i was thinking when allen called back mana it was actually nea or the dog from manga had nea soul an was in. i do not know really. also i hear she got her isntagram up again.
The primary reason why we love Allen Walker as a character so much is that apart from his hugely distinct uniqueness apart from other Shonen protagonists, Allen is a melancholic character, a temperament we rarely see in protagonists. His more emotional and reflective rather than the noisy, hot-headed and idiotic characters we see in other series. He inspires contemplation rather than trying to act like “the cool guy” in every single episode. Traditional shonen characters capture how guys want to be and act but Allen Walker, however, captures how they really feel inside.
@alfmni IMO it’s not just the polite gentleman mask vs the more familiar tone he has since regained (and which is Red-like, especially since Red was just a little kid) - it’s the overall introspective nature of Allen, which we see even when he’s alone.
To be fair there was many characters that was unique back then in the 90s,20s, to the 12,or 13 but no one talks about them anymore. Oh remember claymore,Medaka box, hitman Reborn, zombie lonen, lonely, needless many more I can name.
@EXO Kai is my Michael Jackson An amazingly underrated one, like that twist about Allen is just fucking, wow. I love D. Gray Man, and it has this clear kinda gay pairing (Kanda and Karma). its beautiful art is a plus too.
Saud Bin talib Preach! It also has one of the greatest villain organizations in a Jump title, The Noa family. I place the Noa family in the same tier as the League of Villains, Phantom Troupe and CP9 in terms of being great. Also, Millenium Earl is awesome.
The thing is, D.Gray Man is pretty old title. At that time it might have been overrated actually. I started to watch anime around 2008-2009 and I remember people were talking about 3 shounens: Soul Eater, Reborn, and D.Gray Man. All those teenagers who are in community for several years, 5 tops, they have so many shounens, they don't look back. And so they miss D.Gray Man in particular.
@@oleksandrbyelyenko435 yep but D.Gray Man was quickly forgotten after the anime ended and after the manga took a hiatus and was removed from Weekly Shonen Jump not many people are talking about it right now like My Hero Academia,Black Clover, and even Edens Zero
D. Gray Man is like a home you can always go back to. Not only is it a masterpiece already, but it gives such a nostalgic and familiar vibe, that no matter what, DGM is DGM.
Too me one of the best things of this series is everytime Allen says: "I am Allen Walker, I am an exorcist". That quote is so interesting, because it feels like Allen also says it to himself everytime he says to some character. Almost as if he needs to say it, because he doesn't have anything else in his life. That makes everything more depressing and interesting in terms of Allens mental condition
I feel like this was really stamped wen he finally awakened the klown king form. Evrytime he said it i felt he had full accepted something he had feared about himself and his place in the world
I think what draws people to D.Gray-Man is that it's one of the few shounens (if not the only one) that's completed a perfect bait and switch. From the beginning, it seems like your stereotypical anime. Even similar "bait and switches" like HxH had some foreshadowing to allude to some of the world's darker tones, but there isn't anything like that in DGM. Then, when people start dying, it hits like a truck. It's my number one series for a multitude of ways, but I think the biggest is in how, almost like Gintama, it seems to skip genres. The first act is mainly your stereotypical action shounen like Bleach, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fire Force, etc. Where characters fight and use some good worldbuilding to draw people in. Then, when the first act ends (when *that* scene happens, if you've seen the show/read the manga you know what I mean. I'll give you a hint: bamboo) it completely changes to something *way* darker. People start dying, characters fail in their missions, and the plot becomes more convoluted. Then, when the next *that* scene happens (hint:14) DGM *really* takes a hard turn into seinen territory a-la Tokyo Ghoul. There's still action in the series, but now its mainly focusing on the psychology of the main character and his evolution/character development. It's truly insane how much work has gone into it. And it helps that Allen Walker is probably one of the most well-written MCs in the genre. Hell, currently in the manga, none of us knows if he's gonna end up as a good guy, or the main antagonist, and that's something that's simply sublime.
Kokou no hito and narutaru are also one of those "bait" manga where you think it's a simple manga but they're ended up throwing mindf"kery psychological at you.
When u say the beginning how early are you talking because we see how corrupt the Black Order are in Reverse Town arc when Lenalee talks about her past.
"because it has such a devoted fan base" you're absolutely right, we may not get the chapters often but dammit is it worth it. we're in for the long haul and we LIKE it
does anyone know why it is taking so long for chapters to come out? It has made me lose interest because I never know when the new chapters will come out. When this was a weekly release, it was one of my favourite mangas to read.
@@emerystheimmortal417 author suffered health issue, so it went on a few years of hiatus. Now it is like every 3 months for a chapter, some of the newer art u see in the video is from the current runs
I was so crushed by that. I memorized that song. Soon as I read your comment, it started playing in my head. DGM is so melancholy, but so beautiful in so many ways.
Hoshino's art is one of the biggest reasons I started drawing. I still have no grasp on how to make illustrations that are as good as hers or how to color as beautifully as her but I admire DGM more than any other series. I wish it got the attention and possible anime reboot it deserves. I feel bad for Hoshino that Hallow happened.
if you haven't, i strongly recommend investing in the DGM: Noche artbook, all of the artwork is so so so incredible and sensei's commentary and interviews are really funny and clever too
@SoulReaper 85 I watched it on release way back and I also thought that adaptation was pretty much a disgrace. There were two stories crammed in it that deserved at least a season each and were underdeveloped because of the lack of screen time. All in all it was too rushed and a big waste of such a perfect tragedy. And the worst part is that there is no way the writers didn't notice it. I'm just an interested fan and even I noticed that all the heavy plotlines and twists simply did not have the time to get set up and presented, it was just infodumped on the audience and left there.
