    I don't think I've ever heard a female athlete talk about their menstrual cycle. It is refreshing and informative. I think the world would stop doubting women's abilities just because they menstruate if more powerful and successful women normalized speaking about it. Believe it or not a lot of athletes perform well on their period. Runners included. The estrogen wave hits and you feel more energy and aggression. You don’t feel your best, but your body will respond well to the demands of competition.

    • @KCBisted
      @KCBisted 5 місяців тому +15

      @@Isariu11 I think when female athletes train very hard and have a stringent food regime , its fairly common to lose ones period. It usually is not a choice, but the fact that she hasn't shows that she has a healthy body composition and diet.

    • @EzraGrey-on8eo
      @EzraGrey-on8eo 5 місяців тому +13

      @@Isariu11many female athletes are encouraged to undereat to lose weight (coaches seem to think lighter = better). If underfuelled it disrupts their hormone cycle and their periods can stop. This is actually a sign their bodily functions cannot operate correctly and is not a good thing. But the impacts aren’t immediate, so it’s often not noticed until much later.

    • @Isariu11
      @Isariu11 5 місяців тому +4

      @@EzraGrey-on8eo okay thanks for the explanations, I never knew that hard dieting and exercise or undereating could do that to a girls cycle.
      Wow that makes Janja even more incredible, because not only is she remaining healthy weight for her hormones and her body, but considering the fact that she does train very hard, and probably eats clean to remain healthy (not under eating) and still never loses her period means that she is really built different, it’s as if she was born and built to be a high caliber climber and athlete.

    I've been waiting for this day to come, for a female athlete to talk about the impact of their menstrual cycle and how they deal with it. Not sure how it's taken this long for the topic to gain airtime. Good to hear her raise the issue of REDs and overtraining as it relates to low body weight -humbled when she said that ultimately she's proud to still have a cycle, despite the nuisance! Even more interesting to know she wins comps ON her period, and that you can be just as strong. Loved watching these eye-opening stripped back interviews with Janja, what an inspiring woman and role model. I hope the conversations around hormone health and cycles continue in elite sport.

    I am glad that this topic is being raised on a large scale.
    I was a professional chess player for 16 years. It may not be the same, but one chess game could last 3-4 hours at the most important tournaments. During one such game, when you wanted to go to the bathroom to change your pads, you were checked by the judges. They checked what you were taking to the bathroom and how long you were there to avoid cheating.
    It was humiliating, I always made sure to have a pad or a tampon somewhere in my pants pocket (handbags were not allowed) and it made me feel like I was hiding something.
    I know that times have changed and people are more aware now. Thank you Janja for being the voice of the young generation. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the finals at the Olympic Games!

      I'm sorry if this sounds a bit heartless, but I don't see the problem with that. I'm a guy, and last time I went to an exam there were guards outside the toilets too, making sure you didn't leave something in the bathroom, use a phone or whatever.
      It seems perfectly reasonable to me to have guards/judges at the bathrooms if you're concerned about cheating.

    I just learnt more about women's periods and sports than I've ever known. As a man, I've often wondered what it's like for a woman to compete and have their period, and Janja talks about this subject in such a mature and matter of fact way, like I've never heard any woman even remotely mentioning it. I was so interested to learn more. It's always baffled me how women swimmers in particular compete since the body is so exposed... If you never talk about these things, people will never know.
    I get the feeling women/girls are always taken to one side and talked to about it, and never involve boys/men.

    So glad she spoke about periods, because as we age we are more in sync with our bodies and its so important to know our bodies. For me its the worst in the lutheal phase (a week before period). Like Janja said you feel like a baloon, more tired, sleepy and like you hold a 1000 L of water in your body and it drains you out. But when the period comes it like you are being you again and I also feel so strong during it (cant speak for women who have painful periods) and same during ovulations (because testerones levels are the highest), you feel like you could lift the world with one hand. When I was younger I didnt like my period, but thats because I didnt know much about it, now I know that my body is sending me a message that it function properly.

    This is very inspirational and thought provoking. And a very good joke to show her humorous side. Never change, Janja.

    Janja, you're an open-minded woman; thanks for such a beautiful speech, like a girl of door next to mine!
    Such simplicity you bring also on climbing in a very unique way!

    This woman will be remembered for a very long time. Strong willed, strong bodied and competent in all styles of competition climbing. Hopefully a role model for a lot of young girls.

    Janja, and other female or male athletes like her, are the unsung heroes of sport. She, and they, help take us to the next level of personal performance development. I’m older. I latched on to isometric and other natural training, including road running, from the military. This was at a time some still didn’t understand flexible muscle is stronger than big muscle. It was believed the big muscle is more masculine. Tell that to Bruce Lee.
    By the way, the way Janja expresses herself “feels” very Slovenian and Slavic in the general sense. This thinking and expression in the modern era must feed into why we’re seeing so many elite athletes from former YU. That’s cool to see.
    I Feel S💚nia
