Thank you so much for your work here. I'm older now and learning another language that has had some influence on Amercian English can be difficult because of bad pronunciations. The way you teach is perfect for my brain. All the little details and WHY they are there is the information I need. Danke

Laura, I love your teaching style. I'm currently taking your German Foundations course and it's terrific!🤗
I am so excited to have found this particular video on sounds and pronunciation.👏
I absolutely love the sound of German and you make it so much easier to understand (and to start in the kiddie pool instead of jumping in the deep in and hoping to swim ).😉
Thank you for the work you do. I look forward to absorbing every single word you say and hopefully sound as lovely as you when I speak the language.🙂

23:10 my German professor in college suggested for umlauts to form the letter with your lips and then try to say a long "e". So make the "o" lips shape while saying "ee" and you can get pretty close to that "ö" sound. 😊

Hi Laura, can you recommend any series to watch as a beginner to practice listening? Hopefully available here at UA-cam! Thanks!

    • @GermanwithLaura
      @GermanwithLaura  11 місяців тому +1

Hi there! Laura actually recommends these stages to learning:
      Grammar
      Vocabulary
      Reading
      Writing
      Listening
      Pronunciation
While getting some beginner listening in sounds like a good idea, having some of the other aspects of German sorted first is our suggestion for success!
      Happy learning,
      Nicole

      Me again.
I had a chance to speak to Laura after a meeting and wanted to correct myself. She said:
"Starting right away with beginner pronunciation while listening to German music and singing along is a great option. Once someone is really reading to jump in, they would want grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening paired together, then writing and pronunciation."
Sorry I got a little mixed up on the progression! So, I don't really have a series to recommend, but any music you can listen to in German would be a good starting place.
Laura also has a video that talks about the learning progression here: ua-cam.com/video/XyvhES5X4kc/v-deo.html
      Best,
      Nicole

Hallo Laura!

An idea here for a future video. Naturally, we are all very different in many aspects (e.g., the sound of our voices, the placement of our voices (some higher, some lower), physiognomy, accents, speaking habits, native languages, other (non-native) languages, learning abilities, age, and so on and so forth). But why is pronouncing German so difficult? Why is it so difficult going from one consonant to the next? What I am referring to is the *physical exertion* often required of a non-native German speaker to string together some basic, simple words into a sentence. I often find myself tensing my neck muscles (both back and sides) or my throat or my jaw or my tongue or my lips, often all of them at once, in order to produce and project the sounds I want and the exertion leaves me feeling exhausted. Also, I notice that native German speakers seem to produce their sounds at the front of the mouth. But I find myself often producing sounds in the back of my throat and then I am too far back to quickly reach the front for the next vowel or consonant. And it is not just going from consonant to consonant but also often, too, from vowel to vowel or consonant to vowel and vice versa. I am aware that insecurity and fear (over losing control in the moment, at any moment ---- control over using the right words, word order, conjugation, pronouns, declensions, and, of course, pronunciation) play a role in all this but is not all. Often if I focus on grammar then the pronunciation goes south. Or the opposite. Once in a blue moon everything comes together but not before a lot of trial and error, with no guarantee that the next time will go as well. So, to recap, what I am interested in is knowing how other non-native speakers of German have overcome the physical act of speaking German and how was relaxation of all muscles involved (and of mind) achieved and so forth. Thank you for your insights.
