  • Welcome to the Warthog Project! This is Part 2 of the video that finally answers the number one question i get asked: How much did this all cost??
In this video I will go over the cost to add all the peripherals to the cockpit, including the Thrustmaster 'Cougar' MFD's and Warthog HOTAS, SimPed F16 Rudder Pedals and the Virpil Extension.
Then I go into the cost of the display setup I am using, including the custom made 180 degree curved projection surface, the two Benq 1080ST projectors, the projector mounts and HDMI cables, and the Fly Elise software used to blend and warp the two projector images.
    01:10- Thrustmaster Cougar MFD's
    02:05- Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS
    02:40- VIRPIL Warthog Extension (100mm)
    02:58- SimPed F-16 Rudder Pedals
    03:44- Sound System
    04:22- Buttkicker Gamer 2
    05:42- Projectors (Benq 1080ST)
    08:18- Projector Mounts/HDMI Cables
    10:05- Display Surface
    11:27- Warp/Blend Software (www.fly.elise-ng.net)
    14:03- Grand Total Cost
    15:22- Rambling about the PC
    17:24- BRRRTTTT

I'm very surprised with the cost efficiency you've maintained with this build. However, I was more surprised when you said you had a wife! With a setup like that it's normally a wife or the flight sim life 😂 She's definitely a keeper. Seriously though, very impressive. Keep building it up until you can fly that sucker right out of your house ✈️

The military versions are much larger and hydraulic computer controlled beasts. Which is one of the reasons that they cost so much. However, yes they do cost way too much for what they are, however all military budgets along with other Government budgets pay a lot more than they need to for light bulbs etc. However, all of that is top secret and I kid you not, all military suppliers whether it be paper clips, light bulbs etc are classified as top secret.

I believe that the a-10c dcs-bios script can send the cdu as text, so its possible to have an arduino render the cdu on its own instead of using video output from the game, freeing up a display output.
Also, 8000 AUD is honestly not bad for a setup like that, if you had a 'normal' hobby like riding a motorcycle you would easily exceed that amount just on the initial purchase, if you like going alpine skiing or snowboarding it doesn't take too many trips and equipment bought to exceed that. It's a matter of perspective and honestly in my mind the process of building is just as exciting as using a simpit.

This amazing rig that you have built is the coolest thing I have ever seen! If I had the room, I would love to build one like it. I built a cabinet about 30 years ago to sit in when I played F-15 Strike Eagle on my Commodore 64 computer, It was comparable to a Race Drivin' sit in cabinet and I thought THAT was bada$$, but this is the holy grail of rigs in my opinion. My concern with projectors on curved screens has always been the focus. I figured unless they are laser projectors, you'd only be able to keep one slice of the image in sharp focus, but it looks like that isn't a huge issue for you. Perhaps higher resolutions would present bigger problems because of the additional fidelity.

  • @MrRolnicek
    @MrRolnicek 4 роки тому +3

I'm thinking that you could replace the projector screen with a Tilt Five AR glasses + some retro reflective surfaces.

Yeah im planning a video on the basics of how to get a switch to work with DCS. Have a look through my channel- there is a few videos that touch on the subject already.

Your cost is actually quite reasonable. I was expecting a total of about $20K.

Hi RomeoKilo, I am thinking of using the same screen and projector setup as you except using 2 x 4k projectors. Currently I have an overclocked CPU @ 5.0 Ghz and a single 1080TI.
Do you think that my system would be able to smoothly run 2 x 4k projectors ?
If not, would two separate GPUs (non-SLI) be possible ? Is it possible to set up DCS world so that each projector uses a separate (non-SLI) GPU ? If so, how ?

Hi ... first of all thx for these awesome videos ... but may I ask some question ... how did you get all the gauges and the horizon into the panel ... I guess they are not physical but displayed on the screen behind ... is there an extra plugin for dcs? Will you do a software programming / configuration video? I would be very interested in this. BR

The gauges are done with free software called Helios. Have a look here www.captzeen.com/helios/index.asp

Just out of curiosity, I get how much fun this must have been to create, but how much do you use this simulator? Do you use it every day? Just ballpark, 10 hours a month? 20?

"You probably already have a HOTAS Setup" Oh yes sir I do, I have an almighty Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 :D
Just got DCS World 2 days ago, completely new to flight sims and wow DCS is pretty cool to fly on, shame it costs so much for DLC content but I understand the work involved in the development of these games and the features it has. But it does limit the player base a lot.

This is a work of art. Simple as that. I love that you explained you didn’t just drop the funds in one go. Gives the rest of us a little hope we could do this ourselves.

Here is where to start- dcs-bios.a10c.de/docs/v0.7.0/userguide.html Also- have a read through the very long DCS-BIOS thread on the ED Forums. Lots of info in there and will take a while to understand.

I used a LeoBoder BU0836X and one of their hall sensors as well. It was pretty easy, i just pulled out all the old PCBs, hot glued the new hall sensor in place and wired it to the card. 100 times more accurate.

So all this is in Australian dollars? What's that in US $? $47.50?
Just joking... No offence ment. This is the coolest set up I have seen. I figured you spent like 20K on it. I don't know crap about computers, I can barely operate this phone I'm on (and I'm probably doing that wrong too). I still enjoy the videos, thanks for the walk through.
