Man oh man, listening to the Colonel brings the memories flooding back of the outstanding leaders we had throughout 61 & 62 Mech... Officers & NCO's! And it went up a level in the operational theatre: calm, skilled, energetic, full of initiative. They filled us with excitement to follow wholeheartedly ... possibly because we finally got to use all that endless friggen training!!! 😅
Thanks for this. I was struck by the enthuisiastic demeanour of Jan Malan. Professional to the core. Neat, fit and trim - cutting a very dapper / smart figure Could not miss noticing his polished shoes! Some habits die hard!
Excellent overview of a revolutionary vehicle. The SA military (and supporting civilian developers) created many huge innovations in the 1975 to 1990 era that radically transformed the effectiveness of the Army. These include the Ratel, the G5/G6 programme, new radio gear, logistical supply innovations and others. For each of these, new methods and doctrines needed to be developed, new training programs as well as developing and training support infrastructures (tiffies etc). The Navy and Airforce too. Strike craft, new missiles, .... Heck, even the medical corps developed new ways to handle combat injuries. Most militaries evolved slowly, but not SADF. It was not just a military effort, but an entire industrial effort too.
Ratel, the world's first wheeled infantry fighting vehicle. The main reason why there are so many shot-out Russian T38 tanks still lying around in southern Angola.
Excellent to hear a passionate and knowledgeable talk from Col Jan Malan about one of my favorite vehicles. Had the privilege of working with these beasts upgrading comms equipment. Had to drive it around the parking lot... An experience I will never forget. And that gem hidden at the end of the actual audio from the tank killer was amazing. Thank you Andrew and the Legacy team for all you are doing!
I lovved watching this Thank you both very much for taking us back into the places where we formed those incredibly strong bonds of gold. and yes, I have often mentioned how incredibly brave and expert the ratel tiffies were during smokeshell. They came right into the hot battle zone to load up the immobilized vehicles and to repair some others. Sadly too little was said of these great men but I witnessed their actions firsthand out there. Thanks to those incredible mechanical technicians.
Very well presented and explained for those who were not familiar with this fantastic vehicle. Brings back great memories! Thank you Colonel Jan Malan.
@@LegacyConversations Its all thanks to you Koos, and Legacy, we have to keep out history alive and to let the world and younger generations know how amazing effective the SADF was wether technically or from a leadership and training perspective... What a fantastically ergonomic vehicle Having operated or served in FV432 Spartan Swede SUSA & Warrior I can safely say this looks like a vehicle I could operate fight and live on for extended periods 👍👍
Thank you, Jan, such passion and knowledge, this brings back some fantastic memories. They are still good vehicles, and that engine sound and running with the tow bar is legendary, darn heavy, but you learn fast during the run! It looks like Legacy has found a new avenue to explore, the vehicles and equipment used by Us?

Great video, loved it. I would suggest before the interview do a once over with the interviewee to make sure of language use especially if it is your 2nd language.
@@andrewwhitaker7313 please do not see it as an insult or derogatory, I loved it. I just gave some information to make everything flow and it makes it easier for everyone. I will never insult any of our Officers. My apologies if I upset anyone. I will remove if you want me to.
I think an interesting story would be the bats that got the honoris crux for the search of the downed helicopter pilot in Angola. He was rescued until enemy fire. Bat Captain Parkin lead the rescue. No idea how you will get hold of them?
To think the same ratels are in service some 40 years later, shows you how ahead of the curve the domestic manufacturers were. Granted the SANDF has massive budget shortfalls
Engine was a D3256 BTXF - Diesel, 32=132mm bore, 5=150mm stroke, 6 cylinder. B=Bussing, T=turbo charged, X=abnormal horsepower, F=forward control. The engine was not what made that signature noise but it was the hydrolic fan😎
Great old Ratel brings back many good memories of 61 Meg. Thanks for the presentation Col Malan.
Ken nie vir Kol Malan maar kan sommer sien, n man van staal of sal ek se n YSTER. Salute Kol.

Well done Andrew and thank you Jan Malan for your service.

The Eland not running on diesel but on petrol just to rectify
The amaizing whining buzz tone of a moving Ratel ! Wow ! What a unique and special sound
The sound of approaching Ratels was next level.

I loved the recording at the end. Well done, manne
Nice to see him wearing the 61 Mech cap - my old batallion.
That was very cool. The story that man could tell 😎
I love the accents, miss it so much!

More info on the engine, otherwise a good presentation thank you.

Jan was comfortable doing the interview in English. This was confirmed with him prior to the start and he handled it extremely well

Wie weet van die Ratel wat 'n KPL verdring het by Walvisbaai en hoe hulle die Ratel gered het.
Eland was called a Noddy car
I was a buffil driver and that had a ADE engine
Come and tell us Bevan, we are interested in that vehicle, Koos
Most of the vechiles had ADE power which essentially is/was Mercedes Benz power made under licence.
What was the engine make?
Bussing
