ADDITIONS: Correctly pronounced, "KOhlob." Challenging on the hips and knees. Permit can be difficult to obtain. Glad so many are enjoying this video! Thank you!
Another great video! The fall colors look awesome. I have done this hike twice from the bottom, and twice from the top. The water is pretty cold. A lot of the water comes from natural springs further up the canyon. There are also dinosaur footprints about 2 miles into the hike on the left side of the creek. The waterfalls & cascades make it very photogenic.
Just epic. The hike seems a lot more awesome with the America's Parks flavor. You mentioned this hike as a goal of yours in your Zion guide video and im glad you finaly pulled it off!
Randy, Randy, Randy.....last week you had Buckskin Gulch. I have been fortunate to explore that eight time? Definition of "awe inspiring". Now The Subway which I have been blessed to do twice. I cannot give you a bigger ATTA BOY !!!!! For your viewers I want to point out that the water they were playing in at the end.......is really quite Cold! I went in that once when the water was cloudy and it was uncertain as to how deep it got. Scary. I will never forget the first time I came to that initial staircase of a waterfalls. Tear inducing beauty!! That climb out to the car is a killer. One sitting rock at a time was how I did it.
Enjoyed reading about your experience there, Harry! You sure do have many wonderful National Park memories. "Tear inducing beauty!!" - perfectly stated!
Absolutely Awesome Randy. The beauty of Zion is really second to none. The above and below water video was amazing and a pleasure to watch. Thank you again and God Bless !! ... Robin :-)
So I have done this from the top down one way before, and I'm going to say this is the most beautiful hike I've ever done! It took me out of my comfort level many times, like having to rappel down 2 30-foot cliffs for the first time and swimming in murky water that I couldn't touch the bottom. This hike is such an adventure! I'm so glad you got to finally do it because I know you wanted to do this for quite a while! Beautiful job shooting this, and thank you so much for bringing me back.
Another great hike with helpful hints and true to life footage showing the details of the hike. This is one (of a multitude) of things that you are an expert at doing! Such a fun swim session before the dreaded climb back out. Thanks for a great video. Take care always!
Awesome hike! The quality of your video was fantastic; almost like being there. The colors on the trees were incredible! On my bucket list of hikes to complete for sure.
Hey Randy, I have watched many of your family videos of your trips to our national parks. I have to say that I found this video to be your most enchanting and fascinating video yet.
I’m so excited to found your channel today my hiking partner is heading out to subway at Zion national Park, today we went on a hike in Vegas called craft loop it’s spectacular it’s out at red rock. We are so fortunate in Las Vegas to have so many amazing areas to hike and train at. Last year we went on the JMT but had to turn back because of fires. Anyway I just wanted to share with you I saw one of your hikes that you had turned 62 it seemed anyway I turned 62 this weekend and so I’m so excited to have started my weekend celebrations with an amazing hike with my favorite hiking pal. I shared the subway hike with her because she leaves tomorrow morning. Thank you so much really love your channel
Congrats on getting the permit and completing this hike. This hike is very high up on my bucket list. The Subway section of this hike is so beautifully unique but that whole hike looked amazing as well. Great timing on being there during fall as well and seeing those colors. Beautifully shot video. Great work and congrats again on being able to experience this one.
❤️❤️❤️ Zion. ❤️ I felt such peace in Zion. There's something about it that touches my soul. So glad I visited in May 2018. Crowds weren't bad at all. From what I hear it's become very busy and crowded. Oh my! This is my favorite video so far! What a beautiful hike! It's absolutely stunning!! I wouldn't ever be able to hike The Subway. Thank you for taking us along. Wow! Y'all hike fast though. lol I enjoyed this video so much! Thank you!
Such a fun video. Nice that you had so many cameras running. Was really cool to see that water diving from different angles all cut together. And who can beat those fall views! There's nothing like fall colors to make an already beautiful place even more stunning. Loved this series Randy. Can't wait to see where you visit next!
Much appreciated, Andy! Julie and I just returned from a short trip to visit family in Florida. Was able to "squeeze" out 4 videos! :) Enjoy your week!
A great video to watch. At the start the views of the approach to the canyon were so beautiful. The autumn colours add so much to the scene. The combination of red, green and blue with the addition of the golden leaves is magical. Deep inside the canyon the walk becomes ever more exciting. Where you turn around the joy of the moment truly is really apparent. Thanks for showing this fabulous adventure.
