I accidentally came across this study technique, when my teacher would allow us one “cheat sheet” for the exam. I would spend the time trying to shorten and condense all the info into that one page, that by the time I’m able to fit everything in it, i end up memorizing all the info and end up not even needing the cheat sheet lol. I’m pretty sure the teacher knew that was going to be the end result, and that’s why he gave us the 1 sheet rule. Thinking he was letting us off easy, but actually what ended up was he tricked us into studying. 😂 and this actually helped me so much, as I aced all my tests in his class, I just ended up doing this for all my future exams. And seeing this method is used even by med students for their exams, i guess my high school teacher was onto something...

I used a form of this for my A-level biology. I would summarise each chapter into an A4 piece of paper so by exams I had only 21 pieces of paper to revise from, I would then try to go through them as if I am teaching someone the topic. I got an A* - It was my best subject. I could never stick to those spaced repetition spreadsheets and I would waste time setting them up.

@Aurora I went over all those notes repeatedly and used anki flashcards on the commute to school few weeks before the exam; I would still say that's spaced repetition but I didn't follow any strict schedule the way for example Ali Abdaal sets it up. Close to the exams you should know which areas you struggle with more than the others and just focus on that. I found that planning and updating the spreadsheet would take time and distract me. Give it a go though see what you like.

    notes
    - trying to understand the concepts for the most of the year
    - 2-3 (4)weeks before the exam starting to memorize
    overview
    - active recall: flash cards, question banks,... ↠ using one notebook to memorize everything every time HIGH INTENSITY NOTEBOOK RECALL
you take loads of information and minimize it to a small page
    Step 1 Distillation
    - distill everything in one section; cut out things that you know or that repeat themselves
    Step 2 Reformulation
-reformulate those bullet points in small sections
ex. Absence ↠ F>M, 3-10YRS, Few Secs, Hypervent,...

I never learnt how to study even being in second year in medical school this is my first time knowing how to study properly by using your 4 methods: Flowing through the lecture slides and understanding them and then condensing them onto a word point. From there I would use the memorization techniques by using the - Distillation, reformulation and the upload via Word document or a notebook. That for me sums it on how to study for medical school. I have an exam in 1 week I don't know how I am going to pass at this rate, but I will try my best to do what I can. Thanks Anas for your tips and how to study.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've been struggling with distillation for the longest time. I don't know if it is due to my ADD, but I always write down way too many details and my notes just look like a copy of the textbook. Now I can get away with it because the information isn't too much. But later on I will get way more information that I need to study in a short amount of time. Thank you so much for taking the time to actually explain the distillation process:)

ALSO frm my experience the worst thing you can do for anatomy is panic, the exam usually comes easier than you think.

Most of the time: content, concepts, infomatioon
Only a small portion spent to memorizing
    Overview: principle, but different execution
Spaced repition is the underlying prinicple
    Active recall
    High intensity notebook record
As condense as possible, then repeat frequently
    1. Distillation: to condense
    ○ Tailored for an exam, only the essense
    2. Reformulation
    ○ Cue and keywords
    3. Upload
    Repeat daily

now i know why i used to be able to memorize everything last year. I was spending an extreme amount of time trying not to waste pages in my notebook...
i always thought it was a nuisance because of limited notebook space so I switched to obsidian online notes this year and I had a harder time memorizing stuff. Always assumed my cognitive abilities deteriorated. Guess I'm going back to old-school!

Do you start filling in the notebook after every lecture or do you just start making it and memorizing a few weeks in advance? Also how long does it usually take you? Great video btw! I’ve been binging your videos the past few days because I’m in a really bad burnout after my first year of uni and am struggling to get through my summer class. The tips you give are really helpful and unique:)
