Love your videos Scotty. They are very informative and numerous at the same time
MASS is not weight, because the force of gravity needs to be a variable. work, of course is F=MA. May the force be with you. That was a rather large woman on that beach Scotty. MASSIVE.
Pins and chains worked great for decades.
I still miss my ol' '81 F-100 Stepside
Power tailgates, what a gimmick to sell a truck to someone who doesn't need one!
Trying to justify raising trunk prices another $2,000 over previous year's msrp
That why pickups are so expensive because of all the extras a work truck doesn't need. Fueled by people who buy them like a show vehicle instead of for work truck.
I've seen new trucks with steps on the rear bumper. Like can't you step on the rear bumper, which is just 2-3 inches higher???? 🤣😂
I see no reason to buy a GM vehicle 😂 They rust , fall apart, have multiple recalls, for ridiculous problems.
I have a 1978 Chevy stepside 1/2 ton and the tailgate has 2 chains and 2 hooks. Over the many years that I have driven it the tailgate never came down on it's own,,,,,,,,,,,
I have a square body 1990 R3500 Crew Cab Dually Longbed. Standard center pull tailgate latch mechanism on my slightly bent tailgate, and it has never popped open on it's own before either.
Between GM, Ford and Stellantis, the EV world has destroyed the American car makers. Whatever happened to the basic car that had stick shifts, roll up windows, manual seats……. Etc. People don’t realize that they are paying 10’s of thousands extra for s$&t that they don’t really need.
I agree. They complain when even a sedan doesn't have a power trunk. Like cmooooon those power trunks take FOREVER and same for power seats! Just extra cost and more to break down! And slow operation
People are lazy, soon people will need an compressor sew onto their body to breathe!
How about recalling every 3.6 because everyone will have timing chain problems. Junk yards are full of nice Traverses, Buicks, Gmc it's a shame the junk. Go back to the 350 for trucks and 3.8s for cars and we'd have something again.
They changed that engine about 8 years ago. The revised 3.6 is fine
I think that would be the LLT engine with timing chain stretch, after that there have been improvements.
Not all Traverses have timing chain problems. I have a 2011 Traverse with 3.6L. I have 260k miles now. The key is to make sure you check the oil level and keep it topped off. Lots of people don't do the normal checks of fluids and run into problems down the road. BTW, the new Traverses for 2024 are coming with a 2.5L Turbocharged 4 cylinder with the 3.6L as an upgrade.
Timing chains usually don't usually cause a safety issue at least. And to be fair, the 3.6 is largely gone now.
If people would change their oil every 5K or so the chains wouldn’t fail. I don’t care what the oil life says. I have a 2008 LY7 version of this engine and drive it every day.
And resurrecting the 3.8 would be a good idea, but modernizing it for current EPA regulations might be a problem
Just when you think GM can't get any worse, they find a new level😂
Exactly.
@ThomasKing19933, everything is just too gimmicky! Vehicle manufacturers need to get back to the basics of combustion engines, transmissions as well as the interiors where quality and safety is more important than "comforts." We don't need "27-way adjustable seats with heating, ventilation and massage." We also don't need "Facebook, YT etc." on the center console especially when you aren't supposed use any of it unless parked.... We used to have HVAC controls in our vehicles which used cables, then vacuum actuators, then they had to move to "electronically controlled" where a "scan tool is needed to adjust and reset the system." -_- We have engines and transmissions needing major overhaul/replacement below or just above ~100,000-150,000 miles in some vehicles. Then we have vehicles suddenly catching fire (more EV's than ICE), airbags launching shrapnel into people's skulls, vehicles accelerating out of control and on and on. Quality and safety are just terrible & the exorbitant costs for these things are off the charts!
The only thing I want with a touch screen is a smartphone.

Premature tailgating
If you can't open a tailgate you don't need a pickup
Are you saying that women "don't need a pickup"? . . hehehehe
@@RidgeKayserI believe he is saying that.
Don’t need? More like, “don’t deserve one.”
The women I know don’t have any issues operating the manual tailgate on my truck. They need to do that when they haul mulch and topsoil.