Very good video with accurate information. I did this hike a few years ago with 66 year old knees and found the return up to the trailhead by far the most difficult. when you get down from the start to the creek it's really not too bad but very slippery in spots; water shoes are necessary. It;s absolutely beautiful and because of the permit system not crowded at all, A great addition to your bucket list but the water is COLD. Ron Culpepper
Beautiful scenery! Really liked your multi-camera angle shots when you were speaking to the camera. That swimming looked like a lot of fun! Some of that rock climbing looked challenging (slippery), you folks are brave!
Those immersion shots were cool! So much water! This video you went all natural with your sounds. Great hike! The swimming though...def will never forget . Cold!!!! But the shots are great memories for you all- that place is cool! Artic challenge lol
Randy, THIS IS AWESOME! Your films are getting better and better (I am not calling them videos anymore, you are a cinematographer in my opinion). I have said it before, but merits saying again, the amazing color and contrast that you get with red rock and fall colors is stunning. I watch your UA-cam channel on a Sharp - AQUOS Quattron - 80" LED screen, and it is just amazingly awesome. “It’s not AMERICA’S PARKS if someone does not jump in!” THANKS FOR TAKING US INTO (UNDERWATER) THE SUBWAY TRAIL, . . . Mike
What a historic video. Have we ever heard Randy say he didm't want to jump in the water.......ever LOL. Just beautiful. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief throughout the video. With only 80 permits would you say it is quite difficult to acquire one? Thanks for sharing this beautiful adventure :) Much love
Hey Jymn! Yeah, struck out on the day I originally desired, but found the following Sunday with 10 permits that instantly became available. Needed to extend the trip a couple days, but so worth it!
Great video. I'm a local. You may have not noticed the rock slab with over 40 large dinosaur tracks about 2 miles in. Kolob is pronounced Koh Lob. It is a different canyon accessible by trail from near where you were at the Left Fork trailhead. Kolob Arch the second largest arch in the world is on that trail. You can also drive into Kolob Canyons from I-15 near Kanarraville. From that entry into Kolob there is a 14 mile out and back to Kolob Arch. Kanaarville has the easiest to access dramatic slot canyon in Utah called Kanaarville Creek/Falls. Sometimes the subway pots and stream where you jumped in are completely full of sand. Never go with high runoff as you won't see anything the water is so deep (Spring). You went at the best, most pristine time. Thanks for the video.
Tricky trail indeed and wow that descent, poles were a great idea, not a place you want a fall. The canyon floor was amazing, superb colours., looked real tough going but Spiderman did a real good job! That water was insane, I have had a cold shower before but nothing as cold as that I'll bet but what a rush! Superb, full watch! Cheers Alan
wow wow wow this is one amazing hike! so awesome you got the permit... Roxana would swim there but looks way cold to me haha! beautiful scenes especially with the fall colors exploding. those aspen look at their peak ! thanks so much for taking us with you
Looks like y'all saved the best hike for last! Me and Rachel definitely got to get out there! For sure going to remember this hike whenever we do go! Thanks for sharing 👍
This was so informative and love how much fun yall having. Thanks for sharing. We've been living in UT for 2 years and focusing on off the beaten path places but I finally have interest in tackling the Subway, Narrows and a few more well known hikes.
Wow, I can see why this trail is so popular that permits are needed to limit the people on them! I think the entire trail looked beautiful from what you have showed us. You and water are best friends - whether you wanted to get in this time or not!
Randy, loved this video! We were at Zion in June 2019 and we need to read more I guess. Don’t remember reading or seeing anything about the Subway Trail. Thank you for sharing all your ‘how to’ tips!
Hey, you made it to Kolob Canyon! I remember that you said you had not been there yet....what a great (& less crowded) part of Zion NP. Those autumn colors, the water shots and the hike really showed off your video photographic skills! As I've always said, Utah is the best. I'm currently working on a new painting; of course, it uses Utah as a backdrop with the "Vincent" painting "Starry Night" as a centerpiece. I'll email you a photo when it's completed. Cheers!
As usual, great commentary and great insight.....valuable tips for the next person. I was hoping for more description of the actual "subway" formations and what kind of material those subway walls are but it was fun going on that tour. Also, I would have enjoyed hearing a description of the ascent out and how challenging it was. Thanks for your vids....much appreciated
Appreciate the feedback!. We made 11 stops on this trip and was maxed out on the research. Usually end the videos at the culmination of the destination, but filming that hike out would have indeed been interesting for the viewer (and me). Enjoy your week!
