Best review on youtube hands down! really in detail.
I wish they made a cheaper version, with less metal for us poor people that still want the A-10c layout.
that lift-stop afterburner feature on the throttle is a huge deal. So many people overlook it or don't bother finding out how useful it is on military aircraft.
surprisingly the comparison to the airbus stick actually gave me a good idea of what to expect
Next time I am on an airbus I am going to ask the pilot if I can wiggle his yoke so I can tell if I will like the feel of the warthog.
For anyone woundering, the question has been raised about yaw. You can solve this by using the trim hat for left/right rutter. If your only playing games like Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen or Arma 3, you should be fine. If your playing any type of DCS world sim, you really may want peddles. Hope this helps anyone still on the fence.
I'm glad you showed how each button works earlier in the video but it felt really unnecessary to show the 1:1 mapping of real controls to in-game controls for every single switch dial and button. We trust you if you show a few and then the rest just work. Plus, these are how the switches work in DCS even with keyboard controls or different joysticks.
That said this is by far the most comprehensively thorough review I've seen of this product.
I know a bit long winded showing all that stuff but then had I not I guess there’d have been plenty of people asking if all the buttons work, even if I’d said they did!
I'm still 14, so this awesome stick will take way too long to get, but now I know I want it :D nice video!
Lol im 12 and i got one yesterday cos i really wanna be a typhoon pilot and im building a pc aswell so cant wait to play dcs
Jetman6555 You’d be better off being an f-35b pilot if ur going down raf route. I’m also gonna build a pc this Christmas for DCS, Mfs2020 and others as i want to be a pilot and RAF might be an option. Also apparently there’s gonna be a typhoon module (full fidelity) in dcs.
@@willhestpt yea i heard also f35 is a strike fighter and i dont like it very much tbh maybe i could transfer to the f35 later on down the line but the typhoon is totally my thing.....What specs r u thinking for your pc?
Edit.. typhoon module i cant wait for in dcs but id say its gonna be a while
Very nice video tutorial well explained.Tutorials like these are hard to come by Thrustmaster should pay you for this great work you've done...lol.. Do you know where I can get one cheap in Uk definitely need to get one ASAP..Cheers...!!!
I got mine from Micam, Coventry. Very good price and very quick delivery. At the time they were the best price I could find.
Excellent review, well spoken and great demonstration. Thank you.
Watching this after my X-56 broke, once I get the warranty replacement I’m going to sell it and buy this :D great video!
I'm just starting out with DCS World (call sign Shakespeare) and I picked up the X56 Rhino HOTAS set on eBay, but the A-10 set is my goal. Thanks for the awesome video!
It is 2021 and I am watching a video from 2014, is this still the HOTAS to get??
very good review , this should be the standard for every hardware review - showing all the buttons \ axis and there functionality.
REally enjoyed your videos and comments...esp on sticktion issues, I still bought one, on its way, knowing of the issues..with my many years of pc teardown/repair and model building, I think I can fix it as in the videos with sanding and lubricant, however for the price of this item 430 US for me, there is in my humble opinion no reason for the factory to have NOT addressed this issue a long time ago, the causes are obvious, easy to remedy, and in this high end joystick line this issue should have been resolved no excuses. For all the great features about it, when it comes down to it..we buy a great joystick for me at least a smooth effortless yet solid feel of the stick..this sticktion is just not acceptable..I should not have to tear down a nearly 500 dollar product before shipping is factored in to remedy what the makers should have done. Enough said..I hope i enjoy it as most do..I just dont want to break something along the way.
Im first time flier thanks for making the video, very helpful
Great job landing! I like flying fighters in flight sim more than commercial aircraft. This really looks worth it for the quality! Cheers
Thank you for your extremely detailed review, just received mine and noticed a loose speed brake switch. Glad you confirmed this on yours as well. Must be normal.
I know you might not see this, but does it still function well after 8 years of use?
Flown like a pro. Very good review
What a great, relaxing over view video. Thank you.
