The more I get into watches, the more I discover that German watchmaking seems in many cases far more interesting than swiss watchmaking these days. There are many good stories and great smaller swiss brands, but they all seem to get drowned out by the mass popularity of Rolex, Patek, AP, etc. It's almost like German watchmaking is becoming what Swiss watchmaking once was.

Congrats Sherlock, finally you found the best German watch brand. I have been in Kalbe twice, its like timetravelling. The workshop looks like watchmaking on pictures from the early 20th century. They really do anything by hand or old machines. No CNC anywhere. Dirk Dornblüth is a craftsman, not a salesman. He has one machine wich is self made (like many others he uses) and is driven by the windshield wiper motor of an old Trabbi (the little car made in the GDR)! Dirk is allways open for visitors and for customizing the watch.

Great to see such a small German watch maker on YOUR channel! 😍 I also felt in love with the smaller workshops around the country. I just ordered a Hentschel watch from Hamburg in early summer. It's the same approach that D.Dornblüth & Sohn has. But I do prefer the even more classic yet modern looking watches from Hentschel for myself. For example the H1 I ordered. These people in the North of Germany are extremely friendly and the pre- and aftersales service is superb. At my stage of watch collecting I really do prefer smaller watch manufacturers with passion for watchmaking instead of the big companies that are mostly profit oriented. Best regards from Germany!

Absolutely stunning, didn't know making watches by hand still exists on earth. I love vintage craftsman work in watches and many other articles no longer exist today. Humanity lost a lot by the disappearing of craftsmen & women in the past few decades. Just love to see them at work one more time.

Oh, those hands !! The most beautifully proportioned I've ever seen. As a personal choice I would stick with the engraved face as shown, but replace all but 9,12 and 3 with a simple engraved bar.

Coning to this video a tad late, I was riveted by the imagery, description, and…just the thing itself. But I was bracing myself towards the end, where I anticipated a price tag that might make a Lange 1 seem almost reasonable, only to be shocked in the nicest way. Given that you're getting something just a hairs-breadth from bespoke, this is practically a bargain in relative terms.

Normally when I see these videos, in the close-ups I see the shear marks from where hands are stamped from sheet, or a burr raised where one machined surface meets the next. I often see a blob of paint on the dial where a spray gun spattered or inconsistant application of ink across a word stamped on the face. Chamfers are a major place for inconsistency even at the highest levels and occasionally glue can be seen oozing from a place you'd rather not see it. But this, this has no such niggles. It's as near to flawless as I think any watch I've ever seen has ever been, perhaps nearer.

Just a side note: Dornblueth really use hand techniques, their work shop barely has any mechanical equipment. It was his father's operation, restoring clocks and watches and then moved into his Son's Operation.
The son, Dirk Dornblueth fulfilled his dad's dream by helping them/the brand to build their very first wrist watch. The brand was born.

There's no doubt that for the price D. Dornblüth & Sohn provide a remarkable piece of horology, however my only complaint has been the lack of original case design. Whilst the inner workings are astounding, they rarely innovate on Case shape and sizes.
