Start the Morphy Saga here • The Pride and Sorrow o...
This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

"And it is in this position that Paul Morphy resigned the game" is almost as incredible to hear as "and it is in this position that Stockfish resigned the game". Kudos to Paulsen, didn't know what a hell of a player he was!

    • @steakanator7236

Paulsen was a top class player, although he wouldn't hit his prime until later into the 1870's. Worth noting that his road to the final match was much the same as Morphy's - round 1: 3-0, round 2: 2-0, round 3: 2.5-0.5(opponent resigned the match after 2 losses for whatever reason). He was by and large the 2nd best player in America, and given that #1 was Mr. Morphy, that's quite the accomplishment.

back in those days, many match conditions were written like "twenty one games, draws not counting." Sometimes players took this literally and kept their colours in the next game. If you go back to Morphy's match against Lichtenhein, he also has Black two games in a row, for the same reason.

He, Morphy, seemed more reckless than patient here. He was upset at himself, and I personally don't think Morphy respected Paulson after their blindfold match and then the last game where Paulson took long. Possibly a tactic on Paulson's part? Test the patience of Morphy while seeming to be confused/ unaware of Morphy's intentions?

That High Guy Yeah, they had plague, cholera, yellow fever, polio among other worse substitutes. Morphy died from infection caused by a scratch from the wide rim of another man’s hat. An impacted tooth could kill you. No vaccines other than for anthrax which was only given to livestock. Anesthesiologists had ether and morphine which were tricky and deadly. Wake up and thank the universe that you’re alive in 2020. This COVID will kill as many as a bad flu season. China and Italian cases are dropping and the vast majority of deaths occur in seniors with underlying conditions. A buddy of mine died at 29 from simple pneumonia that didn’t respond to antibiotics. Death will take all so you might as well live now.

You may learn much more from a game you lose than from a game you win. You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player. +-

He did what??? If the bar and library were open I would tell people that Morphy resigned and of course they would look at me like a weirdo and tell me to shut up. Ah good times.... In these difficult times I am very grateful to have my Croatian friend telling stories and enhancing knowledge. Cheers everyone.

It is a shame that because of our perspective we tend to evaluate more modern players as stronger. I believe that despite seemingly lower levels of competition, a dominant champion of any Era could be competitive in the modern Era if they were born in our time. You learn from the experience you have, and chess is about learning and adapting.

4:24 why not just knight capture bishop? its fall with check and after black recapture, white go bishop to d8 check and take the queen. white also have more pawn so should be winning endgame right?