@@KatsuragiNamika yeah i agree as soon as i saw the trailer for hallo i was immediately disappointed as something was of with design of the characters and the animation itself just looked awful
D.Gray-Man has haunted me for damn near 20 years now, I always find my mind drifting back to it no matter how long I let new chapters build up for bingeing. The mysteries and the characters and the world design are all just so unforgettable, I won't be able to rest until the very final chapter is complete. Every new twist in the tale is so mind boggling, and the mysteries on top of mysteries inside of mysteries makes it easy to obsess over. Like how Allen Walker can't even BE Allen Walker without time travel shenanigans, or the great secret the Bookmen know, or why Tykki Mikk looks so much like young Mana, or, or, or....! Also I definitely agree with you that the first anime series is well worth the watch. Many, if not most? of the episodes had little end credit shorts that were SUPER cute and hilarious, absolutely worth hunting them down!
i havent followed dgrayman in years, but even i never hesitate when people ask me what my most recommended anime/manga is, from someone who stopped watching for maybe 5-10 years already since my childhood. It's always dgrayman first, alongside shaman king and few other rom coms for the luls. I absolutely love music, and I would attribute a huge chunk to the emotional power DGM's soundtrack has! First time i heard the 14th song again, possibly 7 years after the first time i heard it while watching on a fat ancient TV screen, i could remember almost every line note for note even if not for word. Hoshino really knocked everything out of the park with this and ill never not love DGM even if i never have the time to reread everything from the start to refresh again. Always in love, and i wish best of health and happiness to the author, for this absolutely mind blowing masterpiece it is what she deserves
I think that's the biggest problem the show/manga has tho. Kandas story is the ONLY question answered in like what? 20 years of it's run time. And the answer to the question of "who's kanda looking for" in the very first episode he appeared in is actually just even more questions. Hell we don't even know what the earl and the Noah actually want after all those years. It's just more and more questions. The existence of Nea isn't an answer to a question, it's just a bunch of new questions. When we do get answers to questions it's always a few pages after the question was asked. Meanwhile the show has just become a huge pile of "why"s and "how"s.
I still go back to read D. Gray man from time to time. Doesn't matter if the release is slow, it's all top quality. I'd rather have a slow, well-written plot than a sudden, disappointing ending *cough* Kimetsu no Yaiba *cough*
Kimetsu no Yaiba ending wasn't a dusappoint was fine to me, i see worse ending of that. About DGM even if the releases are extremely slow, there is always the possibility the next chapter will be skipped suddly due to the author's health.
Most of hyped series like Attack on Titans and Demon Slayer all ended up as early one hit wonders. Plots were rushed, skewed and eventually lost their appeal as they ended out. D. Gray Man took long, but it's pieces are lining up perfectly for what the story set out to do.
@@tanhongyi7180 I respect your opinion, but the AOT manga is entering peak level of storytelling. I have no idea if you’re caught up, but the main protagonist has completely subverted all expectations. The stakes are so high that every release puts me on edge. AOT gives me the same feelings as DGM.
Demon slayer ending is consider ok and acceptable. Compare to the 2 of big 3 manga Bleach and Naruto, these ending and dragging plot is pure BS. These 2 manga could ended as legend, but their closing really sucks. Demon slayer do well because it ended while the popularity still there.
i really aggree with you! It always makes me so sad that this masterpiece is so... Ignored. Even among my friends who likes manga, no one has ever heard of it. And if I never stumbled upon D Gray Man when I was a child, I would have completly missed it... To think that THIS was my first anime, it definititively makes me even sadder that it is so unknown
Always a pleasure to hear you talk about this masterpiece. You're one of the few, if not the only one, to keep sharing our love for this series with great quality in your videos. Smooth editing, osts well chosen fitting with your calm voice. Happy Halloween to you all!
I remember there were a bit of Allen Walker's origin reveal. Allen himself was the one who propose the idea to house Nea inside himself. With Marion as the co-conspirator to ensure that Allen would survive long enough to Nea to reemerge . However, it wasn't the child Allen that you see in the circus, but an adult Allen. Adult Allen who was wearing long white coat that reminded me of the science division in the Black Order. Then it jumped to Allen being a child in the circus with Marion observing him interacting with Mana from a top a tree branch in secret. When Nea first appeared and look into the mirror, he noted that Allen became younger than the last time he saw him. This part is still left unanswered.
It makes me happy to see you also talk about Hoshino's growth and skill as an artist, and how it really helps her storytelling. I love her work so much, and it makes me sad how much it hurts her physically to work on her story. I just hope she doesnt push herself too much.
I think that maybe the name “goodbye to Allen Walker” is not necessarily talking about the disappearance of the protagonists, but maybe it’s just metaphor for saying goodbye to the mask he is wearing. Because in recent chapters it was revealed that after losing his mind, Mana doesn’t seem to remember Red (the first name of the protagonist) and he confuses Red for his dog called Allen. Because of guilt for hurting Mana and the death of the dog, Red takes the name Allen for the sake of helping Mana. This is the moment where he truly starts to lose his true nature hiding it behind a mask. Telling his story to Kanda, I think is the moment he starts to take of the mask and maybe thus the arc is called “Saying goodbye to A.W.”, because he is stoping his play in front of other people and revealing himself. Also when Cross was killed and Tim delivered the message to Allen of Cross saying to stop wearing Mana’s mask is also foreshadowing of the death of Allen Walker as a mask and the rebirth of Red or some other version of the protagonist that is the best of both Allen and Red. Because it sure isn’t easy to turn back to Red after all these ears playing Allen. That has changed him and he will never be again Red. But also he can’t be Allen forever not if he wants to unravel the truth behind the war. I’m positive that the title in itself may mean the disappearance of A.W. But maybe not in the way of death of the protagonist but metaphorically. Also it is possible that Allen, Nea, Mana and the Earl may merge into one persona but I would rather believe that Allen will find a way to bring peace to Noa clan like he does to the demons, because as Cross says this isn’t their world anymore and Noa are only the vengeful spirits left lingering from the past.
I wouldn't go and say Noah are 'literal demons' . Honestly I enjoy Noah's a lot more because D.Gray-man makes something many shounen do not do. Give almost as much screen time to the 'bad guys' as it gives to the 'good guys'. Noah actuallt feel like a family who care about each other. We had thought it was black and white world but as the manga gone on we saw it was a completely gray one at best. Also I love your voice it is so soothing.
