As a kid I was absolutely obsessed with it and I read the manga years later. Thank you for bringing attention to one of my favorite manga/anime of all time, this was my second manga, started reading it because my middle school library happened to have like half the first volume and I immediately fell in love with it, then I found out there was an anime and it was always peak, God it's so good
see to me I think the few arcs, especially Timothys arc, the ones you said were out of place. to me they were there to build up Links character a bit and to introduce and build up the third exorcists while Hoshino was on her way to Kandas backstory arc with Alma Karma. because the third exorcists where kind of important to that arc and so thats really how I rationalize it. also I kinda think of it as.... hey the black orders base was just attacked and several of their friends died, how about they go on a normal mission for once and try to forget about everything right before literally everything changes. I'm so happy you made this video, I wasn't expecting it until the manga concluded (which could be five years off tbh). I got into when I was a freshman in high school, for some reason my school library had a huge manga section and they had volumes 1-17 of D gray man. I picked it up at after band practice and I was spellbound. I love it and to this day it's still one opf my favorites and I'm happy to see it's legacy hasn't been forgotten about even being referenced in HUGE works like JuJutsu Kaisen. I like to write stroies in my free time and DGM has been a huge influence for me with the whole gothic aesthetic it has as soul eater. so thank you so much for this video. all your video are awesome btw.

As much as I make fun of the pacing (like the far too long abscence of Lavi), I do understand the mangaka's circumstances and need for a less harsh workstyle. We can only wish Hoshino-sensei the best! I do agree that something about Hallow's style felt so...Uncanny. I thought part of it was my nostalgia for the 2000s-anime and how I preferred the more muted colors. But maybe there really is something about it that's...Different. As far as mangaka being involved with their adaptations- it really varies. Going by known accounts, it's way more common to have mangakas just consult the production team (mangakas are busy after all.) But a good production is one that consistently checks with rhe mangaka before doing anything crazy. There's also cases where (1) the publishers mishandle communication, (2) the director doesn't care for the mangaka's input (worst case secnario) or (3) mangakas simply don't care enough or have the time to be involved. Usually the only way anyone knows what happened is if one party (usually the mangaka) talks about it. Shirobako and Oshi no Ko have plotlines addressing this and it's really fascinating. Honestly- even wirh Hoshino's criticism, I don't think her disatisfaction *alone* is what gave Hallow the axe. The first is what you mentioned- there isn't enough material for more. Gone are the days of long running Shounens trying to fill out gaps in the story with Filler arcs. Second- and biggest reason- is that D.Gray-Man's time in the spotlight simply faded after the 2000s anime. D. Gray-Man was a hit in Japan- there was so much merchandise, promotions and even a game. But between the anime ending and the manga going on multiple long breaks- it just couldn't hold onto the momentum. I witnessed the American fandom slowly move on until it was just the really patient fans left. Hallow (with no fault to the production team) missed the chance to maintain the momentum. And it wasn't accessible to a new audience. It was a sequel that required 103 episodes or 10+ volumes of information. The original fanbase faded and it wasn't accessible enough to attract new/casual audiences. Hallow was fighting an uphill battle all around. ANYWAY- love the vid and D. Gray-Man. Thanks for bringing attention to one of my all-time faves!

First of all, this is such an amazing video and thank you so much for beautifully covering the amazingness that is D.Gray-Man! I've personally just got back into watching anime and reading manga after a good 14 year break. Back then, D.gray-man was my absolute favorite manga and it was the only series where I would instantly buy the next volume once it was released at my nearest bookstore. Deciding to catch up and revisit the rabbit hole of D.Gray-man has been such an amazing experience personally. It's amazing how Hoshino-sensei hints at future plot points! Like even though I've read each volume probably 20 times each I STILL realize or notice something new every time! Her world building is just that amazing! She's probably almost on par with J.R.R. Tolkien in that aspect. Personally.... I actually really loved the random zombie arc hehe. Despite the silliness, I think it gives the reader a short break from all the trauma of the plot and allows us to breath and laugh for a little while. Sort of like an intermission. PLUS it gave us long haired Allen and chibi Lavi and Kanda. Just for that, I forgive that random arc hehe. Also, that arc is what introduced me to D.Gray-man in the first place. I had a monthly USA Shounen Jump volume (the only one that had a DGM chapter) that had the 2nd half of that arc in it as a special. The humor and art style is what made me intrigued enough to search for the anime and buy the first volume. So, I personally cannot hate it as it was the entrance to the DGM rabbit hole. ALSO! I agree with you about the anime! It has it's... iconicness, but there's a but of plot stuff that I wish were different. For example, Johnny, in the Manga he actually plays a huge part even despite being just a small side character (before the searching for A.W. arc) but in the anime they make him out to just be a random person. In parts where he's supposed to be there supporting Allen, the anime instead replaces him with Lavi (especially in Hallow and I hated that!) I didn't know about what happened behind the scenes though. (at the time of Hallow airing I was still on my anime/manga break) and it breaks my heart that the producers did that to Hoshino-sensei. If there's anything that I could wish for it'd be a DGM anime reboot where Hoshino-sensei can call all the shots! She can hire who she wants to animate it, she can write the story how she wishes and she use whatever art she wants to promote it! Though it may be years before I may even see that wish come to light, she deserves so much more than what she was given.

