Thank you for making this video. It's very well done. I'm doing this trip in two days and didn't know much about what to expect aside from the Subway itself. You deserve 1,000x as many views.
The Subway is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. There was a large group of us from Zion Lodge where we worked who hiked it on a day off. Half of us were seasonal with the others being full-timers including my son and his wife. I am so glad I got to go.
Last time we were in the area we couldn’t get a subway permit, but instead got a permit for keyhole canyon. So glad we did as it was amazing! I can’t recommend it enough for a beginner canyon. We hope to make it back to do the subway sometime soon.
One of my favorite hikes I've ever done. My brother and I did it when we were broke and stupid, so we nearly got lost before the canyon section and didn't have any gear except a rope that was barely long enough. I was also delighted to find a HUGE, bloated, white dead rat floating in one of the swimmers after I had swum around in it for 15 minutes looking for my sunglasses. Definitely recommend this hike though, it's really cool.
Thanks for this - the detail and advice is great! Feels almost like being along for the ride :-) Doing this top-down is one of my top 5 dream hikes, it looks like an absolute blast. Will have to figure out some way to take my Sony camera whenever I go, can't imagine not being able to take shots during this!
Thank you! So glad that you enjoyed the video! If you don't have canyoneering experience, you will definitely want to go with someone that does. It is such an incredible experience. Im a sony shooter too! It is a bummer that it is very challenging to take fancy cameras into spots like this. :)
@@daradventures this is very true! That's why when we run canyons we usually only take GoPros. Luckily they take pretty darn good pictures these days :-)
@@LiveThatAdventure Basically its a location in a fantasy series called the stormlight archive which was based on the landscape of zion and from the description of the book the subway was probably a specific inspiration.
We just hiked from the top down yesterday. Your video helped SO much. We watched it numerous times and found the trail and made it safely down thanks to your vid. We saw the tree in the upper section of the Subway but the one below is no longer there. Anyone know what happened to it?
That's so awesome! Wasn't it amazing!? So glad that our video could help. I'm assuming that a flash flood might have come through and taken the lower one away. Canyons are like living creatures and they are always changing. Glad you got to experience it!
Thanks for the quick reply and for the great vid again! Forgot to mention, we even took screenshots of your vid to reference as we made our way through. Such a help in making us feel comfortable doing this hike. 😊
@@greenepiece that's so cool! Thanks for letting us know. Always feels good to help people go on awesome adventures. That's why we started the channel 😎🤙
Dry suits are nice to protect you from the cold. There are only 2 problems with them. Canyoneering is really hard on your gear and a small hole in a dry suit ruins it. The other problem is that dry suits can be crazy expensive.
Hello, are you planning on doing the bottom up route? The route that we did on the video is considered semi technical and requires Canyoneering experience. We had to bring our own ropes as well as the rest of the gear. If you don't have Canyoneering experience we highly recommend doing the bottom up route. It's still really pretty 👍
Hey Rododlfo! You do need a permit of you go the way that we went. You can hike up from the bottom without a permit though. The way we went is a little more dangerous than the regular hike in.
My wife and I have done the Subway bottom up route 3 times and want to do the top down. I understand a permit is needed and no “commercial” tours allowed but if we don’t own gear do we just need to know somebody to guide us?
Technically yes. But this is a semi technical canyon. We strongly recommend having either canyoneering training or experience. We want to see you stay safe out there. 😁👍
@@LiveThatAdventure I agree. We’ve both done canyoneering/rappelling tours elsewhere and indoor rock climbing. Definitely wouldn’t do this without an experienced “guide”
Hi! I really enjoyed this video and was wondering if you just used your phone to record footage. I would like to start recording my hiking/camping trips. Any advice/tips from you would be greatly appreciated :)
Hey Lizzie! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it! We film all of our videos on the gopro hero 9 and 10. They are great little cameras and they take a beating!
We did 4 rappels. You do need a permit and I wouldn't recommend attempting it unless you at least have someone in your group with a lot of canyoneering experience.
I'm not a fan of permits either but I do understand their reasoning. It's a beautiful place so the limit it to 50 visitors a day so it doesn't turn into a zoo. And it can be dangerous so with the permit system in place, if something happens, the park service will have an idea of who hasn't made it out.
the death you referenced at about 10:15 did NOT occur at Keyhole Falls where you mentioned it. That accident occurred at the final, exit rappel, though not off the bolts that you used. There was webbing on a log 20 feet upstream from where you rapped, which left them rappelling in the water course, which precipitated the unfortunate accident.
Thanks for the correction! Some of the research we found mentioned Keyhole Falls as the site of the accident. Either way, it is meant to warn people about the danger of this hike and not to take it casually. We definitely appreciated the corrected info! Have a wonderful day.
@@LiveThatAdventure , @rickthompson2739 is correct. I think some news outlets got confused because the couple had completed Keyhole Canyon in preparation for Subway and there is a separate Keyhole *Falls* in the Subway, which you point out at the 10:00 mark.

@@colinmccullough2733 are you referring to the Canyoneering route? There are tracks on all trails, I would highly recommend loading the gpx into an inreach or similar tracker because cell reception is slim to none out there.
@@LiveThatAdventure Ya we are headed out to do that too down canyoneering route and it seemed like it would be easy to loose track of the route prior to getting into the canyon
I am surprised with all the repelling. Did this from top down as a scout in the 90's with no ropes. Remember climbing down a log at one point but never had harnesses or anything.
@@tylerashton8543 that's cool that you got to experience it! There must be some ways to work around it. There is just the one in the middle that I'm not sure how you could get by without rappelling. Maybe that was the log climb. Canyons are constantly changing due to flash floods.