Yes, 0.1-0.5% can manually open tailgates, drive stick, reverse park ....so I never say 'all' 🤔
Can't anybody make a new car/truck without a recall?
Wait for Total Recall, it will be a blast
Nope.
Recalls are done to PREVENT problems. Before voluntary recalls, we just had to wait until things failed. Recalls are good things
@@robertmoffett3486 Sorry Robert, I don't agree. As much as new vehicles cost, there should never be a recall on them. It's an inconvenience to the owner and it instills less trust in the vehicle.
@@robertmoffett3486I'm sorry, but also no. They dont recall an item until there's a problem. The number of unhappy defect owners dictates that recall!
My 2500 work truck tailgate had a mind of its own immediately after getting it. Not surprised this was a recall
The reason they made the power tailgate is so there would be another item generate revenue by fixing them in the future..
When GM introduced this new tailgate I was wondering how long it would take for this recall to happen. Question answered
These new tailgates are a nightmare for body shops too.
I know someone with a 10k mile Pinto that never got the exploding fuel tank recall done. Added thousands to the value.
😅
Does he keep it in his garage next to his Tesla?
What’s it worth now, $5k?
😂😂😂😂😂
I had a 75 pinto station wagon. The said it wasn't a problem. By the time it was paid off, in 1978 it was total junk.
They didnt listen to the market that was asking for simple affordable work truck to match an underpaid working class
Now the working class is driving around in used Corollas and Hyundais because all the yuppies drove pickup prices so high.
Can we just go back to cheap and reliable, one-piece manual tailgates that work? Thank you.
Mary Barra thinks this comment is sexist.
Most people aren’t tall enough to manually open the tailgate on a modern pickup … You need a stepladder to climb up into the things …
GM used an electric motor because manual latch mechanisms were failing 😳😳😳😳
And what is the solution to the rest of the vehicle’s problems? I doubt building a cheaper vehicle will cure the inherent design and durability problems
@@Clyde-2055 Really? That many people? Not everybody is 4'9" like Jennifer Alvarado. I can't imagine that many people needing a stepladder for the bed of a pickup.
The Limited Chevy/GMC Super-Special ProMax ProPlus Up-and-Down Broken Tailgate Edition.
Got a letter in the mail for my truck. At the bottom they said no parts are available yet for this recall. Idiots
Send a letter back to them saying 'idiots'
You've been watching Scotty too long, he's a great mechanic but he doesn't know much about the manufacturing process! Do you really think they designed that tailgate to fail, do you realize the part that is failing is outsourced which is the main cause of recalls! GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, BMW EVERY auto manufacturer faces the same problems with outsourcing this time it just happened to be GM! Scotty also has a bad habit of speaking before he thinks, that tailgate is to assist people that can't or don't want to climb in the bed of their truck like a 2 year old trying to get in bed, the average truck bed is waist high so for short, elderly or handicapped people that need a truck need that assistance so it's not a "stupid idea"!
@@living-wellon-less5669 if they're having this problem, then it's obvious that GM hasn't done the quality control checks, it doesn't matter if the part is outsourced, it doesn't work correctly. You're paying 60K plus on these vehicles, it's GM's responsibility to make sure that these items work.
@@bravobravoh1344 It's the same problem every car company has, don't you remember the Toyota lawsuit over runaway acceleration? They can't inspect every part, that is supposed to be done by the supplier, if it is a supplier problem they will end up paying for it, if it's a design problem GM will pay for it! EVERY company that switched to outsourcing their parts has had this problem! I retired from GM in 2006 and I have first hand experience with it, the stamping plant I was working at lost a contract with Toyota because of quality control issues with the control arms we were sending them but there's still a lot of Toyota's still on the road with our GM made control arms!
@@living-wellon-less5669 The question I'd ask is this a standard option or part of a package/trim level? Because I assume most people who buy trucks are able bodied tradesman who would have the common sense to buy the truck with the mechanical latch. It just seems manufacturers arn't giving people the option these days all in the name of technology/progress.
So then you have to ask yourself if it's technology progress or corruption/greed and planned failure. And it just failed earlier than expected. I'm just saying that it would be nice for those of us that don't want all of this crap to have the option, assuming it's there.
