- Riddle me this: after Audemars Piguet’s landmark Royal Oak came out in 1972, which watchmaker was first to jump on the angular bandwagon and release a, hmm, homage? Patek Philippe, with the Nautilus? Nope, that was 1976. The IWC Ingenieur SL? Also 1976. 1977 was Vacheron Constantin’s 222. Well, how about this then, the Baume et Mercier Riviera. Never heard of it? Nope, me neither, but it first saw the light of day in 1973, just one year after the Royal Oak-and now it’s back.

This is the quality of watches and fair pricing you get when you don't go with the hype.
It’s nice to learn about mid price watches like BM and Seiko.
Good watches are good watches, regardless of prices.
Wrong channel then muchacho
@@BW-ih7pv This site has wandered into Longines, Oris, Nomos, Seiko…
Looks more like Bulgari than Royal Oak to me. “The great watch fair in the sky” LOL
Great subject choice. I always look forward to seeing your latest video
Finally a Baume & Mercier video! My first Swiss time piece was a Hampton City.
The presenter here has a style that is truly unmatched.
Best watch content channel on UA-cam community.
Would love to see more content of ahlange and sohne watches, am a big fan of those watches.
Never until this day have I lusted after a Baume & Mercier, but the "uprated" version is a beautiful piece, not an homage but certainly playing up on the modern-retro like many other brands. Looking at you Tissot with your PRX Powermatic (just ordered mine).
Honestly that sapphire dial blows my mind, and I'd love to see it on more watches. Skeletonized watches are very cool. but something about the semi-translucence of smoked sapphire makes me feel things.
Bell & Ross have used it too and if you want a cheaper option there is also Christopher Ward but the Baume et Mercier version is definitely my favourite of the lot.
@@mikeontherock who did it first?
@@stortjockisen I honestly don't know. It's not a concern for me who did it first. I have since seen it on other brands too such as Rado. If a design application looks good to me amd the watch itself is of good quality then they have my attention. I have no issue with one brand borrowing ideas from an other. I'm sure that to some extent they work together anyway, especially if they belong to the same conglomerate.
Do review like this brother this is helpful I was keen on AP now I fixed in this watch
Thanks for the video, I was waiting to see the Riviera. Really beautiful watch, honestly the Tissot Prx automatic, to me, does the same job for around 700 euro...
My first ever Swiss watch was a quarts B&M gifted to me by late father when I started college. My first ever mechanical watch was a B&M Capeland S chronograph. A couple of years and a couple of watches later (Omega SM300 & Breitling Avenger) and I find myself getting B&M Reviera that, now you’ve mentioned it, had the RO Offshore vibe. A 44mm steel-titanium case, 200m water resistant chronograph on a black rubber strap. This was all around 15 years ago. At the time I wasn’t really aware of RO’s or the Offshore’s significance simply because I wasn’t looking at watches in that price bracket. All in all I can just say that B&M are very well made and very underrated. It’s nice to seem them make a decent return.
What a beautiful watch ,I'll be looking for the high end model
Or if your budget is a bit smaller how about the Tissot PRX automatic? It’s a beautiful bargain 👌🏼
great looking watch
It has terrible movement (last version is on ETA c07.111 with plastic details)
@@chelvturke7588 they added an automatic version recently, idk I think for any automatic it’s a solid price and looks great
@@akallstar5 man, I exactly pointed which movement they added. It is powermatic 80 with plastic details, not powermatic with full metal movement.
@@chelvturke7588 take it easy my guy lol, I ready what you said, the point is that no matter what kind of automatic you’re talking, it’s a bottom of the barrel price for ANY automatic watch that’s also exactly in-line stylistically with today’s trends. That’s a lot to ask for in that price range. You may find SOME (not many) automatic watches a bit cheaper, but they’ll be out of style, or knock-off brand.
I just don’t really understand what you expect in that price range.
I like it. If I bought either of the 2 it’ll definitely be the more expensive one. Not because it’s 5 days, or in house movement. But it just looks cooler especially with the transparent dial.
Never heard of these Baume & Merciers before, amazing! Learn something new every day!
Great video mate.
Lovely looking watch
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻💪🏻
Not the run of the mill and will be more exclusive than a Rolex Tudor Omega Tag range.
I'm fuming with myself for not knowing about this watch! Absolute beauty!
Oh, a piece I can think of getting someday without winning a lottery...
How very nice in GTI trim .. Super vid
I own a Clifton. I really enjoy it wears great on the wrist.
thanks for the interesting review
Could you, please, make a video about the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metrograph? Thanks!
Captivating presentation
I love this watch I’m buying on cyber Monday in a silver dial so beautiful 🤩with the steel bracelet
I am a very big fan of this channel, your presentation skills are commendable.
I would like to request for more content on de bethune.
