Its not silly. Its used behind close doors. If someone is speaking their language akata will not stand out if you never heard it. Ironically Nigerians dont like the word used on them by Ghanians which is alatafuo and it is often used as coded language to talk about how they move and scam or how they azonto more than Ghanians. Someone even said GH grandmas use it in a derogatory manner. Its the same thing. Its all about context but its often used to say bad things about them without them knowing.

Its silly to me because for years i have spoken Wolof, Fula & Mandinka...learned those cultures...cooked their food & have lived among them in TOTAL peace!!! I have done the same with the Igbo. I am not as fluent in Igbo as the other West African languages but I know their culture & cook their food....again, I mingle with them in TOTAL peace!!!! So I have no beef with ANY African, no matter the area in Africa they may come from. I view them as my people & I have always been met with the same treatment!!!!

Where are my fellow African immigrants? Sometimes we need to cut the crap and speak truthfully-have an honest conversation. I've followed Uhuru for a while many at times silently....
Here is the deal, we (read Africans) come from a diverse of cultures. We are, one, separated geographically for the most part as countries and two within the countries as tribes and sub-tribes. I'm a Kikuyu Kenyan immigrant who may not know much about a Taita Kenyan immigrant right from the language to other cultural norms. This is true to other African countries.
I never knew the word Akata even say after my first few years in the US. Assimilation within the African community here ( mostly Kenyan) I learnt of the word. Again *in* *my* *community* The word is not used as often as such and when it appears in context,it'll be casual or so to say. It's not part of a daily vocabulary. The more we become accepting and really know and learn of one another the lesser we have become distant from one another.
So I learnt the word first, then later learnt that its derogatory. I didn't even know where the word originated from...
Just stop using the word, that's all.

I agree with not using derogatory words. But the problem is that the misconception surrounding the word is a real problem. When certain Africans from particular tribes are speaking and mention akata, anyone passing by black american for instance will think they're talking about him, meanwhile, it's a word in reference to something not connected with him or anybody. This presents a problem of speaking ones own language in public. It's really a good thing that it's not a word that comes up in casual conversations in african languages that have this word.

Are you a Yoruba? Are you familiar with the songs of the popular Yoruba musician King Sunny Ade? He sang about Akata (wildcat) in one of his albums of 60s/70s. This is the lyrics, “ ki akata pa adiye, ki o tun pa aladiye, eewo ni o”. The Yoruba lyric simply means, “ for a wildcat to kill a chicken and also the owner of the chicken is an impossibility “. So it’s not movie creation.
If you are not Yoruba, show the lyric to any elderly Yoruba man. Most younger Yoruba people don’t have an idea possibly because Akata(wildcat ) as an animal is more or less extinct and so it’s name

In Ghana, it is used to refer to people who wear designer clothes. It's very popular in high schools in Ghana, among the youth and not the older generation. It's very unfortunate that some Africans travel and use that word only to refer to Africans born in the diaspora. Truth is that in Ghana, it is used to refer to people (usually men) who wear nice fancy clothes. The term became very popular in the early 2000s when baggy jeans, big costumes and chains were popular among the youth. They'll call you akata if you dress like Jarule or 50 Cent or Jay Z or Nas. It wasn't derogatory then because all of us wanted to be as cool as those rappers. Using it to refer to only diaspora Africans will be very insulting. In Ghana when someone dresses like a rapper or speaks with an American accent, he's called akata. If you go to Ghana, you'll get a different response from people because the word is used to refer to everything related to hip hop. Akata in Ghana basically means hip hop. It is not negative. It only became negative when some people travelled and decided to use it to refer only to our brothers and sisters born and raised in the diaspora (especially USA). It's like calling them names, and that is not good at all especially when they have no clue what it means. We're all Africans (from different backgrounds though) but we're one. No silly name calling.
    UPDATE
Even now, there are young artists in Ghana who call themselves Akata. You can Google the rap groups, Akafoc or Akata Boys. They are based in Kumasi in the Asante (Ashanti Region)

Here we have a brother who’s been to the continent for about 8 years and still reverts to the ignorant oversimplification of the people on the continent. I was so disappointed in the line of questioning. Again, there are tons of people in Nigeria who don’t even know what that word means. You can't use one word to paint a WHOLE people.