I work at a hardware store and I see customers that own new trucks with that electric tailgate and sometimes they don’t work what happen with mechanical handles😂
GM has never been able to make a normal tailgate work, something they should have worked on 1st before this complex mess.
I bought a new 2021 tacoma in 2021. 0 problems so far. The truck still rides like new.
Had a 2004 VW Passat, it was in Minnesota and Massachusetts for 8 year where they salt the heck out of the roads in the winter then Colorado until now - ZERO rust...just sayin'...
Buying a new vehicle is like buying a new house the price is ridiculous
Yeah 74k for a truck is crazy. How about jeep wranglers. I have a fully loaded jeep wrangler x games edition with the steel vented hood. 42k brand new. That was 2015. Same jeep now costs 60k plus. A 10k increase is responsible but a 20k increase?
The entire auto industry shocked twice in the same week! Good Lord.
Always a great commentary!
High temperature paint for exhaust. Paint the metal around the Catalytic converter also. Headers. People used to paint headers all the time. Paint the frame and body panels near the exhaust manifold.
Maybe they can build the mass transit pods at the old Packard plant? Look at how much money would be saved............

Gm are good cars they got stuck all the time in ukraine... my work ford transit with 260 000km used to move machinery around leaks some oil like 3 drops in half and hour... but it comes with secondary gallon oil yo keep adding it... it's like a pickup truck merged with european truck and a big rear bed with clutch covers... 👌 weird cars but does a good job for now... also needs some new fuel filter... it's not being taken care of but it runs for now... 😅

Melbourne Fl is literally right next to the ocean.
Yes went to a college in 1970 in Melbourne and it's just a hop skip and a jump to Indialantic and Melbourne Beach on the ocean.
Scotty , you made me to wait too much for the latest shock. It is a real shock. That happen because they have overengineered the gates of the trucks. All of them added so much complexity to a truck gate that they became too heavy, and the best they found was to motorized them. Now the gate has software electronics, and a manual switch. The more parts, the more it can fail.
The real pods remind me of an old proposal here in Minnesota, called Taxi 2000. Everyone ignored it.
Every year vehicles are costing a bigger piece of people's yearly salaries yet the quality is getting worse
Forget the power lock, make the tailgates sturdier!!!
That hot/cold water power plant is old tech. And useless. The temperature difference is so small it doesn’t and can’t even pay the interest on the borrowed money to build the thing.
Old GM’s I can work on myself only. A 94 that still works great, simple OBD1 reader for a few basic things to check. And you can ground the two pins to get blinking check engine light codes for answers.
Just bought a 2019 F150 2.7 eco 10speed trans (bought used from ford dealer) truck had 77k miles
Thankfully bought ford extended powertrain warranty
Trans went out at 80k 5weeks of driving.. ford is covering trans and labor costs $100 deductible
Tailgates should have a hook and a chain. Also, I should be able to hop into the bed from the side. Damn.
I have a 22 sierra, the dealership did a disconnect of the power tailgate as part of the recall but they don’t have a fix for it yet!
I can only open the tailgate using my fabb or interior button 🤨
Took my 2023 Sierra today and I had asked before I made the appointment the day before if they had a fix for the tailgate recall and they said they did. They did the disconnect on my rear switch as well and I was pissed when I found out what they did!Tried to get the switch reconnected and they wouldn’t do it.Hoping the software updates they did for the other two recalls didn’t screw something else up.
Good info 😊
I had a 2022 2500 Denali Duramax. My tailgate did this all the time until they replaced the electronic switch.
Like the Honda Ridgeline tailgate that has the option to open down like traditional tailgates or sideways like you would a conventional door.
The more I watch your videos, the happier I am that I traded in my 2022 Silverado for my 18 Sierra.
No, this truck also doesn’t have a great reputation for the engine DOD, but so much better without the auto start/stop, remote control tailgate, and the DOD that dropped the engine to 2 cylinders!!
At least with my current unit, I’m prepared for engine issues!!!
SOILENT GREEN !!!!