D.Gray-Man is one of the best manga/anime series I’ve read period. Hoshino’s art and storytelling are on point despite the slow releases. Glad to hear you talking about, it truly is a masterpiece in my eyes ❤️🙏🏻🔥
This vid solidify D.Gray-Man as my top 5 manga of all time. It's such a different kind of shounen series. The best way to put it is a tragedy which isn't something common for the demographic. Allen is not just one of my favorite mcs but favorite characters. He feels so really. He acts like if any of us were in his situation which also applies to the other characters. Such a strong supporting cast. If you're wondering what my other 4 they are detective conan, gintama, bloom into you and vinland saga.
There are so many times in D. Gray-Man I have cried and mourned along with the characters facing their trials, not only because it's 'supposed to be' sad, but because you can actually empathize with what is being felt, not to mention a character's possibility for failure is very real. Hoshino writes her characters in a way that makes you fall in love with them, even when they're aloof and sometimes insufferably stubborn. To this day I can't read or watch what happened between Kanda and Karma because that tragic concept of love transcending time, gender, death, and reality hits so hard that it hurts. You rarely see a story in Shonen Jump that hits such a heavy topic and issue. It's not a story where you know for sure if you leave and come back that everyone will still be okay and alive and well. It's not like Naruto where you know you can come back at anytime and Naruto and the other two will definitely be alive because, well, plot, I guess? Kanda's got a limited amount of his own time, who knows who will win between Allen and the 14th, just who will Lenalee choose to pick a side with, and where will Lavi land his alliances with- exorcists or bookmen? They're written and portrayed like real life people who will struggle with making complex decisions of which their answer will have an actual consequence that will affect not just their lives but also world around them. And that's what makes it so good, and that's why to this day I still find myself thinking of Allen, humming Lala's Lullaby or the 14th's melody, or checking Hoshino's instagram to see how she's doing. I would love to see another anime adaptation/reboot that would boost it's popularity outside of Japan again, since I think there are so many people out there that would love it, but just don't know about it/see it's not popular in the west, therefore think it's not good. Hopefully one day while we're still alive we'll see it happen again.
D.Gray-Man is on the same level as FMA Brotherhood and Death Note. The only downside is that it's not finished yet. Also, it has one of the best girls ever, Road Kamelot.
Miranda lotte too...her story is in a way sad...100+ jobs, being made fun of, but in the end, she was one of those that strains herself most to protect those around her... She was hardworking and it shows
One of the unanswered questions that bothers me in the story is chapter 215 when Nea talks with Tim and talks about why Allen forgot him and how there exists an Allen from 35 years ago and one in present.
I believe that Allen played role of Jack from Pandora Hearts. He and maybe Road(?) have some crazy plan how made him next Earl so he can became immortal, and being with Road(he ofc lied to her), so now Road leading Allen to the Mansion where everything will be reveiled That was the reason why he gave his body to Nea
Since most people here are dropping spoilers like hot potatoes, that means I might as well as talk about it. The most mind-boggling thing I came across reading this wasn't even the Mana-Millenium Earl plot twist but the fact that Road geniunely asked Cross to kill her. I mean I thought all apostles do their wiping-out-humanity thing from the bottom of their hearts because they belive it to be right, not because they were forced to since it's their purpose. I honestly feel bad for them.
Considring how hunting the process of a Noah aking over is, they do look more like a curse than proper individuals. Road is my favorite character and this part genuinely broke my heart.
To me I thought it was bought up that the Noah are like a parasite to the human host and making the human do the will. The only surprise to me was that they were from a timeline like ours. The world was rebuilt again like noah's biblical story.
Gosh, I feel so old hearing the music again after all these years! It's so nostalgic! I binged this show in like 4 days when I was 14. When I finally hit Episode 99, my brother decided he wanted to watch it with me, so I had to start all over again and I didn't see the ending for another week or two lol.
Very rarely does the UA-cam algorithm recommend something I would consider watching, much less a well written and hugely entertaining video about a series I have a lot of respect and love for. Especially since D-Gray Man content on this platform is incredibly scarce, big up UA-cam and a like to you and your content AlexEnterprises!
I think another lovely thing about the series is how patient it is with its reveals (spoilers!). The fact that Allen is masking so much and is putting on a front to outrun who he used to be and grief itself is a fairly lategame reveal. It gives him a real complexity and sense of being an unreliable narrator for his own emotions that heightens the tone of the story. Kanda's past is held in the wings for 200 chapters, not blown for cheap drama. I also love that consistently, Innocence becoming stronger involves questioning fate and a character's role in the war, which beautifully ties it to development and the themes of the story.
Something great about D.Gray-Man is how one minute everything is sad and the next, I am laughing. That's the main reason the Noah's Ark Arc is my favorite arc. It has the perfect balance plus great character development.
Your theory is really well thought out, I didnt even think of some of the things you did. It made me rewrite some ideas in my head. However, your theory doesn't leave in the place for the supposedly past!Allen who saved Neahs soul and also figured out the soul thing. The pillar thing seems spot on tho. Also in a interview that hoshino had. She said that the series isn't even 40% done. I was also feeling a final arc with this arc but now i know it's another ending note. I think its like a ending of a Era in the arc.
I never wanted to cry in my life while reading a manga but chapter 219 had me FULLY in my feelings. Seeing the Earl leave his body, and emerge as a man with tears of blood, F@ckeD my head up, I immediately re read the chapter. It might be the single best chapter of manga I have ever read. CHAPTER 219 🐐
Nea said something about Allen getting younger, and had a flashback of some guy telling him to take him as a vessel. Then he said good bye my friend. So he couldn't have been the Akuma, but Akuma are like clones of the Earl/Mana so Mana gave Allen that Eye.
The biggest plot twist of my life was literally Mana and how he named Allen. I was shocked and cried a week about it. It was so cruel. Allen held Mana in a special place in his heart and learning where his name come from hurted so much.
@@ayblablabla Allen was already Red Arm's name prior, Mana was also told by Nea that he'd eventually find him via that name. So I imagine he would've kept on naming any orphan that he took in Allen.
Yeah the dog was named after Allen before he forgot about everything and became a kid. There's even a flashback where in the circus he thinks, I wish I just remembered my name, the one thing I promised not to forget and he has a flashback to his older self. I think Allen will eventually regain his memories again.
