 2 just videos in a short time and you are already surpassing 3000 subs, that’s great bro keep it up
    P.S.
Just a little correction, I’m not aware of other european countries (maybe england) but italy didn’t ban pitbulls,
Simply the APT is not recognized as a breed and you can't participate in exhibitions and stuff like that, but onestly who cares
You can totally have pit bulls both purebred bred by a few fanciers and the thousands waiting for a family in shelters
I myself have been a dog walker for my neighbor's good girl.

I had cousins who owned 2 pitbulls. One was the sweetest dog I had met up to that point. He needed no leash or reprimands. The other was vicious and violent. Neither had ever been trained... my cousins weren't exactly the sharpest tacks in the box...

I love this, it’s so true. Any dog can be a sweet dog depending on the humans. Pit bulls get a bad rep, and people are fearful because unfortunately they are used to fight. I had a pit pull, he was sweeter than my chihuahua.

You outline how they were bred specifically for dog fighting, then go on to claim how the breed is "known for their kindness". Based on your video on Pugs I was hoping for an objective approach and something to challenge my belief, but your view is very biased.
And the way you use Stubby is very manipulative, that dog is far from being associated with the general Pitbull breed this video is about.

  • @Rafskat

I agree, it depends on upbringing, sames apply to people as well.
I had a few Staffies (english ones - staffordsire bullteriers), they don't look intimidating or dangerous to most people, but there is also some prejudice toward them (maybe trough simmilarity with other bull breeds).
Both of them, and also bunch of other staffies i know are just sweet, friendly (sometimes too friendly) dogs.
I would not trust them to guard my house.. they would want to play with the thief and forget about everything else.

I will never had a pitbull, no matter how many times people says "is the owner" and show me dumb tiktok videos about pits being cute. I'm not going to ever put my dogs in that potential deadly danger, ignore statistics, physical differences and behavioral patterns.

When little children play near my house and screams she will go near gate and keep an eye on them, kids always touch her through the front gate when they are coming back from school. She never shown an ounce of aggression against people and she instead adores children. The only time she really show the so called "aggressive pitbull" behavior is when she sees street dogs but on other hand she's totally fine when I take her to vetinary hospital were there many dogs, I believe she gets aggressive towards dogs that's not attended by a human. Anyway pitbulls are the sweetest thing in the world and shame on media and so called journalists who sensationalise news.