The reduction in carbon,

Hey scotty i have Hyundai accent 2022 my car coolant decrease little should i put water or should i went to dealership and buy original coolant. Or may be buy online aftermarket
As a third party contract employee for GM, this isn't surprising. We have LITERALLY thousands of incomplete LYRIQS on and off property (they have a enormous field full of incomplete vehicles about 10-15 mins from the factory) . They ran these cars through the assembly process without the rear spoilers and the side panels of the rear hatch. Now those are the ones we didnt have parts for. You should see the hundreds that rolled off the line that were assembled improperly or had some other problems. Lol.
6:52 I've heard about this "temperature differential" energy before, but always wondered how much of the power generated will be used to push the light vapor down to the cold zone and to push the heavy liquid up to the hot zone. After all, most of that energy is normally used up by convection currents in the water.
Shocking ... as always Scotty !
I love how all these computer chips screw up.
Yep. I had work done to my car and the mechanic forgot to reprogram the electric parking brake. Button parking brakes and IPad in your face dash screens REALLY annoy me.
I'm not necessarily agreeing with the Cicero but, the autonomous public transport in Alula Saudi Arabia developed in 2022 is because, unlike NYC, that has a population of over 8 million, Alula's population is just over 40K. So that's probably why they thought pod vehicles, with a capacity of between 14-22 people to transport 1k-16k people per day, would suffice. As with most "bright ideas," only time will tell. 😂
The only news I watch is Scotty
Power gate. Love it.
Power Tailgate reminds me of the Side Saddle has tanks. Everyone loves to talk about and make fun of the Ford Pinto for exploding from the rear gas tank, but get ever bring up the GM side saddles that blow up when you close the door.
Also, the train pods aren't quite as dumb as one might think when you consider how they will be used and in what way. The whole system doesn't work like a traditional train system, each pod has a set destination set by the passenger and the main rail system just acts like a highway. When they reach their destination the pod pulls off and stops then either waits at the station for the next person that needs it or gets pulled to go to another one that needs it in a high traffic area. It may cost more up front but you save a TON of money in maintenance, wear and tear, energy, etc because instead of having a large heavy multi car train you need to start up and run and bring to a stop you instead have just a little car that isn't always running. You also eliminate the need for a train schedule and different lines as your car is in theory already there just waiting there for you to put in a destination and go to whichever station you need/want to go to. Just detach the idea from traditional trains and think more like a self driving car on a Rollercoaster and track. But don't try to install these in the typical big blue metros because the cars will be destroyed super fast and the cost will sky rocket, but in places like Asia and parts of Europe, or even some US cities these would not only be perfect but highly profitable.
I love the style of a Packard...
they were very stylish cars
they need the tail-gate powered, because the customer base for this big trucks are no longer focus on working men, but on the commuting city folk, meaning that the heavy tail-gate need to be effortless to open and close. the Ford f-150 lightening store page, does not show it towing, it show a shopper getting items out of the front of the truck.
FYI Detroit Airport is not even in Detroit, or anywhere close to any automotive plants. It's in Romulus mi...

My Pod has Toyota across the rear end....works great.
Great stuff
I know you like the Toyota crape but i have worked on every make in the last forty plus years and I haven’t found one that doesn’t have problems and I have found that ford and Nissan has the most the thing with ford is they simply don’t recall them even though they should. Ford has a problem with their interment cluster weren’t will lose power without warning but it’s never been fixed and it’s very expensive to fix on your own.
That's bad. I've got a 2001 Nissan Navara long bed. Latches are manual easily fixed.
A friend of mine was towing a trailer and the tailgate opened up and slammed the jack on the tongue of the trailer, more than a couple times as he drove down the road.
Great video and presentation.
Quick question for you Mr Kimber im thinking about purchasing a 2007-2012 Doodge Niro but before i do i would just like to know the pros & cons of the medium size Suv?
RUN AWAY
Junk
Yes they do unlatch while my horse trailer was hooked up. Broke my new electric jack on the trailer and the only thing GM would do is replace the damage on the truck told us to replace the jack at either our expense or go through the insurance. So anyway, fast forward and the new motor or whatever they did to replace the unlatching tailgate does the same thing and now it’s dropping all the time! Tied up with twine! The dealership won’t stand behind a thing either! Absolute JUNK! Does anyone know if there is an avenue to get GM to pay for my jack now with a recall?