The anime honestly doesn't really capture Hoshino's artstyle. So by only watching the anime and reading from where it stops. I feel like you would be missing out in that regard. Plus it's interesting to see how her art style changes throughout the course of the story
@@imsentinelprime9279no one said the anime wasn't good. It's a good anime. It just doesn't hold a candle to the art in the manga, because the manga art is stunning. That's all.
D.Gray-Man has a special place in my heart. There is no other character like Allen Walker. You can feel his suffering and just want him to have a happy ending.
John I highly recommend it. It's a series that I argue just got better and better. Hoshino is a genius and I put her on par with Arakawa in terms of being able to write an incredible series.
The first manga series that I ever bought. It was in the back of a flea market gathering dust and I got 14 volumes for $14, elated to think just how lucky I was to find this gem. Oh man I am so happy you did a video on this!
@@teal2111 I was super lucky! It was a very elderly lady selling them along with other old books. She said it had been there for years and nobody ever bought a single one so she just wanted to get rid of it. It was absolute treasure for me :)
It's amazing you found such a good price outside of Japan. In Japan you can quite often find it for such a price at a second hand store chain called bookoff
Honestly I would prefer a new season once the manga is fully done. I saw a lot of people saying that they want a total remake like HunterxHunter, or what's happening nowadays with Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken... I mean my first issue with Hallow, apart form the graphics, the chara designs, the seiyuu, and the animation that aren't what we could expect 10 years after the old anime, is it doesn't adapt a lot, and even if it does show what's important to the story, the pacing is weird. (I don't really remember but I thought that the episode with Cross Marian and Apocryphios was too sudden. Man, I really didn't like Hallow and I always tell to people to read the manga, or watch the 1st anime (which is as good thanks to the soundtracks, the only fail beeing the animation and pacing), but always read the manga when you come to the Hallow part. (I mean the darkest arc has the most vibrant colors in the anime, it's a miss, it doesn't bring it justice) That's just my opinion of course, but I was nearly as pissed from Hallow than the Berserk 2016 adaptation... (when you see the openings you can tell it'll be good, and then surprise, it's not)
@@Sw3at Totally agree, fam. It's one of those cases where you actually have to read the manga together with the anime. But honestly, I was expecting much worse when I found out they were releasing it. I had the same Berserk vibes as you! Overall, I'd give it a 6/10.
I personally just really disliked the clothes the Noah family is now wearing, it just... takes their personality away? It looks good, but especially like Jasdevi, they had such a fun and recognizable design...
Perfect deconstruction of DGM and why it’s such a great shonen. It’s very unfortunate the series has become underrated in the west. The series has always reminded me of a sort of softer version of Berserk(in more ways than one because the series has so many publishing issues and inconsistent chapters). Guts and Allen from the very beginning, from the moment they were born, are constantly struggling psychologically and are constantly struggling against their destinies. The worlds they live in constantly give them so much shit and tell them to give up, they shouldn’t exist but yet they do and they don’t give in. Allen’s story will probably have it end with Allen disappearing from the world, not actual death(maybe metaphorical if you want to argue) but I have feeling when the final villain is defeated, whoever it is(maybe Apocrophos or God himself, that’s my own theory) he will disappear. Just like Lavi had predicted, they will probably have this sad and heartfelt goodbye, Hoshino has built Allen as a sort of martyr and once he has completed his journey, ending the Noah/Akuma and getting rid of Innocence, Allen will have nothing left. He’s walking a path he does not see, Allen sees no future for himself past defeating Akuma and Innocence. I feel like all of D. Gray-Man is the title of the book Lavi writes to tell Allen’s story, so everyone will know and remember his story. I really do wish this series hadn’t faded to obscurity in the west, it really is amazing. Very happy to see a video like this. Also I love Hoshino’s art, like you said, the art is beautiful, it’s so good. Hoshino can run with other great manga artists like Kubo, Oda, Miura etc. I also will admit while I love this series there are some problems this series has in power scaling but I won’t get into it as I rather keep this comment positive.
I know D Gray Man since my highschool years, because a friend let me borrow his mangas. I fall into it pretty quickly, and start rp with some oc on forums during at least 8 years. It has a powerfull imagery, and a lot of mysteries that has allowed us to play with it and built our own story. I didn't have a lot of theories on the ongoing plot, mainly because I'm not a theorist and that I'm more a passive reader. Except some rp, I never do any fanart, and I never really talk about the manga except to share my love with it with my friends. Spoiler I did see in advance that Mana and the Earl were the same character the moment I see the human face of the later. It looks like too much the Mana we see in Allen's flashback when he is on the Ark's piano room. After that, I start to ask myself how it was possible. Allen see Mana dying in front of him, litteraly, so how the Earl manage to resurrect a soul that was his all along ? Who really is Allen ? Are his memories false ? It could be for what we know, as a result of stress, trauma and the fact that he is the host of Neah. As for the future... I think that Allen will be revealed as the former Bookman's apprentice, which disappear before Bookman takes Lavi. We see Neah talking to someone in a flashback, someone who propose to let him take his body, no matter the cost. We see Marian be very surprise when he see "Allen" for the first time, far more young that what he expect. We know by Sheryl Kamelot that Bookman was very close to the Noah's clan before Neah kill most of them, so close that he threatens Lavi's life to gain information on the 14th. For the Earl, Mana and Neah, I wonder what was the first reason for the Earl to scind himself into two boys. Why not just one ? Was he trying to stop himself to becoming a pillar and bring the apocalypse once again ? Are the brothers the two faces of the same coin ? Neah didn't make any alliances with the Innocence, since Apocryphos try to absorb Allen, and to be honest, after what we saw, I can understand why. Neah had mutliple partisans on both camps, so, what was his proposition on this war ? Nobody is really given a choice to become a Noah or an Exorcist, it's the Memory/Innocence that choose you, which make them the "chosen" ones of an hidden war. Exorcists can't even doubt the innocence or they are threatens by rejection, the Noah's Memory is slowly eating their host. Did Neah try to stop the war, or did he try to change the power dynamic by bringing a third choice, one where Innocence and Noah need to be destroyed to free humanity ? I find this very interesting. The setting in a 19th century, even an alternative one, is perfect for questions on religious themes. I'm waiting for the next chapters to see where this is going. The mysteries are so interesting, and so entertaining.