I watched your review last week and bought myself the package and dude is it amazing, I've been using a saitek X52 Pro and it is like comparing iron to gold. 10/10 review

Well you have to realize, it all boils down to "you get what you pay for". This is a must have and a "dear santa" HOTAS for ANYONE who wants to experience decent air sim (specially A10). But the price is where things get...you know...
My problem with the A10 Warthog HOTAS, is that out of nowhere, my computer failed to recognize the throttle quadrant and I have been unable to resynch/recognize it and I can't find any support to get it reconnected. Not reloading software, not new drivers, no of that worked.
My throttle just failed today..I get a driver error in the main menu..on game the throttle is not in the controls set up .. now my throttle is useless..I have sent a message to the hotas warthog website..I bet I dont hear back..
You really need to put an extension between the sensor and stick. That gives it a much better feeling and precision. I got an 80mm extension and it really helps.
It's a must have if you wan't to fly helicopters.
I want to buy HOTAS Warthog but I can not use Rudder Pedals for different reasons. Is there a way to fly with HOTAS Warthog and somehow assign rudder control in a different way than rudder pedals? I love to fly missions in DCS: A-10C Warthog :)
There's an analogue control on the throttle that you could reassign, although that would limit your targeting in DCS. The grey lever as also an analogue control so you might be able to assign that instead.
Marcin Podolski it’s a throttle tension on the aircraft so I think it’s free?
@@FlyingSi is it too much for you to check it for DCS mapping that switch to rudder control does it work? please, please, please :)
@@MrMPod I have mapped the grey lever to rudder myself, so it should be fine. As for the analogue stick, I'd try to keep than for slewing the weapons as you'd lose a lot by not doing so.
that was real unreal! in a cool way i never seen a simulator like that before, thanksz
congratulations for this review
I would have LOVED to have one of these but i ordered an x55 Rhino instead.the warthog is superb but i cannot afford it at 2x+the price of the x55. i neary went for the x52 pro since it has a lot of metal construction but the x55's extra buttons/switches drew me in. should arrive tomorrow so ill be cruising the space of Elite Dangerous in style.
i just want ask. how you guys clean the ball inside of that joystick stand? like cotton in stick or someting like that? or do need to clean that ball? and sorry form my bad english.
Fantastic review! About to get mine, but no rudder pedals (sold out). Do you think i can somehow get around that with mapping the rudders to this HOTAS? Im new to flight sim, so I have no clue if that will work
As an emergency you could map it to an axis (maybe the lever on the trust levers which would do tension in the real aircraft). It will be fun trying to coordinate flight!
Looks truly wonderful, but what we also really want is an all round screen to see left, right, above and behind.
There are military sims which have that sort of projection, so I think so. But I also think it might be rather too expensive for the rest of us!
I have a question about the HOTAS, specifically the throttle quadrant, will I be okay buying this for the F/A-18C that was released earlier today in DCS World? or is the way the throttle is configured going to make it difficult to manipulate the F/A-18C's throttle options/sensors etc. Thanks
Thomas Frankowski yes. I just purchased the A10 Warthog HOTAS yesterday (pre purchased F/A18C on DCS some time ago as well). You will want to map a button on the HOTAS (or keyboard bond) which is labeled “cycle afterburner detent” or something close to that - then you can either just push throttles full forward to activate burner (have to push the binded key once and only once), or you can remove that spacer between the throttles and flip the detent he mentions. I did both, gives a nice extra emersion layer by lifting the throttles to get mil power / burners. Also, if the F/A18C throttle grip ends up coming to fruition (been teased and talked about for over a year now), it will add on to this setup, simply by unscrewing the lower silver ring and replacing. Will be great. Enjoy your upcoming purchase, well worth the money.
excellent showcase vid. I currently own a ch throttle (which i love) and CH fighterstick. Im thinking about swapping the fighterstick for the warthog. Do you think the warthog stick would work alright with the ch throttle? Ch throttle has an amazing thumb stick thats analogue for strafing in space sims and i dont want to give it up
Do the throttles have an idle cutoff where you have to lift throttles to start/ cut-off engines ? I missed that part, just heard the afterburner lock mentioned … thanks
Nine months late, but yes, by default you lift to overcome the idle/shut off. In the video he says you can reverse the catch to be a lift for afterburner instead
Great video and demo. I have the warthog joystick using a x52 throttle now which is good but looking for a deal on the thrustmaster throttle
Piano and aircraft nice touch mate!
