Narinder Biba - MIRZA ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਬੀਬਾ - ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ

Mirza Sahiban is one of the four popular tragic romantic folklores of Punjab. The other three are Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal and Sassi Punnuh. This popular story of Mirza Sahiban was written by Pilu. Mirza and Sahiban loved each other and had eloped against Sahiban's parents' wishes. While they were on the run, Mirza stopped under a jand tree for some rest and fell asleep. Sahiban started thinking about her love for her brothers who were following them. She decided to break all the arrows of Mirza so that he could not kill her brothers. When Sahiban's brothers reached them, Mirza woke up but discovered his arrows were broken and then he was killed by Sahiban's brothers.
This Mirza and Heer folklores are generally sung in most musical gatherings. The concerts are considered incomplete until these folklores are performed. These folklores have their own style of singing, Heer is generally sung as a romantic saga in low tone using traditional melodic compositions, while Mirza is sung in warrior style. It's a romantic theme but the tune is more heroic or bravery style.
Narinder Biba used to sing Mirza with great energy. We present a performance during the Professor Mohan Singh Mela of 1992. Hope the viewers will like this segment.