D. Gray Man got me through some of my darkest times-and even now when it seems rough-I always turn to the series. It’s a wonderful work of art and mystery. Allen has always been one of my favorite protagonists, one who always hold a dear place in my heart. Thank you for touching on this wonderful amazing series. It’s very in depth and detailed, and perfectly showcases why the series is phenomenal!! Thank you so much for the video,it mad my day. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go reread the series for the zillion things time! Until next chapter friends! And remember to keep walking!
D.Gray-Man is a show that I picked up at random many years ago because I was looking for something to fill my time over summer break in high school, and honestly, it's never disappointed me. The characters, the settings, the overall themes are so rich that I don't mind how long we have to wait to see what happens next. I had finally convinced my husband to watch the series right before Hallow came out and we made some time to watch it together, and he fell in love with it just as much as I did. I really think this show has something for almost anyone. And just like another comment said, they pull the bait and switch really well. At the beginning of the series, it seems like it's going to be any other hero's story, that we're going to see Allen grow alongside his friends. And while that is true at least on a base level, there's so much more there that we never could have seen in the beginning. Hoshino took her time with each of these characters, their backstories, personalities, and you can really see it shine through. And then the darker aspects start to come in; people start dying, you learn of Lenalee's background at the Black Order and the mental breakdowns she had before her brother arrived there, and that shows just why Komui is so overprotective of her in the present, even if it's initially played off as a funny protective brother trope. *Spoilers Here that you didn't discuss* In the episode "Homecoming" where they all make it home from the ark thanks to Allen's piano playing, the moment where they lift up signs saying "welcome home" got me. And then when Lenalee ran to Komui like she had been away from him for so long, like she never thought she'd see him again, oh my god, I cry every time I see it, even to this day. This is one of the most long-winded comments I've written in a while, but I absolutely love this show and manga with everything that's in me.
D. Gray Man is the only anime that stuck with me since elementary and I'm currently in college, the updates with the manga just kept on getting better and better as we go into the past of the Millennium Earl
D. Gray-Man is the second anime I've ever watched when it was on Netflix. I wasn't entirely fond of it yet, since it was completely different from the show I previously watched. But not even 10 or so minutes into it, I fell head over heels in love with the show. I began buying the manga, went 3 years without knowledge that the show continued after Netflix, watched those. Went to Kissanime (rip) to watch the rest that wasn't on UA-cam and was in love with HALLOW, though wish it would have continued on but understandable as to why it hadn't. D. Gray-Man = 100/10
@@kwar3606 Haha, yes. At one point. But it was removed in 2014. It was such a hard time for me, because it wasn't the only anime at that time that I was binging! :(
This is 100 percent masterpiece. It explains why I came back searching for dgrayma every month since this is release. Sometimes I see that I already have comment in the video i watching years ago or months ago.
Dude you deserve so much more attention this the anime UA-cam community. I’ve been watching you for a while and the quality of your content is so high it’s amazing
My gosh, when you mentioned how the fights have real stakes, the flood of memories of the fights, the amount of exorcist and civilians that gave their lives to help them progress, that top tier exorcist Tikki killed, forgot how much this show has no plot armour, deffo have to re watch now 😊
It's thanks to this video I gave D grayman a try & it was a wonderful experience! I started with the anime which was alright but quickly switched over to the manga which was phenomenal especially as you get to witness just how far the artwork has improved compared to the initial chapters! I will admit that the series takes its time to get going but after around 40 chapters the story really kicks off & you feel like you're on a roller coaster!
Probably the one of the parts about Crowned Clown is that it completely foreshadows traits of Allen's personality. The whole pierrot is based on a determined clown while sometimes Allen wears the Clown's mask ("Mana's mask"). Meanwhile, the Sword of Exorcism is a reverse version of both Mana and Nea's swords. Whatever is the connection the swords have is yet to be revealed but I love when even the weapons or power fit so well the character.
I'm not gonna lie, I cried through some parts of this. D.Gray-man is one of the first real animes I watched and seeing it put together like this was really fulfilling. The music in this series is also genius cuz no matter how many times you go back to it, the tune is still melancholy of the struggles Allen faces and all the relationships he's made and how he is bound to two opposing parties. Thank you for an amazing video!
To be honest, thank you for this video. D.Gray-man is one of my favourite works. It was my first manga I read without knowing the anime. I spent such a good times reading this manga and a lot of emotions. Seeing that there are people that sitll loving it like I do makes me happy. I love the story and, of course, I am hyped with the mystery you have mentioned, I spend lots of hours thinking about theories. And a think I want to mention is that last chapter was around 17 pages and it was two months after the previous one. I am wondering if Hoshino-sensei is going to release a chapter every two moths. I hope so 'cause I love the story, and Road. Please, recommend this story so much, Hoshino-sensei deserves it.
I love how the story emphasized the struggle of the characters bcoz for some reason, I can feel and relate to their emotions whenever I watch or read the anime. Some people are hating on Lenalee for being annoying and constantly crying, but for me even as a kid watching this series, I understand her situation. Seeing her comrades suffer and she can't do anything to help them, I totally understand her reason to be whiny. And let's not forget that she's still young and the others too. So being in a young age and treated as a weapon to win a war, how can you blame her? Their struggles are the thing that makes their characters feel real and relatable. And I love it.
Not me crying from just reading the comments and not even starting the video yet. I was literally just looking up a game walkthrough and i saw this on my suggested and I HAD TO. I HAVE A DEEP, EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO THIS SERIES. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. I really wish I knew people who knew and loved/appreciated it. ALSO, I KNOW NOW THAT A NEW CHAPTER WAS RELEASED. THANK YOU. NOW I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO LOOK AT BABY RED AGAIN IN THE PREV CHAPTER
OMG man, I appreciate you SO MUCH for talking about this series as much as you have. It is legit one of my favorites from my childhood, and its a goddamn tragedy that so many people have forgotten about it over the years. Great job, seriously!