I sit in about same position as you, warthog on the desk like this, but after a while its realy killing my shoulder and hand because the stick itself is so high and the spring tension so strong. but the hotas warthog was never built to be an ergonomic desk stick.
you need to get the wheelstand pro V2 for the warthog, for an extra $10 they will throw in a connection where its just the stick not the huge metal base plate, ideal for in-between your legs in a swivel chair
is there any such controller in the market where the thrust in the controller automatically goes up and down when the auto throttle is engaged with the auto pilot ?
There are motorised throttle quadrants out there. Having instructed in various sims over the years I can say that they ones available to the home simmer are not only extremely expensive but also WILL break.
Good video!!, Why is it that you dont map the gear up/down on the throttels controls??
nice video, sir! thanks for sharing! great landing job!
can you answer one question please:
are the usb cables of the joystick and the thruster formly fixed or can you plug them out? I can't find a good foto of the backside.
Superb review, thanks. I'd have 3 questions I'd like to ask you (or anyone who has tried out this setup):
1/ would this setup (i.e. throttle and stick) also work in connection with the Huey in DCS?
2/ If yes, does it require a lot of tweaking to get the throttle to work as the collective?
3/ Is it possible to loosen up the spring in the stick for it to work more like a cyclic stick on a helo?
Thanks a lot!
I don't have the huey, but given how configurable DCS is, I assume it's not too big a problem? Hopefully someone can jump in here who uses this combination?
Yes, it is possible by removing the big spring. I've seen tutorials online. I'm not sure I'd be especially comfortable with doing this to mine, but then I'm not a rotary pilot!
Hope this helps?
Best wishes
Simon
Love mines! I actually ended up playing a lot of Kerbal Space Program because I am to lazy to map for the serious games. Once I can get a hold of an Rx 480 I will start going ham on Star Citizen.
Nice job mate.... thanks for the info. Fly safe :)
I play the game battlestar galactica online I fly the cylon war raider I think this will be my new set up I like the fact u can set it up in several configuration and the war raider has an after burner aka turbo thruster 3 engine slots but I use avoidance in 1 so it works pretty out good and I like that all the switches on the throttle or joystick can be configured for different views
is it only for A-10 ? or compatible for other jets in DCS World ? and operated smoothly ? or needs tobe ajusted ?
It's perfect for the A10, but it's also compatible with others. It's just a controller, but DCS recognises it and maps it to the A10 automatically...
honestly i never pllayed something like this but this looks amazing
Is the big hat switch on the stick analog or an 8-way digital hat switch?
where did you get your setup for£250
I noticed that you had Track IR but you didn't use it?
haha, my HOTAS warthog arrives tomorrow, ive seen some videos and i have to say this is the best one, showing all the controls and switches in-game, or in-simulator. but i wonder do you need to set up controls in DCS all by yourself or the game just recognizes it, plug it in and go, all the switches are well assigned.
Hope you're enjoying it, Erick! It maps automatically in the game and all the switches are sensible. I just did a tiny mod to enable trim or viewpoint with the unused pinky switch.
@@FlyingSi I may be way late but does it auto key map if I am flying the F-16C Viper? Had wanted the Warthog but chose the F-16 for its less steep learning curve for a noob like me.
Great review man, thanks so much! Really want something for Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, and for some A10 flying of course :p
+Samuel Padfield I already did. I got an illuminated Corsair keyboard and and old wired Microsoft mouse. I'm not playing FPS or anything that really needs anything more and I'd rather not waste money!
+Shankovich Star Citizen is Fantastic/INCREDIBLE (on med-High settings [my old GTX780]); but there does not seem to be an official profile for this Controller set for Star Citizen yet. Also buy the TM Combat Pedals really to match.
Any recommendations for configuring this to FSX for a fighter with the TacPack?