I am an artist myself so I can tell that being hold back by healt issues, especially your most important body part, is soul crushing. I only had times of overuse, like when my back and neck hurt as hell but gladly never to the extend of a tendonitis etc. Trust me, the urge to do art just doesn't disappear, it just gets stronger ("I need to rest but I WANT TO DO ART"). So, hearing this comment:"Just hand it over!" is one of the most insulting things you could tell an artist, even if it might help a series to continue. It's not about the readers, it's about the artist wanting to envision their stories,paintings, manga, and so on. You can't just "hand it over" to someone else. It's not that easy as readers make it seem to be. I'd also rather have my work unfinished if I could not continue it instead of letting someone else do it. Or this toxic thing called A.I.. P.S.: I really need to re-read the manga. maybe buy it next time I'm in Japan, your video really made me want to revisit it :)
Lovely seeing my all-time favorite manga being talked about. I remember watching the anime as a child, then rediscovering it right before Hallow came out in 2016. Have been obsessed ever since. Read the manga and have done like at least 3 rewatches of the anime since then and I keep coming back to this franchise every now and then. Absolute favorite. And this video came just in time for my new wave of DGM.
Look D Grayman fans it's 2024 and we got Hunter x Hunter back in weekly shonen jump just stay faithful and don't give up all hope and your series will return too. Cope and hope isn't always a bad thing
D.grayman has continued to be my favorite series since I was in elementary school. And I'm just mentally waiting for the next chapter to drop and shotgun me a second time after the end of the last chapter did. So I can then go to my friend pull out the cork board and red string to try to chart the new map of events and relationships/history. So thank you. Even this as recap for someone is still actively keeping up with it is so nice. Always good to see someone talk about the series.
Yeeeeeeeees! One of the few longer series I've re-watched, but as even that was a while back, it made me feel so validated when I heard someone describe it as "Jujutsu but better". Honestly, it does so much so well. Thanks for this. Though I will say, there are quite a few movements where you start referencing info only reader already know.
I've always been (at least passively) interested in D. Gray Man. But within more recent years once I compiled a list of manga I wanted to read (which I've admittedly made minimal progress on since most manga I'm interested in run for volumes upon volumes) D. Gray Man has been a series that's had a consistent presence in my mind. Once I make my way through Blue Exorcist, D. Gray Man is something I'm excited to start. I used to draw all the time when I was a kid. It was my favorite creative pass-time. I remember seeing Allen's flat tipped enormous sword one time in a manga screenshot and it inspired an innumerable amount of sword designs I conjured in my mind. I always thought it was one of the coolest manga/anime swords I'd ever seen, right up there with Guts' Dragonslayer from Berserk. I also like to credit Lavi for my present appreciation for hammers as weapons. In games like The Elder Scrolls or Fire Emblem the amount of time I've spent making an active effort to equip my characters with hammers is no small quantity.
I'm obsessed with DGM since I was a kid, it's still my favorite manga to this day. I'm simply too in love with the characters, the plot, the mysteries, and the art.
Found it around 2010ish and again last year but I never knew so much of development stuff, it's just too much beautiful art in various forms for a contiguous run. One of the very few I've found that had the level impact that my first few anime had when I was a kid discovering what you yu Hakusho and Dragonball z were. Great work here, new sub!
DGM was such a good series, with a super interesting premise and execution. I remember hearing about it, and not really thinking a lot of it when I started it, but it only got better as it went, and became such a sleeper classic to me. Truly one of the greatest loses in manga and anime that this series is basically in purgatory.
Haha, thanks for the cool retrospective. I've been following this manga for 15 years, maybe someday they'll finally release physical volumes in Poland. Recently, I've had similar thoughts about „Natsume Yuujinchou”, the manga has been coming out in Japan since 2005, it's currently at an interesting plot point and I think we still have a lot to look forward to because it doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.
D. Gray going on hiatus is what drove me to Pandora Hearts. I still love D. Gray, but at this rate, I've accepted that it may never be finished. I will always love it, but now I mostly remember it for driving me to go out and find a similar tale, that ended up being my favorite manga ever.
I've been with dgm since 2012. It was my very first manga and it is incredibly special to me, because the manga was there for me in an extremely difficult time emotionally. (Along with FMA 2003, I didn't even know brotherhood existed and was so happy when I discovered it lol)
I am one of the fans from the old times, i used to read and wait for every chapter until the part where Allen was running away, till some day i forgot allmost all the plot that i was following, now I'm reading all from beginning, DGM still is one of my favorite mangas of all time
In a weird way I never want d.gray-man to end. But obviously I understand it has to eventually. I got used to waiting a really long time for it to progress, and when it does finish I will definitely be very sad.
honestly i am so glad the DGM manga is still being updated even tho it's very slow because i cannot emotionally handle another Nana... i found the anime and manga in 2009 right before it stopped updating and i am still waiting and hoping for an update, i'm a whole ass adult and still get emotional thinking that we may never get a closure 🥲🥲 also i just realized that despite me being against religion** most of my favourite animes/mangas have religious themes f.e. d.gray man, soul eater, trigun, evangelion, death note, ao no exorcist, shaman king and probably many more i don't remember rn xD **(something something people blindly folowing a set of rules thinking that their religion is the only right one and in many cases making people do heinous things against others)
I appreciated the lightheartedness of the Destruction of the Black Order arc. Idk why people hate it lol, the arc also adds to the characterisation of Lenalee and Komui and it would be nice to see the zombified generals fight when DGM gets a reboot. Under-appreciated arc since we only have a couple comedy based arcs in the first place. Furthermore the Invasion arc was amazing, glad Hoshino gave Lenalee another chance to shine after she was unable to face off with the Noah.