I will hold on to life as long as possible so that I can see the end of D.Gray-Man. I will literally KEEP WALKING so that one day this series may be over and we'll all get the conclusion we desperately search for.
I would like to thank you for talking about D.Gray Man. No one mentions this show and its awesome. The manga has been on fire lately. Releases are scare but at least they're consistent unlike other manga... cough..... berserk, Hunter X hunter ....cough
I just realized that it’s almost been 10 years since I watched the anime. I loved this series so much I even learned the 14th melody on piano because I loved the song so much. It’s fantastic, the fans who are dedicated to this series after all this time is proof that we all love a freaking fantastic series.
I feel like that might be for the best though because Hoshino said that his story would be tragic. He probably won't be the same Lavi we knew if he returned, because he was tortured for so long, and it is also possible that Bookman died and that he became the new Bookman. I bed Hoshino is just keeping him away for now, because it isn't quite time for him to appear yet. Maybe he'll appear after the flashback arc or closer to the end of the series. He's the only one out of the main 4 without an arc after all, so I doubt we have seen the last of him.
@@Ammy-q4w even if it’s tragic I wanna know so bad lol . I mean I mostly like D.gray man because it’s pure tragedy which you don’t normally see . I get your point though , and I agree that it’s probably not the best time to show his story now . But still I’m just so curious because I’ve never seen such a mysterious character before . We literally know next to nothing about him . I would love a full arc about him but I would probably be 30 by them lol
I always think most of lavi's behavior is act. We finally see real lavi without lies. He saw so many wars and there could be so disgusting thins in wars, Lavi always watch this pain and bad side of humans.
Amazing video, wish you didn't praise Hallow though. What we don't need is another continuation but rather a reboot and I'll die on that hill. Hallow was pretty bad and lots of important dialogue were missing. In the manga Allen literally asks Mana if he's going to get revenge for the dead dog, in Hallow Allen doesn't even know what happened, they bastardised Hoshino's writing here. Even the animation was off for me, look at Apocryphos vs Tyki and tell me thats a well choreographed fight. I'll acknowledge that the art was an improvement to the original anime though at least. A reboot would make this series more talked about, it literally goes under the radar because its a series that takes long breaks causing the anime to also suffer. A well executed reboot would change this issue. Furthermore Hunter x Hunter didn't even need a reboot but it ended up with one anyway. Not only that, Hallow came way to close to the current stuff in the manga due to it sandwiching several chapters into only 13 episodes. We deserve better than what TMS Entertainment had to offer us.
Also look at the backlog sales the manga for HxH ended up with just off the 2011 anime reboot. D.Gray-Man could really benefit if it were to get a reboot.
I don't know if I want a reboot :'( I really like the original cast ( the first anime was amazing... though there is a lot of episodes that didn't follow the manga I like the fact that we see the fight between Tyki and Daisya -even if it was short- or this kind of moments... ) ... Well if D Gray Man become more popular thanks to it reboot, it would be good if new fans give a chance to the first anime because it really deserves it ! sorry for my bad english
@@vilmapar1983 the current artstyle in the manga is more polished but I get what you mean, it was a weird change up for the anime. Should’ve kept the colour pallet the way it was
i wanna save this video for whenever i draw my webtoon,to listen while i draw, your commentary is so calming and you make even the most nonimportant things sound as if they where tails of EPICs,which is a good thing
I hope when the manga was finished they will finally adapt the remaining arcs in the anime and I hope they'll bring back the dark and gloomy gothic art style of the anime and take their time on the animation so the fight scenes will look comparable to the first anime series that consist of over 103 episodes or probably much better animated fight scenes considering the huge progress of Japan's animated technology.
Sometimes, in the middle of a normal day, absolutely randomly, I sit down and my mind gets all confused and speculative about the plot. It's like a mystery that always return back to me. Even if I forget about the series for months, a year. I always return back because I simply cannot leave it be. It's living in my mind rent-free and I love it.
D.Gray-Man ate me up since I first saw the series around 2008-2009 and ever since then I have been a fan. I love Allen way too much and the story just gets me everytime I rewatch it. Allen's belief to not stop and to keep walking forward helped me a lot and kept me inspired no matter how much it hurts in this life.
I’ve been trying to find people who watched d.gray-man for about 6 years, but I had only found two (if that) That was very surprising to me, because I remember it being a huge thing and everyone I talked to at least knew about it- I will never stop loving d.gray-man, though :) This manga/anime has single-handedly helped me through so much! I even named myself after the main protagonist, Allen :)
I'm so late to the party, but I very recently got into dgm (I finished S1 just yesterday actually). It might be odd of me to say, but I can't help but notice how this fandom preserves this series and truly loves it. The respect I've seen for Hoshino is so overwhelming and amazing. I guess this really was something worth getting into. ♡
Oh man, just started getting back into this series due to seeing the show is on Hulu. Sad that it’s had to go on so manny hiatuses and the creator hasn’t been able to keep the manga in the limelight as it really is a great series. All the twists and turns were interesting, as well as the powers and world just being awesome! Here’s to hoping the series gets a proper ending and more people start to be reminded of or just discover this great story.
I dont think anything has ever reached the amazing aesthetic Dgrayman has. I will always love this series just for the art itself its extremely unique even to this day.
I smiled all through out the video. Your voice coupled with the beautiful music from D Gray Man is really relaxing. D Gray Man is one of my all time favourite anime, I cried and smiled at the same scenes that I watched the first time again at the second, the third and so on. I would never get tired watching this anime, I love it in all its entirety. I love our protagonist, his friends, the Antagonists and the Villain's that you love so much, that you would wish there are the good guys. Another thing that I love is that the 'Gray' in D Gray Man is literally what this series shows us, there is no good and bad, the world is gray. There is no organisation that is fighting for good without doing evil to achieve the good, without a 'necessary evil'. There are no bad guys, that are only evil, but have a family they love and an everyday life that they life and that they too suffer in those fights to achieve their goal. There is no protagonist who unnaturally and far too fast overcomes a trauma or loss, that has no problems thanks to the power of friendship or because their fight for justice is more important, but still struggle, have real struggles and problems that may never lessen. People who face problems, in areal hard way to overcome themselves and get stronger, it just feels relateble and real, far more real than most other anime or series. It shows that justice is not something simple and for everyone the same, that its more complex and with the art and music just fitting so good to it, makes it just the more complete and incredibly beautiful. I heard a quote once and I feel like it somehow fits right now(don't know why): The Clown- Knowing that he can't fight against fate and change it, is he still going forward and hiding all his suffering and pain behind a mask of paint and a smile. All my love to D Gray Man and it's creator, for may it be still as beautiful as it is till the end. ❤️ (Sorry if my English is bad and for the long text, but I felt like I needed to convey my emotions)
D. Grey Man is truly genius it really deserves more love! I watched this years ago and I I still think about it. It is definitely in my top 10! I love the aesthetic, the characters that have actual development and relatable qualities!