I use FSUIPC and LINDA to assign the various functions in FSX. It means you can have different profiles for different aircraft.
Should I replace my Saitek X52Pro for this stick? I was thinking about getting this stick :D I'm just worries about desk placement.
Hi Aarron,
I don't have the Saitek so it's hard to say. I think this is a fantastic bit of kit and it has really enhanced my sims. But the X52 is supposed to to be quite nice, if a little lightweight.
It IS a little high on a desk, but then most pro controls are, I suppose...
well lets see a $20 easy to break stick vs a high quality almost all metal around $500 stick? if you have the money definitely get warthog you could do alot to it and nothing will break most likely i ordered one myself 2 months ago but i live in Canada and thrustmasters delivery quality is pure shit im not getting it for another month but if u can get one for a good price on amazon or a local store then go for it
I replaced my X52Pro with it and I'll never touch another saitek again this is amazing compared to the X52Pro
***** I also purchased the TM Warthog. can't wait for it to arrive! NOw just gotta wait for my motherbaord/video card/32 GB ram and I can get on DCS
Hi!
- Thank you for making this video, it was amazing and very helpful!
I'm considering buying one of these pretty soon,- I'm novice in the field of aircraft and aviation, but
I would like it very much as a hobby 🙂, to learn and explore aircraft designs and aviation science.
I very recently found out of this amazing *Digital Combat Simulator Software* and my problem with it currently using mouse/keyboard is that I can't operate all the buttons and cockpit devices with my mouse, my mouse disappears entering DCS. I can still move around my cockpit with it but not to select anything as shown in a lot of UA-cam videos that the *mouse translates to a green plus in game.*
Help will be immensely appreciated.
Thanks.
Can you use this HOTAS without the pedals? Like, i know there is no yaw twist axis but can you like optimize maybe one of the hat switches to work like the yaw? Im really on the edge of the budget just with the stick, i was thinking about the Saitek X-55 but i have read alot of negative comments that it has a lot of bugs etc. And there is like no X-55 in my country and i really don't want to order from US, it would just cost so much more than ordering in here. Maybe the lack of products has something to do with the negative comments what Saitek has been get. I think they're fixing the bugs now. But yeah, so should i buy TM HOTAS Warthog without the pedals or wait for the X-55 and does the TM Warthog works without the pedals
You can configure the trim hat for the yaw right and left Rutter as long as you don't use them in and real sin game. If your playing E.D, S.C, or Arma 3, you should be fine.
X45 throttle T16000m Joystick.. I am happy best setup I ever had... Annoying having to put the X45 out of the way but xD... I would love your setup though lol.
i found it for 250 usd THrottles. Is it good idea to buy separate throttle and joistick?
Ottonturk Mine came as a bundle and both parts are good. Not sure if that helps?
Very impressive! I used to fly a bit in the Air Force. This looks like the best stick/throttle/rudder system yet. I wanna get one!
Can you hook up the software to your side monitors to get a better, more natural field of view?
Yes, you can! I really need two widescreen sides for it to work well, but it's possible. I don't at the moment because the resolutions don't match and so not only is there a performance penalty, but also DCS menus have problems.
czdaniel1 When I say I flew "a bit" I mean "a little bit." T-37s and T-38s. Didn't quite make it past that.
wait. you mentioned you flew a real a320 ----how?
I used to instruct on them before I got an airline job. And the airbus sim is unique in that whilst all proper sims use the same controls as the actual aircraft, the airbus ‘feel’ isn’t back driven like, say, a Boeing. So the sim controls feel the same as the actual aircraft.
i want to by it for the fsx and use for training on the A320 is it going to work well...because what's important to me is the joystick synchronize nicely with fsx plane controller .... and this is going to be my third joystick to buy since got broke'n i know it's not cheap but im ready to put some money .
boos where can we buys the stick and throttle and how much it cost? Reply ASAP....
I'm not sure - when I purchased mine I used GOOGLE to find a place to buy it. Maybe try the same?
Would this be any good for Elite-Dangerous?