Can i send you one of my watches to take footage of it? 😅 you make everything look so amazing!
For a guy who never heard about the riviera, he sure does know a lot about it.
Can you please tell ne what kind of camera is in this video
It’s looks beautiful
Nice Vid 😎
Just picked mines up yesterday. Blue rubber band. Parking one of my rollies today. Loved it. $3300 CAD.
What's the lug-to-lug measurement on the 42mm? Would it wear well on a 7in wrist?
i have that original Riviera in 2tone (5131.038) given to me by my mom......it was hers back in the day...and being a 33mm, it fits me nicely...
Super classic watch, love those retro dimensions too. Been casually hunting for the right one for a few years now myself.
Nice.....love it... Now!! Should i sell my capeland fly back for this or just keep it 🤔🤔🤔
Seeing as we're talking about the Royal Oak like watches will
you be doing a review of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 that was just released?
The presentation skills are really unique.
I would love to watch you give a presentation of Jacob and co astronomia watches.
They've copied Bovet. Also,check out MBnF's work
Already got mine, it's very good!, looks awesome, not trying to be a RO
What an exceptional Genta style offering by Baume & Mercier! These watches are hot!
Been wanting to see a review on these. Beauties
If you have one, let me know!
My ig is the same as my yt name!
I'm not a fan of the blue strap on the 10619, but that dial is like waves meeting seagulls, very pretty.
Another forgotten 1970s integrated bracelet watch, the Tudor Prince Quartz Oysterdate. I have one on my wrist. Time for a reissue of this one as well.
This is actually a badass watch.
Yes, thank you. I asked for it, and you did it! Thank you again!
I asked for it too :) great minds think alike
If you have one, let me know!
@@mikeontherock If you have one, let me know!

Those bezel screws look rough as hell under macro looks like b.m. needs to tighten up their quality control if u ask me
That's a very beautiful watch!
Love B & M... so underrated.
Does anybody know what piece of music is used for these videos? thanks in advance
Has a better movement than a Omega Seamaster great video
Cant find the reference number of the vintage 73 riviera shown in the thumbnail, help?
I love the watch but, the roman numeral for the 6 o'clock being upside down annoys the hell out of me. look at Chopard's Alpine Eagle to see how it should look, when done properly. You wouldn't put a "6" upside down as it would read "9".
If you want a „Genta style“ watch with a manufacture caliber and can‘t get a Royal Oak, Nautilus or Overseas, the Riviera is the only option you have I think. And it’s a damn good option in my opinion. Maybe also a Bvlgari, but it’s a price level above and a bit more off from the Genta design
The octa was actually a Genta design-- Bvlgari acquired Genta's company
No, there is also the GP Laureato
Zenith defy as well!
Fun fact... Omega was the one starting the integrated bracelet sporty watches.
What year and what model of Omega?
I was struggling to find this. The Zenith Defy came out in 1969 which also beats the RO to the punch. I think it's a common misconception that AP are responsible for integrated sports watches but the truth is that they were just the first to charge more for one than a gold watch.
The original Tudor rangers beat the Omega dynamic to market. The integrated bracelet sporty watch goes even further back to Hamilton and Bulova.
@@user-wi9nn6dz8w look up 168.041 and 168.045
Same as Edox Delfin, a clear Royal Oak tribute done in 1973
A great substitute for the Chopard alpine eagle.
Excellent review. Regards, #WR4K
The Girard-Perregaux Laureato was the original; and I like it better than the Royal Oak.
Absolutely! 👏🏼🤩
Hate to say it (partly because I love the Laureato, too), but GP released that in 1975 - still behind Baume et Mercier.
Honestly, the ML Aikon is the place to go for an "affordable" alternative IMO.
Agreed.....but I must say that at certain times in the video I was lusting over the absolute beauty of this watch and didn't hear what he was talking about lol......
The Baume and Mercier Riviera is a stunning watch.
@@nathanwayne6673 Oh absolutely :) Me personally, I'll wait maybe another year or so to see if ML is going to bring an in-house calibre to the Aikon, now imagine THAT at around 3k...
Agree, but I think I like the BM better...it flows better imho.
The Aikon is a lovely watch, but it's like AP Royal Oak meets Omega Constellation. I think the Riviera has a more distinctive design.
I am interested in finding an Vintage one.
Do one about the Panda Daytona vs Black Bay Chrono with the same "fun" sarcasm as the Tudor Black Bay Blue
It's great that rather than just featuring watches you have for sale, you're doing real educational pieces.
Of a brand owned by Richemont, which also owns Watchfinder
Does anyone have the reference number of the vintage model in the video?
I have a Baume & Mercier Riviera 3131 - in steel with an automatic movement - it was my first good watch. Still wear it from time to time - quite small at 33.5mm but also thinner than my JLC Master Ultra thin small seconds. Excellent watch and keeps good time.
