Italian basketball Is EXTREMELY underrated. Italian clubs have won 13 Euroleagues (that's more than any other Nation). Their Championship Is good and fun to Watch and people forget way to easily that they are One of the most successful National teams with 2 Olympic Silvers, 10 EuroBasket medals (only Spain has won more), 8 mediterranean games medals and finally they are the only European Nation with two number 1 picks at the NBA Draft (Andrea Bargnani and Paolo Banchero)
1. Spain has 13 Euroleagues too. 2. Last trophy was in 2000-01 (Virtus Bologna), right now its 2023... 3. Lithuania/Yugoslavia/Soviet Union have more than 2 Olympic medals - France 2 Olympic Silvers 4. Soviet Union/Yugoslavia/Czechoslovakia have more than 10 EuroBasket medals - France 10 Medals. 5. Paolo Banchero was born/raised in USA, never played in any Italian teams/national teams (yet), i doubt if he ever visited Italy 6. Andrea Bargnani was just an ok player (14 ppg), n1 pick in one of the worst nba drafts. Also n1 draft pick means nothing. Luka Doncic was drafted 3rd and he might end top 25-50-75 nba players of all time!
@@DarkTifa Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union don't exist anymore. And they were literally made out of multiple countries combined. Of course they won all Those medals! Paolo Banchero has the Italian passport and he can't wait to visit Italy. Being a Number 1 pick Is a very difficult achievement. So It still has a lot of meaning!
@@AsMinor1977 That was essentially the Euroleague at the time. At One point It changed name and owners and It became the Euroleague but It was the exact same thing
Varese is really fascinating this year, beause this style of play is incredible offensively, but allows well prepared european offences to score a lot because of the high pace, the inesperience to play in Europe of some of the most important players like Owens (as you pointed out in a previous video) and an incredible inability to mantain an advantage in the score, so the team can litterally win or lose again everybody alike. But still one of the most intersting basketball projects in both Italy and Europe to me, very appreciated content👌🏻 PS: I'm Varese born and raised and obviously a fan of the city's team, and when i heard "legendary team", a tear almost wet my face, thank you 😂 huge fan of the channel by the way, probs 💪🏻
Thank you, Jacopo, definitely one of the most exciting teams to follow this year in Europe and hopefully it is the right first step into a successful comeback to glory.
Yes. I haven't seen them as much though. Could you go a bit more in detail why it doesn't work? To me, such system can only work if the players are perfectly-suited for it.
exciting but moreyball has yet to win anything in the NBA with schmanalytics, the dubs and miami used elements of d'antoni ball but not exactly d'antoni basketball
As mentioned in the video, Varese has one of the lowest payrolls in Italy as well. This playing style is giving Varese an advantage to compete against teams that are spending significantly more money on salaries than they are
@@dynctive ok,but you have also many teams that have good scores with low salaries and they dont play this kind of basketball...i think you need more time to see if this kind of basketball can get you anything...
@@tonilisica7666 this kind of system needs great players to really do well ( like Houston, Harden and all of his teammates are a threat too ) while this team in Italy isn't comparable in terms of talent but despite that theyre really doing good. Great players need high salaries, but in this case this team has limited budget so you can see the result..
Due to their financial situation recently, this team was supposed to be like 7-14 at this moment of the season, instead they are 5th in the league, giving trouble to most of the teams. Of course, I understand your long-term view but that's an interesting project in Varese that's having a great start in its' first year
It is refreshing for you to admit that the slow and boring Euroclown style only works in Europe against other slow and boring Euroclown style teams. Keep up the good work.

I love your guys breakdowns
The first place where the 7s or less were used was… Série A! D’Antony started in Italy in the 80s.

European championships not euroleague titles.

Great video! It would be interesting to see how better teams adjust their defense to play against Varese.
Thank you! That's a great idea, maybe for a Twitter thread in a short future
Scola is doing some interesting things at Varese.
Tariq Owens' long strides are super eye-opening.
Do you think you could break down how each international player in the NBA excels at playing in their own style?
ie. could you do Josh Giddey
Can someone tell me the number of rings D'Antoni system won?
Exactly.
Such a great analysis
Love these videos.
Thank you Esteban
I m curious which leagues the letters at 1:22 stand for

A basketball team that focuses on offense as it’s primary attribute will always come up short.
Except when it doesnt. Like '18 GSW, Shaq's Lakers, Lebron's Cavs and Heat...
Looks like handball tactics to me ;)
Really nice video, but i am sure, that at a higher level of basketball in Europe it would not be successful.
That's a case-study I want to see the most in the Euroleague. Super intrigued to see
The Italian league is the best European championship if you exclude ACB and VTB....and the Euroleague of course
The level doesn't get that much higher but yeah would be interesting to see this in Euroleague. I don't see why it couldn't work
Am I the only ones who still likes execution after the 2/3s of the offence time ?
Great execution is always beautiful to watch. However, basic math (probabilities, the value of each shot) has changed the game in the last few years.
Paris try to do kinda the same thing but it didn't really work in fact
Yes. I haven't seen them as much though. Could you go a bit more in detail why it doesn't work? To me, such system can only work if the players are perfectly-suited for it.

They need better shooters
They aren´t even in italy #1
Because their budget is like 10x smaller than the 1st place? They were supposed to be between the last places before the season, yet they are 5th
Please, it's pronounced "Dantoni", not "Dee-Antoni": it's an Italian surname!
Varese is 12-9 at italy so its nothing special...that kind of basketball cant win anything just few higlihts