Hehehe....I was thinking about this HOTAS too..I want to change from my X-52. But I got no rudder. So I think I buy a Saitek X-65...this has a twist (z-axis).
Sam Lang
No Way! The X-55 is made of cheap plastic and without force sensing.
Duke49th the plastic really isn't bad. I've seen it. I do not own one but it is a great stick.
Hi! What is the name of the simulator of A-10 ? Thanks good video
Luis Vergara DCS World. Base sim is free, A10C module is not, but worth it.
I think the biggest shame of this system is the abundance of locking switches (toggles that stay in the position you move them to). That means that even though the switch may have 3 positions, you can only assign one function to it. If the switch has momentary positions, you can assign 2 functions to it. While this is the way those switches must operate on an AC10, it severely restricts the usability in other sims. What a shame.
Nice review. Its a shame a lot of folks have had major problems (stiction/broken buttons) with this unit. Google it. Many videos on how they have to disassemble, sand and grease the stick to get it to work correctly. And many complaints about shoddy internals as well.
Tom Daigon Yeah, I'm more interested in getting the VKB Gunfighter MCG Pro (in the future), it has metal cams, great build quality.
I just got the VKB Gladiator MK2 (non pro) and it feels amazing. Can't imagine what the pro version with the metal cams feels like...
I'm recently getting into PC gaming and would like to know a cheap stick that works well, I'll compare prices later so don't mind the budget.
Try getting a T.flight Hotas X from Thrustmaster, I got it for $70 AUS. It's a nice joystick and it has a separate throttle which fits your palm nicely, the joystick can also twist so that's an advantage.
Rodrigo Mejia
Yea, the x52 pro was great for a few years for me. I ended up getting a warthog because of the extra precision, but for an intro stick, x52 pro is good.
Excellent Video. Would you consider also doing a tutorial on mapping the buttons with DCS A10C e.g. TMS, Collie hat and DMS
Good idea! DCS tends to map automatically, but if you thought a tutorial might help then yes!
Great Vid, thanks !!
Do you think this is overkill for Elite Dangerous?
Flying Si Aviation Videos & Reviews Another answer please Si. Can the trigger dual function be set to different tasks?
Zooumberg It can. Obviously it depends on the sim you're running, but in most things it can be.
great stuff
Know its a old vid, But hope your having a nice day.
can you modify the joystick resistance?
+William Chandler Sorry no. but if you try and use one of these you really will not want to.
+Captain Jeremy dam that's a shame cause I'm planning on playing star citizen and there is heaps of movement in that game and just wanted to put as little strain on my wrists as possible. Thanks heaps for replying though :)
where can i buy it
Where did you get it for £250?
LenChewbacca It was a year or so ago now, but a quick look on Amazon has it for a little under £280.
Flying Si Aviation Videos & Reviews Ohh ok. I still reckon it's worth it. What rudder pedals would you recommend?
I use Saitek. They're ok. To be honest, most home rudder pedals are pretty poor compared to the commercial sim stuff. It's engine out where the lack of control loading becomes a problem, but for normal home sim work, the ProFlight stuff is OK.
Flying Si Aviation Videos & Reviews Do you mean these? eustore.madcatz.com/mad-catz-brands_EU/Saitek-EU/PRO-Flight-Rudder-Pedals-by-Saitek.html?whence=
Or these? eustore.madcatz.com/mad-catz-brands_EU/Saitek-EU/Saitek-PRO-Flight-Combat-Rudder-Pedals.html?whence=
LOL @ engine shutdown at the end haha
What about Battle Field, I've bought Logitech 3D and it SUXX because it has very wide backlash. Not bad for flying but awful for aiming, especially in helicopters.
+Roman Pike BF 1,2,3,4 don't count.
They are not flight sims. they are games with planes.
I'm assuming that you're a pilot.
going to play around allot in flight and space sims lather this year, i only need my copy of oculus ; b
I could get over the price... if they included a rudder twist grip. If you're serious about flightsims (which you probably are), you'll need to drop another $250 odd for foot pedal rudders... and that makes the price hard to swallow.
👍🏿
Why cant all reviewers of hardware be more like this guy. Sheesh.