Thank you. Thank you so much. This Manga is so unique and tragic and means so much to many people I know. Including me. I cried watching this video. Every chapter means that I will theorize with friends for hours on end. Especially the latest few chapters about Allen´s childhood that brings even more tragedy that I ever thought a Shounen protegonist could bear. The development of Kanda and Allen´s relationship, the many similarities between Alma and Allen. I am by now convinced that Kanda and Allen will both die in the end, and that their mutual understanding of each other through their honesty will be the saving grace of this tragic world. This manga is a masterpiece and I am always so happy to see people appreciating it.
Wow I haven't thought about D.Gray-Man in like 9 years but man you flooded my brain with many fond memories! Thank you and I need to rewatch this asap! Rn I'm getting caught up on Inuyasha 😁.
I watched D. Gray-Man when i was in middle school. It was one of my first anime. I watched it like ten times since then. For me, it was perfect. Every character ( evil ones included ) was unique in my eyes and so complete. And all the music is just genius. While watching the anime or reading the manga you realise how much detail and effort was put in every aspect. I am 26 now and i think i will just watch the anime again. Thanks for this video !

This is such a fine description of him.
To be fair there was many characters that was unique back then in the 90s,20s, to the 12,or 13 but no one talks about them anymore. Oh remember claymore,Medaka box, hitman Reborn, zombie lonen, lonely, needless many more I can name.
So true
@EXO Kai is my Michael Jackson An amazingly underrated one, like that twist about Allen is just fucking, wow. I love D. Gray Man, and it has this clear kinda gay pairing (Kanda and Karma). its beautiful art is a plus too.
D.gray man is an underrated gem in my eyes

D-Great Man
Too me one of the best things of this series is everytime Allen says: "I am Allen Walker, I am an exorcist". That quote is so interesting, because it feels like Allen also says it to himself everytime he says to some character. Almost as if he needs to say it, because he doesn't have anything else in his life. That makes everything more depressing and interesting in terms of Allens mental condition
Oh God... that really hits different now that you’ve said that
My favorite part is when Allen says "I'm the D.Gray-man"
Truly one of the moment of all time
I feel like this was really stamped wen he finally awakened the klown king form.

Hoshino's art is one of the biggest reasons I started drawing. I still have no grasp on how to make illustrations that are as good as hers or how to color as beautifully as her but I admire DGM more than any other series. I wish it got the attention and possible anime reboot it deserves. I feel bad for Hoshino that Hallow happened.
if you haven't, i strongly recommend investing in the DGM: Noche artbook, all of the artwork is so so so incredible and sensei's commentary and interviews are really funny and clever too
My watercolor style today is all thanks to Hoshino,
@SoulReaper 85 A lot is wrong with Hallow, especially pacing

SAME!!
I love it too
I think Kandas backstory was so well written
It was really unique and not revealed to soon

@@alexenterprises1 What do you think of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga?

I think its good that the mangaka has a hiatus from 3 moths
D.Gray-Man is a masterpiece.
@pumpkin knight funny enough I didn't like the gintama anime but I love the manga
@pumpkin knight fair. The jokes aren't as funny in the anime compared to the manga. I laughed more when I read the manga
yes we can
There are so many times in D.
Death Note isn’t on that level lol first season was dope though
"what do you wanna be when you're older" bro i wanna be goth queen road kamelot
I love Road too fucking much!
Road's song when he killed that general still creeps me out to this day fr
Miranda lotte too...her story is in a way sad...100+ jobs, being made fun of, but in the end, she was one of those that strains herself most to protect those around her... She was hardworking and it shows
Been following this series for probably 12 years, super happy to see there’s still such an interest in the series and devoted following. Awesome video
One of the unanswered questions that bothers me in the story is chapter 215 when Nea talks with Tim and talks about why Allen forgot him and how there exists an Allen from 35 years ago and one in present.
SAME I have been pondering this for... omgosh... 4 or 5 years. wow I didn't realize how much time has passed.
Same man, I really wanna know about Past Allen, if it’s even the Allen we know
I believe that Allen played role of Jack from Pandora Hearts. He and maybe Road(?) have some crazy plan how made him next Earl so he can became immortal, and being with Road(he ofc lied to her), so now Road leading Allen to the Mansion where everything will be reveiled
That was the reason why he gave his body to Nea

@@biazacha I know, I want her to survive in the end. I wonder what Hoshino has in store for her.
Wait, what??? When did this happen??
Finally someone make a recent video on D.gray-man!
I love d.gray-man
Gosh, I feel so old hearing the music again after all these years!
Wow, thank you! I hope you enjoyed! :)
When people ask why I love dgrayman so much I often struggle to explain my thoughts, and this video literally puts all the answers on my face lol
Allen held Mana in a special place in his heart and learning where his name come from hurted so much.
better than "Red arm" lol
@@ayblablabla Allen was already Red Arm's name prior, Mana was also told by Nea that he'd eventually find him via that name. So I imagine he would've kept on naming any orphan that he took in Allen.
Yeah the dog was named after Allen before he forgot about everything and became a kid. There's even a flashback where in the circus he thinks, I wish I just remembered my name, the one thing I promised not to forget and he has a flashback to his older self. I think Allen will eventually regain his memories again.
@@siginotmylastname3969 but Mana didnt remembered that. He named him after his dead dog, not the "old" Allen.
