As a pre med student who uses most of their time studying I just recently figured out that I am not studying effectively and with my MCAT right around the corner it’s terrifying to risk changing my study habits because I’ve been getting great results however after hearing thoughts on not writing notes and how it’s been working well for you I’m going to give these tips a try
i suggest not to try new things as you have your exams in the corner because trying new things if your exams are close will cause inconsistency in your normal way of studying , which as you said gets you good marks as well ( this was suggested by kharma himself btw ) so try sticking with your normal note taking or try if you want to just a suggestion . good luck
i think it would be really cool to try using no notes, let us know how it goes!! Im in highschool and im really really really wanting to get faster at studying
I am in my first year psychology and did the same in the first semester, endless note taking, which I realised after the exams, had been pointless. I now focus on relisening lectures, reading lecture notes and looking at past exam papers.
I'm a 3rd year psych student who struggles with ADHD, so reviewing lectures is a daunting task in itself, however I have noticed that when profs provide a single past paper I understand what I should be studying more clearly and can relate it to the lectures. Problem for me is, none of my profs provide past papers anymore and I cannot seem to find any that are geared toward psychology, have you managed to find any resources which provide just that? Thanks!
@@InversePacman Hey! I've not been through the UK or US university systems so not sure if this will be relevant or not (I am a psychology student though). When I didn't have access to past papers I would make my own. I'd go through the lectures and think about what the most important things to know seemed to be, then write questions covering those topics and also write out an ideal answer based on the lecture information. Then after a week or two I'd try to answer the questions from memory and compare my answers to the 'ideal answers' I'd written from my notes. If you have friends in the class it can be great if everybody writes their own questions and shares them because then you can see what other people think are the most important points and good answers to these. The first time you do this you could even make a time to talk with the lecturer or tutor to see if you are on the right track in terms of identifying the main things they are looking for.
Wow. This "not taking notes" thing is so relatable. I recently switched to not taking notes too when I realised the ultimate fellow that assists us in the examination hall is our Brain. All information needs to be stored there, whether through writing notes or directly from text books. So yea it is a waste of time sometimes and can give you a false sense of accomplishment Thankyou Nasir for these amazing and lesser known tips 🙏

One of my studying mistakes: Not knowing for this channel earlier. Last year and a half of my graduate studies I was so much more productive with less effort by following and listening to you. I graduated 7 days ago in Computer Science. Thank you!
Kharma your videos have helped me alot, I discovered your channel in 12th grade and now I am in medicine and anatomy is just alot. The amount of terminology never stops. Your channel and story helps a lot
Great tips! Someone below said this too but I would love to see how you actively study and use past year papers (tips & tricks on this alone). I think the not taking notes part of your video is the hardest to wrap my mind around, for me. Congrats on the match btw!
I've just switched to taking notes on Notion thanks to watching your old video - I'd seen a lot of other UA-cam videos on it but it was your video which really let me see how useful it could be for me and pushed me to try it out. It's changed my life as it means that my notes are well organised and easy to find when I need them (such as when reviewing my answers to past paper questions).
The tips here are very helpful, thanks Kharma. I tried active learning by working on the past year paper but I had the difficulty to answer the questions as I have not mastered the concepts and linkage between the facts. I am wondering if you can make a video showing how you did it with some live examples? Guess it may help others as well. Thanks
Such valuable tips! I feel motivated and inspired to try different studying technics since I’ve always just wrote notes on paper or the computer. Thanks again Nasir, love your videos and this awesome community! Good luck to everyone else studying and stay safe! ✌️
past papers are great but i feel like without background knowledge and base its not efficient at all. i’d recommend past papers when medical school content becomes recycled bc u already learned the material u just need a refresh and practice.
The best possible advice to listen to just before writing my mocks. It just helps relief all the pressure. And just like always, thank you for the great content!! Keep it up
amazing video! I reallly liked how this has basically reiterated all the mistakes I also make when it comes to learning. I guess this is a reminder for me to start following what I know works!
I see that jacket Nas 👀. Wonderful videos as always. I especially agree with the fact that past paper questions are essential. I started using them as my main form of learning for my 9th and 10th IGCSEs, when I watched your videos. Thanks you so much !!
I had the same problem with hand written notes, so I tried not taking them and unfortunately with engineering degrees writing is a must.. it sucks how much time it takes but drawing diagrams, writing formulas and definitions is the only way I can understand and learn
Best tips i've ever received. To be honest im going through the exact same mistakes you did. So, this was a very good mind opening video that can help you change your studying techniques for the best. Thanks Nasir for another grate vid
Hi Nasir, I recognised myself so much in some of the struggles in mentality around studying for exams! It gives me more courage to try different techniques and see what works best. I feel like many are stuck in writing and typing notes and that so much emphasis is on this technique to learn for exams that we forget to study how to study and what works best for ourselves! Good luck to everyone in finding what works best for them! ;)
Well I did most of it wrong and exactly how you said and am going to have an exam in two days. Watched this video because I felt like I haven't studied at all and just feel bad mentally. What hurts most is that active learning and spaced repetition are methods that my sister uses all the time. I knew it is better, but I was just stuck on this idea that I need a summary of everything and can only look at the questions / old or example exams if I went "through everything". It's so passive and time consuming but it's easier. Thank you for your advice. It was important to me to "officially" be called out doing these mistakes / inefficient methods.
5:58 Not a day goes by when I don’t hate myself for not creating a study space for my friends instead of gatekeeping resources that could’ve helped many of my classmates.
Your the man. Needed these ideas been lacking on study’s just started college. Can work out for hours no problem but learning medical info an issue after two hours XD. This helped a lot 🤙🏻
I don't take notes anymore either! The only thing I write down is concepts I haven't understood yet. So, drawing out hormone interactions, any sort of anatomy that i haven't fully grasped yet. Apart from that, everything else goes straight to Anki!
The biggest mistake I use to make was just writing down the notes in a lecture. This made it so that I was focused on transcribing most of the time, but it did not make me learn.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome" (forgot the last bit lol) this quote really helped me in my studies because as you said : if something - even if it worked once- doesn't work anymore for you then change it! great video as always :)
After studying several years i have Also come to same conclusion. For me too it was hard to move on from my passive way of acquiring and testing knowledge.
The most thing I really guilty is taking notes, don't want to use active recall(cuz think taking note are more efficiently), and holding up using past paper(I mean by such as you said need to cover all the lecture note first then can use past paper). Thank you soo much for making this video that makes me realize it🤧
Hi! I have a request for you. After your experience with the USMLE steps and the new study’ techniques; If you would need to take the the Step 1 now. How would you do it? What would be your plan or your study schedule? Would you use the same resources?

in fact when doing the past papers first youll know what is most important when reading lectures or literature and youll recall that what you read/went through it in the past papers