Hello America's Park's😊😊😊, WOW!! The hike down looked quite dangerous, as you mentioned Black Canyon type of downhill hike...i remember that steep hike down Black Canyon, and decided I'd had enough😄😄😄and you guys make it look so easy! The really cool payoff was seeing you guys jump into the very cold waters with baseball caps on!! Randy, this was an AWESOME video my friend👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍. Now on to, Rainbow Bridge, National Monument😄😄😄😄!!
Randy, I think the steepest hike I ever took was when I was on a 3-day whitewater rafting trip through Canyonlands N.P. 30+ years ago. At the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers, we stopped for a short rest, during which time, I climbed up a very steep path several hundred feet to The Doll House in the Maze District, which I figured was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see that district. I wasn't let down by that decision, but it was certainly grueling, though short.
Great video! I did the narrows on my last trip to Utah but unfortunately was not able to get a permit for the Subway. I'm gonna try to get a permit well in advanced for out trip next year!
Hope it comes together for you. Got this permit on my first attempt - took the final day that was available and rearranged my trip around it. Still 0-4 on The Wave, lol!
Such a beautiful video, thank you! Would LOVE to do this hike sometime. I will be in Zion for a trail 50k in April, but that water will be way too cold for me that early on! Blessings!
Wow, Lynn, 50K! Very impressive. Yeah, that water was "freezing" in mid-October! Worth the day, if you can secure a permit. The Lord's blessings to you as well!
All the water you see flowing seeps out springs from the canyon walls not much further from the end of the bottom up route, so likely that water temperature wouldn't be much different in spring time. However April can also see snow melt water flowing in the canyon which would certainly be quite cold!
8-9 miles not too bad! Love the views here wow. How do you get into Zion do you park outside the park and then take the shuttle in? What time did you catch it for the trail? Also what type of GoPro do you use? Nice video as usual!
Thanks! Not bad distance-wise, but that hike out of the canyon was a challenge! There is a parking lot right by the Subway trailhead. Not many there b/c permits are required. Not sure if the shuttle goes that way as it's outside of the standard park site. I use a GodPro Black 7.
Thanks for the video, this is super helpful. I just came back from Zion NP and I want to do this hike the next time I go. I'm a little afraid of heights. Did the hike down to the canyon feel dangerous at all or was it just super steep?
Glad you enjoyed the video! If you are careful, you'll be fine regarding safety. Can't remember any significant exposure. Just nasty climbing back out! :)
Great video! Thank you so much for saying what day you were there! Did they say anything to you about toxic cyanobacteria? My understanding is that you're not supposed to get your head wet?
Thanks much, Jen! Yeah, I've heard about the bacteria and its presence in The Narrows. Can't recall what the situation was like when we were in the Subway on that occasion. If it was present, thankfully we all survived! :)
@@jenr7480 I have to believe the NPS should have the information you need if you contact them with something as serious as this. Enjoy your hike! Hiking out of that canyon was nasty! :)
What time of year did you do this to get those fall colors? It looks beautiful. The video is showing February but I feel like we’ve gotten the fall colors in November/december. Wondering if it was closer to that time.
Scored Subway permits for 10-7-23. Time to not fail on this hike this time. This time I will get me permits the day before and start at sunrise. I've lost 40 lbs preparing for this hike.
@@thomasmcdaniel7295 how many in your group for Friday? I have been monitoring the reservation page for people who decide to cancel and saw the Friday date open. I also entered the last min lottery for October 4. If I win, I intend to cancel my reservations for both October 6 and 7. The results should be announced tomorrow for the October 4 lottery so I will know then.
I’ve done the Grand Canyon and Angel’s Landing, do you think the steep portion of the hike is similar to those hikes? I ask because I have disability with my knee. Also how long was your hike? Is the permit for the group or per person? Thanks for answering any of my questions
Fewer "exposed" drop-offs, but much steeper than the two hikes you mentioned. Thankfully it's just the short decent into the canyon. The permit was for the entire group (not sure of the max #). It took us about 8 hours. Because you are continually stepping over rocks on the entire trail, this one was tough on the knees and hips.