D. Gray-Man in a Nutshell: *Well, at least thing can't get worse...*

Or plot twist after plot twist
No, but wait theirs more!
@@vorx2003 I am so afraid the get not properly resolved

The anime honestly doesn't really capture Hoshino's artstyle. So by only watching the anime and reading from where it stops. I feel like you would be missing out in that regard. Plus it's interesting to see how her art style changes throughout the course of the story
welp I guess I'm passing this series. I dont like manga. And since the anime isn't good apparently, this is going in the trash.
@@imsentinelprime9279no one said the anime wasn't good. It's a good anime. It just doesn't hold a candle to the art in the manga, because the manga art is stunning. That's all.
D.Gray-Man has a special place in my heart. There is no other character like Allen Walker. You can feel his suffering and just want him to have a happy ending.
i like how at the start hes a very good and innocent kid after that he became smarter and more stubborn lol such good character developments
Damn I freaking gotta read this
John I highly recommend it. It's a series that I argue just got better and better. Hoshino is a genius and I put her on par with Arakawa in terms of being able to write an incredible series.
@@Avarn388 Thank you. I'll probably start it today
You definitely should, it’s my number one series ahead of Hunter X Hunter, Gintama, and Berserk. It definitely gets better as you go along.
I haven't read this too, gonna read it's after I finished my currently reading manga.
Omg same and I’m so excited to get the manga in a few days!!! God bless you all!
The first manga series that I ever bought. It was in the back of a flea market gathering dust and I got 14 volumes for $14, elated to think just how lucky I was to find this gem.
Oh man I am so happy you did a video on this!
thats a crazy bargain

It's amazing you found such a good price outside of Japan. In Japan you can quite often find it for such a price at a second hand store chain called bookoff
Easily one of my all time favorite anime and manga series and cannot wait for more manga chapters to come out
D.Gray-man Hallow was actually pretty good. I really would love to see another season of the anime
(I mean the darkest arc has the most vibrant colors in the anime, it's a miss, it doesn't bring it justice)
That's just my opinion of course, but I was nearly as pissed from Hallow than the Berserk 2016 adaptation...
@@Sw3at thank you, Hallow wasn't good at all. There were some good points but overall I want better for a series I consider top tier.
Spoiler
I did see in advance that Mana and the Earl were the same character the moment I see the human face of the later.
*Spoilers Here that you didn't discuss*
In the episode "Homecoming" where they all make it home from the ark thanks to Allen's piano playing, the moment where they lift up signs saying "welcome home" got me.
D. Gray-Man = 100/10
IT WAS ON NETFLIX???!
@@kwar3606 Haha, yes. At one point. But it was removed in 2014. It was such a hard time for me, because it wasn't the only anime at that time that I was binging! :(
I remember watching it when I was younger and it just was so unsettling that I couldn't really watch it at the time.
D gray man is one of those animes that made me feel again the way clannad did
This is 100 percent masterpiece.
Aw thank you so much, the only attention I want is from people like yourself 👍🏼
My gosh, when you mentioned how the fights have real stakes, the flood of memories of the fights, the amount of exorcist and civilians that gave their lives to help them progress, that top tier exorcist Tikki killed, forgot how much this show has no plot armour, deffo have to re watch now 😊
It does have some plot armour, nothing is immune to that lol but there were definitely stakes too.
It’s genuinely my favourite anime & manga series and it’s so wild that no one ever seems to talk about it
To be honest, thank you for this video.

Your theory of there being final arc sounds amazing and fits. I love what you're saying
I just realized that it’s almost been 10 years since I watched the anime. I loved this series so much I even learned the 14th melody on piano because I loved the song so much. It’s fantastic, the fans who are dedicated to this series after all this time is proof that we all love a freaking fantastic series.
Im just mad because we still don’t know what happened to Lavi . The last time we saw him was 2011 smh
D.Gray-Man was my gateway into anime. truly a masterpiece
Thanks so much for covering this! Love your D.Gray-Man videos. We are a small yet devoted Fandom, indeed.
D. Gray Man deserves a reboot 😭
A GOOD reboot
So the current anime isn't good?
Ngl I preferred the old anime art. There was no need to make Hallow be so... Polished? And glossy. That's not what D.Gray-Man is
I don't know if I want a reboot :'( I really like the original cast ( the first anime was amazing... though there is a lot of episodes that didn't follow the manga I like the fact that we see the fight between Tyki and Daisya -even if it was short- or this kind of moments...
Should’ve kept the colour pallet the way it was
D.Gray-Man : INNOCENTS
i wanna save this video for whenever i draw my webtoon,to listen while i draw, your commentary is so calming and you make even the most nonimportant things sound as if they where tails of EPICs,which is a good thing

Alan Walker would have to be my favorite protagonist from Shonen Jump
I’ve been trying to find people who watched d.gray-man for about 6 years, but I had only found two (if that)
That was very surprising to me, because I remember it being a huge thing and everyone I talked to at least knew about it-
I will never stop loving d.gray-man, though :)
This manga/anime has single-handedly helped me through so much!
Yay finally an anime video essay on one of the most underrated (and beautiful) shonen/horror manga, ty!
D gray man deserves so much more attention than it gets... its an absolute masterpiece
Bless you for notifying me of the discord server and for talking about this amazing series
Alexenterprise: OK ima explain the mystery of d gray man
Me: hoho, daring are we?
(Sorry if my English is bad and for the long text, but I felt like I needed to convey my emotions)
D. Grey Man is truly genius it really deserves more love! I watched this years ago and I I still think about it. It is definitely in my top 10! I love the aesthetic, the characters that have actual development and relatable qualities!
I saw this video a week ago and now I'm on chapter 30 of the manga, just school keeping me away from plain binge reading it. Thanks for the video!!
The best Manga and anime I've ever seen.... This is worth it to watch
Just started rereading this series and I'll gladly continue the anime as well.
the 14th melody in the background gave me shiver!!!! it's been so long since I heard it but sure I remember every word
The recent arc does feel like the final puzzle piece to the story let's see how it goes. I can't thank hoshino sensei enough for this masterpiece
You playing 14th Melody for the background make me cry. I'm sobbing. I love this series so much 😭
