This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Great game. I really like lowenthal's queen and rook placement in this game.
You are absolutely correct. Lowenthal could see that both Black's first and second ranks could be pressurized.

Me: plays as white and still loses
Me: impossible
Lol
3:01 That was probably the quickest "Sorry about that" ever.
And he didn't even tie his shoelaces
I think Morphy was counting on Lowenthal eventually blundering (based on the previous games) and so he didn't take enough thought to defense. But Lowenthal played flawlessly -- nothing brilliant but always the move avoiding traps. Bravo, I didn't think Lowenthal had it in him (and obviously neither did Morphy).
And it was on this day that Lowenthal changed his name to Highenthal.
@@davidanderson_surrey_bc 😂
13:35 Agadmator out here drawing a Team Plasma battle logo
🤣
This easily makes the list of Morphy's worst games. Lowenthal's "see saw" pressure of the black king on the 7th and 8th ranks could have been continued a little longer before capturing the running pawn. Morphy's troubles begin with 18...Nxf6. This retreat capture is very un-Morphy where 18...Qxf6, looks obvious and natural. The only thing that makes sense for this choice is that Morphy wanted to keep that once removed attack on the pawn after white's king bishop was captured. All in all, opening theory of the day contributed to Morphy's defeat here. 8... Be6 is not followed up properly. Nb4 has to be played before castling or else white siezes strength along the a2-g8 diagonal. As we saw in the game.
Thanks for the additional analysis, was thinking about that!
Even the beginning was terrible he didnt develop many pieces right away but kept playing the same pawn again and again :)
Morphy seldom employed the Petroff. This shows why.

Great Saga - still so exciting today.
Lowenthal played that endgame quite well. So far, some of my favorite games in this series are when Morphy loses. I love Morphy, but he's always described as unstoppable. It's very interesting and instructive when he loses.
Wow absolutely superb video
Löwenthal really studied the endgame. So skillfully played!
Super game..and as always equally good analysis by our agadmator!

"this move is a bit more resilient" = "he was already losing, but now he is losing faster"
The candidate tournament was soooo good I can’t wait for conclusion
At 13:25 Lowenthal could have forced a queen trade with Qd3+, but it works out the same anyway. It isn't always a good idea to trade down when up material, but this is one of the usual cases when it is indeed advantageous to do so.
Ah, good to be back to the good stuff.

Who else was hoping Morphy would play the Stafford gambit...
I always want the Stafford after the Petrov. Apparently Howard Stanton was the first to play the Stafford, but Stafford owned it.
very instructional endgame!
That intro was a rude awakening as i was watching this in bed in the morning
Well, I'll bet Morphy didn't take this one lying down. :D

#HELP:
🛑Chess Puzzle🛑
You have to create a position where white has king and 3 pawns and black has only king. Following are the necessary conditions of this puzzle.
1️⃣Arranged position will be white to play.
2️⃣White will play for win but the final result will be a forced draw with accurate play from both sides.
3️⃣No double or triple pawns are allowed (for e.g. a2,a3 or b5,b6,b7).

I love that Morphy doesn't respect him enough to resign until he is literally about to get checkmated

Good stuff = best stuff
Notice that usually when morphy loses a game is in above 60 moves. Rarely in 20. He seldom blundered while the others made mistakes or impreciosions way more often, even when they emerged from the opening in better positions. His defense here although impossible was always persistent and very obstinate. Hence 70+ moves.
Wow!! And it was in this position that agadmator won the match😂😂
A point for Löwenthal!
Lowenthal probably went home celebrating after that game
Only Morphy can let his opponent up the pawn and the exchange by sacrificing rook for his Knight. Legend🙏

So the c7 pawn still hangs even if Rc8 right?
I think rook X knight is the best move after the pause
When you say this position has never been reached or we have a completely new game, do you consider the move order or just the position?
Move order. For example 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.O-O a6 is very rare with this order but it's actually Ruy Lopez main line after 5.Ba4, which is a mistake.
@@LeventK Ba4 is mistake? Isn't that what most GMs play?
@@leadnitrate2194 Check with stockfish.
@Levent K******** & @Lead Nitrate, I beg to differ. I think the answer to Chizzy Victor's question is the other alternative--it's the position, regardless of the move order because there are a LOT of openings that can transpose into one another and it would be silly to say, for example that the character or evaluation of a position reached by 2 different move orders was really any different.