Yeah, remember that as well, Brittney. Not sure on the update, but didn't see any warning signs at this location nor did I receive any notification when I retrieved my permit from the Ranger.
My wife and I did this hike in September of 21, let's just say it was very difficult to climb back out of the valley. It took us 9 hours to do the hike in 95 degree weather and we ran out off water. Be prepared!!
Oops! Part 2: It's amazing that up at the north end of Utah, they're skiing, and down where you are at the SW area of the state, you're in T-shirts--and at the end--swimming.
Probably, as there are no marked trails, but a lot of "trails" to make your way up the river. This just happened to be in our path so we attacked it. I'd bet there were other routes around it.
Great to hear how often you have enjoyed this gem, Mike! The top-down must be pretty incredible!
I did that hike 30 plus years ago and it has not changed a lot. Still the top 2 or 3 toughest I have ever done. Thanks for the memory
Really happy to hear that, Tom! Totally agree... the constant stepping up/down and the killer hike out was rough.
Just epic. The hike seems a lot more awesome with the America's Parks flavor. You mentioned this hike as a goal of yours in your Zion guide video and im glad you finaly pulled it off!
Great memory! Yeah, forgot I mentioned that in the the "Zion hikes" vid!

Absolutely Awesome Randy. The beauty of Zion is really second to none. The above and below water video was amazing and a pleasure to watch. Thank you again and God Bless !! ... Robin :-)
Thanks, Robin! So happy to know you enjoyed the video, brother! On to edit a few Florida stops from our most recent (and brief) trip.

Really encouraged by the kind and thoughtful words, Larry! Hope you can get out there in the near future!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so majestic as this - wow!
Thanks, Heather! Beautiful, but not easy on the knees and hips!
I did top down last summer! One of my favorite hikes ever. I highly recommend learning basic rappelling to do it. Truly amazing
Yes, have seen amazing videos from others. Really does look like a fantastic experience!
As winter drags on your videos get me more excited for warmer weather and the prospect of hitting the open road. Absolutely loved the fall colors.
Well-said, David! Have a few summer Florida videos on deck!

Great words, Ronald! With so many up and down stepping on rocks, I really felt it in the hips and knees. 66 years old... appreciate the inspiration!
Beautiful scenery! Really liked your multi-camera angle shots when you were speaking to the camera. That swimming looked like a lot of fun! Some of that rock climbing looked challenging (slippery), you folks are brave!
Sweet hike, but tough on the knees and hips with all the stepping up and down.
Those immersion shots were cool! So much water! This video you went all natural with your sounds. Great hike! The swimming though...def will never forget . Cold!!!! But the shots are great memories for you all- that place is cool! Artic challenge lol
Thanks for the nice observations and kind words! Yeah, that water was really chilly, but a nice memory to end the vacation.
Great intro for people that were too intimidated to research this hike like I was. Thanks for including the date hiked in the description :)
Happy to know you found the video useful! Enjoy your week!
“It’s not AMERICA’S PARKS if someone does not jump in!” THANKS FOR TAKING US INTO (UNDERWATER) THE SUBWAY TRAIL, . . . Hey Mike, really kind words! Nice to know others see some improvement. So thankful for your feedback, encouragement and friendship over the Internet.
How beautiful. One step at a time.
Right on, Beata! This one was hard on the hips!
What a historic video. Have we ever heard Randy say he didm't want to jump in the water.......ever LOL. Just beautiful. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief throughout the video. Very beautiful. Thank you for filming the trip for the rest of us.
My pleasure, Robert! Thankful you enjoyed the video!
This hike from the top to the bottom is in my top 3 favorite trail at Zion. Loved this trail! Need to go again.
Good taste! Would agree, easily in the top 5!
I've hiked many trails in Zion, but I will hike vicariously through you on this one! Great video!!
Thanks, Lori! This one was hard on the hips and knees. One time was good enough for me!
Great video footage as always. The colors out west are amazing- looks so fresh.
Thanks, Julie!
I was hoping to do this one, but I'm a novice hiker, so I'll have to enjoy it through videos!
Yeah, this one was really challenging on the hips and knees! Thanks for the kind words!

This was our final hike and the exclamation point to our entire trip!
Looks like y'all saved the best hike for last! Me and Rachel definitely got to get out there! For sure going to remember this hike whenever we do go! Thanks for sharing 👍
The hardest part might have been securing the permit!