Why the watches aren't running?
CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON CERC ICON 8 PLEASSE
I can't believe how a text can be so pretty wrighted: fluid, funny and poetry! Congrats once more
I love your videos but i need to say that the videos are not loud enough, i did volume up but still like whispering, there must be a sound problem.
I thought the affordable Royal Oak was the Maurice Lacroix Aikon ?
I love how this watch is a nod to the AP and has it's own heritage at the same time, also has very much it's own character and wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg to buy.
I think affordable is something totally relative. Love my Seiko.
I guess the full stainless Riviera chronograph I got from Costco for less than $500 is a steal...
Isn’t it a ‘Dodecahedron’? Never heard of a ‘Dodechadon’. Anyway. Nice video. Pity about the Sellita movement (I’m not totally convinced yet) and the nasty date window. I’m still getting one.... with the in-house movement.
It is 'dodecagon'. That's a 12 sided shape. A dodecahedron has 12 flat faces.
Lost me at 42mm. 38-39mm and I'll buy it. Integrative bracelet pieces always wear bigger
보메 메르시에 마이크로 브랜드에요?
Isn’t this a far better design than the Royal Oak? I find the sapphire blue Riviera a cross between the Royal Oak and the Omega Seamaster with a good measure of that French watch. Lovely, without the Royal Oak pricing.
Love all the gorgeous LUME.
4 minutes 26 seconds in, look just above the hour hand... That hair is just in your face almost as much as it is in the watch
The dial in general is just dirty actually, Bergeon make some silicone tipped cleaning swabs, I recommend them, much better then rodico sometimes
Great watch but I don’t like the Roman numerals at 12 and 6.
Imo, there should be two principles. 1) buy what you “want” and 2) don’t buy alternative because you can’t buy what you want. It’s not a clear cut but the more desperate (or frustrated) you become, chances are higher that you start “convincing yourself” that alternatives are actually nice. It’s absolutely true that these alternative watches have high qualities. No doubt. But if you buy these because you can’t get what you want, that’s where tragedy begins. At some point, your alternative watch will start reminding you what you truly wanted but couldn’t get. You can’t just be “happy with it” and “forget about the grail” because these alternatives also costs thousands of dollars. If you put that much money into watches, you can never ignore RO’s presence. Otherwise, why did you buy such expensive watches when your cell phone can tell you time much better?
You should buy alternative only if you are 100% certain that you would buy them even if the original is available at the retail price at the same store. Get real. You don’t need a watch to tell the time in 2022. You need a watch for satisfaction. Are you satisfied with the alternatives?
What's up with the camera in all your videos?
Selitta seems to be the small block chevy of the watch world. Nothing wrong with it - a cheap, reliable workhorse, but immediately devalues any 60's Jag or 70's Merc whatever you put it in.
I say if it's a reliable workhorse, there should be no devaluation. Something's wrong if you reward reliability with devaluation. Then it seems like just plain snobbery.
the closer looking early Royal Oak homage would be the GP Laureato right?
What are those 2 strange circles on the dial?
Why aren't the watches running?!
Couple years ago, I noted that I needed to save up$17k for “my” AP. Now...several grand more.
Nice
CasiOak of course
The 10616’s dial is a bit well, Christopher Ward-ish isn’t it🤔!!!
Except Christopher Ward did it better. They fastened the dial with decorative screws so you don't see those unsightly and off-balance dial feet.
@@Richie_P 😄
@VoiDWalker I think ward was 2016-17, the other is hublot and?
@VoiDWalker thanks will look them up, it always been a little difficult for me to remember model years🙂
What's new is four bolts
The Chopard Alpine Eagle
B&M is so underrated!
I just don't get GG's 70s designs, seem like Emporor's new clothes to me. 🤷🏼♂️
Thank you for the video tho 👍🏻
Royal Oak bubble will burst.
First time I see a watch not running on your videos...
That blue sapphire dial looks just like the dial on the Christopher Ward C60 Sapphire. Who came first?
the egg
@@JLchevz Nah, nah man, the chicken.
@@covfefe8971 it's been proven the egg!! Lol
The Christopher ward came before as did Bell & Ross. I disagree that it "looks just like it" though. Yes it is a blue saphire dial but that is where the similarities stop. The shade, the transparency, the engraving, the markers, the hands, etc. All different. Having said that I like the Christopher Ward one although the trident on second hand does bug me a bit.
@@JLchevz LOL
Anyone else notice the corrosion at 08:57?
The dial looks like it came straight off a Christopher Ward…
the modern version does have similarity with Edox Delfin case design....
The original which is the inspiration for this was 1973 way before edox.
I own a BAUME antique watch that I do not know much about it
Not a bad looking watch.
too bad you couldn't get your hands on a Baumatic 5 days PR
