  • 31 Battalion was a light infantry battalion in the South African Army and SWATF. The battalion consisted of men recruited from the hunter-gatherer San people - thus becoming known as the "Bushman" Battalion. In this episode, André Odendaal tells us about his experiences and life inside the elite unit. In future episodes he will speak of his time at 5 Recce and the Israeli Army. f you have questions, leave them below. Please subscribe for more episodes and click the "bell" to be informed.

It would be great to hear more of 101 battalion, especially their recce group.

André does a great job of trying to put into words that electric feeling of being in operational areas...nothing quite like it and very addictive for young men who are that way inclined. He speaks really well and sounds like a great guy.

Its very true that it can actually be quite difficult to get into a gunfight. There is a lot more waiting around and fruitless operations than there are hollywood moments.

I will ask that question in my next interview with Andre. For the record, my last camp with Regiment Groot Karoo was Hooper and Packer

Don't degrade the medics because that's the first word coming out of someone's mouth when they get wounded 🫡