This was so informative and love how much fun yall having. Thanks for sharing.

Nice overview of this hike - this would be a new one for us when we return to Zion

Looks super fun! Next trip to Zion I’ll have to check this hike out
Definitely worth it! Be sure to secure you permit the second they become available.

Fantastic. Great job on the photography, although I suspect it isn't difficult given all the natural beauty that is surrounding you.
So true! Really hard to not get good shots in that canyon! :)
Wonderful stuff MrRandy🌝
Much appreciated, Mark!
That is a great place. Have done it from both directions. You missed the dinosaur tracks on the hike, which many people do.
Someone else mentioned that. Bummer... in all my research I never came across that information.
That was awesome!!!
Much appreciated, Anthony!
Absolutely AWESOME!
Appreciate that, Jenna!

However April can also see snow melt water flowing in the canyon which would certainly
be quite cold!
It wouldn’t be an americas parks video without jumping in some water!
Right on, Kayla!
LOL, that was awesome brother!!!
Thanks, brother!
@@AmericasParks very good to hear! I’m going about the same time in October as you did and trying to prepare myself as much as possible!
@@AmericasParks the post on the NPS site doesn’t say Narrows but specifically calls out North Fork which is the Subway so have been curious
We were there October 21, 2021.
Insane production
Thanks so much!
Great video, what was the date and temp when you did this? We are going next weekend and are deciding on whether shorts will be sufficient…. Thanks
Thanks! We Visited on October 24, 2021. Don't recall the temps, but wore shorts and remember it being ideal conditions. Enjoy your trip!
This was great ty for sharing sledgehammered that like button stay safe awesome and blessed enjoyed and shared
Thanks and enjoy your weekend!
ahhh did you guys miss the dinosaur tracks? Going in a couple of days, and doing a winter hike through the subway....
Yeah, didn't catch that one. Enjoy your time out there. One of the best hikes!
Scored Subway permits for 10-7-23. Time to not fail on this hike this time. This time I will get me permits the day before and start at sunrise. I've lost 40 lbs preparing for this hike.
Way to go, my friend! All the best for your October hike! You should get some sweet fall colors like we did!
My son and I will be there the day before you 🤙🏽
@@thomasmcdaniel7295 I just scored permits for 10-6 also but trying to bump it up to 10-4 and cancel the 10-6 and 10-7. Maybe I will beat ya there?!
@@dmerth hey man, did you figure out what day you were doing to subway ? We really want to go Saturday instead of Friday
This looks so amazing. I would think of bears.....,or? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching! Didn't see any extraordinary wildlife.
Asombroso! Fascinante! Pero, no hay animales ahí? No filmaste ni una ave siquiera! Saludos!
Yeah, come to think about it, there really were very few animals to see. Thanks for the comment!
Quite a few scenes are identical to the game Last of Us haha , great video man.
Had to look that one up! :) Appreciate your thoughts!
love the veiws!
Thanks, Shane!
What date did you do this hike? A friend and I will be in Zion the 21st-24th of October & I’m interested to see what the weather will be like.
We were there October 24, 2021. The fall colors were fantastic!
How do you go about getting a permit! I hope to hike it this summer!
There are three options. It was challenging to get. Here you go: www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/thesubway.htm
Por un buen rato volvieron a ser niños!
So true! Those were some good memories!
Has the cyanobacteria issue gotten any better? Last time I was at Zion I remember seeing warning signs everywhere about it
Yeah, remember that as well, Brittney.
Good words of advice for interested hikers. Thank you!
Did you guys hike this in October or end of September? Since the fall colors are showing on the video...
Hello... we were there October 24, 2021.
Fun!
Oops! Part 2: It's amazing that up at the north end of Utah, they're skiing, and down where you are at the SW area of the state, you're in T-shirts--and at the end--swimming.
So true... Utah, one of the best states imho!
Is there a way around that big rock yiur friend spider manned?
Probably, as there are no marked trails, but a lot of "trails" to make your way up the river. This just happened to be in our path so we attacked it. I'd bet there were other routes around it.
Nice video not to be a pain but it's pronounced KOhlob
Yeah, one of those times when you think you are totally correct, but completely wrong... lol!
Get lucky on the permit… hike the wave. This UA-cam shit is getting ridiculous.
Currently 0 for 3 on the Wave permit. Will persevere...