I still absolutely love this series, but not having read a chapter in over a year now, and still there basically not being anything in this video that I don't remember reading again makes it really sad that the series is forced to be on such a slow release schedule. I've been following the series for around 10 years now, and it's still at a very similar point in the story now as it used to be back then

The characters are so good and used. Lile Yu, i know he is the ricak character but its great how the relationship is developed beteen fighting an ddistrust a, then annoyence, then afte ryus recent person developements and Allen helping, yeah how he goes to hell and back for his part in that and being ride or die for allen open and showing that. Its really great character work. And ther are so many great characters that are developed well, road probably a favourite. Yeah lanalee is good too, and that scientist nerd. Yeah Mana too how he is even knowin noahs and being egmatic. yeah miranda is great

Yeah, a blood clot that was partially formed due to years of overwork stretching back to the 80’s. Sure, lifestyle & luck factor in, but living a day to day constant work life for so long and still making new art to the day he died with DBS & Daima, and in his own words from volume clover pages, he absolutely was overworked at times and that literally can build up & be fatal. If you’re a successful Japanese manga artist, there’s a 98% chance you’re unfortunately focusing more on the work and your health, especially with the older guard who have been in the game for so long.
The Search for AW arc kind of was too much for me when trying to keep up to date as I lost track of what was even happening. Thanks for the "Catch up." Blind Guess based on what was said in the video could it be a relationship of "GOD" being a king and the Noah family being a vassal family looking over the world of D Gray Man? The Noah's didn't do a good job of managing the world according to their king so they were forced to restart over and over again until eventually wanting to rebel.

So glad i got into this series back in march. Almost caught up with the whole series its soooo good great video!
D.grayman has continued to be my favorite series since I was in elementary school. And I'm just mentally waiting for the next chapter to drop and shotgun me a second time after the end of the last chapter did. So I can then go to my friend pull out the cork board and red string to try to chart the new map of events and relationships/history.
So thank you. Even this as recap for someone is still actively keeping up with it is so nice. Always good to see someone talk about the series.

One of the few longer series I've re-watched, but as even that was a while back, it made me feel so validated when I heard someone describe it as "Jujutsu but better". Honestly, it does so much so well.

