Great video. I just purchased a 2018 4 door hardtop S + JCW, Carbon Edition. It has 55k miles and I want to service the trans. Glad I found your channel! Thanks!
Thank you friend, those details will now help me to do my services to my car myself, because I no longer trust the workshops since a series of things have happened and I feel deceived. To the point that I already hated my car, and I didn’t see the why of things and now I understand why, we live in bad times and people take advantage of us for that reason I will do the services myself even if it is at the door of my apartment, thank you very much friend one more time . Shalom
Right now I tried to change the oil from the automatic transition box, but I could not because the way of filling is completely different from yours, the emptying is easy but the filling cannot be done by hand, loss of time and money for pleasure now I have to look for a workshop and tell them that I have the oil and see if they give it to me taking the oil, and that they charge me the labor and do not damage me something else as always 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
Make sure that you lubricate the o-rings with a little oil so it keeps them from snapping and causing a massive oil housing leaks for the drain and filter housing.
Great video, I have a manual 2017 Cooper S Works 210bhp here in the UK which I've had a few months now and love but do find the manual gearbox a little stiff to get into gear at times. Has 35000 miles and has full BMW service history but transmission oil has never been done. Don't think its the clutch so might have a look at linkage and perhaps change the transmission oil. Might even add in some Liqui Moly 1040 gearbox oil additive with it to see if it helps. On the Mini forums people don't rate the manual shift so I'm hoping to get a better driving experience from it as everything else about the car I love. Nothing better than having a smooth manual gear shift to fully enjoy the driving experience.
the Auto will not be the same as my video, I would check out this www.minif56.com/threads/2020-mini-cooper-s-transmission-fluid-change-on-dct.93163/ there is a link to a video there as well. I know the person in the video extracted the fluid from the top, i believe there is a drain on the bottom as well.
I'd like to inquire about the engine and gearbox used in that model because I have a BMW 2 GC F44 with a 136HP engine, and I want to change the oil as well, considering it shares a similar platform. Could you provide information on the engine and gearbox used in the Mini?
@@improvedgarage Thanks for the information! I have the same engine but an automatic gearbox - Getrag 7DCT300, but the procedure should be the same. THANKS!!
@@TheZutox yep! the engine oil and filter should be the same, your trans would obviously be different, and i dont have experience with the getrag 7 speed DCT, but ive heard its a great trans.
Trans plugs (upper and lower) wont budge. Tried a cordless impact (level 1, afraid to strip on level 2) wrench and still nada. Are they supposed to be so difficult to remove? Any suggestions?
It’s only supposed to be 30 ftlb. If they are that tight make sure you’re removing the top one first. That way you don’t end up with an empty trans and no way to fill it.
@@improvedgarage I noted that from you video, thank you! I was trying the upper fill plug first. My 450 ft/lb rated Dewalt Impact couldn't budge it. Im at a loss as I dont want to strip the plug either. Clearly someone at BMW massively over-torqued the plug and/or its completely seized. Im thinking (after watching hours more UA-cam) that a torch will be the only way to break this thing loose. Funny enough, I called my BMW mechanic and he said, "why on earth are you changing your trans fluid? Dont do it, only causes issues. BMW trans fluid is lifetime".
Bmw considers lifetime to be 100k miles on automatic transmissions 60k on manuals. Here’s some more info. blog.fcpeuro.com/bmw-lifetime-transmission-fluid-isnt-lifetime
hmm, ive done this job a few times without cracking the drain. I would say, 1. make sure the Oring is in the right place 2. put a little oil on the oring when you install it 3. inspect the threads on your filter cap and make sure that its not damaged and causing a tear or mark in the oring.
My personally I had very luck on just doing drain and fill instead of flushing But there some old ATF fluid in torque converter and clutch act as friction My service interval was coming up soon 20K miles 2024 Countryman just doing drain and fill instead of flushing it completely My experience on transmission flush on Nissan Rogue was awful it slipping it won’t go into gear unless if I floored the gas pedal 100% full throttle get it moving 😂😂😂😂 it happened 2023 when that car was last used been sitting garage never used again
How are you not afraid to mess it up lol I want to do a transmission flush on my 6 speed auto but afraid of putting in too much oil. Does the manual say how much ??
The manual lists a capacity, but honestly the amount you put in is based a little on the amount you take out. With the manual you just add until it comes out the fill hole, with the automatic its likely different but similar, ive never done an automatic mini. I've done this a few times, but when i started out i was definitely afraid of messing it up.
The auto 6 speed is 6 liters or 6.3-6.4 quarts. You always want to measure the amount of ATF 6 trans fluid that is removed from the auto gearbox and replace with the exact amount of new fluid because you will not be able to drain it all. You may be able to get most of it if you pump it out though.
Hey there, thanks for watching the video. Instead of cutting me down, maybe it would help me and all of my viewers if you made a suggestion on an alternative weight to use in a tuned BMW. Nowhere in the video did I say that im an expert on oil weights and that 0W-20 is the best oil to use for a tuned car, It was chosen because its the OEM weight. Try to be helpful next time.
@@improvedgarageagreed with the response. You could go with 0w-30 synthetic. The 0 part is for cold start no change there. The 30 will help for high rpm applications will keep better viscosity when engine is hot. If you really want to get into addressing oil weight better go with a dry sump system but that a different world.
@@EvoSGooDthanks for the response. I have done my oil before but not my manual transmission fluid but will not do it after seeing this video. Did you also do the differential fluid at some point? Thanks.
@@improvedgarage I just did my oil and transmission fluid. The Haynes manual says 2 quarts but fill the trany until fluid starts to flow out of the fill hole. After putting in the 2 quarts, I still did not have fluid coming out and my car is level on quick jack in the garage. Did you transmission take 2 quarts? I am thinking about getting a 3rd quart and putting more in until it starts flowing out of the drain plug. Not sure what is going on, but your video was helpful. Thanks.
@@improvedgarage Thanks. It doesn't make sense as the manual says 2 quarts and 2 quarts came out. I am afraid of under filling but also overfilling. Maybe my garage has a slight slope towards the door.
Great video as always. One reason to loosen the fill cap is also to release the vacuum so it drains out faster and more completely.
Agreed! Also it makes sure that if you accidentally stripped the fill cap somehow you aren’t unable to drive the car.