I have a $30 dampener when I open my tailgate and it slowly opens itself with gravity no slamming and I can also buy a tailgate closing helper for very low money and it’s a 04 Silverado and anybody I see around me with brand new pick ups they don’t have this feature, which is ironic since it only cost 30 bucks
00-06 GMT800s are regarded as the best and most reliable trucks still on the road today.
"They always have electronic problems". Thank you, and have had electronic problems for 30 years, or so. For me, their instrument clusters are a prime example of that. Very aggravating, and the replacement parts are no better. No more for me, if newer than 1990.
Just happened to a coworkers z71. Drained his battery because of a bad switch kept clicking.
I've been around sooooo many 73 to 98 Chevy and GMC trucks. That's back when they actually knew how to make a tailgate.
Looks good on Paper, but paper doesn’t Rust
A big powerful engine will need to be paired with a manual transmission, to be a real fun. And low cost as well.
interesting about the pods. Almost as if they are planning on there being a lot less people in the near ish future....
And 15 minute cities.
I have an older 911 and no rust. Porsches actually last a long time. But ok, no reason to argue.
I purchased a new vehicle in 1979. Never again. The last car I purchased was in 2023 and it was a 1969 Mark-3. It needed a paint job, a new vynal top, and some R12 for the AC. Now its like new again and no payments and easy to find in a parking lot!!
Shocked to be Shocked yet again.😂😂😂
As long as Scotty doesn't burst into flames we should be ok🤣🤣🤣
tailgates. the most simplest part of any truck... and they f--k it up making it so fancy. All I need is a handle on it... lol
FIRST there was Watergate.
THEN there was Russiagate.
🎈Now.... there's Tailgate!
My simple 2013 Fiat 500s still running down the road . I do have to replace a ambient temperature sensor and exterior door handle but $45 for both is not killing me. There's roadkill for Scottys dinner up ahead.
I am leery about the quality of any vehicle made since the Pandemic
I'm leery about any vehicle made with OBD 3, which means nothing after 2006.
I'll hang onto my 2002 2500HD
Morgantown WV has a system called the PRT. They are personal rapid transport pods that has been running since the 70's. WVU still uses them to transport students from one campus to another. They are great and efficient. Scotty, you need to do some homework and check them out before you make fun of them!
I have a 2017 Porsche Macan and I live on an island on the west coast of Canada and live by the beach AND park outside and not even a spot of surface rust. Neither on any of my previous cars either. Porsches are pretty well built and the dealers here are amazing so I think that guy is the exception not the rule. Sucks that his dealership is such crap...I'd escalate to Porsche headquarters
I got an 04 that does that.
I want my 1965 Chrysler Newport and 68' IH Scout back. Lots of power and emp proof lol
9:02 Cheaper? I go right to the 7-11 parking lot.
I want the basic standard way. It used to be no electronic bull crap except for maybe fuel injected. Everything else you can keep it. I hate the electronic stuff. It always breaks. It always costs 100 thousands of dollars to fix it. Okay $900,000 but thousands of dollars to fix it cuz a lot of times you can't do it yourself. You have to send it to a dealer. You have to send it to a mechanic back in the day. Man, you can fix your own stuff now if you don't have tech savvy and everything else
i do believe scotty said the gm trucks were getting recalled earlier in the month or last month.
Power tailgate...electric door knob....
Lots of flames recently Scotty!!!
Makes me miss my old F100 EVEN MORE!
I haven’t purchased a General Motors product in almost 20 years
Ram had the same issue just recently
Because people want privacy Scotty. All trains should have private compartments. People would use them more.
It's actually an old idea that works very well.
On top of the tailgate latch opening on its own GM should also put all the most sensitive electronic parts like the computer inside the tailgate to make sure that in a collision everything will need to be replaced at a higher cost. GM= Give Money
If the pods can join together to form a train that can go for longer distances maybe, but not short distance that would be too expensive
I have a 2007 !
Remember when the gates were chained shut. Use it or lose it.haha