I've always been (at least passively) interested in D. Gray Man. But within more recent years once I compiled a list of manga I wanted to read (which I've admittedly made minimal progress on since most manga I'm interested in run for volumes upon volumes) D. Gray Man has been a series that's had a consistent presence in my mind. Once I make my way through Blue Exorcist, D. Gray Man is something I'm excited to start. I used to draw all the time when I was a kid. It was my favorite creative pass-time. I remember seeing Allen's flat tipped enormous sword one time in a manga screenshot and it inspired an innumerable amount of sword designs I conjured in my mind. I always thought it was one of the coolest manga/anime swords I'd ever seen, right up there with Guts' Dragonslayer from Berserk. I also like to credit Lavi for my present appreciation for hammers as weapons. In games like The Elder Scrolls or Fire Emblem the amount of time I've spent making an active effort to equip my characters with hammers is no small quantity.
I'm obsessed with DGM since I was a kid, it's still my favorite manga to this day. I'm simply too in love with the characters, the plot, the mysteries, and the art.

Found it around 2010ish and again last year but I never knew so much of development stuff, it's just too much beautiful art in various forms for a contiguous run. One of the very few I've found that had the level impact that my first few anime had when I was a kid discovering what you yu Hakusho and Dragonball z were. Great work here, new sub!

What fucking blast from the past
DGM was such a good series, with a super interesting premise and execution. I remember hearing about it, and not really thinking a lot of it when I started it, but it only got better as it went, and became such a sleeper classic to me. Truly one of the greatest loses in manga and anime that this series is basically in purgatory.

作者の星野桂先生も大好きです。何度見返しても面白いし、漫画の描き方自体にこんな表現方法があるのかって驚かされます。

Haha, thanks for the cool retrospective. I've been following this manga for 15 years, maybe someday they'll finally release physical volumes in Poland. Recently, I've had similar thoughts about „Natsume Yuujinchou”, the manga has been coming out in Japan since 2005, it's currently at an interesting plot point and I think we still have a lot to look forward to because it doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.

D. Gray going on hiatus is what drove me to Pandora Hearts. I still love D. Gray, but at this rate, I've accepted that it may never be finished. I will always love it, but now I mostly remember it for driving me to go out and find a similar tale, that ended up being my favorite manga ever.

I've been with dgm since 2012. It was my very first manga and it is incredibly special to me, because the manga was there for me in an extremely difficult time emotionally. (Along with FMA 2003, I didn't even know brotherhood existed and was so happy when I discovered it lol)

honestly i am so glad the DGM manga is still being updated even tho it's very slow because i cannot emotionally handle another Nana... i found the anime and manga in 2009 right before it stopped updating and i am still waiting and hoping for an update, i'm a whole ass adult and still get emotional thinking that we may never get a closure 🥲🥲
also i just realized that despite me being against religion** most of my favourite animes/mangas have religious themes f.e. d.gray man, soul eater, trigun, evangelion, death note, ao no exorcist, shaman king and probably many more i don't remember rn xD

I appreciated the lightheartedness of the Destruction of the Black Order arc. Idk why people hate it lol, the arc also adds to the characterisation of Lenalee and Komui and it would be nice to see the zombified generals fight when DGM gets a reboot. Under-appreciated arc since we only have a couple comedy based arcs in the first place.
Furthermore the Invasion arc was amazing, glad Hoshino gave Lenalee another chance to shine after she was unable to face off with the Noah.
I loved that arc too!!!! I personally think it gave us a breather and a chance to truly laugh after so much trauma. Plus, we got long-haired Allen 😍

I still absolutely love this series, but not having read a chapter in over a year now, and still there basically not being anything in this video that I don't remember reading again makes it really sad that the series is forced to be on such a slow release schedule. I've been following the series for around 10 years now, and it's still at a very similar point in the story now as it used to be back then

The characters are so good and used. Lile Yu, i know he is the ricak character but its great how the relationship is developed beteen fighting an ddistrust a, then annoyence, then afte ryus recent person developements and Allen helping, yeah how he goes to hell and back for his part in that and being ride or die for allen open and showing that. Its really great character work.
And ther are so many great characters that are developed well, road probably a favourite. Yeah lanalee is good too, and that scientist nerd.

Yeah, a blood clot that was partially formed due to years of overwork stretching back to the 80’s. Sure, lifestyle & luck factor in, but living a day to day constant work life for so long and still making new art to the day he died with DBS & Daima, and in his own words from volume clover pages, he absolutely was overworked at times and that literally can build up & be fatal. If you’re a successful Japanese manga artist, there’s a 98% chance you’re unfortunately focusing more on the work and your health, especially with the older guard who have been in the game for so long.

The Search for AW arc kind of was too much for me when trying to keep up to date as I lost track of what was even happening. Thanks for the "Catch up." Blind Guess based on what was said in the video could it be a relationship of "GOD" being a king and the Noah family being a vassal family looking over the world of D Gray Man? The Noah's didn't do a good job of managing the world according to their king so they were forced to restart over and over again until eventually wanting to rebel.