Its funny when I hear so many African American think its a derogatory word. Honestly it wasn't derogatory going by the origin of the word, my uncle that studied in USA said something about it. He said when Fela Anikulapo came to USA in the 60s or 70s, Fela was invited to join the black panther society, he went for their meeting and when he got back to his group, his African group asked him where he went and he replied I went for the akata's meeting(molo si ipade awon akata). The black panther had a wild cat as their logo, that was exactly how the akata name came to be. So it wasn't derogatory from the beginning as it was only being referred to a liberation group, but as times went on Nigerians in America started abusing the word and using it in a derogatory way towards African Americans

It’s not generally used ,even in Nigeria. The illiterate and indigenous Nigeria mostly from lagos used it to recognise their fellow citizens with European views. Nigerians in the US. most have used to react to name calling by African Americans who think they are not Africans or different from them. This is the first time I'm hearing this. With all the problems we (Nigeria in particular) worry about with regards to bad governance, how we'll feed our families and many other issues, we now sit in circles talking and calling black Americans, "Akata?" What you're most like to hear in gathering is talk about football clubs and the premiere league more than half the time. I heard from an igbo man that they have a word, "akata" but I don't recall the meaning he gave. Some other igbos say they don't have such word. The other story I heard was about the musician Fela Kuti, who came to America and was thrilled by the Black panther and their revolution and revolution and activism was what he was all about, so when he thought of African Americans, he referred to them as the Panthers in his language, Yoruba, which is Akata (a wild cat eg. Panther or Cougar). THAT is what I read, I never heard Fela say this himself. A ghanaian also claimed that a tribe has this word and it means, flashy or dope. In my own tribe I found out not long ago from my mom, that Akata is the word for eel (the sea creature). But believe me, the only time any African (outside of the tribes that have the word) get's to really know that word, ironically, is when they get to the US. Which is rather weird but at the same time understandable since it's less than 0.0000001 % of the population that have this word in their language.

Just subscribed to your channel. This is interesting---and sadly not surprising. I've been watching Phrankleen's channel so I'm neither surprised nor offended. Just glad to be further put up on game so I know who and where to avoid. Learning Fela Kuti's story and seeing how big the Nigerian community is in Houston speaks volumes. I'm just glad to be put up on game! Great video, lol!!!!

What’s wrong with Akata? It simply means “stray cat” in Yoruba, and is a sweet way for Nigerians to express their wish for the lost brothers and sisters to be able to finally come home.

Anthony Boateng it’s a Yoruba word meaning a wild cat. Like an Undomesticated cat. So I guess they use for Americans because they are not home but out in the wild? I guess. Me I just don’t know why Ghanaians copying others language they know nothing about. What I don’t get is why Caribbean’s aren’t called akata.

Asante Akan It is in reference to the Black Panthers in the 60s and that is why it does not apply to people in the Carribean. Akata in Yoruba is a general word for cats that are can not be tamed, domesticated etc. Lions, cheetahs, panthers etc fall under the category though they have individual names in Yoruba. All in all I think it is better not to refer to anyone as akata since it has taken on a new meaning and is rubbing people the wrong way.

Wesley Snipes character in the movie Sugar Hill back in 1994, he played a drug dealer (of course a script for the world to stereotype) who beat on some Nigerians who called him AKATA (of course we don’t know the origin, but Hollywood set this ACT in motion over 20 years ago). In the movie his character learned it meant cotton picker from the Nigerians hence why he laid hands on them (the character in the movie). Many say there is no Yoruba word for cotton, but if this was a way to say cotton picker then you know the drill. The scene from Sugar Hill (1994) is on UA-cam.
