2:40:52 - [BONUS] English Grammar for German Learners
So many German learners make the mistake of trying the ‘instant immersion approach’, which includes a focus on vocabulary and completely ignoring German grammar.
These same students ultimately discover that you can have all the vocabulary in the world, but without the grammar to ‘glue’ it all together, it’s relatively worthless.
Your ADVANTAGE as an adult learner of German is that you can ANALYZE grammar structures, which means you can understand how German works (it’s often quite different from English) in a FRACTION of the time you’d otherwise spend.
The Pareto principle applied to German grammar means that there are 20% of the grammar topics that do 80% of the work for you! This is where you need to start. The ESSENTIALS. The FOUNDATION.
In every aspect of how you learn German, you need to work with PRINCIPLES & PATTERNS (our brains love this approach! it works!). If you understand the WHYs, the HOWs become a whole lot easier!
This video series (all spliced together for your convenience!) takes you from the very beginning of how are you approaching German through the CORE grammar topics you MUST understand to a set of tips that will empower you to continue studying German as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Get ready to JUMPSTART your German learning! It’s time to LEARN GERMAN SMARTER, NOT HARDER.
    I’ll show you how!
    -----------------------------
    IMPORTANT NOTES:
    * (NOUN GENDER) Around the 24-minute mark, I reference countries being a neuter noun group. There ARE exceptions! A handful of countries are masculine (e.g. der Irak). A few are feminine (e.g. die Schweiz). A few are plural (e.g. die USA). But the DEFAULT is neuter and this is important in any instance in which you might use a determiner or adjective before the country's name (e.g. In dem französischsprachigen Kanada ist das Gericht "Poutine" sehr beliebt").
    * (NOUN PLURAL) Around the 35-minute mark, I give 2 sets of examples of common nouns that take the 'no change' plural, but several of nouns I chose to highlight were poor examples because *after 'getting off the train' at 'train stop #1' (with my system that you'll learn in this video), these nouns are further shunted to short, easy exception lists (but I don't specify this in the video).
Firstly, 'Vater', 'Mutter', 'Bruder', and 'Boden' do indeed take the no-change plural ending, as I say --BUT they also belong on a list of 24 nouns that additionally take an umlaut in the plural (Väter, Mütter, Brüder, Böden).
Finally, all feminine nouns ending with -el and -er (there are none that end with -en) ALSO get off the train at train stop #1 and take the 'no change' ending as the first step ... but, then you learn (just not in this video!) that this particular body of nouns also has to add an 'n' (Gabel becomes Gabeln, Schüssel becomes Schüsseln, Schwester becomes Schwestern).
So, sorry! My apologies for not using clear-cut examples and/or not clarifying the essential nuances of the examples I did use. But hopefully it all makes sense to you now. And REMEMBER: smarter learning is always about learning the rule first, exceptions later. :-)

Even as a native English speaker, I still like learning about my own language analytically. I know how to construct and use grammar intuitively, but there's a benefit to learning something from an outsider perspective as well. I find that it improved my formal writing, far beyond what I normally could do.

I totally disagree. Horrible explanations. Reminds me of my university studies on german... Grammar without understanding a message is not knowing a language. One can know all the grammar of a language without being able to communicate in any way. Learning to communicate is an ability that takes from months to years without having any relation to learning grammar. Language acquisition is supposed to be fun and interesting, grammar while not understanding the language is not fun.

Being a native German myself, I remember so well, that when I started to learn English in fifth grade, I was so relieved, that I wouldn't have to learn the gender of every noun there is, or that, apart from some very rare exceptions I could conjugate verbs with ease. Of course English is not completely void of booby-traps, as well, but in direct comparison with German, you are far less likely to get stuck in one.

    • @Steevee5k

@@MrVarunparmar Well, first of all I never searched for this video, it was on a list of suggestions. Maybe because I had watched some language-videos in the past (Japanese and Russian mostly).
However I soon found out , that it can be very interesting to have a look at your own language from the perspective of an outsider. As a native speaker you mostly use your language, without giving much thought to grammatic details, and believe it or not, some of the grammar in this video here was quite a revelation for me as well.

I took three years of German in high school (a little over 10 years ago) and this has honestly really made me appreciate my high school German teacher, as she used a lot, though not all, of the methods you used here. And because of that, despite a decade of atrophy and large holes in my vocabulary, I was able to premptively answer nearly all the exersises you showed in this series. I still have a lot to learn before being fluent in any appreciable sense, but you're not kidfing about how learning like this really gets you to internalize the language. Thanks, Laura, and thanks, Frau Schultz!

bro, it took her 21 minutes only to get out of that bog of useless information that we call 'foreword'. Americans are absolutely the most talented people in speaking on nothing and yet doing it with a very smart and serious face as if actually giving a lecture out to the audience lol. The most ridiculous thing about it all is that other Americans who are listening to the speaker are nodding their heads thoughtfully giving the impression of doing a very hard mental work while in fact, again, all they listen to is some banal homogenious crap containing literally no information on the subject. In other words: laboring the point is what Americans do best

When you learn German grammar as a German student, you are being taught, that the four cases can be designated by the interogative particle, you would use to ask for it.
    The four cases would be:
    Wer-Fall (who-case) - nominative
    Wes(sen)-Fall (whose-case) - genitive
    Wem-Fall (whom-case) - dative
    Wen-Fall (whom/who-case) - accusative
    Examples:
Der Mann geht nach Hause - WER geht nach Hause? - Der Mann (Nominativ)
(The man walks home - WHO walks home? The man)
Das Portemonaie des Mannes ist leer - WESSEN Portemonaie ist leer? -Des Mannes (Genitiv)
(The man's wallet is empty -WHOSE wallet ist empty? The man's)
Der Mann geht mit dem Hund Gassi. - Mit WEM geht der Mann Gassi? - Mit dem Hund (Dativ)
(The man walks with the dog. With WHOM does the man walk? - With the dog.)
Ich habe im Wald einen Mann gesehen. WEN habe ich im Wald gesehen? Einen Mann (Akkusativ)
(I saw a man in the forest. WHO did I see in the forest? A man.)
Of course this system is only practical when you know, what question word to use in the first place, and since the english language doesn't discriminate between "wem" and "wen" , this will not help much, if you are an absolut novice. But perhaps later in your learning career, this may be of some help to distinguish the cases.

I took copious, color-coded notes on this video-those charts are incredible. I feel like I’m taking a great college lecture! Thanks so much for providing clear, concise, and uniquely useful information. I’ll for sure be doing the grammar course.

I can’t even say how helpful this all-in-one declension chart is. I can remember the words for the, a, that, etc. I can even figure out which case each noun is in. But remembering which declension goes where is my downfall. But this chart I can remember. I sat down and drew it out from memory a few times and now it’s in my head. DANKE!

Currently 3/4 of the way through and want to say a massive thanks, Laura. I studied German at school as a teenager, toured German speaking countries in my band in my early 20's, and finally moved to Austria 7 years ago where I still live, and this is honestly the first time in all those years that I feel the fundamentals are finally beginning to make sense to me. I recognise (and you don't hide that fact!) there's aloooot of practice to do for it to be reflexive, but at least now I don't feel this monumental desire to skip and ignore grammar and just make the best out of vocabulary and phrases. The fact you don't hide important things behind a paywall is so appreciated, so many thanks again.
